  1. I really think it's time for all site owners, publishers. ISPs and internet users as a whole to come together and put a petition forth to improve the law. Thailand can never be any kind of IT hub with these draconian laws.

The only hub Thailand is, is a hub of confusion, bad legislation and corrupt law enforcement.

  2. LOL.

How stupid are they? It will take a lot more than a few internet terminals.

For starters... friendly staff, security, operators, decent and affordable food, a decent layout...

Oh, did I forget about the thieves that steal your valuables....?

Or the tourists that are being locked up and blackmailed by authorities?

Yeah right... Top 10 airports.... Lol. Burry your head in the sand... Go on...

  3. Open it and replace the cells - real easy

    BR>Jack

Well, my question, as stated before is - where does one get the 6-cell battery?

Or rather, back to my original question... Where to get a NB200 with 6-cell battery immediately instead of the 3 or 4-cell battery.

I know how to replace a battery!

  4. Open it and replace the cells - real easy

    BR>Jack

Where to get a 6-call battery. The ones I have seen sold here come with a 3 or 4-cell battery instead of the 8 hours battery and I've heard that a seperate 6-call battery will cost anywhere neat 6000 THB. Makes it a huge waste of money to buy one seperately.

  5. One thing I have to say... I just checked with a torrent application and ports do not appear to be open so if you want to download torrents on true 3G, it appears you are out of luck ;-) which is not a bad thing as it will really keep mobile internet fast.

  6. Thanks Jdietz.. I'll go and have a look tomorrow. I had forgotten about Fortune completely. They have some specialized shops indeed.

Monty, BKK, Pahonyothin area. Using True HSPA. Getting between 1 and 2 Mbps on it. A few weeks ago even got 4 Mbps down. Now it mostly picks up Edge but I just changed the settings to manual so it only connects when there is 3G and it works. I just want to make sure that I get a stronger signal and have a possibility to try out some other providers when they do their 3G trials but 3G truly beats wifi 256 kbps and forced disconnections every 90 mins :-).

  7. - I was in Panthip a week ago and I was looking for an external antenna that connects to my Sierra Wireless U881 (3G/EDGE). Sometimes I get 3G at my place but most of the time it's just unreliable EDGE. The building is full of metal and concrete so I wanted to buy a blackcat or similar external antenna to put on the balcony. Any idea where to buy this in BKK. I tried the shop on the corner at the 3rd floor I think run by the Indian guy but they did not have external antenna's for 3G/GSM. Any other shops that you know do?

    - Also I have 4 Leonics UPS (750 Watt). Two off them go dead after 10 seconds of power failure so after a few years all batteries are dead. Where can I get those batteries replaced and any idea about the costs?

    Cheers,

BTW. In response to my earlier threads ... the Izen Travel Honey (GPS) works like a charm ;-).

  8. TOT has been a complete disaster. Today speed (and more important reliability) is close to ZERO, as was it last week for 3 days.

Their helpdesk does not speaks any English.

Their helpdesk email is not even checked.

    Nothing ever changes.

They succesfully installed a lot of more bandwidth months ago, making it up to par with True's TIG but TOT completely mismanges their own IIG. It's simply a monster and the slightest thing that goes wrong send the whole network tumbling down. I wished only I could move but this crappy (though brand new) building only has TOT.

  9. Some staff at Jedi were good about 4 years ago. The last couple of years I avoid them. Especially the 'little boss'.

She has always been very uninterested and unfriendly and it carries over on the rest of her staff. I always found the shop just next door to be much friendlier and knowledgable.

  10. That Izen Travel Honey seems like a great idea. It isn't by any chance possible to push a button on it to mark like a particular point of interest?

On the current gps module connected to the eeepc it is about 40m off but that may be due to the building I'm in (about 80m up in the sky) and it always locates me in the garden of a nearby house about 40-50m away from my building.

I'm still wondering though if there is a way where I can both have it tracked and view maps in realtime (as to have some sense of direction).

With the izen it just keeps a log and when no satellite is available for some time you'll have a dead spot.

What about tracking on mobile phones in symbian or (if it's even available) on iphone. What happens when the gps satellite connection is gone?

I tried with an eeepc and a gps module in a cab and it was not even able to estable a gps lock.... I once tried walking with both in a backpack and kept google earth running but after 50m it lost synch and when I got home the rest was not tracked.

I hope to use it to scout out some locations to find a new townhouse or condo as well as looking what's around my neighbourhood.

