  1. I am not at all sure it works that way here. Usually when you purchase roofing material they will provide installation, at least that is what happened when we built our house.

If you are lucky there may be several people on the team who have done the work before. The supervisor may have some training but most of the workers are farmers who freelance as day laborers making extra money from their manual labor.

Professional tradesmen who work as a team and specialize in a specific aspect of construction and do nothing else, I would guess are very rare here. I would also guess, they would gravitate to higher paying locations, where they could find a steady supply of work and make more money.

As VF says, we bought the roof and it included the labor, turnkey. If you want it piecemeal ,I would talk to your contractor or the supplier of the CPAC.

  2. Has anyone seen anyone selling or building what I call a porch swing. We already have the hooks built into the house but can not find anything close. Everything that I find that is adaptable is very bulky and damn uncomfortable

  3. You told me in a weak moment, believe it or not. Seminar signup?

Truly a moment of madness on my part and I do not remember.laugh.png How goes your effort to straddle the fence and maintain relations with both me and the most ardent member of the VF hate club?wink.png
I do not see it as an issue.

Do you know that after the years that I have known you and read your posts, blog and facebook page I'm still unaware of your family name?
Not that I have ever gone out of my way to find it out but I do know that of many of the other members through various sources, mainly facebook or having it incorporated into their email address.

Whats in a name, anyway?thumbsup.gifbiggrin.png Name, address and date of birth I keep quite close, so the fact someone who has known me as long as you have, doesnt have all that is good news in my opinion.

Recently I was interviewed for an article to be published in an international publication. The girl asked for a name other than VF on a couple of occasions. I explained that I am not searchable under my real name but I am under VF, so in the interest of continuity I would much prefer VF. I couldnt see any upside in linking my real name to VF. Besides, by now I am probably more VF, than that other guy.

She finally gave in, saying she understood but her boss wanted it, so she had to ask. I am still waiting to see the final result.wink.png

    I know it but I ain't telling.

I guess that’s what happens when wives get together, all mystique goes out the window.rolleyes.gif

  6. Back at home in CR. That 34 hour door to door trip wasted me. Busy putting house back in shape. Humidity is a big change and slowing me down.

  7. What the hell is wrong with a "Chiangrai Resident" telling us a little story about his experiance in Laos,Indonesia or where ever. The world doesnt revolve around Chiangrai Provence. Come on!!!

For you Gary, I wrote most of this a couple of years back so I hope the formatting behaves.

A few years back I met a Lao girl and set her up in a small flat in Vientiane.

It was handy for the city, about a mile past the Morning Market, an enjoyable walk during the day and an easy tuktuk ride home at night.

One night I went out alone for a few drinks; my girlfriend had gone to Thailand to see her mother and her sister was installed to cook and make sure that I behaved myself.

The couple of hours that I had allowed myself stretched to long after midnight before I flagged a tuktuk, drunkenly negotiated four times the normal fare and headed home. As we turned into the street I saw a crowd of people near the flats and closer inspection revealed an Army unit, a couple of officers, a few policeman looking like curious onlookers and two civilians with automatic weapons.

I hate civilians with automatic weapons.

Pulling the three wheeled taxi up well short of them I paid him off and slinking as quietly and unobtrusively as a nearly two metre, hundred kilogram white man can in Asia headed past the group of warriors to my lane way.

One of the officer’s eyes lit up; smiling broadly he said “are you (my first name)?”

I confessed I was. “Come with me he said” dismissing the Army and Police Force he and the other officer lead the way into nearby vacant land with the heavily armed civilians bringing up the rear. As we approached and entered a stand of trees the thought suddenly occurred to me with utter certainty that they were going to shoot me. I felt not even a twinge of fear, only expectation and almost turned around to see if someone had brought a spade but then we were through the trees and saw the lights of buildings ahead.

They wasted no time presenting me to another officer who looked at me and asked what I was doing in Vientiane.

I had a flat I said and lived quietly and was on good terms with the neighbours.

He knew that but I only had a tourist visa why didn’t I get a business visa?

I nearly said because you lock people up with business visas with but no business, but merely said I wasn’t eligible.

How about a work permit? Same again.

“Well you’re not living out here on a tourist visa”, he said, “get back to the tourist area with the other tourists”.

There was a misunderstanding I said, all the criteria had been met and the Nie Barn had agreed to my residency.

“I’m the Nie Barn” said the arresting officer who had addressed me by name….and he was saluting the guy behind the desk? That made him at least a Lao general. To the uninitiated a Nie Barn is the head of a local government area known as a village. Villages can be quite a large part of a city also and the Nie Barn rules. He is mayor, Supreme Court judge, militia commander and lord high executioner. I found out years later that my girl friend had declined a deal to let me live there that included her sharing his bed a couple of afternoons a week.

The now friendly gunmen lead me back to the flat, accepted a bottle of Mekong Whiskey as a mark of my friendship and I went in to the terrified sister.

    MORE!

  8. I think some people over react to people on here WISHING things were different or better. Nothing wrong with that as I see it. I have a number of things I have on that list but it does not mean I am not quite content with the overall situation. Quite different from complaining or whining. I think writing it in a forum amplifies the meaning somewhat. Not that there are not a few sourpusses on here occasionally.

  9. I am curious. I spent a lot of extra money on installing a Cool Roof System on my house. The maximum temp in the non ac part of the house has been 31 C. Relative to other people, does it seem like it is making a big difference? FYI, I do not open windows except in bathroom

  10. Lots of good dentists here. I use Dr Cheewan at Sriburin Hospital. The is a lady there who is also supposed to be good. Cheewan has a clinic on an Khong Noi as well. Not the cheapest but I don't worry about that. I have seen others recommended as well.

  11. Also I get the feeling that there is no one on here that uses this forum as they're primary means to find out about attending the Pot Luck. I am assuming they are on the email list or the other forum. Am I incorrect?

Heading for the US soon so maybe a moot point.
