  1. Never heard of the sauce spray before, sounds effective. I have found a large ground white pepper ‘herb’ jar slips in the pocket easily and also effective. The advantage of the water pistol filled with sauce is you can keep more of a distance.

I also found the white pepper is great at marking my boundary. Dogs sniff it and go away, cats just don’t like it on their paws. Keeps my garden intruder free.

  2. The 1962 majority ruling of the ICJ was quite clear. The ownership of the temple was queried and it was given to Cambodia. Thailand withdrew from the temple.

"Thailand is under obligation to withdraw any troops in the area around the temple," the Cambodian representative said. That just isn't true.

Cambodia is under obligation to withdraw any troops from the temple. That is true.

Many posters seem to be saying it just isn't sensible for Cambodia to own the temple and Thailand to have sovereignty over the surrounding land. That is true.

The ruling was not sensible, that is why we have this problem. The ruling was based on a legal technicality that IMHO should not have been applied. This is the opinion stated by the minority of judges.

The treaty made between Siam and France (representing Cambodia) was clear, it did not refer to or rely on any map. It placed the temple and surrounding land in Thailand. The map is erroneous according to expert witness at the ICJ. The court accepted that. The map was prepared later. The map was intended to be illustrative; it was not intended to have any power to change the treaty.

In 1962, Thailand should have appealed the ruling ( I don't know how). The ICJ ruling does not need clarifying it needs changing.

No new ruling will stop any howitzers firing only Politicians and obedient armies can do that; Or a strong third party.

  3. You people are just getting too metro for me. Toe trimming, whew. The other day there was a long touchy feely posting I don't recall the nature of, but one paragraph and I was gone and now this. Some people have just too much time on their hands and in touch with their egos.

Hey! Talking about it ruins it!! True of this thread too.

I have had the same nail trouble with my wife – she trimmed my nails and I couldn’t walk for some days. Her way of keeping me at home. So I trimmed my own nails. You know what? I couldn’t walk for a week. Talk about self harming!

Is there no compromise between men’s straight and woman’s curves? (I don’t mean Ladyboys) This world is not black or white. Usually some grey is the answer. Grey hours are livened by TV lunacy – and before I get grey painted – only a few of my hours are grey. Less now.

Accidental depilation when lighting one’s farts?

Haven’t had that fun for years. Didn’t know it was common here in LOS. I must report that I didn’t need depilation when I last practiced. Do now though, I understood the talk about getting lost in the garden.

  4. Why are some posters trying to show that the conflict is all the fault of the Arabs? They forget the historical context. Suggesting, just stop throwing the rockets and all will sort itself out.

The prime mover of the establishment of a modern Israel in Palestine was the British declaration of 1917. This was later backed by the League of Nations mandate. The inclusion of the Clause:

“the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing should be done which might prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine”

has been conveniently forgotten and flouted by Israel as it continues to ignore many UN resolutions today.

The Gaza strip is one of the most densely populated areas in the world with about 4,000 /sq Kilometre. I know only of Monaco, Gibraltar and Singapore that are more crowded. Why is it so crowded? Because it is two thirds refugees. Over 4M refugees live in Gaza, West bank, Jordan, Syria or Lebanon. These refugees are the people displaced by the Israeli forces in 1948 and 1967 and their descendants.

The refugees in Gaza throw a few hundred homemade rockets and the IDF pound Gaza with the latest Aircraft and Tanks. That cannot be equal. It is clearly against international law.

Why do the Jews think that they have a god given right to hound almost all the non-Jewish inhabitants of Judah into Gaza and lay siege to them?

  6. Yes, there is some speculation in the TV posts – but not a lot at this time.

It is a fact that this level of investigation is reduced in effectiveness by being late.

It is a fact that the Hotel and local Police dismissed several deaths within a brief space of time and location as coincidence and suggested unlikely causes without much evidence.

It is speculation but highly likely, that this extra assistance of international toxicology experts was prompted by an investigative television program. It should not have needed that.

The best speculation is that the deaths have stopped. Let us hope so. But problems that go away by themselves can come back by themselves.

  7. One of the funniest thing in this story is that, according to all maps of the "disputed area" I've seen, there is an area that neither Thailand nor Cambodia claims as theirs.

    See, here, on the right?

    Preahmap.jpg

How anyone can suggest that the temple is in Cambodia and the surrounding land is not – is beyond my imagination. The ICJ was clearly wrong in its majority decision.