I also read an article about the new google location service. How does that fit in to it all as it seems interesting but I'll need a 'live' instead of a 'pure tracking' device.

    http://news.cnet.com/google-latitude-keeps...ends-locations/ (google latitude I meant).

  11. I want to explore some more of the city and don't feel like carrying a backpack along with an eeepc, 3g/edge modem and google earth + goops.

    - What are the (cheapest) alternatives?

    - How reliable is gps tracking. Even on a aircard gps lock with 6 satellites it showed me 40m off target.

Ideally it should be a cheap (second hand?) mobile with edge that has all set up to send my position to the server every x seconds. It would be greatt if somehow I can also press a button signalling a place of interest.

Any ideas long the mobile or any other route?

+ Has anybody used the iphone for gps tracking? Not just looking up your location but actually doing what I outlined above?

  12. VPN is not circumvention software or tricks. It means Virtual Private Network. It has been in use for many years by mutinationals and SME's to link offices together by creating a secure (read encrypted) layer for their data to go through on top of the current (unencrypted) internet network.

By creating a VPN all data sent between those points is just a large chunk of encrypted data that is impossible to crack on short notice. That's what makes it possible for businesses to exchange iformation such as credit card numbers, managing remote servers,... etc

It is a technology, just as you have a technology called p2p (peer to peer).

It can be used for good and for bad things but it does not mean the technology should be discarded because government wants to pry on your data. That should not be the government's duty. I think in these times of financial crisis people in charge would rather think about aiding initiatives instead of stifling them but this is thailand. Tunnel vision abounds...

  13. VPN is the only legal way to go. If they ban vpn in Thailand then 70% of businesses that rely on secure communication can just pull the plug. Nobody will exchange sensitive business data on a non-secure network to Thailand.

The whole filtering/censorship thing reeks.... and it's time that people in charge see that sweeping the problem under the carpet does not make it go away. Let there be freedom and people will have the chance to make good decisions. Treat them as children and you open pandora's box. So much for thailand's ITC ambitions.

  14. Thanks!

I went in to the True shop to buy a true move sim so I can try it out in the building I'm at. Sadly reception here on my old phone is quite horrible, but even AIS has problems in my building with small mini AIS antenna's in the hallway. I wonder what upgrading of my old phone to an HTC, omnia or Iphone will do in terms of call quality. I'm still using a nokia 6600.

My main area where I will use it is in and around bkk. I hope their network will improve over time. I just don't like to see that on regular truewifi.net accounts they have lowered the speed from 1Mbps before to only 256kbs... Not really hi-speed anymore IMHO and paying a few hundred bahts an hour for a high Mbps wifi card is just crazy.

What about cheap 3g, 3.5g, edge/gprs usb sticks? Which ones are good and well priced? Will they all work? I still need one of those for the eeepc.

  15. Since a lot of you have experience with the Iphone I hope you can help me out.

For those of you who use True Move in Bangkok... How is your reception? I have an old nokia (on AIS) that I want to replace because reception is quite bad in comparison to newer phones. It will depend on the signal of True Move though, so how is your experience?

Also I'm trying to determine what to do so I can use the eeepc and/or iphone for wifi/edge... I have some specific questions and posted a topic about it at http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Needed-Inter...Ro-t234856.html

  16. Hi guys,

I need your help and I'm sure a lot of people will want to do the same thing so I hope this thread can become a reference for anyone that wants to make the best out of being online in Thailand/Bangkok.

Here is what I currently have:

    - EEEPC901

    - Old nokia phone with GPRS (no EDGE, slow) (TBR=to be replaced)

    - TOT ADSL at home (building only allows tot) (TBR later)

    - My own wifi AP at home

    - Failing skype base set (only at home) (TBR)

    What I want to do:

    (1) Replace my Skype base station at home as well as my old phone with a phone that has

    * GPRS/EDGE/3G/WIFI

    * GPS

    * SKYPE

    (2) Use my EEEPC to go onto the net in the city (no green wifi as it's only 64kbps) and use it for blogging, browsing, ...

    (3) Read the news from my mobile and use google maps/GPS without having to turn on my eeepc, use skype on my mobile, ...

    (4) Later on I will want to move to a True ADSL area but until such time I'm stuck with TOT so I need a solution for the rest, before that.

From what I have researched there are some options for mobiles:

    - Iphone 3G (locked in or unlocked)

    - Samsung Omnia

    - ...?

