  1. DiA that site is a joke, but I am sure it makes a pile of money on Google hits. MeetAsianBabe is not exactly my angle. Not surprising you are having trouble with that and it is for sale.

DiA is one of the biggest competitors in the Asian online dating space. Whatever they do, you should take notice.

My web site meetAsianBabe.com is doing well and is making money. I am not selling because it is losing money.

A couple of years ago, HotOrNot.com sold for around $15 million. Do you think the owner thought he is having trouble?!

  2. Anyone find a LCD repair service. My LCD that was working fine in USA will not work now. Picture flash's on for about 1 sec then screen goes blank. If you disconnect the video and reconnect same thing.

I was never able to repair my LCD monitor for less than the cost of buying a new one. I tried many shops, including the original manufacturer.

Sadly it is cheaper to buy a new monitor than repair it, in most cases.

  3. "TMB Bank executive vice president Satian Tantanasarit said the difference between the onshore and offshore quotes narrowed due mainly to central-bank relaxation of non-resident controls.

The central bank has begun allowing non-residents with underlying deals made before last December 19 to hedge baht-denominated transactions with local financial institutions without being subject to the 30-per-cent reserve requirement."

I hope it helps answer the question of the original poster.

  4. Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions by the other members!

I do not use DTAC or AIS service, but simply wish to receive email to my True Move based mobile phone.

I run a PC application that sends out an important email alert when something goes wrong on my PC. It is important for me to know the status of my PC application when I am out for dinner or lunch etc. it would be most convenient to receive the email alert via mobile phone.

In fact, I tried sending OUT a test MMS message to my HOTMAIL account from my phone - as suggest in this forum - and it worked. The email received in my HOTMAIL account is using this email address as sender:

    [email protected]

(xxxx is inserted to protect my privacy).

I then tried to send email back to [email protected], but nothing was received on my phone.

I made another trip to the True Move service office in Fortune Tower in Bangkok to ask how to send email to/from my phone.

On the first trip to this office they gave me all kinds of reasons why receive/sending email could not be done, but on this trip I showed them in a live demonstration how to send email to my HOTMAIL account. They suddenly changed their tune, and called in two other tech guys. I suddenly had three True employees working on my problem, and even the branch manager came to join in. He spoke perfect English.

Did you ever hear the joke about how many engineers it takes to screw in a light bulb? Well, I felt a bit like this joke was replayed in real life in front of my eyes in the True Move office in Bangkok. Why they need three guys talkign and doing things on the computer, for 45 minutes to fix my problem!? LOL

In the end, the manager finally understood my request and called some central True Move technician and told me the Email-to-MMS service will be available in the future. It is not eavailable now. Wow...

I told him that AIS has this service now, why does True not have the service? He just smiled, and I am not sure he knows why.

So, there you have it. I am still unable to find out how to use Email-to-MMS service with True Company. ANy more suggestions, or should I switch phone companies? LOL

POP email is not an option for me, as I want to be sound alerted when a MMS message comes into my phone. POP email is working on my phone, but it does not automatically pull new messages, like MMS messages. To receive POP email I have to manually make my phone pull for any new email. This is not exactly what I want.

Here is a nice breakdown of the history of mobile phone companies in Thailand, in case anyone is interested (scroll down to the middle of the page):

  5. In USA, you can easily send email to any SMS mobile phone, using the following format for the main cellular phone carriers:

    T-Mobile: [email protected]

    Virgin Mobile: [email protected]

    Cingular: [email protected]

    Sprint: [email protected]

    Verizon: [email protected]

    Nextel: [email protected]

where phonenumber = your 10 digit phone number

Does anyone know what the format is for sending email to a mobile phone using the True/Orange carrier in Thailand?

I tried contacting the True service department, but they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about.

PS This is a serious request - please hold any flames about the Thailand phone services.

  6. Can someone please tell me this new Thailand law is another weird April 1st joke? --

    I suspect not...

But seriously - regardless if this law will be enforced or not - has George given some thought to how he will respond when a Thailand court orders him to release private registration information about a member on ThaiVisa.com site? --

It is one thing for George (ThaiVisa.com) to be threatened with legal action, but it something else when a court of Thailand "orders" George to release private information - or else be in contempt of court.

I am not a lawyer, but I know that that being in contempt of court is not a good thing. In fact, you can end up being arrested and serving jail time for being in contempt of court.

Would George be a martyr and go to jail to protect the private information about members on this site!? Come on - I think George is more practical than that.

My guess is George will buckle and release confidential member information to the court when ordered by a Thailand court to do so. My guess he is a law-abiding man and will follow the law of the land (Thailand).

I would be interested to know what George thinks about this question.

The answer from George could affect all of us on this board, although we are just nice guys trying to get along and post nice comments about the leaders of Thailand -- right?

  7. Good health, happiness and a long life to His Majesty the King.

Best wishes to the Thailand King and his family on his 78'th birthday.

I also look forward to seeing the King on TV or some other live event. His pictures loook nice, and he also looks like a man of good health.

