Fortunately, I've had completely different experiences than you, and I'm enjoying my stay in Thailand.

Most of the bad things quoted could be any country in the world.As times goes on i think Thailand will get better not worse,for me anyway.Always remember my first visit to Arenal,Spain and the locals were out with knives, sticks,bats and shouting where are de english bastards.So to answer your question i have totaly different experiences and after 6 years bring on the next 25,i love it here.

If he has never played pool before he will beat most of the top players in Pattaya,with maybe the exception of scouse John,Mat,Nop and Charlie.There are some good tasty players in Pattaya and always beat the Bangkok lads

There has been a lot of talk about the 'bad' Thai women. About the lies etc. So this aims to help rectify some of that.

Mainstream Thai women are like women everywhere - there are good ones and bad ones. Most Thais are nice and honest people, but so many farangs seem to make bad choices and marry the first bargirl that shags them. Not all bargirls are bad, but many of them do continue to have the problems that got them into the bars in the first place - alcohol, drugs, gambling, kids, scrounging families, deadbeat boyfriends, criminality or criminal associations. So many guys expect all these problems to disappear as soon as they marry, but of course they don't, and more often than not it all ends in tears.

I for one have never been stitched up by a thai woman,and none of my friends have,even though one marriage has folded and she wanted nothing from him.Some have ex bg ladies and some have non bg ladies.They are ALL the same in attitude,looks upbringing etc etc.There are truly beautiful(heart) ladies about even in the bar scene but i believe many of the farangs who get stitched up are the older guys with very young girls who are so immature.

I have many many friends here in Pattaya and not one have a gogo dancer as a gf,aint that funny lol lol.

I have only recently discovered that the sex pests are in the minority, since I met up with a relative and her husband here I have been introduced to a completely different side of BKK. Everyday working Thais and farrangs who do not just speak about bar girls and actually spend their time contributing positively to Thai society, all different backgrounds and levels of wealth but importantly morally grounded, compassionate, fun, intelligent people. I think it is far too easy to come here and get in with the wrong crowd, or lose yourself in bars. Lets face it, you have to question the sanity of somebody who drinks all the time and surrounds themselves with prostitutes in seedy bars, then chooses to cast aspersions on a whole nation of women based on his experience of soi cowboy/nana etc.

I do agree with some of the things you say except somebody that wants sex is not a pest.I also do agree that to waste your life drinking every day is not a good idea,but to have women all over you isnt that bad is it??? lol.My life is surrounded by wonderful people which totaly contradicts some of the silly farang Bangkokonians who always knock Pattaya,even though many come down here for a weekend of debauchery away from their white faced middle class UNi,excecutive,not a bargirl wives.

I was accused of being too friendly to a student, we were best friends, and that was that, I had visited her family and everything was just friendship, but some teachers started talking and eventually I lost my job, but I did not care that much as it was not a good place to work (It was a University).

I'm afraid this shows a real lack of judgement and awareness of professional standards. Even when working at a university you have to retain some kind of professional distance. I was always taught that to be FRIENDLY is fine (in fact, very important, in my opinion!), but to be FRIENDS is to overstep the mark. Even if you colleagues and bosses thought it was fine, which I seriously doubt, how do you think the other students would view it? At the very least they would expect you to show favouritism in marking, etc. Really... you have to maintain professional boudaries if you want to be treated as a professional...

I was professional enough to tell the University and also I made them aware that it would be considered unfair if I taught that student. I used my brain and better judgement.

If you look around at Universities or Schools, you always have the same students around the Thai Teachers, carrying their bags etc. Then those students do tests with those Thai teachers, is that favouritism? I think so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boundaries have to be kept that is clear, but it works for Thai teachers as well, not just Farang.

Based on your post,you must have told the Uni after you got caught being friends with a student.A total lack of judgement like the other poster said.The family have not taken care of her daughter too,as if it was my young daughter and you were hanging around,sorry but you would be out of my house very quickly.

Thanks. I see my job in this situation as 1) protecting the students and 2) protecting the teacher. These situations are always sensitive, but it's a very slippery slope if you start firing people based on unfounded suspicion.

Protect the teacher????? cant agree with that,but you should be honest with him and dont judge,and listen to the evidence.Its no good saying he was a model teacher then as soon as he is having problems with his wife,he starts being a horny guy to a student.Can you honestly say he has good work ethics to the school,because i dont think he has.You cannot be a teacher,no matter how good and start trying it on with young kids.

Really? You don't know? Thai women want to be whiter as it looks higher caste. The same reason they want light skinned men. The whiter and more Chinese looking the better, in their view. We do not have a caste system and we do not look at darker (tanned or naturally) people in our home countries and think "poor, uneducated, crass, not as good" but the Thais definitely do.

You ever see what Thai women think as handsome and a great catch when it comes to Thai men, its not the muscular athletic dark guy, its the weenie skinny lilly white look like a girl fall over if you blew on him guy. He looks higher caste.

This is why Thais think we as falangs are so strange, we "get off the boat" and right away hook up with some ugly dark skinned farm girl (the ugly part is just coincidence). The kind of girl that is last on the list of a Thai mans for picking up.

I know he has admitted to wrong doing but this worries me that there are many fake degrees about,and will reduce the quality of teaching in schools.All the ones sticking up for him,are you teachers and have you got fake degrees,as the OP seems to have been in touch with some of you.

Maybe they are tracking down you criminals so the kids can get a better education,and no proper degrees could mean a teacher might be a criiminal or worse.

The karaoki bars and street eating places are packed out with thais.Other than Pattaya and Bangkok are other places in Thailand dead too ???

How anybody can say that Pattaya is more sleazy than BK must be living in cuckoo land.The place stinks and is over run with touts and the rats are much bigger than the Pattaya stray cats.I agrree that Pattaya has same same as far as the sex industry but the place is much more open and the fresh sea air is a benefit to ones health,and the stench isnt over bearing like BK.

This is not a knock for BK but guys get real,Pattaya is much much nicer place to drink and eat unless you are hi-so and go the exclusive places,but the OP is realy talking about the average expat or tourist.not the snooty Farang Bangkok numties.

Maybe there are about 10 that are busy so it does keep the odds down lol.The biggest problem is the idiotic leaders of the Provinces here,i could well imagine that the Tourism board would try to keep things as quiet as possible and not give a fig about who contracts it.The top people and hi-so will get the medicine not the vast majority of the country.You can imagine some of the new ladies and men from other parts of Thailand coming to the tourist areas that already have this flu.

I understand what you are saying. I was staying and working in town during the 80s and frequently see a blanket of brownish haze covering BKK in the late afternoons from my office on the 19th floor (Rajdamri). To avoid the air pollution, I bought my first condo in 1994 which is 5km off Bangna-trad, with my balcony overlooking a 25 rai abandoned ricefield (and it is still undeveloped).

Been staying there for 15 years. I bought the next door unit and is extending this home, and I am presently residing in Prakhanong between Feb and Aug, and will move back when refurbishment is completed.

The problems started a long long time before Ian Dowie came to Newcastle and surely even you must admit after seeing the they way Ashley runs the club that Keegan was 100% correct to leave the club as Dennis Wise was buying and selling players behind his back, and it was being run in the most amateurish way imaginable.

I did say the club was a complete shambles,but what i was trying to say if it didnt come over that way,was that Shearer came as the saviour and he bought in a dipstick to make the decisions on the field,a bit silly if you ask me,as Shearer was supposed to be the main man.We all know now that this decison was a scam like some of the other ones,as Shearer didnt realy do that much,he looked lost on the touch line.
