  1. Here is a good site to check out the general prices of the CPAP units and masks for those interested. No good paying double the price if you can avoid it. Lots of reviews on each unit- huge price differences. I would avoid the ones that only have a few reviews and score 100%. As likely positive reviews from the maker.

Some affordable masks and units have some great ratings. Good site to compare.

  2. I would advise you to go to the sleep clinic at Sripat Hospital (I did it there) or RAM hospital. It should be somewhere around 10,000 baht. You cannot "try it" yourself as you have to experiment with a machine while hooked up to monitors to know what air pressure to use.

It has improved my quality of life immensely as before I started using CPAP I was tired all the time and was mostly just working and sleeping and now I have much more energy and seem to be slowly losing weight without trying.

Sripat gives you a list of manufacturers to choose from and they will let you try the machine first. At first I tried the lowest priced one and it did what it was supposed to do, but after a few days it is hard on the throat. I ended up buying from a German manufacturer whose machine was much more comfortable for long term use. Another guy whose doctor had told him to buy a CPAP ended up getting one because I was so happy with it. He told me that his life has improved a lot and he is glad that he finally did it.

Cheers we have booked me into the Sripat hospital. I will opt for whatever is lighter on the throat and comfort. If we are talking a few K bt compared to a better quality of sleep thus life- I will opt for the better German model.

I do not think I will bother staying overnight- I will simply request a unit and have the doctor monitor my progress with monthly appointments, weekly to start. Unless they charge excessive rate for the unit than buying direct. Something I will look into- if so I will simply buy a unit and have the doctor monitor my progress and show me the correct way to use it.

Does the unit actually pump oxygen in via a tank. My wife is thinking it may be a bit Michael Jacksonish yet if it works the whole family saids- GREAT about time. All joking that I will be in a bubble next... :) It should be 10K well spent.

I do not think the mouth guard unit will be any good for a chronic snorer, maybe a mild snorer I feel. Cheapest option yet I have had enough of trying gimic type devices that may work for mild sufferers.

Aircraft wise- no issues taking this on a plane? Anyway I will check out the size of these units tomorrow and hopefully have all my questions answered. Thanks again.

  3. My friend wishes to offload his Gold Toyota Corolla 2000 for only 220,000bt...

As I see on the forum that many do not believe there are 10 year old good cars for under 250K bt.

Anyway if you want a test drive please reply. It looks very good and looks far younger than its 10 years of age. Below are the details...

2000 Toyota Corolla GOLD with black tinted windows (Great MP3\CD Stereo system, black leather like seats).

Same same this one... Oh darn it will not let me post photo- just send u email if interested.Price:220,000bt java script:void(0);Km's:171,466Location: Thapae Gate, Chiang MaiTransmission:manualBody:4 dr sedanEngine:1.8 4 cyl.Fuel:gasolineDoors:4

  4. Is CPAP available in BKK?

Ive been using it for 12 years and it has saved my life.

Does anyone know where I can get a CPAP device to try from Chiang Mai??? An affordable clinic would be great if ANYONE can help me.

Great to hear Podman that I may have some hope after all, as it has changed your 'Quality of life' for the better. I have been a chronic snorer for many years and I am a fit 180cm 75kg 33yo man. My old man is a chronic snorer also so i think it is Genetic. My brother a big snorer and even my 1 year old son snores- lol, yes funny to see a baby snoring but not funny if u know what I mean...

As I know he will be in a world of pain from teens onwards with throat irritations, sleep issues, wake up very sleepy and sleepy through the day. etc when he older- as this has caused me much pain for many years both physically, emotionally and personally. But the snoring has got far worse the older I get and I am not old, as a 33yo man- however my old man's snoring is probably not AS chronic as mine and he is 60yo. So I got the worst of it. :D:D:D

I tried many devices, pillows, pills, lotions, potions, techniques, strategies, exercises etc- all to no avail. All except the mouth device that some swear by and the CPAP device u swear by Podman.... And laser and standard surgery that I really do not wish to get unless it becomes unbearable.

