  1. When I moved to my new apartment a year ago, I had some staff put the cables to my surround speakers in the ceiling.

That looks great, but ever since, I have almost no volume (less than 10% I think) in my rear speakers.

I think it is due to the extension cables that I have that probably have a higher resistance and lose all of the volume (I know a few things about audio but I'm not an impedance and other terms expert).

I plugged in the rear speakers into the frontal speakers output and the volume was still at 10% so it's something in the cables. Since all is worked in to the ceiling, I cannot replace the cables.

I think I have about 10m of audio extensions in between (2x5m) ending in cinch connectors.

What is a VERY cheap amp that I can install next to my surround source so I can get some decent sound to the back end speakers. The speakers are simply Creative Labs mounted to the ceiling but are enough for the few times I put a movie on. My surround system is a Creative Labs DDTS-100 (and the speakers came with it).

I was thinking of something like the old turntable amplifiers. It would be great if I can adjust the output.

Any ideas on what and where to get it? I don't want to spend thousands for the 20 movies I watch a year :-).

  2. If you buy from AIS, DTAC or True, it will be a factory unlocked version; no need to jailbreak.

True. I don't want to jailbreak it to have it unlocked as it already is. I want it to use my user profiles without digging down into settings and flipping 10 toggles just to put my device into a certain mode. Another reason is to have "real" multitasking and not the "multitasking" that Apple offers which hardly is capable of anything decent. Lastly I want to take control of the device that I pay 26K for. Wireless synching, firewalling, all things that a standard device cannot do. Even the current "folders" that Apple offers is a mess to use. All of the small icons make all pages look the same. Better would be to use the jailbroken "categories" approach where you can assign a custom icon to a group of apps.

Looking forward to greenp0ison. Is that the firmware dependent JB? That would be almost impossible for Apple. Also good that the courts in the US ruled that jailbreaking is legal so it would be good that Apple tries to stop it. If it would release a jailbroken model or app for it that costs 3K baht, I'll gladly pay it.

How is the iPhone 4 doing for all of you so far? With the bumper or other cover, is reception better, worse or similar to the 3GS here in Thailand?

  3. The you can afford it comment is ignorant and shows of lack of respect for anyone non-Thai.

Maybe you can think about other people apart from expats who live here who it affects (and offends).

ATMs are great to make people feel secure. They don't need to carry a lot of money around because they can always go to an ATM.

When my mother visits, she normally uses the ATM to get some money out of her European bank account to buy things with here to benefit Thai businesses or families, right?

Then why should she be charged 150 THB when she wants to withdraw 1000 or 2000 THB? That is 15% (or 7.5%) in fees.

Please think before you speak. The tourists who used to think of Thailand as the land of smiles are first greeted with the most impolite immigration officers in the world before they can enter the money... then it's off to the ATM rip off factory. Maybe treat your tourists better and the economy will pick up sooner rather than later. A change of the paradigms you hold in your head will be helpful as well.

  4. The usual headache: bridges, accesspoints, routers.

    The magic word: OSI model.

    Layer 1

This consists of the physical network - in this case the utp wiring for the LAN part and the radio signals for the WiFi part. There's 4 non-overlapping bands in the 2.4GHz range: if you configure channels 1, 5, 9 and 13 on 4 nearby accesspoints, these will not interfere with eachother.

    Layer 2

This layer has nothing to do with TCP/IP yet. It's the layer where MAC addresses play a role. An accesspoint works as a bridge on this layer: it bridges traffic between the wired and non-wired physical networks. To perform this function, it only needs to know which MAC addresses are on both physical networks and it'll keep track of these addresses in a table.

    Layer 3

This is where the IP protocol starts. All physical networks that are bridged together at layer-2 are seen as 1 network on layer-3. This means that all devices on this network will have an IP address from the same range, and they will all be able to ping each other.

An accesspoint has an IP address, but that's only for the purpose of configuring/managing the accesspoint. It's IP address does not play any role in it's basic function: bridging between the wired and wireless network.

In the setup of the OP there's a network consisting of 2 accesspoints and a router which connects this network to the internet. The easiest setup is to make this one single layer-3 network:

Use the network 192.168.0.0/24 (/24 means the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0)

    Give the router address 192.168.0.1

Give accesspoint1 address 192.168.0.2 and set it to channel 5

Give accesspoint2 address 192.168.0.3 and set it to channel 9

Configure the same SSID on both accesspoints; any device will automatically select the strongest signal.

If you're using a wireless router as an accesspoint: use one of the LAN ports to connect it and leave the WAN port unconnected. Only configure an IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.

Configure only one dhcp service, e.g. on the router that connects to the internet.

