I have always wanted to live in Thailand but have been put off by the idea of teaching and quite low pay. I curently live in Taiwan an although i started out teaching 3 years ago, I now work as a Chinese to English translator and magazine editor. I have also authored a couple of ESL books.

Anyway, after having a Thai friend visit last week and giving her the tour- I found myself thinking that Thailand is simply so much better than Taiwan (from a personal perspective) and why on earth am I not living there? So, I've decided to move over in a few months. I want to avoid teaching if possible as I feel that it would be a step back for me after achieving so much here in Taiwan- I can continue translation work over the net which could pay the rent and some of my living expenses, but I would need to find something a bit more stable after a few months.

In addition to basic setting- myself- up- in- thailand costs, I can muster about 500,000 to be invested in some way. Wjhat can I do with it? Better still, what would YOU do with it. Sure I could sit around and doss on it for a year but I would like to make a foray into self employment/ own business of some kind. I guess many of you will laugh- "Half a million is ###### all." I hear you cry. But this is the best I can do for the moment.

How would you invest half a mil Baht?

How many millions is a good money in Los generaly speaking?

Be prepared to wait a few weeks. The Immigration Officer will write to your local Police, who will visit your address, interview neighbours and certify you live where you say you live. When that is done, you receive a letter of residence which enables you to open accounts in your own name (without work permit) and, as in my case, to get a Thai driving licence as well.

,much larger, on site w/view from inside & outside, good location, large

members, great athomspher. I have been doing drug free Pro bodybuilding

They told me 2400Bhat monthly subscription, I know prices

are not fixed for foreigners, and they try to overcharge if

you don't bargain.

Sukhumvit Branch: Newly opened at Jasmine tower, next to soi cowboy,

But looks much smaller than Silom branch.

i am sure bangkok alone would have out numbered all distinations.

Or maybe not much visitor to other places compare to Bkk

My guess is, since majority expats (80%) in Los are around age 25-45,

prefer to live in Bkk, for Job reasons and more female partner choice,

and more things to do.

And other 20% older or retired generation prefer Island or smaller

city like enviroments for healtier living. Question is, are there many

young expats choose to live in these places and do they out number

older folks?

I don't agree with you completely, because hookers in western

countries aren't in same situation as are BGs in Los.

In west, they can go work in a grocery and make $1000, and they

don't need to feed whole family. There isn't wellfare system in Los.

Do you even consider that most Bgs think working in a bar in

the only way to find a Husband, because thai men usually won't

bother to support these type of women, considering Isaan man

hardly can support themselves?

I have two advice and nothing left out from my side:

-If you want to live in thailand, you have to little think, re-act, eat,...

like a thai, you can't bring your values with you here, because they

don't really match, and you will have tough time understanding and

fitting into thai culture.

-Learn thai, even you don't need it financialy, because you feel more

at home, easier to deal with thais or at least you will be more accepted

among thais

Under regulations imposed last year because of serious problems with bad debts and out of control consumer credit the Thai government requires banks to verify that an applicant is in employment (and if a Thai earns at leat 15000THB per month) which means a foreign applicant MUST have a work permit.

No resrictions on debit cards of course.

Cold-Ko1. If you are prepared to "block" funds against your credit limit why on earth not get a Be1st visa debit card? Agreed there are some places which cannot accept Visa Electron but then cash is a useful substitute for plastic.

against what my credit card limit is, still they didn't accept.

Ask them why since there were no risk involved. and reply was because

Thai people aren't poor for no reason. But still most intersting people.
