1. I need to buy a new all-in-one printer and looked around in Panthip yesterday.

    4 models caught my eye:

HP Photosmart Premium. 11,700 THB (A4 - Full duplex - Bigger print dpi colors - higher cost ink)

    HP Officejet Pro 8500. 12,900 THB (A4 - Duplex {print only} - Cheaper ink)

    Brother MFC-5890CN. 8,490 THB (A3 - No duplex - small paper tray)

    Brother MFC-6890CDW. 18,990 THB (A3 + {Full?} duplex and bigger paper tray)

Apart from that I know that some models support bluetooth, wireless, and print-on-cd but I'm not much interested in that.

The main thing that interests me

    1) Is the ink waterproof? I heard from a vendor that the ink was waterproof but I've seen so many printers that I don't remember which one it was about.

    2) I like the 2Y warranty on the Brother (as opposed to HP's 1y). How are your experiences with HP printers beyond their 1 year warranty?

    3) What is your experience with these machines?

I'm still considering if I should buy the A3 brother as it is quite a premium and it might be cheaper to have things printed out in a print shop (see my other post).

I will order a printer on Wednesday.... Gosh.. that means today....

Any experiences, suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thanks

  2. The original post seems quite biased and surely does not reflect well on the part of TV in my opinion.

There are two parties each with opposing but similar interests: advertising revenue (or rather have it: a way to pay for the personnel).

BKK Post has journalists that are paid for producing the articles. Sites (such as TV) copy the full content and republish it without any costs. Results: TV gains from added audience and added revenue. BKK Post loses from less audience and less revenue. If BKK Post articles are no longer republished, surely part of the pageviews of TV will go down as the audience will go to the original source to read the article. I surely can understand the BKK Post as I also have people working for me and they cost money as well.

Try to find a compromise, after all, the free copyright breach of the last years is what gave sites like TV the audience it has today. There is no shame in admitting that.

    Good luck,

  3. I have a True Wifi account that I use when I am not at home. I like it for the most part but it disconnects every 90 minutes. I have to restart my network adaptor to reconnect to True Wifi almost every time. Sometimes I do not need to restart my network adaptor. Overall, it takes about 5 mintues to reconnect to True Wifi.

Do you guys have any workaround for this annoying thing?

There is no workaround. It is initiated by True itself to make sure people don't use it as a permanent connection. I know it's annoying. Especially when used to download a long file or when in an online meeting. I hope they would increase it to at least 3 hours as well. You could use 3G though if you have good reception in your area. Speeds are generally better as well.

  4. The fact is that expats (and tourists) feel less and less welcome each year because of these seemingly harmless things... It creates a habit though... A habit of bad sentiment between foreigners and locals. It would be perfectly OK to go for a price increase IF on the other hand also there was some positive news towards the expat community.

The only thing we here is added restrictions, hikes and fines.

What about benefits? What about removing restrictions? What about land ownership? What about for God's sake... having an English speaking news and information channel geared towards expats in Bangkok????

All of the restrictions, hikes and fines have not proven to add new services or convenience to foreigners.

When the government will start to treat the expat community as a valuable asset, they will see that this country can recover much faster. When they belittle expats, expats will be less inclined to contribute their full 100% to improving this country.

Instead of focusing on our differences... Let's focus on what we have in common.

  5. It would be good for the Thai government to take a more positive approach on foreigners. Not only is there the blatant discrimination, but also fee hikes like what they are considering is sending the wrong signal to the expat community.

Basically Thailand is saying: We don't like foreigners, so we will fine you for being here. It's things like this that create bad blood and racial problems in the long term. Also it does not much to increase their budget. It just creates more negative sentiment with expatriates.

After all, .... it is not a 1000 THB increase that will make people stop from getting a work permit, but if there is yearly 'harassment' like this, after a few years... expats will just go to a country that is more inviting to foreign know-how (and with it... bye bye 4 more Thai employees). I have to admit I have been thinking about it. There are other countries in Southeast Asia that are starting to be more and more appealing with a workforce that have decent English skills and good benefits for the expat and where you don't feel like being a cash cow with no rights.

