  1. Thank you very much everyone for your very helpful and informed replies.

My personal computer is 7 years old and I am reluctant to put too much money in to an old machine.smile.png

It is a concern that the ram usage is so high so I may take the pc to the shop and see if they can identify the cause before spending money on ram or new processors etc.

  2. Just need some help please.

My desktop has 2GB. of ram and Windows 7 is using 90% of the ram.

Will I see a significant increase in performance if I upgrade my ram to 4GB?

    Yes.

And how much will the 4GB. cost?

Depends on the type & brand.

    Thank you for your help.

My computer shop has quoted 2900 baht for 2 lots of 2GB which seems high to me.

I will take the pc to them today and talk face to face and see what happens.

  3. My TOT was out from Aug. 03 to Aug. 16, I called TOT numerous times, went to their office twice, finally when I told them my family needed internet for school work, they sent a guy out on Aug. 12, he arrived at 3pm, told me I needed a new antenna for ฿3,800, I argued about why I should pay for it, but there is no competition in my area, so I had no choice. He put up a new antenna and fiddled with it to 9:30PM, and I still had no internet, finally after being assured that they would come back the next day, for 3 days, my niece got it working around 7pm on the sixteenth. I later found out the whole area was without internet, so I don't know if I needed the antenna or not. I'd like to know more about this AIS plan, does True have the same kind of plan?

I am going to the city later this week to buy an Ais sim and a net package for my tablet.

Will bring it back to my home and see if it works and what speeds I am getting.

I may also buy a True sim and net package and compare the two services for speed and reliability.

If this option works at least I have a back up plan when I have my daily outage with TOT.smile.png

  4. Another alternative with TOT is to use the TOT FAULT REPORT web page.

This is sent to the Bangkok Network Operations Center and they make direct phone contact with you. (Techs usually speak a little English, but it's helpful if you can have someone you can hand off the phone to who can translate/speak Thai). The Bangkok tech will sends messages to your local tech if necessary.

Thank you for this information. How do you send this report if your internet is not working?

My beloved rang Bangkok on the weekend about our now daily outages. They said they send a report by email to the local techs. Local techs. do not ring the customer and are extremely tardy in fixing the issue.

Internet off again today and another phone call this time to Tot in our local town. Again reluctant to address the continual outages. They have however promised to send a tech. out to our home tomorrow to ensure our equipment is okay. This is only as we suggested they should offer a full refund and come and collect their equipment from our home.

My feeling is that their equipment is simply not good enough to cope with the high demand and most likely the weather is also playing a part as well.

As for them coming out to see us tomorrow I doubt it will happen.

I know this is Thailand but it would be nice if there was some government body overseeing the internet companies who appear to be promising what they can not deliver.

  5. Ubonjoe, I am optimistic but also realistic. I am not talking about possible changes to the visa rules in the next year or so, but perhaps 20 years in the future, and none of us can know what will happen.

But based on the history of 'retirement' visas, and the general rules regarding issue of visas to foreigners, do you really think it is likely that there will be no changes to the rules, or that the requirements will be eased?

IMHO,, I do not think for 1 second that the visa rules will remain unchanged or will be eased.in the future. The logical assumption is that they will be made stricter, to what degree or how is unknown.

"The logical assumption is that they will be made stricter, to what degree or how is unknown."

Why in your opinion is this a logical assumption?

Do you seriously believe Thailand will make it harder for people to stay and spend money in Thailand?

I am reasonably confident the authorities are wise enough to realise that expats here make a sizeable financial contribution to the economy. Maybe not huge in percentage terms when you think about their economy but still a worthwhile amount.

If I am running a business I would always welcome new customers and their financial contribution to my business. I may not like all of my customers but I sure as hell will not make it harder for them to do business with me.

It appears to me that the current financial requirements are reasonably fair and achievable for most people that choose to live here.

Of course it would be nice if the authorities were to offer say a 2 year extension or even more. That to me would be practical for both the country and the retiree. Less paperwork and less visits to immigration.

Just my opinion of course and only time will tell. I would think that retirees here are not seen as a problem to the country and logically we should be seen as an asset due to our financial contribution.

  6. I am interested in buying a small home theatre system for my room. I do not require a powerful system. Just want to have a reasonable sound when I am watching movies and television shows.

The above system is priced at 7990 on promotion at Power buy. It has 1000 watts.

    http://www.buylah.my/home-theater/333-panasonic-dvd-home-theater-1000w-sc-xh333-51ch.html

Any knowledgeable people there that can advise me if I am on the right track or should I be looking at a different system?

  7.

I know how you feel and am glad to hear you did get your extension. The experience wouldn't have been worthwhile if you weren't first given the opportunity to squirm a little.

Thanks for posting the black ink warning. Hopefully some other TV members will request blue ink signatures from their embassies.

"The experience wouldn't have been worthwhile if you weren't first given the opportunity to squirm a little."

... and the opportunity to share your squirm here.

It does seem a lot of immigrations-related stories now include things like:

    - he looked at me suspiciously,

    - I could tell he really didn't like the color of ink,

    - he kept flipping through the pages in my passport,

    - I almost didn't get the extension,

    - she actually asked me questions !!!

I guess if your life doesn't have much drama, an active imagination will supply suspense and drama to fill in the lulls.

