Being a pedant I would say that:

    • a more accurate translation of meuang is probably "municipality" or town/city, rather than any marker of geographical characteristic
    • there are three reservoirs (not lakes) of substance in Meuang Ubon - Huai Wang Nong, Huai Meuang and Huai Nong Bua

But we all know what you mean! Most falang talk about Huai Wang Nong as being 'the lake' and indeed it is home to some des res and is mostly quiet, so Trans Am is a lucky guy if he lives around there. Also home to a falang bar/restaurant, a lot of popular evening/weekend Thai restaurants and the inevitable few 'fairy light' establishments.

Ubon hash has hashed nearly every inch of the place over its 9 year history - I could navigate it blindfold!

Just to split hairs, "muang" would quite possibly be translated as town also centre. One could argue that "Nakorn" could be translated as town. Definitely not city. That is "mahanakhon". Only one true city in Thailand and that is Bangkok.

a thai can do every work, this is not a reason for not getting a work permitt

Wrong. There is a list, issued by the Labour department, that stipulates jobs that cannot be done br foreigners because they can be done by Thais.

In order not to generalise so much, maybe this thread could be renamed "what does YOUR Issan woman really like?"

ain't there a town in the UK called Pea's Pottage (Sussex)? a pottage made of peas...hmm, probably good with some nice crusty bread...

my sister ain't worth a shit in the kitchen either...she gets her husband who's my best friend and who I showed how to cook to do it all...

once I made a fabulous avocado salad (greens, parmesan and olive oil) that she devoured...and then she glowered...and then picked up a knife and came at me screaming: 'yew always thought that yer were better than me, ye bastard!!!'

    sibling rancor and perilous times...

    Pease Pottage.

Went to the local village market today/night. I saw a farang and as I normally do said hello. Even though the guy seemed reluctant to acknowledge my 'hello' it wasn't a problem. It seems to be the way all farang act when arriving here.

Later I spoke with the missus telling her I'd saw and spoke with a farang. She replied 'he's a Swede and won't be here much longer'. 'Why not' I asked. Cuz he's on heart meds and doesn't boom boom any more.'

What you see and what your missus knows are 2 different things. You have to be in the know 100% before making your assumption Puchooay.

My missus doesn't need know any different or tell me anything. I find out by myself. You see, I don't live in a fenced and gated complex like some. I walk around the village every morning for exercise. I speak to the villagers I meet, although they normally speak to me first. I sit in the village shop and often someone will come and sit with me for a chat.  I speak their language, both of them, and the villagers respect me for that. That is how I know who is who and who does what.

I sincerely hope your right, but it's a little hard to know what your (anyone's) neighbours are doing 24/7, isn't it.

Plus, do you really want to know ?

Couldn't give a rats arse to be honest. But, living in a small village it is easy to see what is going on. Not difficult to know who is who and who does what.

You must be walking around with your eyes shut. I'd find it hard to find a Thai lady whose husband/boyfriend, who works rotation shifts, that isn't screwing around where I live. I'd say your you are correct when you say this :-

The complete opposite where I live.

Some companies may require a urine test, but it is most definitely not a general work permit requirement, unlike the blood test for syphilis.

As I have mentioned before, there are some provinces where the blood test is not required. I, personally, have never had to take a blood test to get a work permit. That is in 19 years of teaching.

  9. Nothing wrong with buying secondhand tyres if you go to the right place.

With the amount of accidents and car write offs going on, it is possible to get nearly new ones.

There are many places selling these. Most places I have seen have tyres stacked up and you are free to go and choose which ones you want.

I bought a bridgestone with hardly any miles on it for 1300 baht supplied and fitted.

I have no recent knowledge re Bangkok, but for at least two years Surin Labour Dept.(not Immigration) has been requiring a blood test for syphillis, and a chest x-ray for TB.

And  right next door, in Buriram, there is no such requirement. Rules change from province to province.

  11. If or when a MotoGP is awarded to Thailand watch the rush of development on the existing track at ChonBuri.

It is my guess that ChonBuri will try to compete with CIC to get the races there.

Let's face it. If there was a track certified for Moto GP in ChonBuri they would easily be awarded the races.

The sticking point of big events in Buriram has always been insufficient hotels and reastaurants. ChonBuri will not have that problem.

They're trying to get Moto GP.

Moto GP will generate air traffic oncea year. The current events at the stadium/circuit generate minimal air traffic.

This upgrade has almost nothing to do with sport and more to do with the fact that air travel is becoming fashionable and affordable to many residents of Buriram.

The development costs quoted really aren't that high.

  13. Working on a life together makes a relationship stronger. I know of many  women who work knowing that they are building a better life with their partner and also understanding the value of money.

My wife has, over the past 10 years or so, built up a very profitable business. With this she has been able to buy things that she wants and has made a better life for herself. Maybe this should be part of the meaning of a "quality woman"

There are many values on this thread that are a little biased towards the  woman but should also be directed at some of the males in relationships. Infidelity is probably high on that list. With that comes lies. How many times do we hear a male talking about how they have rendezvous with other women???. It only takes a jealous or angry lady or man to see or hear that and and pass on the news and then, hey presto, the lady is a bitch for kicking the husband out.

After 17 years of successful marriage, my first anywhere, I think I probably know what I am talking about. I don't need anyone trying to tell me I am wrong, particularly those that have ballsed their relationship up and been driven out of their home.

Since you want to trade insults, perhaps I can suggest that you're the idiot talking rubbish.  I said most Thai women would prefer a quality Thai man over a foreigner....which would include Japanese, Koreans, farangs, etc.  But since quality Thai men don't exactly grow on trees, there's enough quality women to go around for all of us (well, maybe not you).  But you and a few other simpletons seem to believe that all or most Thai women prefer farangs, which is nonsense.

I have never said anything of the sort. I said your post was sad. Please quote me where I said anything about Thai women. I have only ever quoted you and Sinbin.

My wife is a quality woman, thank you. Together for 17 years and going strong. We can communicate in three different languages. We and enjoy and respect each others' culture. That is why we have been together for so long.

I am anything but some guy with his head in the sand.

The usual suspects who bang on about Thai women not being truthful are those who have been fleeced. Or those that come to Thailand and expect others to adapt to their ways. Or maybe the guys that come on here and talk about how they banish the family from their house by building walls and locked gates.

Please read what I write before you start accusing me of saying things that I haven't said.