One sleep clinic in Aussie, Melbourne wished me to have tonsils out, etc yet said it may not make any difference. My father and brother had theirs out and made no difference. So I know it will not work and will cost me $8000 US in the process. In Thailand probably $1000, however a bit scared of being put to sleep here. Although i believe the medical system is good, you feel more a ease in your own world sometimes. :)

Plus their is the social side- I been married 3 times and snoring is sometimes the reason for large disagreements. Now I simply sleep in a room at the other end of the house to that of my son and wife.

Does anyone know where I can get a CPAP device to try from Chiang Mai??? As I am guessing it will be more affordable than grabbing one is Aussie in a couple of months... HELP would be highly appreciated. Cheers :D

  5. CMai Immigration Officer stated most of the above----

    1) Come with no Visa from eligible country then only re-entry by land for 15 days at border.

    2) You can only do this 3 times....

    3) That means 30 + 15 + 15 + 15 only in a 6 month period only (Officially)

    4) Has anyone tried for a 4th consequtive entry- if so what happened??? As I worked out I only need 10 extra days till my flight home.

Then I back after a couple of months with a Biz or Family Visa, as I used to get year after year...

I guess you still need to do the border runs every 3 months like I did from 2003 to 2008, on a biz or family Visa?

Have thai son and thai partner so family Visa fine. Have a Co Ltd in Thailand, so biz Visa fine. Once back in Oz. Not sure you can get work permit on Family Visa so always used to get Biz Visa. Simply show Co Ltd papers, etc and stamped per year.

Anyway it looks like a 10 day overstay will be the cheapest option- 5000bt. Or I think you can get 1 last extension from CMAI Immigration for 7 final days for 1900bt + 1500bt for 3 day overstay

2 Runs to go and 1 extension- pay the 3 day overstay on the way out- Done and Done.

    NOW I KNOW............ :):D

  6. They changed the rulez in Dec 2008 - if you come overland you get 15 days - and they implemented too. Shame you didn't take advantage of the free visa. You've just rented a car long-term right? Might make that Poipet shenanigans seem like a nice option. Or keep doing Mae Sai runs but I guess you're limited to just two more.

Is it possible to get more than 1 x 15 day Visa? Ahhh I been told you will be refused a 2nd time???? Are you saying you get a MAX of 3 x 15 day Visa--- Well that get me to only late May.....Mid June needed. Leaving either the Poipet minibus option for approx. 8K for 60 day Visa or fly OS to apply for a 60 Day Tourist Visa then fly back or 30 day then can get a 30 day extension.

Whilst more of a hassle that means 3 or 4 more Visa runs of 15 days, which seems impossible..... Limited to 3 x 15 days before needing to leave country. Then come back by air.

But you suggest I can drive over to Poipet and pay for a 60 Tourist Visa for a few K bt? Long drive, yet 1 long drive maybe worth more than 3 to 4 Mai Sai trips...

Any thoughts... Thxs for your help.

  7. I had planned a near 3 month stay in North Thailand b4 heading back to Aussie approx 10th June....

Planned that I would simply need to perform 2 Visa ran's in that time. As I have been coming off and on to Thai for a decade. Yet not since Nov 2008... So I niavely thought everything was the same.

So I arrive on 18th March............Visa run to Mai Sai on 17th April........

To my SHOCK I am stamped with a Visa lasting only until 30th April...... :)

I was counting on an initial 30 day (Which I got being from Aussie)......But now told rules have changed and you can only get an extra 15 days 1 time. Then you must go back to your own country.... So Immigration in Changmai states.

Yet others tell me I can fly to PP, Cambodia and get 30 day tourist entry.... BUT that still not enough and is a large extra expense to goto PP, Cambodia x2 up and back to ensure I have 60 more days.

Can anyone please tell me my options to stay until mid June, being approx 45 days after my supposed last 15 day extension.

I have read that some use a service in BKK that takes you to Poipet, u stay 2 nights in a hotel and they go get a 60 Tourist Visa for you from the Cambodian capital. Is this true? Can anyone recommend a company to take this trip for 2 days? I hear the cost in total is approx 8000-9000 bt.

