  1. Hey, give the OP a break. Who isn't lazy (sometimes) may throw the first stone.

The hostility by this Thai colleague doesn't bode well for the future. Chances are, she might spread rumors or somehow convince others that you are a bad person or whatever it is some females say. (I once rented a motorcycle from a truly lazy matron who would sometimes have the brightest M4 girls come and do her work coram publico. Pre-paying several months' rent in cash led to demands for payment. One might think that this Thai teacher has enough to do to mind her own business)?

You will be appreciated more elsewhere.

Does it have to be Bangkok?

Personally, I wish to avoid the big expensive city. Getting home takes a few minutes. And you won't find any cafe charging 95 Baht of a coffee.

    Q: Got the B-Visa sorted?

My employer just hired someone in your situation. He will start this Thursday.

  2. Hi All

no one replied in the Teaching forum. Years ago, a school would use fancy seals. They also put a stamp on each and every page.

But my present employer won't bother, referring to a tiny symbol on the letterhead as evidence that they are part of the government.

If there will be something missing, who pays? That would be me!

Police check: just got a receipt. Not the clearance itself! (They took fingerprints with ink and to process them will likely take weeks)

Q: Will missing seals and stamps or the Police clearance confirmation be deal breakers?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

  3. And this time, my employer won't use any seals. I do remember a lot of red seals on the pages...

Who pays the price if the paperwork gets rejected? Well... that would be me! Wasting whole days on buses, paying thousands of Baht.

Got a receipt for the 100 THB fee for the fingerprinting, but no Police clearance letter yet. (It would be crazy for someone on a database of criminals to wait to get arrested on the job, JMHO).

Have there been any changes? There is still time to beg to put some seals on the paperwork whistling.gif

  4. I didn't realise there was a top 20 list of Bangkok schools. And they are using an agency to recruit and paying 32k a month? They sound amazing.

Get on Ajarn.com, get your CV out and see what's about. Always easier to leave when you have something else lined up.

Hang on, they have aircon? Screw it, it's only the next 11 months of your life. What's the worst that can happen?

A: falling out with that woman. She will make your life miserable. The attendance stuff could e handled by a trusted student. Wasting time like this, I doubt the school will maintain its position in the top 20 of Bangkok.

  5. If you've already signed a contract, you break it at your own risk. A friend of mine had a contract signed, but the school never gave him a copy so that he could do his visa run. He called them 3 different times, and nobody could be bothered to return a phone call. He called one last time, telling them that he either needed the contract, or, if they didn't want him, then he'd go find a different school. No return phone call, again. In a civilized country, this would have been a breach of contract on the school's part, and allowed him to do what he needed to do in order to make arrangements for his next year of employment.

He got his new contract at a different school and did his visa run. On the first day of school, the director from the school that couldn't be bothered to return a phone call showed up with the other contract and told the director of the new school that he couldn't work there. Then, behind closed doors, he told my friend that he didn't want him as a teacher now because they 'had to go through an agency.' But, if he still wanted his new contract, the old director would let him work there if he paid him 10,000 bht/mo to cover the 'extra expenses' of going through an agency.

This is what we are dealing with here. It's a thugocracy. Beware and best of luck.

Thanks for the story. I'd never heard of a Director getting directly involved in the hiring and/or failing to honor a "contract". The 10,000.Baht payment doesn't make sense as you lay it out above. Who was in theory getting the 10,000.Baht per month, the current Director, the past Director, or the Agency?

A: the past director. It's clear AFAIK.

Someone should take note of known scams as those tend to be repeated ad nauseam.

  6. You say you are tired of the Thai system.

Maybe the other teachers have a reason for not liking you.

From your attitude towards Thais they have good reason.

Go elsewhere you are only spoiling things for good teachers. Bye bye.

How original. You are well liked by all, aren't you? You are good, the OP is bad - problem solved?

Well, there are Thai teachers with a chip off their shoulders. One had endless tales to tell about getting ripped off by a Nigerian she befriended. (He made her pay for stuff etc.). Then there are some bitter older women who like to hate. Perhaps some are projecting a past experience onto some other foreigner? (I have witnessed midnight runners' behavior and they did all others no favours).

It's human nature to dislike some people. @Colinneil, you do like all Thai teachers back?

  7. Still there Bikes are far more junk then Japanese Designs IE Honda, Yamaha....Look good in the show room but Fall apart soon after and depreciation is a Killer

Well if you take the case of currently topical Lifan, all as reported on this very forum, you will that find neither of these points are true.

All bikes working well after up to 5 years of use and around 5,000baht/year depreciation from new. Last year I was offered a 1 year old Honda CRF at B100,000 from a dealer, that is a B30,000 drop in just 12 months.