As far as I understand. ICJ was asked the question "Is the temple on Cambodian side?". Their answer was "yes" considering that according to the map drawn by the French and agreed on by Thailand was placing the temple in Cambodian side indeed. They were not asked about surrounding area and therefore did not mention anything about it, but if you follow their reasoning, then this area would still be in Cambodia too.

The whole dispute boils down to a simple point. The border was supposed to follow the watershed line (which is geographically logical) but the French decided not to follow this rule in this particular area. This is tricky but they did not hide anything as they provided the accurate map with this border to Thailand who agreed on it.

So from a Geographical point of view, it makes sense that the area is on Thai side.... but from a legal point of view, it is in Cambodia, as all involved parties agreed on that at the beginning.

Unfortunately, You are right about what the ICJ was asked and therefore what it pronounced on – just the temple. My guess is that the current Clarification will say that Thailand should quit the area.

However, the map is being given too much status. What ‘everybody agreed on’ was the treaty, not the map. The map came later. But Siam did not comment on it. It had not the technical expertise or survey information. More important Siam was scared, they would not challenge France! The map anyway was probably not considered important; the treaty held sway and the map was (left without valid examination) expected to be in line with the treaty.

The ICJ minority opinion gets it right IMHO – the court should not have applied modern legal thinking to international relations at that time. The ICJ’s decision was based on the principle if you don’t object you agree by default. But even that is questionable, since it assumes that the map had the power to overrule the treaty. That was not intended by the French and anyway, it was agreed by the court to be a muddle of a plot and inaccurate.

The watershed line as defined in the treaty clearly puts the Temple in Thailand. I don’t know how one appeals the ICJ, if you can, that is what Thailand should have done in 1962.

  8. How anyone can suggest that the temple and surrounding land is in Cambodia I do not understand – just go and look. (well just now it’s too dangerous). The French intention was that the escarpment defined the border. Any rational person would agree.

How anyone can suggest that the temple is in Cambodia and the surrounding land is not – is beyond my imagination. The ICJ was clearly wrong in its majority decision. They agreed that the contemporary map was in error, but did not then draw sensible conclusions. The treaty is clear.

  9. The list of family members at the campaign event in Chiang Mai really shows that merit is not being used to discriminate in the Pheu Thai party. This family affair does not deserve to get any votes. Unfortunately it is likely to get quite a few.

Mark is a good candidate it seems, I hope he does well. He needs to clear out his party of its corruption and military links. Can he do that and survive?

It is going to take a long time to improve Thai politics; I guess I will not live to see it.

  10. The checks are more stringent than I have seen before. I have had some Savings Certificates (earlier issues obviously) repaid to my address in Thailand without problems.

The current rate of 2.25% or 0.5% + inflation is actually lower than has been previously offered. They are clearly useful if you want to keep a hold on UK inflation. The rate of inflation in Thailand alongside the UK rate is what you need to think about and that for five years – quite difficult. The current rate in the UK is exceptional. To think of the return in one year, when you can’t touch it, is misleading.

  11. The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia seems to break every one of the FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES of ASEAN, except perhaps one - number three.

All the rest have been trampled on -

    1. Mutual respect for territorial integrity

    2. Right to national existence free from external interference

    3. No interference in the internal affairs of one another

    4. Settlement of differences by peaceful manner

    5. Renunciation of the use of force

    6. Effective cooperation

So is ASEAN anything at all? If members flout fundamental principles?

Clearly, the whole thing is a game – ASEAN included. All the players have different aims in their hidden agendas. Unfortunately, the armies’ weapons and ammunition are fatally real for the troops and population.

  12. ^ No dangers at all?

I see two possible scenario's for the outcome of the election.

scenario 1 :Democrats will win majority and Thaksin will claim the results are bogus > Red shirts will start demonstrations again with possible result a civil war.

scenario 2 : PTP together with a few other nominee party's will create a majority. The EC will,on the advice from higher up,dissolve PTP because Thaksin is involved > Red shirts will start demonstrations again with possible result a civil war.

    You forgot the coup option

  13. Just A Typical Thai Day and response and tragedy in Thailand

This countries biggest embarrassment and weakness is lack of education

Ofcourse, Ingnorance, Arrogance, Egotistical Face, Laziness, Narrow mindedness, and the mai pen rai (i don't care with a smile)

All of the symptoms also due to a lack of education...

But for any teacher who knows what the schools are like here... you cannot teach a fish how to fly....

Why are you at a forum about Thailand.

Every tribe needs a misionary !!

  14. The Israeli forces can do anything to Gaza and nobody breaths a word.

Can you say rockets, suicide bombers and a terrorist organization called Hamas? As long as the Palestinians refuse any peace deal and keep up the provocations, they will not get their homeland.