I am unsure why the thai government have chosen to make it more difficult to stay.... As many wish to stay and spend money in their country for well over 1 month and 15 days. I could understand a 6 month cap, but 1 month + 15 final days is very harse now.

You would think they would be trying to get more tourists, not throw us out of the country so quickly.

Any help would be appreciated? Thanks.

I planned to get a Business Visa next time to stop the Tourist Visa foolish rules. As they do not seem to want long term tourists anymore- pity. The country having enough trouble as is....who are the fools who change these rules. And yes I am a fool for not checking up on the latest tourist visa changes in the last 1.5 years. :D Cheers Jay

  8. Highly recommend the TEFL 4-week courses offered by an outfit that holds classes both in Bangkok and Phnom Penh, sponsored and accredited by a college in the U.K. (an easy Google search should identify the institution for you).

I have a bachelor's and master's degree in education, but took a 25-year business detour since getting those degrees. When coming to Thailand to teach, I took one of these TEFL courses as a refresher. It was something like getting the basics of my bachelor's program condensed into one week, with heavy emphasis on practical instruction methods and techniques.

It was conveniently held on weekends, so I could come down from my upcountry teaching job to attend the classes, and be back in the classroom on Monday morning.

I was impressed with the caliber of teaching, the motivated students, good teacher-to-student ratio, and a good place to get one's foot in the door for teaching in Thailand. There was ample in-class practice opportunities, and a two-week extension to the course allowed actual in-local-school practice teaching with Thai students to see if you could handle a classroom situation.

In addition, it was one of the less expensive TEFL programs, and I felt I got my every baht's worth.

Lastly, I'm getting no commission from this post!

There are so many courses out there- it is hard to get anyone to state a name or website recommendation with costs.

Can you please give the details of the one you recommended?

I to have a BA and Masters in education from 12 years ago and simply would like a refresher after being in IT for 12 years.

    Cheers Jay :)

  9. Come on- who trusts these sites and actually pays them money? Photoshop can make my butt look pretty...

Anyone with 1st hand exp. or some interesting stories of the internet blind dates???

I noted that many girls in their early 20's want guys over 40... we 20 and 30 something guys miss out once again- yer right.

Just walk down the street for a few min to gain a dozen numbers.

  10. No go- the airport guys will not come down under 17K pm. So a quick flight to BKK and picked a newish Honda Civic for 9K pm on a 6 month contract- Bargain. If I hand back before the 6 months is up then they keep the 9K Bond- fair is fair. Will save me over 50K over the 6 month period. Competition counts- CMai lacks it in the car renting game and purchasing.

Appears some great deals to be had in buying at some BKK auctions are to be had also- so now we all know the car guys can make some fine money driving their auction bargains from BKK and registering them in CMai. Good to know. :)

  11. Inspired, naturally, by this thread, I picked up a pizza at Duke's today, for my first pizza ever in Chiangmai! Daaaaaaammmmmnnnnn, but that was a seriously good pizza. Of course I afterwards immediately voted for Duke's, but it's a bit of an odd vote, based as it is on no comparison to any of the other places listed. :)

Darn it this thrad has made me very very hungry now- I going across the road to grab a pizza from Duke's now. Then give my vote- I used to get a great smoked salmon pizza from an Italian restuarant in Soi 2 Maun Maung Rd- I think it was.... Think I will try find them as well then give a vote. It was pricy but worth every mouth watering bite

Next thread should be best cheese cakes and meat pies in Chiangmai. I am missing both after not having either for many months. :D

Agree with the Pizza wars in Melbourne Aussie, some great pizza's and prices down under. $5 for some great pizza's- far less than in CMai. Dominos Vs Pizza Hut mostly in Aussie.

  12. We used an agent, but sold it via a neighbour. Still had to pay the agent fee, and also a small fee to the neighbour for finding a buyer. I would suggest give it a year and try to sell it yourself first. If there are no takers after a few months you might need to drop the price (we did), and it sold quickly. Being second hand, Thai don't like to pay a lot. They will look for a bargain, like anyone else. If you can wait 2-3-4 years to sell then hold up the price. We spent quite a bit on our place and I would say we barely broke even on the sale.