    Hi Prasert,

    1) Thank you a lot for your post. A question regarding layer 1. I have a lot of traffic around me and most of them on channel 1, 6, 11. Currently I have my AP's set up for channel 4 and 8 as they seem to be rather empty. Is that a good choice or should I change it to 5 and 9 anyway even though my signal strength may weaken?

    2) Regarding layer 3. I'm no expert on subnets so bear with me :-). I have it currently set up as 192.168.1.1 .. is there any way that I can keep that? I had someone set up a vpn connection to my machine from my web server so I can access my mail remotely. I uses my 192.168.1.61 ip address somehow and I have no idea how it would need be changed. Is there any other solution to this?

    3) The last points were clear and are what I think I was doing. I just don't understand why 192.168.3.1 is responding to pings to 192.168.2.1 (before I changed them it was the same 192.168.1.3 responding for 192.168.1.2)

  5. @welo

The outdoors (DD-WRT) Linksys is in router mode.

It has the choice between DHCP server or DHCP forwarded so I checked forwarding and entered my gateway which acts as an DHCP server.

Under routing it has also "Dynamic Routing". I can choose the interface between (1) Lan & WLAN [currently selected), (2) disable, (3) WAN, 4 (both)

The outdoors (stock firmware) Linksys is in Access Point mode. Nowhere do I see a router option.

I have given it a static Ip and the gateway is 192.168.1.1

    @astral

My access points use different channels away from the predominant frequencies used around here (1,6,12 :-)). It is not an issue of not being able to connect to them wirelessly, I cannot get into the admin (neither ping them) from my wired network.... and worrisome is indeed that the 192.168.3.1 is responding to pings I send to 192.168.2.1

  6. I was able to order the 3G 64GB at 33.800 at a shop called happy mobile. By the time I wanted to buy it all of MBK was already sold out and after scouting for a few hours I got one shop that literally went to each and every shop to get me one.. The total price was 36K as I did not feel like waiting 2 more days.

Apart from that... the iPad is beyond expectations. Battery life, easy of use, ... stunning. I think I'm putting up my laptop for sale next week. This is all I need.

  7. I've set them up like this now. Please let me know if I made any mistakes or what I should do next.

adsl router at 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.0.0

indoors ap at 192.168.2.1 subnet 255.255.0.0

outdoors ap at 192.168.3.1 subnet 255.255.0.0

I have set my workstation as 192.168.1.40 subnet 255.255.0.0 and gateway 192.168.1.1

I can still connect to 192.168.3.1 admin

I can still not connect to 192.168.2.1 admin

when I do I get a destination host unreachable and the response comes from 192.168.3.1

  8. Thanks for that. I will go tomorrow around 10am. If you plan to buy one tomorrow, send me a PM. Maybe we can get the price down a bit more if we buy a few. Also applies to other board members.

I was there today again to buy one, but I was a bit shocked: the price went down (within a few days since the last post) 2,000 bahts. Now 35,000 seems to be the usual price for a 64GB 3G iPad. I asked at a small shop, smiling, to please give the *final* price, and the seller asked for 34,500 also smiling.

I found this place: "Atomic", B23 (there are more with the same name, the one I reference is at "B23", I don't know if the rest are the same) who asked directly for 35K bahts. No need to bargain. Phone 08-666-222-19 / 08-1310-4503. Good atmosphere there. Anyway 35K seems to be the standard price now.

But if we wait 4 days more will it be 33K bahts? 8 days 31K? Weird...

If you are going to buy it there I'll be happy to buy it with you.If I'm able to buy it with AMEX for the same price, that'd be great (I don't feel very comfortable paying in cash in MBK and I like AMEX).

I've sent you my mobile number by message. Can you send me yours so we can contact each other? I will be at MBK at 10 coming in by BTS.

I did not get your mobile yet so no way of notifying... My meeting schedule at work just changed so I'll be going in the afternoon. Text me if you want to make a purchase at the same time ;-).

  9. when you are running a ping, are you doing that from a PC that is in the .100+ range? and which access point router are you connected to when you perform the ping?

in the meantime, might i suggest something to help troubleshoot? manually set your indoor router to something like 192.168.2.1 and then set the outdoor to 192.168.3.1.

    got off them both 192.168.1.X.

    Hi anothertorres,

I am running it from 192.168.1.61 and I am directly patched in by utp-cable to the switch. That is the switch that connects to my broadband router as gateway and to the two APs.

I have just found out that my laptops that connect through the indoor AP can get on the net. I can also access the admin of the AP from the laptop's side.

However from my main workstation I cannot ping to it or access the admin.

I think somehow the outdoors AP might be taking over somehow? Broadcasting dns info in a way? I'm not at all familiar with routing over different subnets. Can you specify the instructions about that?

