  1. There was a girl at my girlfriend's work who changed her name. Two months later she married a farang.

Within a few months three or four girls changed their names in the hope of meeting a farang. That was two years ago. Nothing has happened yet.

Oh I didn't mention that the first girl had known the farang for two years and was already engaged BEFORE she changed her name.

Another girl I know has just changed her telephone number. The monk told her it was an unlucky number. She now hopes her life will change (but does nothing to change it).

    Right. That'll work.

    Good luck.

    Alcohol consumption in Thailand

"Thailand is the top alcohol-consuming country in ASEAN with 40 percent of drinkers found in North-East region." wai2.gif wai.gif giggle.gif

"According to the latest alcohol consumption data collected by World Health Organization,

Thailand is ranked 1st among ASEAN countries in alcohol consumption, followed closely by Laos and the Philippines."

    That report is from 2014

  3. I'm no "Engineering expert", nor do i know anything about electrical engineering, but common sense tells me:

If the transformer in the charger gets fried or is not assembled properly, the 220v coming from the socket can then travel through the cord into the phone causing a surge.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Yes you are wrong. The charger you get with a phone gives a 5VDC output. The incomer to the charger is mains voltage but not on the output.

    I think he is right.

He said if the transformer got fried. In that case there would be nothing to stop the 220V.

  4. biggrin.png thank you guys for taking part on this, i think we can safely assume that corruption and cheats exist because the majority of people not only accept them, but in fact actively support those practices.

It's old news anyways, we know that what is rotten into our society doesn't just sprout out after the first seasonal's rainfalls, just have a taught about this next time you end up into an unpleasant situation, we will never root out bad practices till we are ourselves an active part against it, no matter how small something might looks, that's also why we start being educated while we are still at a very early stage of our life, but i bet this will be an overly complicated reasoning to understand for many...

What about the big well known companies that sneakingly downsize their products and try to make the containers look the same size. Here is an eye opener:

    https://consumerist.com/category/grocery-shrink-ray/

The time when cans of soda were on average 330m then shrunk down to 325m over night. Mars bars that at one time were huge, a Mars a day helps you work, rest and play was their ad, now they are bite sized. We are getting ripped off by these traders and big companies everyday. So what you are complaining about is insignificant in the scheme of things.

    I agree with you entirely.

The OP complained about a little scam and he received many aggressive replies. The thing is. He is entirely correct.

It is happening everywhere now. Restaurants and shops are saving where they can. Serviettes no longer supplied in many restaurants. Portions much much smaller. As someone else mentioned, soft drinks (and Heineken Beer) are now supplied in smaller cans. At first they cost the same as the older bigger cans but now the price has gone up.

Too be honest, with many of these products (especially beer) I would prefer to pay more for a bigger portion.

  5. Like everything else in Thailand, it depends on the luck of the draw.

My friend and I went to renew our licenses on the same day but at 2 different offices. I will tell you where. Mine was at at On Nut (Bang Na) and my friend went to Mor Chit.

I had to go through the whole procedure once again of taking the test and watching the 30 minute video. It took about 4 hours.

My friend was in and out in less than one hour.

    This is Thailand!

  6. I never tried an audio book but sounds like something to do one day

    .

Oh you must try audiobooks. A good narrator can really add to the story with dramatic reading, or having the author themself read the book to you adds another dimension.

    Sounds interesting.

Do you recommend any good websites for audio books?

There are a few good pay/subscription services, such as Audible.com (owned by Amazon), iTunes, etc but these cost. These services generally have their own apps.

There are hundreds of free Audiobook sites (such as librivox.org, audiobooks.org, allyoucanbooks.com) but these are usually limited to public domain books. Just do a Google search and assess options. Of course bittorrent is an enormous source of audio books if your conscious allows.

Audio books are simply mp3 or m4a audio files, so can be played via any media software, but iTunes/GooglePlaystore have many audio book specific apps, some of these have in-built links to public domain sources.

I don't mind paying for quality books.

    Thanks for the info

  8. Charge is 40 baht per month where I live. We pay but many don't and just throw their garbage over the back wall of the village.

When they first started charging, collection was almost everyday, which over time became once a week if lucky, and anyone's guess as to which day of the week they would come by. Now it's mostly the same day of the week which is acceptable.

You must live in the same place as us, except that collection hasn't improved.

