I am looking at putting in a couple hundred meters of hedge. Since sai gawli is a ficus, I am guessing it is pretty easy to propagate. Anybody know? Would stem cuttings take pretty easily? Saw on another forum that cinnamon powder works as a 'natural' rooting hormone, anybody ever try this? Thanks for any constructive suggestions.

Ask local 4 star hotels if they can recommend someone?

Sorry, no luck resizing a photo file down to 100mb. It is an Otto brand, model SC-201, 1.5 liter capacity. Has low, high, and auto controls. Didn't check, but auto should take it to high temp and then reduce to low. Outside part is this aluminum but inside is pretty hefty ceramic with glass lid.
Thin aluminum, not 'this' aluminium . Pretty cheap, but for about 550 can't complain.

I got it thinking of cooking beans without having to stir them all day, but have been using it for milk for chai tea and cooking oatmeal while we shower so far. Not fast, but it is a slow cooker ?

Went to the Bali resto last year, nice to see the expanded menu. Owner very friendly. Agree that Indonesian food is largely unknown but can be quite good.

The fairly new Kitchen/ hotel shop, just about 100 mts before you turn on the oneway system coming from Samui Immigration has some Japanese crock pots, left side as you go in the the door.... not cheap starting at about 1400 baht to 2700 baht. The sign says they are good for stove or oven cooking....
This store has just about everything for the kitchen.....
From experience the cheap ones sometimes seen in Tesco mall, will crack very easily....
Just bought a quite small slow cooker 'crock pot' at Home Pro. About 550 baht. Only used it to heat up milk so far but looks good for slow cooking a small meal, good for single people.

Plus tax and surcharges, around 5,000 baht for round trip

Better to walk the beach OR the sidewalk on the next road over--the one behind the Mall along the Lake and which then juts over to the water treatment facility and the Police Station.
Is there actually a functioning waste water treatment plant there? Or perhaps a treatment facility for 'fresh' water? Any other working waste water treatment facilities on Samui?

Check if AT&T has better coverage where you will be. Similar plans available, again, not at airport. If you want to have a phone still on with Thai sim (and receive SMSs free) and use it for WiFi you can turn off data roaming entirely by pressing *129*1#
Turn back on with *129*2#
This is forAIS

The ferry to hotel services run by the ferry companies have been a big improvement for getting from a ferry to your hotel or house. I would be interested to see a comparison between public transport on Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi? Do they have taxis there?
-
Remember to factor in the FMP as the Lomphrayah ferry can be fully booked when you get to Surathanee on those few days. Even with the current enforcement of safety regulations I can't imagine the car ferries turning away passengers.

Venetian blinds sounds interesting. Could use a paper punch to make a hole for a chain or string. Have you done this outside? How permanent would a permanent marker be?

Sorry to not have mentioned the songtaews (no tuk tuks here). They do indeed constitute a sort of bus system. Having them change from a (supposed) fixed price in the daytime to more predatory pricing later sort of takes them into the taxi realm, but it is good to have them around, especially for local Samui people. The minibus services are all private, not a public transport except that they obviously work out arrangements to preserve the taxi owners clout while getting some business themselves. It all makes it pretty embarrassing to have guests visiting the island.
SpiderMike, while I am mostly in agreement with your comments here, you also seem to be offering a lot more opinion than facts.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I wouldn't have thought of animals taking them! Pretty sure there are no monkeys, but want to give the squirrels a place to live in peace. I am hoping to get some thin metal that I can engrave/emboss with a pen or simple tool, and be able to keep track of everything for now. Copper foil is probably available but can be fairly toxic to the tree I have heard. Would like to make this work for educational purposes, but that is at least a year or two down the line, so ordering a whole set of engraved tags might be too pricey for now. It would be great to have a real arbortorium style post and engraved sign, but we are still at the small beginnings stage. Really would love a great idea for a fastener that would last a few years without having to maintain or check.

The entire transport system on Samui is completely broken, the mayor does nothing, to improve it, and the government has never cared one iota about that island. No effort has ever been made to develop any sort of public transportation. This new taxi app still sounds quite expensive. But, any alternative to the taxi scoundrel heathens has got to be an improvement.
Yes you keep telling us that, many of us find it not to be the case....
In over a decade here I have seen announcements of changes in the taxi regulations. I am not aware of any improvements with the taxi prices or behavior and have never seen any other public transport other than the motorcycle taxis, and they don't seem to have the usual public visibility here on Samui. What have you seen that leads you to not agree with the post above, Jimmy?

Thought of numbering them, yes. Could link it to a tablet so one could wander around and get a lot of info on each variety. But would also like to have something with Thai and English names and maybe Latin name as well for 'browsing'. Your method would be fast, only real drawback would be if you didn't replace the ties in time and cut into the growing tree. Any thoughts on an easy way to deal with that?

Would like to get a long term answer for labeling/signage for a couple hundred trees of 40 plus varieties. One idea would be some kind of thin metal foil somewhere in thickness between kitchen foil and flashing (what is used in roofing jobs) then you could press letters into it with a scribe or pen. Better if non toxic to plants and weather resistant. Anybody seen a product like this in Thailand? Any other ideas? A place to buy such a product in Chiamg Mai or on line would be great! ??

Thanks Mole, interesting option. The land transport to the airport sounds like it was quite good for you, but I wonder what they would do if there were 15 people - perhaps the dreaded manic minibus ride? In any case, taking the Krabi bypass route is my preferred option.

Power outages..
-
Frequent dropping out of the Internet causes me to toggle between two services. Probably 10 owner outages the last two months, maybe because of the digging for the big water project. Hot water heater only has enough juice to function about half the time, during non peak usage hours. This is on West side.

Traction can help various disc related problems. Physical therapy clinics may have an apparatus that allows you to lie on a table while traction is applied horizontally. Hanging upside down is usually too strenuous for someone with an acute condition, and getting back up to the bar can be quite hard if you are not fit or if your blood pressure is not good. Lying on a slant board is probably the easiest kind of traction to do in a home setting. Head down

Noisy frogs - fish predator?
in Organic Farming, Smallholding and Kitchen Gardening
Posted
Have a small pond , more of a water feature, only about 8 square meters of surface and 25cm deep. Before, it had some pretty big fish that ate every shred of vegetation and everything else except the mosquito eating fish. They succumbed to flooding, and now there are a lot of plants and many small fish. And frogs. The frogs are driving my neighbor crazy, and he came over and removed some (don't the English believe in private property?). Since he is a nice guy, and the frogs are pretty loud, I said he could continue to do that (I don't hear them much, but his bedroom window is 4 meters away). Is there some kind of fish that I could put in there that would eat all the tadpoles and tiny frogs that are left in the pond (hundreds)? The former fish shit so much that the pond needed to be cleaned all the time, so I am thinking to put in only one or two fish and hopefully still have some plants survive. Thanks for any suggestions.