There are Chinese bike manufacturers that were crap and are now good, there are some that are still crap, but there are also Jap bikes that are now, shall we say of questionable quality. Plus things are changing rapidly, so don't be so quick to condemn a whole nation's products. Especially a nation who makes pretty much everything for the entire world.

Which model are you talking about? "5 k Baht depreciation"? First of all, it's not a straight line!! The moment you drive off the dealer's lot, more than 5 k are gone, JMHO.

  8. Originated from Italy yes sir but who knows where manufactured now.

Compared to all European manufactures, Benelli only produce 20% in Asia. You want to check other numbers, because 78% of Ducati's sold in Thailand are manufactered here... While I can garantee that 99% of all engine parts are produced in China. For all motorcycles currently produced in Thailand.

Got proof for your last sentence?

    Take Kawasaki...

  9. Hear, hear. But what about these Tuk Tuks in Isaan?

No license plate, no vest or number or "ID" on the vehicles. Was fleeced at 6 am. Some drivers play games. The agreed fare gets doubled - they just drive to some market and start badmouthing the customer. Kicking up a fuss, knowing full well that 100 Baht more isn't worth a confrontation.

    Rinse and repeat.

Allowing unlicensed "taxi" drivers use uninsured (?) vehicles to transport passengers? Whoa, why can't the military look into this?!?

  10. My point is the whole non b, work permit and teachers licence issue is difficult and not worth doing for some people here on a holiday for a year. I was wondering if they will decide not to stay.

Your being <deleted> for the sarcasm lost in issan.

To be fair, that's sort of what the powers that be wanted. They want teachers to have better qualifications for the job. I'm not entirely certain if the change in visas were to assist in this, but meh could be.

People on a holiday for a year should be able to continue working. Unless you are saying they were without a bachelors degree. In such a case, the government has never been that happy with them being here. A person with a degree and a smile can stay on teaching for at least 2 or 4 years without a problem.

And yes, I'm aware that it's a mess getting legal here. However, I can say honestly I've yet to have a problem. Just a headache chasing shit down at times I won't argue against that fellas.

I personally know a few people that are probably leaving, albeit some of this is due to salaries not moving in 10+ years.

Someone with a BA degree does not qualify to be a teacher in Thailand.

I know a teacher who is 26 years from Germany on a tourist visa and has banged up most of the girls at his classes in Udon Thani. A Thai would get suspended but a farang gets away with it.

Another Associate Professor at AIT (German once again) has also banged up most of the student girls in his classes. They even had weekly meetings discussing issues we are not permitted to discuss on this forum.

Farang teachers ? Sorry but to much experience in my last 28 years in Thailand, they should be all packing up and let the Thais sort out themselves if it can be sorted out.

The only schools that I know have good teachers are ISB, BPS and a couple of other international schools but no farang with a tourist visa would even get near them.

That's one thing they won't permit. It's a line no foreigner should dare to cross! Sex with minors and one's own students (plural)? Come on!

The perps would get thrown into jail pdq. A whisper would suffice to get them fired...

And how come you know all this? Including acceptance by the institutions?

Get real. This is one thing they won't overlook or tolerate!! One whisper and such an individual (won't call him a teacher) will be in very hot water.

Have you read that Irishman's book on being locked up in prison over here?

They wouldn't let some billionaire prince behave this way. It's one of the lines no foreigner should dare to cross.

  12. Wow, how long have you been fighting for this? You better watch out.

Someone will figure out that you will be to blame for the extra expense.

If I could change one thing over here, I would prevent directors from getting their hands on any "surplus funds".

Many months after registering at a local hospital etc., turns out the hospital never got one Baht or paperwork. Go figure.

You better check whether payments are really made!

  13. Strange, living in a country without having health insurance is a no-no, som nam na.

You might get help in Belgium from the CPAS?

    Are you in overstay also?

I understand your problem would be to find funds for a plane ticket plus your rent plus overstay fee and what else?

I had (and still have) health insurance, but, due to the fact that I had a history of minor back problems, my herniated disc was considered a pre-existing condition and therefore not covered.

At the moment, I have two choices (but, neither of them are possible due to lack of funds):

    1. Go back to Europe, which means a plane ticket, paying for the 20K overstay and the rent I currently owe. Pro: I would be in my own country. Con: I would be homeless.

    2. Go to Cambodia and get a new visa, which means paying for the overstay at the border, pay for a new visa and have 20K on hand to show the immigration officer if needed. Pro: I could easily find a job once I'm not on overstay anymore. Con: I still am about to be homeless in a couple of days and, even if I did find a job right away, I wouldn't have any money to pay for a room during the first month.

So, yeah, complicated issue. Which is why I asked for suggestions here.

I read somewhere that a full (20,000 Baht) overstay will lead to the overstayer getting banned for a year or years from returning? It would be vitally important for the OP if that could be substantiated.
