  1. So, I take it that most gamers here are PC gamers? Does that mean that consoles are harder to come by, or not of good make, or just everyone prefers PC?

I don't think thats it. If nothing else, PS2 copies are a lot more reliable than pc games (no cracks etc). It's probably more than PC have much larger market penetration amongst the typical TV reader (given that you need access to a PC to read it!)

As for me, I'm PC, PS2, XBox and PSP, all in equal amounts, or dependant on whats out. Currently...

    PC: Pirates!, Outpost Kaloki

XBox: Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike, Black Hawk Down, KOTOR II, NBA Street V3

PS2: Amplitude, Katamari Damacy, Sly 2

    PSP: Wipeout, Ridger Racers, Lumines

And I'm playing Monkey Island II on SCUMMVM on my PDA :o Just like being 20 again and in front of an Amiga :D

At least, thats what I do when I'm not working :D

  2. The HP authorized service centre is on Rama 4, across from the entrance to Lumpini Park, in the U Chu Liang (HSBC) building on the third floor. I'd suggest you take your machine there. They aren't the fastest or the cheapest, but at least they will get it right, and not be a jury-rigged / half *ssed fixit man job.

oh excellent, that'll be even better.

    cheers for that

  3. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to take my printer (fax / scanner - it's a HP allinone) to get it fixed? It seems to be a problem at bootup with the scanner head being stuck.

It's out of warrenty, but only 16 months old, perfect condition except this one thing.

I know panthip is full of fixit places, but would like a recommendation if possible.

    thx all

  4. Good news for PSP owner cause Sony is releasing PSP internet web browser next week.
TOKYO - Sony officials Thursday said the company will release a software upgrade that will let the PlayStation Portable video game system surf the Web without a cumbersome software trick.

But I'm wondering how do I get this software into my PSP? :o

News yes, good news? ermm... not if you want to carry on playing copies on your PSP!

  5. For playing games here in Thailand, the choice is a no-brainer:PS2.  The choice of games (copied) is waaaaaaaaaay better.  The X-box has good online gaming, but that's not easy to do here.

Sorry but thats complete rubbish. I have both a PS2 and Xbox and I have no trouble finding every Xbox game I want at MBK or Panthip or Fortune Town. While you will see that there are more PS2 games, that's because there *are* more PS2 games in the world, nothing to do with copies.

My view? I play the Xbox more these days, the games coming out are just of higher quality, stuff like KOTOR II, Jade Empire and so on. Not to mention that so many games are now multi-platform so the choice is simple: xbox version.

However, PS2 has a very good selection of older games, from excellent platformers (Jak, Ratchett) to things like Amplitude, Rez and all those bizarre Jap games and RPGs.

  6. My adsl usually runs totally fine and i can easily grab 2gig in 12hours. But anyway, the problem is between the thailand - Korea line, pings quadruple in length on that hop :o

Nephilim may i ask what package ur on (ie meg) and is it P2P also.

    Just curious

    regards

    Dublish.

Im on the True 512k / 256k and my fastest d/l occur from private FTPs and nntp accounts. Via nntp i can get 2gig in about 14 hours, which is comparable to back in the UK.

P2P sucks in this country, I don't know why. No matter which client, it's slow.

  7. bought it on wedensday, the level of thai is a real pain, even in game menus and mission breifings are in thai. I've had a thai look for a langauge option menu but they couldn't find one.

I use gprs so won't be playing online, single player it's pretty boring more so than the first battlefield or vietnam versions. Also seems impossible to change the number of bots on your team, used to love playing alone gainst a 32 bot enemy on older versions.

I'm running p4 3.2ht with a 6600gt gfx card and it runs only just fast enough at 1024*768

It's in Thai? Wow, I didnt expect that - especially not in-game. Hmm. Ok, thanks for that, I won't bother getting it :o

  8. I'm looking for a way to print out a sample of all the fonts installed on my computer. Is anyone aware of a method or a program to accomplish this?

Any suggestions / advisement greatly appreciated!

I frequently end up digging through over 16000 fonts and one of the best apps I have, which also prints samples (from your installed folder, or any fodler that you want) is called The Font Thing, you can get it here:

Yes, it was written SIX years ago, but it does work well and it's free.

    cheers

  9. I would recommend going away from using the USB modem if you are planning on enabling file and printer sharing.

i.e. Either you leave yourself wide open to attack, or you install firewall software on the PC with the internet connection, and have the hassle of getting it to still share files with the other PC on the local network (while not sharing them out on the internet).

A router would make things a LOT simpler, and if you want to roam with the laptop, you can can get one with both wired and wi-fi connections - so you could roam with the laptop... (just remember that the default security settings on most wireless equipment is basically OFF - so you do have to change things, but it's not that difficult).

However, you won't find any "professional" network installer that will put in a crossover cable to share internet access on another PC with a USB ADSL connection. - You can get it working - but that's a hobbyist solution if ever there was one...

