I am happy that Bangkok won the "World's Best City Award" again for the Fourth time in a row . I am not ashamed to say so. I personally, get this certain kind of energy in me from Bangkok which is hard to explain to anyone. I've had to move from Bangkok last year to the North West for business reasons, so I am not there at the present time. I do visit there occasionally to recharge my "batteries". However, I intend to move back to Bangkok within the next 18 Months as I personally choose to live there and once again enjoy all Bangkok has to offer. IMHO.

Wrong! There are many safety standards that come into play here. Was the truck overloaded? The news article says "cement truck" but we have no indication what that means. Was it an overloaded pickup? What about safety inspections for large trucks? What about driver training and qualification and standards such as keeping log books and restricting the number of hours one can drive? Those are safety standards in force in many countries. They are the law because of incidents such as this in those countries, including my own. Of course, we hear enforcement mentioned repeatedly, so I won't dwell on that. You are correct, however about the barrier, but that calls into question traffic engineering in this country. Traffic engineers here should be held accountable. They're criminally negligent."The truck crossed from the opposite lane of traffic and hit the bus," said local police officer Lieutenant Colonel Assavathep Janthanari, adding that a pickup truck behind the bus had also been involved in the crash."
Read again:
This has nothing to do with the safety standards of the bus or the pick-up truck,
If a cement truck is crossing the lane from the opposite direction, no safety standards can help you anymore.
The only safety that could have avoided this tragic accident would have been safety barriers in the middle of the road.
But that would have only shift the accident to the other side of the lane.
How can you overload a cement truck, when it' full you can't fit any more in.
Let's first look at the term "cement truck". It is a pneumatic tanker on a trailer or truck chassis containing cement powder. Cement powder is dry, dense and very heavy. Did you ever pick up a bag of cement powder? The bags generally weigh in at 50 Kg. Cement powder tankers are loaded by weight and not volume. There has to be room in the tank for air to blow the powder out into a holding bin at a plant. So, you never want a truck to be "full". Plus, it would be too heavy at the highway weigh scales. People also confuse "cement truck" with a highway transit truck containing ready mixed concrete. They contain a volume of concrete that was ordered for a specific jobsite. Different sizes of drums for different sizes of truck chassis. Again, there are weight limitations also for these trucks. 1 cu./mt. of concrete weighs 2.4 tns. Plus, because it is considered a "live" load when the drum is turning, you also don't want the drum full because of spillage out of the back. These vehicles are never "full". Concrete is expensive so that would be money flowing out the back. Also, just in case any one ever wondered, concrete has a life span of 90 minutes. Yep, 90 minutes from the time it was batched. Then it starts the setting process. If anyone buys a load check the batch time on the delivery ticket. We'll just have to wait to see what type of vehicle was actually involved. I am retired from the industry, so that is my 10 Baht worth of info.

As an alternative I went to the Thai Consulate in Kotha Baru, Malaysia and received my 60 day Tourist VISA a couple of years ago. The Consulate is closed on Friday and Saturday due to respect of the Muslim Religion in Malaysia. I took the train from BKK to Songi Kalok and and then a Motorbike Taxi to the Malaysia Border. I walked across the Border into Malaysia and got my VISA stamp for Malaysia then took a nearby taxi to Kotha Baru. I stayed at a hotel nearby the Thai Consulate. I dropped my Passport and paperwork off the next morning and picked it up the following afternoon with a 60 day 2- entry Tourist VISA. Did the same thing again 2 Months later and received a 60 day single entry Tourist VISA. Both times were problem and hassle free.

War? What War? It is labeled as an issue in Thailand's Southern Provinces . It is always reported in the Thai Media as problems with separatists or insurgents in the deep south. One word to describe the groups involved, however that is NEVER used is "Terrorists". Imagine that! The rest of the World labels the bombings, murders, be headings and assassinations carried out by groups such as those located in Thailand Southern provinces as "Terrorists". Nooooooo Not Thailand! CANNOT use the "T" word as it will scare away the Tourists and their Money. Cannot do that! Lets just sugar coat it. If the "T" word is not used, perhaps the Tourists will not be able to connect the dots and come to a conclusion that Terrorists activities can happen anywhere and Thailand is not immune. After all, Thailand is still the Land of Smiles.