  8. Do you guys/gals have any suggestions for finding a place (buying, or just renting intially to check things out) to live in Bangkok?

I am hoping to find something within a 1 hour drive from Bangkok? Hua-Hin is too far away, but Bang-Saen might be ok.

Here are some points to guide my search:

    1) I am looking for a long-term, high quality type place (house, condo, intially to rent).

    2) Price or budget is not a major issue. I am not wealthy, but quality of living is important to me. I would also enjoy to know the price that I pay is reasonable and has not been raised because I am a farang (read: I would like to avoid the overpriced Farang areas). Something less than 100,000 baht per month rental, but less than 50,000 would be even better. I have no idea what to expect for a high quality place. Your tips are welcome.

    3) I prefer not to see dirty old shacks with noisy dogs and cats all over the place, when I wake up in the morning. I hear there are some nice gated communities around Bangkok, but I do not know where they are. It is so interesting to see Hi-So Thai people live right next to their super poor brothers and sisters. It is almost weird, but shows they get along, somehow. However, I hope to find a community with wealthy or upper-end Thai people - without too many "squatters" in front of my house.

    4) I am not looking to be located in Central Bangkok, but it would be nice (but not a requirement) to be near one of the BTS/subway stations.

    5) I wish to avoid all the overpriced Farang areas, as I prefer the normal (read: non-bar girl atmosphere) in mainly Thai community areas.

    6) Ideally the location would be next to a lake, river or ocean. I have strong affinity for all things to do with water; fishing, boating and water sports. I know this may raise the price, but that is to be expected.

    7) I do not have any children that need to go to a BKK school, nor do I have any requirement to be close to work or an office.

    Any tips folks?

  9. A 'tight was' is one way to put it...but you might also say he is 'cost conscious'.  Usually when running a business you try to minimize your production costs.  If there is a cheaper pool of labor out there somewhere and you don't utilize it then you will likely be putting yourself at a disadvantage because your competitors probably will.

Very well spoken. Thanks for the help with the wording. It looks a few anti-business thinkers in this forum need to be rebuttled. (smile)

US workers are smart, but too expensive and spoiled (read: production costs are too high.) I know, since I worked as a consultant in the USA for extremly high hourly rates.

Indians are also smart and do good work, but their competitive pricing edge is waning fast.

As example of "cost conscious"; if someone offered a brand new BMW in BKK at a fraction of the sticker price in USA, should I refuse and go and buy a full price BMW in USA instead - for some noble cause? I think most people would agree with me that would be crazy to pay the higher price for the same item.

(In actuality, the BMWs are more than twice the regular price in Thailand, because of the government luxury taxes, but I am just showing this an example of being 'cost conscious' and it is all positive to search for a bargin.)

  10. Can i do it , I am from the u.s. and i want to get out of the U.s.

    Thanks for asking.

US wage earners are too expensive, and sometimes have a spoiled, lazy attitude.

I am looking for talent that is not spoon-fed from childhood and is ready to move up to the next level - given the right opportunity. There are plenty of "have-nots" in Thailand, but I am trying to find someone with a bright attitude, nevertheless. I am not asking for hundereds of students. I am only looking for two people, right now.

I guess you arelady know the asnwer to your question and are asking the US question as joke, but the above is my answer.

  11. lets think now.  how about advertising the jobs as part time??

    Lets think now; (smile)

Hmmm, when I was a college kid the furthest thing from my mind was work. It was all play, study and sleep. But, I may have considered work, if I saw an interesting posting on a school bulletin board, or heard a positive recommendation from a school teacher.

I am hoping to elicit a response from the larger pool of college students that are not already reading the job web sites.

Anyone have any experience with reaching on-campus Thailand college students? Is there a web site for this?

  12. Thanks folks.

To clarify: I know there are many options for locating suitable workers in Thailand - including handing out flyers in Patpong etc (laugh), but I am looking for the most easy and most quick way to find high quality educated talent (read: college students).

For example, can someone recommend a school web site where I can place a classified ad etc? There must be some easy and high-tech way to do this, right?

Thanks for all the tips so far...

  13. Advice Needed from Bangkok Teachers/Students:

What is the best way to locate a couple of English speaking college students in Bangkok, for some part-time work?

I run a California based business and would like to try to hire a couple of Thai college students for some web development work and business developments. They could all work from home, via the Internet when the time is most suitable for them. I expect to hire them as apprentices in the beginning, but I hope the experience gained should be most attractive for some high-achievers in one of the top notch schools in Bangkok.

I hope someone in this teacher's forum has some advice on locating some bright and keen college students. I travel quite a bit to Bangkok, and can easily pay a visit to one or more of the local international Bangkok schools. I will in fact be in Bangkok in November.

I am thinking to place a regular paper posting on a school bulletin board, pay a visit to some local IT teachers, electronic postings on some online bulleting boards etc.

What method do you recommend for finding some suitable students, with a minimum wear on the shoe leather (read: less traveling around Bangkok)?

  14. Hi Guys,

Does anyone know where to take a Compaq 17" LCD monitor for repair in Bangkok?

