Where is the corruption ? Nobody is being asked to pay a bribe, people are being given extensions on their Thai ability, (all be it at the discretion of the IO, but then extensions have always been at the discretion of the IO).

    Here it is:

If you pay 5000 baht (this includes 1900 for the extension and 3100 for the VIP service) every ninety days, the school will take all of your paperwork to immigration and get everything done for you. You just show up the next morning, get your picture taken and pick up your passport. 90 day extension is automatic in this case. No language testing by immigration. No change in the amount of hours you spend in class each week.

But that is not mentioned on THIS thread ?

  2. Am surprised that not any newspaper picked up this corruption?! How about you guys that been affected to this tip of your local newspaper Bangkok News, Phuketwan etc etc..?

  3. The Police don't care about foreigners working here or whether or not we are contributing financially to the Thai government they were arrested because the police never got a kick back from their illegal work. As long as you pay, mai bpen rai.

I would love to see the BIB raid a few schools in Thailand and arrest the teachers working illegally in them . . . . .but that will never happen because it would mean all schools had to be legit and possibly pay the 'legal' farangs more.

    Hypocrisy of the highest order.

You know the part in green because ? Or are you just making wild assumptions based on nothing but bar talk hearsay.

Why would they have to pay them more ? Teaching is exempt the minimum salary requirements for an extension of stay.

  4. Don't know what will happen as I've never heard about anyone doing such a thing lol. Maybe best to leave Thailand & return to your home country before you will need to go to court & get in more trouble.

Why would you show your gf your passport in the 1st place?

Just how would he leave Thailand before his court date? The police have his passport. Did you read the post ?

  5. Can I apply for the ED visa now, so that I have it by the time I resign, or is that likely to cause problems?

I don't think you can apply for a visa whilst you have a valid visa, however I'm not sure of this, better wait for someone else to answer.

As long as you have an "O" visa or a "B" visa you can apply .. just check your visa to see if it is a 90 day or a 60 day...

    No Prob there...

60 day Non O or B !! What are you on about ?

Read the post, the OP is on an extension of stay, NOT a visa !

  6. Doing the conversions to a non immigrant visa was not that big a workload for CM immigration alone. I think the problem was that division 5 headquarters having to do the approvals was the problem. They did not want the additional workload after Bangkok headquarters changed the requirements to where they had to do the approval.

I applied for my first non Immigrant O visa extension based on married to a Thai in Chiang Mai 30 odd years ago. If I can remember rightly I think the amount required in a Thai bank was 80000 baht at the time, still considered a lot of money back then.

The visa application or extension fee was 500 baht. I submitted my visa extension application that had to be sent to Bangkok for approval, which was the procedure and was told to report to Immigration once a month until my application was either accepted or refused. Each month I reported to Immigration they stamped the pages in my passport and in no time my passport pages were soon filled.

Then once the 12 months prior to my application had run it`s course, I had to visit Immigration again to apply for my next visa extension but during that time I had not received a yaa or a naa regarding my first application from Bangkok yet. It took 20 months before Chiang Mai Immigration finally heard from Bangkok and I was able to receive my up to date stamp passport visa stamps. The situation did not improve until the mid 1990s when Chiang Mai were given more independence from Bangkok.

I think Bangkok has always been a thorn in the side for Chiang Mai Immigration and believe that the present situation is due to that Bangkok still insist on maintaining the final word and holding the overall authority over all the country`s Immigration departments.

As there is no current substance in your post, one can only assume that you used it to tell us mere mortals how long you have been in Thailand ?

  7. Some immigration offices no longer allow you to make a new application when on a 7 day to leave the country stamp. This is because as of 29th of August the appeal to a higher officer has been rescinded, so you cannot get a new decision. The decision that you must leave the country is final.

I was never aware that you had any right of appeal if you applied for the 7 day (get out of dodge) extension ?

  8. hi.thanks for that.i guessing rent will be my biggest single out going for the month.any ideas on cost ? 10000baht p/m ? or in that area.is what im thinking.i will be looking at 3-6 months stay, probably from about may-june till sept or dec.

    Probably the ball park figure.

there are a lot of living cost elements to consider such as health insurance, visa and visa renewal costs etc. As a guide I would go by the requirement for retirement or married visa which requires you to demonstrate a THB 800,000 in a thai bank account. this is clearly what the authorities consider to be the amount required by a Farang to live in LOS for 1 year. This equates to THB 67,000/month (USD 2,222/month).

married visa which requires you to demonstrate a THB 800,000 in a thai bank account. incorrect 400.000 per year

Incorrect, an extension of stay based on marriage requires proof of 400,000 Baht, (or 40k monthly), NOT the visa. :-)

  9. Where is the "Thainess"?

Combined with the Thainess of taking two of the three eastbound lanes side of Sukhumvit for westbound traffic, all the time; the Thainess of ten minute, dumb, traffic light sequences; the Thainess was here:

Numerous small lanes, sub-roads, unnecessary intersections and U-turn are closed to allow traffic on the main roads flowing as smooth as possible.

Until this country creates a properly functioning police force, nothing will change on the roads. No number of zigzag lines will make drivers—who, for generations, have done absolutely anything they want with impunity—obey the road rules.

Obviously the creation of a properly functioning police force would be contingent on a complete overhaul of almost every aspect of Thai society, so it will never happen.

I think you will find that a comprehensive overhaul of the learner driver system and driving test is what is required. Not an overhaul of the Police, (in this case).