You must be a soft lad to pay the Agent when your neighbour found a buyer .Grow some balls ,is my advice .

I agree to an extent, having been a property and business broker in Thailand a decade ago. We found we got bypassed very often, when we spent a lot on marketing the businesses and properties for sale. The agent contract you sign really means very little, as it takes 3 years in civil court to try sue you to pay the 3% when it does sell VIA the agent. Or under an exclusive contract. So I bailed on that business after a year of operating it. As I simply had too many litigation cases to deal with after 1 year- downing in paperwork and wa no longer enjoyable experience.

So i am looking at this from the other side of the fence. Yes there are good and bad agents. There are agents whom get a million baht for a business and give the thai owner 100,000bt. So all types of tricks occur. There are agents who do a great deal of advertising and work for their 3% and they deserve the money. Ultimately whether you pay them it is up to you. They may try threaten you to get their commission, as many may know it takes 3+ years to wait to be heard in civil court. Then the agent still may get nothing.

Most agents now try to keep the buyers and sellers away from each other. Yet many men have a Thai girl whom can go direct to the property or business and bargain with the owner- I found. We would hear it had already sold weeks later whilst we were still paying 1000s of baht to advertise it. Or if you speak Thai, go bargain for yourself. Bypassing the agent is easy- yet whether you do it depends on how ethical you are. If the agent did nothing- pay nothing but look out for some heavy intimidation tactics and debt collectors (Often police debt collectors)- if agent did a good job- pay them what you agreed and all will be good.

Sunbelt and Century 21 are very wary of these facts and go out of their way to have a team of lawyers have you sign off on everything under the sun to rightfully protect their 3%. Or 6% in terms of business sale. Stick to the more ethical agents and not the no names- unless you recommended to them by a trusted friend. :)

  13. use P & P travel,

    simply the best.

    ask for Miauw.

Agree, had a CMai GH for a few years and we used to go through them for customers. Then naturally charge a service fee on top... so go direct. And yes ask for Miaw. Yet we compared prices with World Express to see who could beat who as apart of our service for customers. Play them off against each other- they expect it.

Yet I find for many flights particularly in SE Asia they have an impossible time beating the rates of Air Asia promotions on the internet. You might as well book SE Asian flights with Air Asia for the cheapest. Yet P & P will still try match (Even if they make nothing) and you get the service as they wish you to come back for more. Top agency. Thumbs UP. :)

  14. In the OP you talk with such a lack of nous then further down you're laying into the Singaporean guy, in a very obsessive, repetitive fashion. It seems so incongruous I had to check several times that the authors were the same. Anyway, yesterday the first place I walked into gave me a very good deal. A very decent, newish Vios. I asked how much for a month and he said 18K straightaway - obviously you could get that down a lot. Don't know the place near the airport - my friend went - are there any others besides that place just past Rim Ping?

Sounds like the places near the Airport are the winners- 700bt pd and less than 18K pm. Still high. I still think the 700bt pd guys may come down to 12-13K + Bond per month. Yet 18K for a newish car is a good deal.

Would be nice to hear of some exact details of these car places giving OK deals?

I got stuck into the Singa guy as he just wasted nearly my whole day in the extreme heat. He had cars starting from only 9K pm... That is half the cost of anywhere else.

Something is very suss with that operation. All I am saying is those who buy from him, simply check out that he is legit... l am not obsessive- lol- just annoyed he bailed after I mentioned the differing names on the book work. After showing me several cars during the day. :D

Simply check him out- beware of the 'Mr Tan man'. :) If he is legit we have a definate winner in Chaing Mai for rental car deals.

  15. After 4 interested parties, 2 cancelled, so I SMSed the one remainder to tell him we will see how we go for next week instead. As not enough interest due to short notice.

As it was short notice- we may have better luck next week.

The poster whom stated losing 1 mil bt not much- I lost over 1 mil aussie bucks in 2008 in the crash (35 mil bt). 70% of my savings at the lowest point yet making a come back since the lows of Jan-March 09. As the stock market worldwide has been doing much better in the last year.