I gave my Passport and a 500 Baht Bill to the Myanmar Immigration Officials at the Myawaddy side of the Friendship Bridge in the Mae Sot area. I left my Passport with them, and went to have Lunch for about an hour with a friend at a restaurant along side the Moei River. Went back and picked up my Passport with the Myawaddy Stamp in it and crossed back over the bridge into Thailand. Hassle Free on the Myanmar side. Went to the Thailand office and the Official asked me all kinds of questions as he checked my Passport. He stamped it and I walked forward to get a tuk-tuk. I just sat down when 2 Officials from the Immigration Office ran out and stopped my tuk-tuk. They demanded my Passport and began scrutinizing every page in it. They asked my friend in Thai if I was US Military or Police? They asked me why I went into Myanmar. What did I do? They finally found the page with my Retirement VISA with Multiple Entry Permit in my Passport. Then it was "Thank You, Sir for you cooperation!" Enjoy your stay in Thailand! I have no idea what that was all about, but I told them no problem because they were just doing their job and left on the tuk-tuk.

Good idea with giving that 500 Baht tip. He helped you with an unfortunate situation and that's all that matters. That "token of appreciation" just might have made his day. Anyway 500 Baht is peanuts compared to a 2000 Baht fine and VISA problems. Who cares whether he might or might not expect from the next person.

Yep, contact the Arisa Hotel In Mae Sot. It's about 1 Km from the Airport and Main Bus Terminal. 1 year old, so it is in tip-top condition. Plus, everyone that spends the night gets a voucher for the breakfast buffet. Call before you go, as it is usually booked up. And yes, I have spent several trips there myself.

I did that once leaving On Nut and going to Silom station to the BTS Customer Service Center and returned to On Nut with out exiting thru the gate. I do believe I was charged a total of 15 Baht.
-
Totally disagree with On Nut being a shit hole. I have lived here for 1 year and enjoy the location. I have a Tesco-Lotus connected to the On Nut BTS station and a Big C only a 15 minute walk away. Also, about 8 new condos are being built in the area. There is also the On Nut beer garden on Sukhumvit which I went to once and decided it was not for me. However, I am quite pleased with the amenities available in the area.

I flew Korean Air for the first time and had a great flight. Prior to Korean Air, I flew Japan Air Lines, THAI, China Airlines and Delta Airlines. Korean Air service was great and the flight was smooth. I shopped on the net to compare prices and flight info and settled on buying my ticket on Korean Air's website because that had the best deal. Korean Air will be my first choice Airline for my future flights.

Its good to read your BIG head was doing ALL the thinking! Life is a chance, crossing the street is a chance. So give it a GO! Best of luck!

I did and it is the BEST way to get to BKK from LAX. As someone mentioned in their answer it is a $200 or so USD upgrade each way. I'm a big guy (6-2 & 270 lbs) and I was comfortable the entire flight. The most amazing part of the trip is the ability the A340-500 to fly nonstop for such a great distance. Get on in Los Angeles and step off in Bangkok. Awesome! Around 17 hours in the air. Act fast as there are only 42 Premium Economy seats per flight. You won't regret it.

I have been to Yok Yor Marina & Restaurant, Soi Somdej Chaowpraya 17. I did the Dinner cruise several times and it never failed to impress. I will definitely take the cruise again. The restaurant is pretty cool too right on the river. Food and service was great. Check it out yourself.

It would be disastrous for Thailand. Forget about the short term gains like employment, creation of secondary jobs and the like. Gaming will take from the poor and give to the rich. Nevada has not have an increase of the Gaming Tax in close to 50 years. Why you might ask? Because the politicians are scared of ruffling the feathers of the Gaming Corporations. Also, most Politicians after their political lives are over, are eagerly empolyed by the Casinos in one elevated position or another. Providing they had been kind to the Casino during their term. Nevada ranks in the 51st position for education in the USA, when D.C. is included. And the States Education Budget will be cut by 4% in 2008 because of a lower tax revenues. There is NO need for a quality education when the local economy employs Dealers, Bartenders, Cocktail Waitresses and Strippers. Only the Multi-National Corporations will be the BIG winners with their insateable appetites for money. All the rest involved will be the losers. You don't think those BIG Casinos were built by people winning money, do you? The HOUSE always WINS! And Yeah, I'm from Vegas.

I flew LAX-BKK-LAX in June of 2007 in Premium Economy. I am 6-3, 300 lbs. It was worth every penny! And then some. Took off from LAX and 17H-10M later, I was in BKK. That Airbus 350-500 is quite the comfortable flying machine. Service was great and the food was good. NO complaints from this Traveler. That extra room in the seat and for the legs made it worth it! Book it!

I totally agree with buying a TracFone from WalMart for $10 USD and then buy minutes as necessary. That is exactly what I use when I visit the USA. I also bought the double time card. You get double the minutes with every purchase.