And your point is what? How has your reply assisted others? Are you suggesting I or others are imagining these experiences?

Replies such as yours lend nothing to the board.

More sensible people actually appreciate hearing about other peoples experiences at immigration.

  8. I went to Kap Cheong immigration today to apply for a 1 year extension based on retirement.

I have been through this process 5 times so far. The immigration officer queried whether the statutory declaration re my monthly income from my Australian embassy was a copy. He was not happy that the stat. dec. was signed by my embassy with a black pen!

My better half assured him it was an original document and he was most unimpressed with the signature being with a black instead of a blue pen. At one stage he looked likely to not accept the veracity of the document due to the signature being done with the black pen.

Has anyone else had this issue with a stat. dec. from their embassy or was I just unlucky this time? I cannot remember if the embassy used a black or blue pen on previous occassions.

Good news is that I obtained my yearly extension but for a while it seemed that I may not. In which case I would have had to travel to Bangkok again to my embassy to redo the stat. dec!

Any helpful and informed replies are most welcome.

  9. I recall when my late father was trialing different BP meds, there was one that seemed to work but also gave him spontaneous boners. He was most embarrassed the first time it happened at a supermarket check out when he normally would go ahead of mum to bag the stuff but insisted that he stay right behind her in the check out line with mum asking, "What's wrong? Why are you poking me?"

But that doesn't help the OP. I would maybe try another medication since anything that modifies BP has an effect on your woody (which works due to blood pressure control). Just because most people experience the same as my dad, I wouldn't think it too much of stretch for some people to be affected otherwise. I think it took my dad about 4 different trials to find the one that did the job without any sort of side (or sticking right out in front) effects.

And do you remember the name of your fathers BP medication?

I would like to try itsmile.png

  10. I'm flabbergasted with you.

So, you saw the ants in, and you are still have the fridge on?

Do you understand, you are torturing, these lovely creatures.

I'm contemplating to report you to the WWF.

    World wrestling federation?

  11. They've dealt w/ far too many farang idiots and time-wasters already and rightly assume the worst. Get used to it. Of course, the management of the establishment can make a critical difference.

Now, it's a fun challenge to speak some Thai, joke around a bit, and turn around the whole perception--ending w/ a nice experience and favorable impression for both parties.

Pattaya is just a small part of Thailand.

Odd attitude that a customer has to get used to bad service from sales staff. I was always told rule 1 customer is always right, rule 2 see rule 1

Service in Isaan is very hit or miss. I find the service at Big C and 7/11 here very good. Local copy shop ladies always have a smile and a laugh with the customers. Thai coffee shops and restaurants service is very good.

The service at some Farang establishments is very hit and miss. Staff have a surly attitude, do not understand simple English and when spoken to in Thai also do not understand.

On the other hand when there is good management(and managers/owners are actually on the premises) service levels are quite good. Staff then get more tips as well.

It gets back to lack of training by management and also getting good staff who actually value their jobs.

Plenty of choice here as to where to eat, drink and obtain required services. When service levels are poor in one shop easy to find another where service is much better.

  12. Anyone interested and excited about this phone which by all accounts will be released in September this year?

I am looking to upgrade from my Iphone 3gs(around 4.5 years old) and want a really good smartphone with good specs.

    http://www.androidorigin.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4-specs-rumors-roundup/

This phone looks like it will be my next piece of technology to play with. I already have a Samsung galaxy 10.1 tablet and it is great.

  13. Are you all nuts guys????? As long as we do not pay any taxes to Thailand like thai citizensmostly are... We have no right in asking for the same price.... To buld a museum costs money,, and you and me we have NOT contributed at all to that!!

So one price for thai - and one price for falang is fair..... But most of you seems to look for something else than fair I guess.. It is mostly me me me me...

    Glegolo

You are of course 100 per cent wrong!smile.png

Different pricing is racist pure and simple. As for our contribution to Thai society we as foreigners in this country contribute millions of baht to the Thai economy. That's right. Millions as some build houses, others rent and we all shop.

Let us also not forget border runs, Visas etc.

  14. Looking to update from my existing 5 year phone.

I have a Samsung tablet and love it.

So looking at buying either a Samsung S5 or a Note 3.

I am an avid note taker (as I have a poor memory) and love to take pictures daytime and nigh time when out and about.

Also love to listen to music often during the day and at night. So would like a good and preferably loud sound from the phone.

Given this criteria can any board members that have either or both of these handsets please give me their opinions please.

I have read many online reviews but am looking for personal trustworty experience now.

And current pricing in Thailand for these units would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  15. That sux. Something was better than nothing. They're isolating the Aussie more and more, here in Thailand.

Not really, you can listen to any radio station in Australia on the net including the ABC,

IMHO. the ABC is way past it's usefulness date in this day and age and defiantly doesn't

justify budget of 10's of millions of dollars for bygone broadcast technology any longer...

So where do we watch the Australia news and watch the Australian rules football once the Australia network closes?

Listening to the news and the footy is simply not as good as watching it.

  16. Any decent entertainment for falang in Roiet?

Its quieter than Surin but still good. As mentioned above Petcharat Gardens is near a few places inc 100 Club which is like a Tawan Deang nightclub. There are some good farang

    eateries scattered around too.

Thanks for the information. I might pop up there for a couple of nights very soon.,