We still must watch out for the EU debt ridden countries, further financial instos issues, etc but anyone who invested in the last year has made good money. Or they are starting to get money back from the 2008 crash, like myself. It will still be a volitile ride IMO.

Anyone still interested in forming this CMai group- how's next Sunday Lunch 1pm at Montri? Gives everyone plenty of notice.

Let us see if we can get 10 odd interested- if more- good. Novice to experienced all welcome. No touting of fee services please.

SMS to confirm for sure- not confirming on the thread. Cheers Jeremy 0817729320

  16. In terms of the 120K Honda Civic's for sale I saw them at an auction in Chon Buri a couple years back... 1999 Honda's going for around 120K-140K. Sounds like they would be approx 200-250K in CMai, maybe we onto something.

Sounds like some good competition down in BKK, Chon Buri and Pattaya. Not as much in CMai thus the prices are a lot more. In terms of rentals and cars for sale.

Last car I rented was for 10K pm 5 years old from pattaya and I was living in Cmai in 2007. I guess I will take a trip down there again and see if the competition is still as good. If they a bit over half the price it will be worth the effort...

Yet I have not been back since 2007, so I will see.

  17. check with mr. tan, a reliable singapore man living in mae rim.

Mr Tan, does not even have a shop front and his cars are not even in his name. He tells you a price then up's the Bond as you pull out your money. He operates from a service station coffee shop and is secretive about where his cars are kept. Claims he only deals with NGO customers or long termers. Something very suspicious about this Mr tan- the Susuki 4x4 he tried to rent to me. When asking about why the car's paperwork in a Farang name he got all nervous and took off very quickly soon after. He advertising in Church newsletters, etc. No website, no shop front and cars not in his name. Takes 30 min to collect each car for u to look at and operate in Mae Rim Caltex servo without them knowing. Very secretive about the location of his cars... Should forward his details onto the local police to check him out, whether he ligit.

If a James xxx has had his 4WD stolen I know where it is..........

He wants a huge Bond yet offers a good monthly rent. Whether they are his cars or not- who knows. Very suspicious operation. Did not wish to take the chance and he upped the price as soon as I started asking about the farang name mentioned in the car books.

As some Thai's tell me, they cannot sell stolen cars in another's name, yet they do rent out to us silly farangs in Chiangmai- apparently. The Thai girl with me as a translator was very suspicious also- very curious. Seem thai to us, yet they SNG and speak some Thai and English- very suss... IMO

Check out your car books from Khun Tan to see if in his name- you maybe renting stolen cars, maybe not but check it out just in case. He maybe totally legit and simply an agent and does not pay rent to offer lower rents- yet who knows??? :)

  18. So this double entry gives you a 30 + 30 day Tourist Visa in Thailand? For $70US

U get an extra 30 days by paying 1900bt to Thai Immigration for an extension ??? 90 days in full then do it over again.

U fly to PP then go see who to get this double entry Visa? At the Airport or the Thai Embassy ???

Sounds like good value now flights are 2600bt each way to PP (Incl. Tax). By land u could do it cheaper but it takes you forever in the extreme heat.

90 Days for approx $250 (Flights, Visa's) and spend a few days seeing the sights of PP whilst there- sounds like a good option.

Another option another poster posted on another thread (Lazier Option for those interested) was paying 9500bt for bus to Poipet then the agents go get the double entry for you in PP... takes 2 days and he never had an issue. Stays in the Casino hotel for 2 days whilst waits for his multi entry Visa. Takes a 3.5 hr bus trip to Poipet then waits then back again.

Both options sound much the same price for 90 days worth of Tourist Visa's- if I am correct.

I came to Thailand with no Visa, so got a 30 day stamp, went to mai Sai expecting another 30 days only to get 15 days. Now need another 60-90 days. Sounds like the above options are my best bets, unless advised otherwised. Looking at the cheapest and easiest option and Mai Sai Visa Run is no longer it....

As I will be getting a B Visa in Aussie when return in July. But in the meantime.................? PP trip I guess with Double entry Visa seems like the easiest and most affordable option???