    Thanks for your help.

  11. I have a zyxel broadband router that sits at 192.168.1.1

I have a Linksys WAP54G Access Point that sits at 192.168.1.2 to serve my connection indoors.

I have a Linksys WAP54G Access Point that sits at 192.168.1.3 to serve my connection outdoors.

The indoors one runs the stock firmware.

The outdoors one runs the dd-wrt firmware as it allows me to crank up the power if needed.

My gateway settings are 192.168.1.1 (the router) which also runs DHCP. My PC have fixed IP numbers. Only laptops and phones use dhcp to get a number assigned.

I can ping the outdoors one (x.x.x.3) but not the indoors one (x.x.x.2) when the outdoors one is on.

    When I ping 192.168.1.2, I get a reply from 192.168.1.3 (!!!!!!) saying destination unreachable.

In fact, even more bizarre (I'm running a ping -t) I just was able to ping it for 2 seconds, end it is unreachable again.

192.168.1.2 is forwarding the DHCP from my broadband router in the range 192.168.1.100-110 so there is no overlap.

I have absolutely no idea why I cannot even ping it. I even have to log in via my iPhone to that access point and use its IP address that way to be able to get to the settings.

I don't want to flash the indoors WAP54 to dd-wrt as it took me over a day last time and I don't really have that much time left to get back to work.

What can I do and why do pings to .2 get answered from .3?

  13. It seems that I'll have to delay my trip until tomorrow. In the meanwhile, please let me know where to get it at 37K. (name, floor, shop) and I'll go and pick one up (maybe more).

    Tha name is "Bingo mobile". 4th floor. Phond numbers: 081 8509928 / 081 4410364

I didn't buy it that day, but I'll go there again today. I wonder if I can bargain the price down. 7,000 bahts over the real price its a bit too much.

  14. I just brought an iPad 3G back to Chiang Mai from the US (I did NOT activate the ATT Sim while in the US). Yesterday I went to Pantip Plaza in CM and bought an AIS 3G sim card that has 200 MB of data download activated on it. The guy in the shop said it would work on an iPad, but I really don't think he has a clue what one really is. I trimmed the Sim to Micro size, installed it and after a few seconds of searching came up with TH GSM E in the carrier info section at the top left corner of the screen. That would indicate that I had an Edge connection. I'm in the 3G footprint of CM, but I wasn't concerned about not having a 3G connection. I tried to connect to the internet via Safari but I got an error stating that PDP Authentication failed. I googled a bit to see if I could find a solution, tried a couple things including resetting the network settings, but so far, nothing seems to work. My iPad sees the AIS network, but I can't get access. Does anyone have any similar experiences?

I think that the AIS 3G frequency is not supported by the iPad. True has 3G in Chiang Mai. You may also want to try 365.co.th or i-kool.net (both TOT 3G). Just buy a few cheap cards and try. Good luck

Yes, that's it. AIS 3G trial is on a 3G frequency not supported by most phones, so it would make sense the ipad 3G couldn't use it either.

Btw because this keeps coming up all ipads are sold unlocked and don't require activation or anything else. They work with any sim card.

I thought about the frequency issue, but I did some research and found this:

    The iPad's 3G modem supports UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850, 900,1800, 1900 MHz).

I believe that I have seen somewhere that AIS 3G is on 900 Mhz, so it should be OK. Also, If my iPad couldn't receive the frequency of AIS, then the carrier wouldn't even show up in the upper corner of the screen and it does.

Not really. It means AIS will work for EDGE on the 900 Mhz but you will not get 3G (HSPA) as 900 Mhz is not supported. Only 850 (the other providers' frequency) is supported.

  15. When I cut it down to micro sim size, are there convertor cards that I can put the micro sim in to turn it to be a normal size again so I can still use it on my aircard?

  18. I had some people come in to hook up my rear speakers and run the cables on top of the ceiling.

All looks good, everything is tucked away neatly (after opening up the ceiling in 2 places, plastering it and painting it again) but my sound volume is gone.

They used 10m stereo cinch cables and I guess that that results in a lot of loss. I am on a low budget so I've been using (for years) a 5.1 creative labs set that has decent volume output and the source comes from my Creative Labs Dolby Prologic II decoder (great box as it has 7 audio inputs and can do a lot).

The setup itself is fine (I'm quite knowledgeable in this), only the rear speakers are at about 10% the volume of the front speakers, even when not using surround. To make sure, I simply switched the rear cables with the front cables and even then only about 10% of volume was left.

What (and where) can I buy something to amplify the rear speakers. Mind you, they should already be amplified somehow as it is not a mere line-out.