We'll have to see if the Department will once again go for a few easy bucks now and will continue to hurt the Thai economy and the community of Expats or if they will see that we are living in a world without any real borders and that old-style vision is hurting them in this new society.

    Good luck Thailand.

  6. I went to pick mine up at Urban Park in Bangkok. I must have been lucky as I wondered if I should tick the first day (today was in fact a bit inconvenient for me) or pick it up on 29th or 30th. I decided to pick 28th as I would have time to get to know it over the weekend.

Staff was very friendly there and not a very long queue (maybe 200 people there). Took about one hour (mostly filling out forms). I think the next rush will be after office hours.

From what I have heard Apple simply has not delivered enough phones to Thailand. The phone is great. Been getting to know it over lunch. It will take a few hours (up till 24 hours) to be set up if you want a new number but about 4 hours later I can call. I just need to double check my settings for the unlimited wifi as that does not work yet. 3G was pretty well here too.

I also bought a Griffin cover. Easy, stylish and has a lens protector/enhanced on the back. Now I have to learn how I can get all of my contacts (1000+) from my dinoasaur nokia to the iphone. Any ideas?

  7. This can be tricky, if not impossible. I've not tried setting up a multihomed XP box receiving addresses via DHCP (WLAN) and I'm not sure if it's even possible, but if you want to give it a try...

I'm assuming the IP of the VPN server is static.

Do your server and laptop receive a private IP when you connect to the VPN? If not I don't see how you can create a route if the IP on your laptop is always changing unless you figure out all of the networks being used by True for their wifi and create routes for all of them.

You'll want to put your LAN on a different subnet from the WLAN. If the WLAN is on the 192.168.1.0 network, use 192.168.2.0 for your LAN.

Now assuming 123.123.123.123 is the IP of your VPN server, 192.168.1.1 is the WLAN gateway

    route -p add 123.123.123.123 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.254 metric 1 if 13

"if" should be the WLAN interface which you can find with "route print".

Once you have the two gateways on there the routes will change to who-knows-what so...

So many variables here with your VPN, WLAN, etc., that if you get this to work I'd love to know how! :)

A better option would be to run vmware server (free) and place your email server on a XP, Linux or whatever OS inside vmware. This way you can give it a dedicated adapter and you won't have to worry about the routes.

    Thanks surface.

Both the Wlan and the Lan have 192.168.1.1 as gateway but I only have control over the LAN so I could change that one.

I use static IP addresses on both the LAN and WLAN above the .50 range at the end.

I'm using openvpn (set up by my linux server admin who is not very knowledgeable in XP unfortunately) so as soon as XP starts, openvpn connects to the fixed ip of the webserver and establishes a connection.

Hm... I'm coming to think of installing VMware indeed but I'm afraid of adding another copy of bloated XP to the mix. The machine has 2GB ram and only 3.5GB out of 4GB could be used if I add more memory on a 32 bit system... I use about 1GB for memcache to speed up my emailserver (about 800MB of emails).

I somehow feel the routing should be able to do the trick... I'm just not very familiar with it :-).

  8. Meanwhile, True Move has launched its 3G wireless broadband service on a trial basis, using its existing 1,800MHz spectrum.

The service is available in downtown Bangkok, including the Silom, Siam Square, Sathorn, Ploenchit and Sukhumvit areas, as well as at Suvarnabhumi Airport and in Cha-am, Hua Hin and Phuket.

Maybe a stupid question, but is the True 3G package worthwhile if I live in Chiang Mai (and rarely get into BKK)? I see AIS promoting 3G all over the place in CM now, so can I buy the iphone and sign up with AIS 3G instead? Besides that, I'm already with AIS so I suppose I could keep the same mobile #, right?

And what about True WiFi? I see that promoted here in CM, but have never bothered to check it out. Does AIS have a comparable WiFi service?