I don't want crossover, that was the whole point: I tried it and couldnt get it to work. I run a firewall already and have in the past configured them to allow networking, so thats not a problem.

  10. All,

having been to Penang a few times for a multi-entry tourist visa, I'm wondering if there are other, better / cheaper agents down there and who do you recommend?

typically I call a western guy in hat yai and he arranges everything with an indian bloke in Penang, not far from Cititel / Malaysia Hotel.

if anyone has any good contacts for me to call etc, please let me know, along with price.

also, is it possible, in anyones experience to get a 4-entry tourist visa there?

    thanks

    neph.

  11. None of this is difficult and it sounds like you know enough to do it yourself.

Is there some specific aspect of networking that makes you gun shy?

Something specific? Kind of. I'm sick of it. Sometimes it all works, then I reboot and nothing works. Or the printer works, or the internet sharing works. Or then sometimes a pc wont even boot with the network cable plugged in! It's all so ###### random that I'd rather just give someone some $$$, someone who can actually sit down and say "yes, I know why this isn't working and yes I can get it working". That's it, basically.

XP Home has very poor networking capability  :o  :D

XP-Pro is far better and will take a couple of hours to upgrade over your Home version (make sure you make a backup).

Bite the bullet, you will save much more time than it costs to upgrade to a proper operating system.

You can easily do this yourself.

The hardware is going to cost you around 2k for a decent (3-Com or D-link) hub and a slack handful of cables, do you already have an ADSL router (not a USB modem)??, if not, buy one (get one with a built in hub so you save on that cost), much less hassle than trying to use Windows connection sharing.

Honestly XP-Pro will just work for internet, and a tiny bit of setup will get file and printer sharing on the road as well.

We arn't upgrading. I have heard nothing good about an actual upgrade, it would require reformat and clean install (I'm ok with doing this, but I simply do not have the time).

I don't have an adsl router, I have a bog standard USB modem from True. I had a network same as what I want here, back in the UK, with a USB modem and I used a proxy to get internet connection shared (this was before XP).

    Cheers

  12. Hi

We are looking for someone to drop by and network two pcs together for us. I have ben trying to get a crossover cable connection up and running, to no avail. I am computer savvy, but networking gives me a headache and I'd rather pay an expert to do it quickly and easily.

    Details:

1 desktop, 1 laptop, both XP Home (no "you need to charge to pro", please, we work at home and dont have time to reformat and all that). Both PCs in fine working order, fairly high spec and very well maintained.

Need: a network, full printer and file sharing and ADSL sharing for all protocols (smtp, ftp, http, nntp etc etc).

You'll have to supply a good hub and a couple of cables. I know the rough cost of this, so no 2000B solutions please :o Both PCs have standard network adaptors.

That said if you can build a wifi network for a good price, let us know :D The laptop is ready for wifi, the desktop isnt.

We need as little downtime as possible, so we are looking for someone who cna set it up and trouble shoot quickly - no hobbyists who'll try and get it working through trial and error. I can do that.

If you are interested, we are easy to get to (Asok area) - send an email to us and let us know your rate and details and we'll chat more. his_email AT hotmail.com

    Many thanks

    Neph.

  13. I thought I'd just finish this up with my experiences over the last two days.

Firstly I went to Jacks Golf to ask if I could go to Poipet with just my old and new passports and have them stamp me out in the old etc etc. They called the border while I was there and the answer was a resolute no, they were not allowed to do that (anymore).

So I trundled over to Immigration and, out of curiosity, asked them the same and they also said no, definetly not.

So I transfered my visa. Very simple process so long as you have the right photocopies / docs, which as said are:

    • new passport

    • copy of new passport data page

    • old passport

    • copy of old passport data page

    • copy of old passport visa

    • copy of old passport showing last visa entrance stamp

    • copy of old passport departure card

    • original letter from embassy indicating that the new passport is a replacement for the old

I also took the recipt for my new passport, but they didnt want that.

All i nall took 5 minutes, there and then and next day I went off to Poipet as usual and everythings fine.

    Thanks for all the advice.

    Neph.

PS I was thinking, looking at this board, I'd be so screwed without all the advice over the last couple of years!

  14. Nit noi means a little or a little bit. You need to provide the context in which you want to use 'only small' as I can think of few ways to say this depending on the situation.

Sorry, yes, more context. It's actually at the gym. Every day i go and they give me a big and a small towel and I only ever want the small one :o So I'd just like to be able to say "only small" ("just small", "small only" or whatever the appropriate response would be). Reading responses, "เอาอันเล็ก ao an lek" seems close to the desired response?

While I'm here, could anyone type the thai characters that would equate as closel as possible to "His Words"? I have a Thai k/b so can reproduce them. There is no context to this, it is simple the name of my website.

    many thanks everyone

    neph.
