  1. Yes because those 10k sandbags were stacked one on top of the other........

Don Muang Airport to close operation by 5PM today, floodwater submerged runway electricity.

Meanwhile, ACM Sumet Photimanee, chairman of Airports of Thailand (AoT), on Thursday expressed confidence that Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports were well-prepared to prevent floodwater from intruding into their respective compounds.

To brace for the possibility of full-scale flooding, Don Mueang Airport authorities built an additional temporary embankment with some 10,000 sandbags.

( parts of article not concerning Don Muang Airport removed )

So the 10.000 sandbags didn't provide enough resistance to the millions of cubic meters of water.

I must say I am very surprised.

You should think that someone would have thought long and hard about this, before settling on 10.000 sandbags.

    Post may contain irony.

  2. If it's like a First World country, you need a separate policy to cover flood damage-flood insurance.

I am not being flippant about this but it will be interesting to see how the insurance companies work this one out

as its a natural rain water flood held back by levies and protection then levies opened which makes it a man made flood and not an act of nature

Most insurance policies omit everything that any one can make a claim on and so this is an interesting situation

BTW I am housing and feeding a few Thais that have lost all

  3. Someone has to tell them to move to hjgher ground?

Singapore Foreign Minister Orders Singaporeans in Bangkok To Evacuate

All Singaporeans in Bangkok were ordered to evacuate to higher ground or areas that will be safe from the ravaging floods, as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra declared to open floodgates in Bangkok to drain water out to sea.

The Singaporean foreign minister reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or MFA has ordered all Singaporeans in Bangkok to evacuate to areas that will not be affected by the inundation after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra declared that floodgates in Bangkok will be opened in order to drain the water into the sea, which will cause flooding in eastern Bangkok.

The Singaporean foreign minister has also advised Singaporeans to avoid traveling to Thailand until the situation returns to normal.

You plan to stay almost 12 hours at the airport? Wow! That is keen. Why not book a hotel at the airport or a cheaper option is one of the few airports located between 5 - 10 minutes away.

Actually, I didn't realise there were hotels so near, I had figured BKK was my only option.

I should do a search, but do you have any hotel names, or an area name that I can google?

  5. LOL-comparing a slow moving flood to a major hurrican-surely you should have began you post with,"I'm clueless".

I believe people who write a post like this should be required to begin with, I am from *name of country* Clearly, you can not be an American and hold this view. In Hurricane Katrina 1,836 people died, and property losses exceeded $81 billion. Lets not even talk about the oil disaster in the Gulf. Perhaps the UK? OMG...where to begin?

The question is, "Who are you to judge?" By the way, Thailand began planning for this in the 1990's, developed some clever plans, implemented them...and frankly...they are working! Really, you have no idea what you are talking about. Instead of pointing the finger, why not instead "lift it" to help someone today?

The way Thailand has dealt with and dealing with this is a joke, No preparation, Politicians and beauarcrats who are not up to the their jobs, a country where image is everything, substance non exsistent

  6. From any BMW motorCYCLE,you sit very high in the saddle and it's easy to see ahead and also over many cars.

driving on any road you cannot see is a disaster waiting to happen for a motorbike ..........saying that though i still do it when i have to

follow the motorbike taxis if you can ,they usually know their local route so well they know where every pothole is hidden and they can avoid every speedbump blindfolded :)

when it gets very deep ,cut down to walking speeds because if it tips over it might not start again for a few days

  7. Apparently you missed this important sentence:

Kittisakdi said the ministry would start providing additional trains on November 1 to increase its frequency as planned in the first stage.

    This is a disgrace.....

Five years for more trains??? Who are they trying to kidd? That isn't a plan, that is a mean joke, on the riders.

Who cares about more commercial space? Is there a problem with people not being able to find a place to shop in Bangkok? No, I didn't think so.

The problem is the service on the Airport Link and people need a solution NOW, not in five, or more, years.

Since when is development of the surrounding area at Makkasan station a Transportation Ministry subject matter? Why is the transportation Ministry involved in development issues at a particular station? Moreover, if development occurs at Makkasan, it will make the poor service even worse because of the increase in ridership.

It seems to me that the Transportation Ministry still does not understand that the Airport Link line is a commuter line for local workers and residents. The huge majority of riders are local residents going to work, shop, or leisure who need a convenient, predictable, and timely train. Tourist make up less than 10% of the ridership.

If the line becomes more rider-friendly for locals, it will automatically become better for tourists.

Thais: you deserve much, much better than this.