I know of the major advantages of the Omnia such as 5MP, etc... on the other hand the Iphone is sleek, easy to use and apparently when jailbroken is more hackable. Being hackable is not the main issue, but I don't want to be locked out of certain applications that I really want to be on a phone when I shelve out 20K+.

At present I have a preference for the Iphone because the package bundle with True unlimited wifi/edge seems very good.

The Iphone offer of True seems quite a good deal but I have some questions:

Q1) Has anybody jailbroken the 3G in the True package? What are your experiences? [i'm not talking about unlocking a phone, just jailbreaking it so you can install any applications you want and not just the ones that apple has approved].

Q2) The true deal has an offer with unlimited wifi and edge (later also 3G). I am interested in that package. However, it will benefit me more to use the wifi + edge on the eeepc than on the Iphone. How can this be done? Can I just put in the true info in the eeepc to have it run at the wifi AP's in the city?

Q3) The combo Iphone unlimited wifi is 1Mbps, in comparison to apparently only 256kbps (too slow for me) of the regular truewifi 450thb subscription. Are there alternatives?

Q4) I am currently tied in to TOT until I move. When I move to another location (not immediately unfortunately) I will subscribe to True ADSL again. If I am a True ADSL member, can I use my credentials (even at an additional fee) to log in to any TrueWifi access point in the city at an 'acceptable speed' meaning 1Mbps or rather 2 or 4Mbps that I have at home?

Q5) I will want that when at home the iphone connects to my WLAN, when out of range, to the wifi by true if available, if not then to the EDGE by true... Is this easily set up?

Q6) How does this affect simultaneous use of the iphone and eeepc? Any solutions as there might be a 'username' conflict.

Q7) Is anybody using Skype on the Iphone? I've heard that 'Fring' does the job for free. Any experiences?

Q8) I would rather not connect through the iphone to access the wifi/3g/edge as it will drain the battery. I have been thinking about buying a 3G/edge stick to put in the eeepc (mod it next to the RAM). How will I be able to use it for internet? This is probably the crux of the matter. How to switch between devices when needed, optimally using the iphone for navigation and skype calls, but switching to the eeepc with fast internet browsing at wifi points or edge when roaming.

  17. My friend is thinking of setting up an office or shop in Pattaya.

Can any of you help me out and tell me

    1) what the average wage is for administrative personnel and for people who work in an internet cafe?

It could be a new idea this internet cafe. not to many in town. :o

It would be to start something while deciding which business to venture into, not the main business in the long run ;-).

Does nobody have factual information on wages in Pattaya itself?

  18. My friend is thinking of setting up an office or shop in Pattaya.

Can any of you help me out and tell me

    1) what the average wage is for administrative personnel and for people who work in an internet cafe?

    2) what is considered regular working hours/days?

    3) what about vacation?

    4) what about finding a room for staff to live in? How much does that cost and where to start?

  19. Overall the law isn't such a bad thing.

Don't forget also that 10s of thousands of websites got unblocked last week. (They started being blocked under Thaksin). A website can now only be blocked after a court order.

Two things seem quite ludicrous. It can be part of the translation or it may be intentional. I hope at least that they will correct their mistakes:

    1) - Taking possession of your pc just by providing their ID's. I think a lot of offices will find this to be a new profitable business. Confiscate a pc... Sell it later. No proof. No problems.

    2) - Confiscating a pc for porn. I think they better start building some HUGE warehouses. They will be BUSY. School and university pc's are literally infested with porn. Does that mean no more pc's at school? Does that mean the end of the OLPC (one laptop per child) program... Oh God.. Does that even mean the end of Thailand the IT Hub????

Also what happens if you visit a site and there's a porn banner. It's stored on your pc... Big delemma. + The same argument as in number 1). Enforcement OUT of the bedroom please. Private life is private life but if that's the way they wanna go then they better outlaw sex unless you're married!

Apart from that it's a good start. Too bad it's not clear enough and it allows for exploitation.

Apart from that also... don't be so paranoid. Nothing is always about 'getting the farang'.

As a last note.. I remember reading that police does not have a well-trained team to tackle these computer related crimes and basically just forwards all of these things to the MICT. Since 50,000 sites have been unblocked the people at MICT need some things on hand. This is it. The problem is though.. are these trained and unbiased officials as the police should be?

I think what Thailand needs now is some clear internal policies, guidelines and training on how to cope with this new law and how to use (not abuse) it.

    Cheers