I imported the monitor from the US, and it has worked fine for me in Thailand for about a year. The LCD screen goes black after a few seconds when powered on.

I took the monitor for repairs in the shop on the top floor of Pantip Plaza, and they told me the cost of repair will be similar to buying a new monitor (about 10-15,000 baht)! The sign in the shop on the wall said computer monitor repairs are about 800-1000 baht...

I find it hard to beleive that a LCD monitor can not be repaired in Thailand and needs to be replaced. The shop in Pantip Plaza even told me they had contacted the Compaq/HP service center of Thailand and was told they needed to import an expensive component from the US.

Does anyone have any experience with how to explore alterntives for fixing this monitor? Or, do I really need to buy a new monitor?

  15. ...It's the nature of the news business, which I've worked in for 20+ years to report mostly bad news. Opening up a newscast with, "Nothing happened today!" doesn't have the same punch!

Eng911, I totally agree. I am glad you brought up the point about the nature of the news business. This is exactly my point.

However, we may not have much control over Google news or CNN reporting, but George is reading our suggestions. With a little casting of a vote, we can make a difference.

How about some news about our gorgeous Thai models, and what they are doing with their lives? (smile) Thai people seem to be most interested in this, as well. Go to Sanook.com - to see perhaps the most visited site in Thailand. You will see mostly good news. Why are Farangs so darn interested in the scum news?

How about some fun news that brightens your day (sanook)?

    14110_007.jpg

I hope there are positive things worth reporting, in this Thailand news section - other than murder, sex offenders and low-life of Farang and Thai societies.

Using "bad news reporting" as an excuse to pull a punch may work for the bean counter (read: accounting manager), but it gets pretty boring and old hat -- real quick.

Eng911, there are a few of use that think "bad news reporting" is not neccesary to keep readers coming back. However, it is nice to hear your frank comments on how the news industry works. (smile)

  16. I disagree with the criticism. I think it is important for such articles to be posted. Thailand ... is also known somewhat for its unusual happenings such as policemen gunning down tourist and the Thai government’s execution of drug dealers.

    ...

I enjoy my emails from Thai Visa and the one that brought me here had just a couple of other links, four to be exact, that were all subdomians of Thai Visa which help generate revenue.

    ...

You guys have no idea how much work is involved in running a successful web site.

I agree that the Google Ads are not a problem on Thai Visa - it is a good thing. I use Google Ads on my own web sites, and the income pays for my children’s education. I love Google and all that they do. A great company and I wish I had bought stock a year ago. (laugh)

I agree that running a web site is a lot of work. I run three successful web sites, so I know.

I agree that bad deeds (read: bad news) of people in Thailand need to be known, but this forum is not the place for it for such junk - in my humble opinion.

Perhaps we should take a vote, George - and let the members decide what they want? We all know "bad news" pulls more traffic, but do we really need it on Thai Visa?

  17. I have said it before and I will say it again,

George .... Do you only post bad things about Thailand ? ...

    ...

Do you only read about the bad stuff?

    ...

I guess I'm close to the ban list already

    ...

I totally concur. You have spoken truth.

The problem is not just with George and Thai Visa. All news media feels that to sell more newspapers, magazine etc, they need to include the emotional attention grabbers of violence. It is sick thinking.

News media reporting is not about integrity and reporting about people "trying to get along". It is about money - under the lame excuse of giving people what they want.

I read in an earlier posting that ThaiVisa made around US $1000 per month (in January 2005) just from the clicks on the Google Ads (around the sides of ThaiVisa web pages). That will easily pay some bills in Thailand!!!

Of course George wants more traffic and people to click his profit making ads. The more bad news the better (read: the more money his web site will make).

I hope George can break the mold and start posting all "good news". I frankly am tired of the news about sex offenders and murders. Spare me this scum of human societies.

ThaiVisa is such a great web site - and I wish we could skip the "bad news". George seems to also to be "nice" white hat kind of guy. I hope we will not be enemies after this posting. (smile)

Are there others wanting to comment, or am I and EmptyMind alone in this thinking?

  18. ...

BTW...can you tell me how I can go to the internet shop my girl might use and install your spyware on the computer she may use just before she uses it, when I live 3315 miles away from her.... :o

Yes, you simply send her a special email with a file attachment. It will automatically install on her computer. The company that sells the spy software will give more information on their web site on how to do this. Keep in mind it will only install on that one computer that she is reading her email on. If she comes back the next day and reads her email on another computer, you are out of luck.

Perhaps an easier way to do all this is to bring your laptop computer and buy a cheap dial-up Internet connection (available in all 711 stores) to check you email while staying at your hotel in Thailand. Then tell your girlfriend - at the right moment when she is bored - that you are going to the store to buy some beer, but she is welcome to use your computer to check her email.

    IMG_2665.jpg

When you come back the key logger program will have tracked her password, websites visited, screenshots of pictures viewed etc.

I am only giving you this advice as an alternative to hiring a more expensive PI. I am not saying you should or should not use this spy software. It is your call.