We never know when they are coming. I've known them come 2 days in a row and sometimes 10 days in between.

My Thai neighbours don't seem to care that dogs ravage their plastic bags and rats run around scavaging for food.

  9. I don't think the Thai ex-pat situation is unduly affected.....(yes you will get 5 Baht less for your pound---until the dust settles)

But look at Britain's largest ex-pats population, Spain.......so many 1,000s of houses & villas have been brought there over the years. I wonder if the situation will affect that..................................coffee1.gif

You are dead right there. Let me give some examples as to why as an English expat in Thailand remain or brexit makes no difference to me:

If I return to England not entitled to NHS treatment until I have stayed there for 6 months (no change there)

When I receive my State pension if living in Thailand, it will be frozen forever from the day I receive it although I have paid my full NI stamp contributions (no change there)

Not entitled to open an onshore bank account in England that pays interest because I’m a non-resident, treated like a foreigner although I have not officially emigrated to become a citizen of another country. The offshore accounts all pay less interest than the onshore accounts, so I can’t benefit from any good deals if the onshore banks have them on offer (no change there)

Not entitled to any UK social security benefits if I ever need them while living in Thailand although I have paid into the system all my working life, never been unemployed or claimed benefits (no change there)

As a resident in Thailand I am entitled to nothing, must totally 100% pay my own way, can’t pay, can’t stay, yet have absolutely no support from my own country`s system I have paid into for most of my life because I am considered a non resident there although I am a true blue British citizen (no change there)

While living in Thailand I am not using the UK NHS service or claiming any UK benefits or allowances, yet I am still taxed on my UK company pension and pitence savings interest, receiving virtually no interest on my offshore savings and my State pension will be frozen, it’s as if I am locked into a no man’s land, almost like being Stateless, almost a foreigner in the UK and a foreigner in Thailand, entitled to nothing yet still paying my way for services I am no longer entitled to receive (no change there)

In fact I would be better off and entitled to more if I were a Syrian refugee illegally entering Britain and claiming political asylum. And why I did not bother to vote in this EU referendum.

I am in exactly the same position as you.

Maybe we should apply for Syrian citizenship.

  10. In all the years I, along with my wife and 3 kids, traveling to places we wanted to see, we never once let the value of the pound worry us. Our first trip to the USA the $ was exchanging at over $1.60 to the £. We went again the next year and it was down to around $1.40, but we still went.

I don't know anyone who lets the exchange rate worry them.

There are many that think about. You are lucky you are well paid.

I know of factory workers in England that save every penny for their yearly summer holiday and make a strict budget about how much they can spend. Ask them to go out and eat at a nice restaurant and they will say they can't afford it.

I teach Tourism at a university and often the students interview tourists from the whole of Europe. It isn't so unusual to hear that they are on a tight budget.

A 20% drop in the value of the pound and uncertainty of the entire economic situation will certainly put many off of their summer holidays.

  11. Not sure what the rate is now, but at one point yesterday I was set for an equivalent drop of over 35,000thb per month in my monthly salary,, paid in UK pounds but more than 95% of my spending is done in thailand,, so for sure it will have an impact

I assume you live and work here so you are NOT a tourist even though you get paid in British pounds.

If I lost 35,000 Baht a month I couldn't survive, but then again I get paid in Thai Baht and with the drop in the value of the pound it makes it cheaper for me to go to England.

The topic is "Thailand tourism faces uncertainty over Brexit fallout" and without doubt it will hit tourism from Europe. The Chinese , however will still come in huge numbers and TAT will boast of higher tourist arrivals.

  12. Why would Thailand tourism face uncertainty over the Brexit 'fallout'. It will not make one bit of difference. Not one British tourist will say 'Oh we can't go to Thailand this year because we have left the EU'. Not one German tourist will say 'oh we can't go to Thailand this year because the UK left the EU'.

The graph shown above is disingenuous as the end of day trading was back up significantly. The freefall at the start of the market was caused by wan*er traders selling off like crazy only to buy back when prices hit 8-9% lower than they were, it was a set-up.

The British pound ended 9% down yesterday (at one point fell 10%).

It is expected to fall more over the coming weeks.

I think many tourists that come here from UK are on a tight budget. The fall in the value of the pound, increasing costs, higher taxes (predicted) will certainly make some of them consider their "dream holiday in Thailand".

It may not be so many , but it certainly will be felt.