  19. TwentyK sounds obviously too much. Got to shop around, the guy that was all smiles giving you a great deal last time suddenly doesn't remember you and the prices have shot up next time you go. I'm used to getting 700/day on the cheapest models for just a three or four day rental. The place down the airport are renting out nice-looking Toyotas for a similar rate on a day-by-day basis. TwentyK for a whole month is high.

Surely u would think that if they are offering you 700bt pd, then they would half the amount for pm rental. As you typically get if renting in a hotel for 1000bt per night, then ask about monthy and it is half that rate. As typically they are lucky to get the money up front with Bond and on daily more hassles, more people, etc.

    700bt x 30 = 21000bt

I am sure they would take 12000bt pm if offerred with a Bond. Which guys was it near the Airport?

  20. Is it just me or are the car rental prices simply insane in CMAI. In Pattaya and BKK you can get some good monthy deals but CMAI dealers seem 50% more. They seem to think that we all need the latest newest show off car, when in reality many of us need a car to get from A to B. Maybe I been going to the wrong places... Quotes of 20K bt seem stupid, when u get a car for nearly half that in Pattaya.

I found out that Insurance companies will not give first class insurance on cars over 10 years old but some will give on 15 years.

Come on- u can get a half decent 7-10 year old Honda Civic for $4000 (120000bt). Surely they can rent out for 10K bt pm and simply grab a Bond to cover dink or damage.

In Aussie one of the most popular companies for rentals is 'Rent a Bomb'... $20 per day for a 10 year old car, no hassle. Not sure how 'Rent a BOMB' would go down in SE Asia :) but you get my drift in terms of simply getting a standard car for a good price.

Especially with less tourists I thought they would be more competitive- seems not so for cars.

Hotels, Motorbikes, massages, etc, etc are unbelieveable cheap in CMai but not cars for whatever reason.

Anyone come across any good car mobs that just offer basic cars at a good monthy rate? :D

  21. Anyone whom leaving number I am SMSing a meet at Montri @ Thapae Gate for the CMAI Stock broking meet 7pm tomorrow. Might as well see how many show up. Should be worthwhile to meet up with like minded people making a living from trading or wishing too. Semi retired or not.

It should be a worthwhile meet, if you interested in trading. Experienced or not. You welcome to come along.

SMS me on 0817729320 if you are in.

    Cheers

    Jeremy

  22. Put me down- I been a qualified stock broker in Aussie for a few years. Having semi-retired to CMai in my 30s- although I did get hit hard in the Financial Crisis of 2008... Lost a mil or so. Now I Day Trade ASX, options trade.... looking at investing in Fountier markets like Cambodia's new market.

As the risks can be worth it, if u play them right and the risk is heavily outweighed by reward.

I only invest in a MAX of 12 companies per time, as I need to know their operations inside out.

For income I sell covered options on BHP and RIO shares to gain a few extra K pm to live on without affecting capital growth.

Looking to exit my income made in Aussie for overseas havens, as they stick me for nearly 50% on income earnt pm.

Contact me on 0817729320.... I suggest we make a group dinner at Montri @ Thapae Gate to get the ball rolling.

Say Tomorrow Dinner for those interested- 7pm? Who's in?

    Cheers

    Jeremy

  23. I had no idea that the border runs only allow a 14 day extension 1 time only, after you enter thailand without a Visa from an eligible 30 day free Visa. I had not been in Thailand for a few years....

I was planning to get my Non Immigrant Business Visa, as I have a Thai company from 2005 and have done this before. Yet I thought i would simply look around at investment businesses to purchase for 3-4 months first.

Now I do not know what to do to extend my Tourist Visa for 4 months- border runs will not do it.

I have a flight booked to Cambodia but i am unsure if i can get a 60 or 90 day holiday or even Business Visa from there??? Cambodia is very easy to get a Business Visa once you are there. I do not wish to go all the way back to Aussie for another 3 months, as I had planned.

What are my options to get another couple of months out of my Visa's before a Thai Business Visa in July 2010? 90 day would be ideal but 60 more days is needed at the very least. Can I do what I need to do from Phenon Phen? Thxs. Cheers Jay :)