    Either way, I'm getting the 3Gs!! :)

Let me also ask what me be stupid questions (I am not a technical person):

    1. I understood that 3G service is limited to only certain areas of Bangkok, and was going to ask where in Bangkok it is available. I see above, however, 3G means different things - right? I will need to figure this out on my own I guess (but if anyone wants to explain the difference in practical terms, I would be grateful). You list areas and many thanks for doing so, but is there a website that depicts the area of coverage. Sukhumvit is a long street. Can anyone, for example, point me to a map where showing True will offer 3G service? Is there a website that lists the area, graphically, where this service is availble?

    2. As I understand the True package, if you sign up with their two year package you get both 3G (where it is available) and WiFi where True's WiFi is available. Can anyone confirm? This is what the salesperson said, but confirmation would be nice.

    3. Will a iPhone 3Gs automatically switch from to WiFi when its near a True WiFi hotspot? I was thinking about how I use my phone and computer now, and most of the time when I am out of the office and want access to email, I am near a WiFi hotspot. So if I am out of the 3G coverage area, I could get still get fast service if I was near a True WiFi hot spot, right? Or do I have this totally wrong?

    4. Can I use both the WiFi hot spot on my phone and iPhone. Not at the same time, of course, but generally. I'd think the answer is yes, but would like to make sure. (As you might guess, I enjoy Starbucks).

    5. Any plans to expand True's 3G coverage? If so, and English language websites that describe those plans? Any insight into this?

    Thanks in advance.

I've been using 3G for a few months now and if you're along a BTS you're covered in most areas. Around saphan kwai there is a great signal. Ari is a little less but Victory Monument is full strength. Yesterday I was driving around in a taxi (or rather stuck in traffic) for about an hour in the Siam square district between henri dunant and sukhumvit and silom and everywhere I got a strong signal so I held my meeting from a netbook in the cab using 3G. I'm not familiar with coverage elsewhere in the city but from Friday onwards after I pick up the iphone I'll be able to know more about that ;-).

If anyone has any reports about coverage in other parts of Thailand such as the islands, please let all of us know as well. It's handy not to pack any note or netbook if you know you can get by with emails on the iphone.

    Cheers

  9. Currently I have a VPN runnning that allows me to connect from a certain port on my web server to read my mail over the VPN connection to my mailserver at home as indeed I had no control over the ports of the free wifi. That has been taken care of that way.

I just want to make sure that that network card to the free wifi is used for the mailserver traffic.

I thought about getting an additional wifi package but the sweet part about the true 8Mbps is that it comes with 2Mbps wifi in the city... which is great as that really allows me to get some work done from just about anywhere.

Another option would be to go for an additional lower package (2nd line) but this would add to costs, while it still does not solve the routing :-).... as I already have free wifi and even a 3G USB with good connection here at my place to use for that. I just need someone who can set up the routing for it.

Any server/system/network admins that can lend a hand?

  10. I have a zyxel Prestige 660HW-T1 sitting here as well as the new zyxel Wifi v1.

Both give me lots of problems when Bittorrents are active because of the threshold settings / available connections the zyxel can handle.

Which router (brand/model) are you using with the 8Mbps true connection that is reliable? I am willing to buy a new broadband router to make sure my connections stay reliable as I often can't even open regular web pages when BT is on.

  11. I have the newly offered True 8Mbps package so I went for it. It also comes with 2Mbps wifi in the city which I like.

However, you log in to wifi in the city with the same account name and password so your connection at home disconnects.

I am running a kerio email server at home to make sure that I always have all emails in my place where I live but as you can see, I cannot access my emailserver when I am on wifi in the city because the account is then already in use.

The building where I live also has free wifi indoors and I used it before.

What I want to do is.... go in the city, connect with my true wifi account and still be able to access my mailserver (or even RDP). So, that part has to go over the wifi instead of over the regular adsl connection.

Is there anyone that can help me out with this routing issue? I'm using a legal version of XP SP3. I still have multiple network cards laying around as well as hubs etc.

A load-balancing/failover system is not a solution as I only have control over 1 WAN I think (the adsl line). The other network is coming in over the LAN.