A few homemade rockets from Gaza do not compare with the IDF assault that Israel used to retaliate.

One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter. Hamas is certainly not just a terrorist organisation. It just does not balk at meeting force with force. It is no justification for a blockade of Gaza that has turned Gaza into a ghetto similar to that which the Jews like to remind us should never happen again. I wish they spoke the truth.

You are correct; Israel has taken their homeland. I think that does justify all the actions taken by indigenous Palestinians that I have seen.

    Sorry for the slow reply.

  15. SAffer ... don't tell me ... you hauled ass before the "Swart Gevaar" can take over everything right?

Nelson Mandela was jailed for treason, not for violent activity. And the armed struggle started when he was in prison; there were others who led the ANC at the time and campaigned for an armed struggle. Or are you saying the burning of dom passe is violence?

Amazing the <deleted> people spout on an open forum.

Next you'll be telling us how your Thai GF there has five degrees and comes from a rich family, and you're the first farang she's even spoken to. Does her family have a trilingual gardener too?

Ghandi ran the brits out of India with nonviolence. MLK changed America for the better with nonviolence. Those are two examples of success at changing the world through nonviolence. I have a much harder task of finding where violence ever produced sustainable change for the better.

An eye for and eye leaves everyone blind - Ghandi

Nelson Mandela, however, did use violence.

"a trilingual gardener" of course - Thai, English and Latin plant names, such guys are very common. Usually, they are head cook too, so also have a smattering of French.

  16. He wasn't dead when the first sample taken and DNA test was done.

He wasn't dead when the second... DNA tests were done.

Which showed that some targets were not him.

    That one target was him.

He was alive and living comfortably in one place,

    and rarely moving around

That made precision planning and execution quite possible.

Burial at sea is the best public story, and is probably true.

For sure, photos and tissue samples were taken.

He is dead when the latest DNA test is done.

Evidence can be released at the best moment

    Why keep the body?

Seems quite believable to me, when all aspects are considered.

If not completely true the truth will out

    Remember Jessica Lynch, Pat Tillman...?

    Eliminating that face was necessary

    For USA credibility

As retribution - there is no hiding place

    However, al-Qaeda still lives

Similar to a virus it lives on in all the other cells

  17. WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea.

After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.

The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred.

    <deleted> ? !

The perfect excuse!! Just what are they hiding? I don’t understand.

  18. Emasculating al-Qaeda will take more than removing their current leader, even if regarded as founder.

He was not indispensable - as no one is. Every human organisation has as its main effort, survival. Al-Qaeda will be no different. They will have more recruits tomorrow than yesterday. Every single affiliate will feel he needs to make extra effort – certainly not give up. Most of them will not believe he has been killed – why is his body lost? Al-Qaeda is stronger because of this action, not weaker. Partly because it was and continues to be, this kind of arrogance of the USA (and allies) that justifies (in thier eyes) al-Qaeda’s actions.

The IRA did not disappear when Eire, Britain, NI politicians and IRA leaders agreed to ‘end the fighting’. The IRA have split up, modified their name and continued! Even though they are slowly seeing most of their aims realised. So what are they fighting for? Even though fewer in NI are in agreement and even fewer are giving support. So where is their popular base? Yet they are still operational and killing.

Al-Qaeda sees now only increased reason to attack Americans etc and remove the scourge of Christian crusades from the world. Al-Qaeda therefore will not collapse, but draw breath and come back stronger. The Muslim majority see the Christian ‘west’ as arrogant, self serving, anti Islamic and corrupt. This view has been now reinforced. Only some Muslims are prepared to ‘go to war’ but more than yesterday.

To the suggestion that Nazism died with Hitler; that is not factual. It has not died. Most of Germany was devastated, and the political structure carefully cleansed – not just Hitler removed. But even that, only made Nazism inconsequential it has not gone away.

To the coming critics of my views – my views above, are what I consider will be the reaction to Osama’s death. I do not agree with al-Qaeda’s actions in any way – or agree with the USA taking the law into its own hands, although I most certainly sympathise. International terrorists should be shown to be evil and the open trial concluded in a civil manner – to not do that, makes it easier for terrorists to twist the truth and recruit more terrorists.

  19. Had the same problem for 2 days but strangely if I try through Outlook Express,I can access my Yahoo accounts

I see the short form again this morning. I’ve been locked out all yesterday evening and now.

    (Intermittently during three days.)

Should we be doubting the cause? It seems a long time for Yahoo to limit access. The URL displayed by IE seems authentic... but?