Please post here or PM me if you can help me out. Thanks ;-).

    Maybe this software will help

    http://www.wlanbook.com/disable-wireless-c...d-lan-xp-vista/

However the site is not clear if it switches only if the lan cable is disconnected or if you are unable to access the Internet

Thanks but it does not really work for me as the lan is still connected but there will be no IP address assigned to it from the ADSL modem elsewhere on my network. I am using fixed IPs.

What I really need is someone to set up the routing tables for 2 programs to go out through another network card and use the wifi.

If anyone can help, please let me know what it will cost.

    Thanks

  13. Since 3G coverage is good in my area and my fixed Skype phone broke down, I've ordered the Iphone 3GS and will pick it up on Friday.

I walked in to the True Urban Park shop at Paragon and was overwhelmed with the amount of covers available (all wrapped so you can hardly see anything)...

    so....

    1) What brands/types of covers can you recommend for the Iphone 3G/S ... and which to avoid?

    2) Did anyone try the cover with the part that improves the camera lens for macro-shots?

    3) Did anyone try the cover that has an extra battery built in? How much weight does it add? Is it worth it?

I read some posts before and I will want to jailbreak the 3GS for sure.

    4) What is the right procedure to do (keeping in mind that I don't want to void my warranty so I will need to be able to back up the original phone somehow first)?

I have already lots of audible audiobooks on my pc (downloaded with Audiblemanager).

    5) Can I just copy them to the iPhone or should I download them once again? Is anyone using the improved audible enhanced audio format? Apart from better sound quality, is it more easy to navigate to different chapters on these audiobooks as I remember that on my pc, that is something that was lacking on audible.

Any help and other recommendations are much appreciated. I'm new to the iPhone but I'm most interested in the applications.

  14. It might be good if police sets a good example by themselves. Often I see police on motorbikes crossing full white lines, driving through red lights when there is no emergency and breaking many more traffic regulations than I can think of in this short period of time. Some (in-office) police officers drive motorbikes and don't even have drivers licenses!

I have no problem with fining people for breaking the law but it would be good to start to set a clear example and start with cleaning up the police force itself. Once that happens, people will automatically have more respect for laws and regulations.

  15. I don't really think it will be a significant speed improvement as it is claimed because dinosaur providers such as TOT hardly use the CAT-IIG. They want to save costs and get most of their bandwidth from TM. They will tap into it over there probably.

The reason why I state it is that overall speeds to the USA are very reasonable but speeds and connectivity to EUROPE is a complete DISASTER. Instead of adding more and more bandwidth to the USA it would make more sense to double the bandwidth to Europe instead.

That in itself will increase the speed to the USA as well as now 70% of all traffic to Europe is passing through the USA which makes it enormeously slow. Think of 500 ms instead of 200ms.

It would also be good to instead have a few technicians who at least know the basics of routing data around the world.

Often packets destined for the USA traverse the European backbone, while packets for Europe pass through the US. Absolutely ridiculous. I have sent them already many emails about it but as with everything in the CAT and TOT dinosaur companies... nothing happens and not even a reply is sent back even though the emails have a delivery report.

Must have some real geniuses working over there.....

  16. One has to make the assumtion that the iste own viewed

or was able to view the whole site daily for it ti be intentional.

Even after 2 months sections of sites I have beult were not looked at.

It basically demands that you have 24/7 moderators

all on the same page that SEE every single thing done by others...

No vacations no staff shortages not missing anything.

Or go to jail. Onerous requirements for sure.

That depends on whether a complaint was made to the owner of the site. If they'd been informed about it but had left it online then they should be held jointly liable with the poster.

That's what it should be, but is that how the law sees it. We need some clarity on this and clear laws that leave no room for 'interpretation' depending on what/who the subject is.

A lot of top-notch IT services simply cannot even be launched in Thailand because of laws like this. All of those investments will gladly go to other countries in the region that has a clear ICT policy and an ICT ministry that starts to be active in stimulating the economy instead of bringing it further down as is currently the case with 3G and telco number portability.
