  1. Bought from Pix One, right across from Capa Digi in Fortune Town. Picked up a D90 and 18-200mm VRII for about 16k baht less than I could find elsewhere. They send to Nikon Thailand service center if there's an issue. But they do not have high-end gear, or didn't when i was there. Capa is similarly priced and as poster above stated, they disclose warranty info. I went with Pix One because they send to Thailand, not Japan as Capa does in case of warrantied repair.

Do an eBay search on what you want, and the best price will be about what Capa or Pix One offers...

  3. No, there is definitely shudder on the upper floors right by the escalators closest to 2nd Rd. And no, I don't think the building is about to collapse...

Definitely not anytime I've been there. Perhaps your nerve endings are super sensitive and you've felt some vibrations from the new 3D ride they have inside the cinema complex.

Stand on the crosswalk by those escalators on the upper floors, you'll feel it...

  4. Been doing a little X-mas shopping in Central the last couple weeks and definately felt lots of shuddering and movement while eating ice cream on the 4th floor. I have epilepsy and am quite "qualified" to know quivers

    Joking?

I've never felt any sudders or movement in Central and I've been there hundreds of times.

  5. I just bought this exact kit in BKK at Pix One in Fortune Town for 51K a few weeks ago, the D90 body and the 18-200 VR II Nikon lens. This lens covers just about everything you will need, though I picked up a Sigma 10-20mm as well.

The standard kit lens is 18-105mm and it is also available with the 18-55mm too. I'd go with the 18-200mm (which is not the standard kit) unless you want to fumble around with different lenses. Since you aren't getting a full frame, the 18-200 should be good enough.

I think there are other DSLRs that Nikon offers for the beginner, I wouldn't say this is a "beginner" but if you are new to DSLRs you can grow into it.

I contemplated the Canon 7D which is a better camera but in the end I figured it was just too big and bulky to lug around.

So far with the D90, I have no complaints...

  6. More lefty UN crap. By the same logic fruitpickers in Australia are slaves too.

You can't hire people from Myanmar as sailors ? There are a lack of professional Thai fishermen ?

The people who wrote this report are the same people who want to frighten us with global warming and other left wing crap.

Hopefully, you just have a bad sense of humor...

Otherwise you may want to enlighten yourself on the condition of millions of people worldwide, show a bit of compassion, and be thankful you aren't in their position.

  7. Fortune Town in BKK

Capa Digi and Pix One both offer outstanding deals on photo equipment. For example:

    Nikon D90 with 18-200mm VRII ~ 51,500 THB

Canon 5D Mark II body only ~ 79,000 THB

You will definitely save money at either of these shops. The caveat is that the warranties are issued from the shop and any repair may mean a shipment to Japan (shop takes care of that).

  8. Aussiechick, would you please tell the owner to get some plastic bags for takeaway?

I stopped by the other night to get a burger to go. And then was handed a greasy mess in wax paper held together with a rubber band. Not real safe on the motor bike! When I asked for a bag I was told I had to order fries too and then I would get a paper bag. That's just plain stupid.

Sounds like the Thais are already starting to screw up a potential good business. If this guy wants to succeed, he'll have to keep his eye on the game otherwise it will end up as a bag of <deleted>. Remember, Thais cannot do western stuff in the main, they need to be trained. If you don't watch them, they will turn it into a Thai style craphole.

No, this was Justin that handed me the greasy mess. He said I had to get fries too if I wanted a bag. That's nonsense! I'm not cheap, but eating a bacon cheeseburger is already unhealthy, I'm not gong to add fries as well.

Here's a message for Justin - Stop Being So dam_n Cheap With The Paper Bags!

Pissing off new customers is not a good way to get a new business off the ground.

  10. Sailor Restaurant (you have to walk through Sailor Bar) on Soi 8 has very acceptable schnitzel. At 80 baht or whatever, it is a great value. Comes with choice of potato. You won't be disappointed...

  11. The police bashing gets real old. I guess you'd prefer a real police-state like the UK or USA. Go back and then you'll really find something to complain about...

OH YES! ANOTHER ONE OF THE " IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT GO BACK TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY BRIGADE" DON"T YOU JUST LOVE THEM! , UK a police state ?, well at least it has an independent police complaints commission and sets up anti corruption squads to investigate police corruption, I remember when Toxin was primeminister in LOS he actually said that he didn't mind a bit of financial police corruption as long as it didn't involve drugs as the police were poorly paid and needed to supplement their incomes, say's it all really.

If you bothered to read the initial post, it was a complaint regarding illegally parked motorbikes. Not one word about corruption.

  12. Here are some of the best places (in my opinion) for coffee in Pattaya, the list is in no particular order:

    1) Pitini Cafe on Soi Buakhow - originally opened by an Italian-American who sought out the best beans and roaster in Thailand

    2) The new coffee shop on Soi Excite, on the right hand side headed to Soi Buakhow (about half way down) - owned by an enterprising young Thai and his girlfriend. He understands coffee.

    3) The coffee place on the ground floor of Central, on the beach frontage area just in front of the elevators

Depending upon your taste, you may have to request less water if you are drinking espresso.

Latte is a coffee drink, it has a full shot of espresso in it. It's not just coffee flavored.

  13. It's clear that HomePro Pattaya seem never to have heard of the Consumer Case Procedure Act (CCPA) nor the Thai Civil and Commercial Code - laws that offer some protection to us consumers. Blank looks and silence eminates from good English speaking management. I am planning to have a legal go at them for their straightforward dismissal of my legitimate claims against them for supplying defective products (goods not fit for purpose) and their misleading statements. I find this store's arrogance to be unbelievable. If you have any recent & similar issues with them or any helpful comments I'd be pleased to receive them. I realise it will be a waste of time but hey, I'm retired.

PS - I have searched TV and reviewed the many other previous HomePro threads.

PPS - how do i start a unique HomePro Forum - it would save others having to search back? :)

I found HomePro's customer service to be outstanding. Last year I bought an air conditioner and it stopped working. I no longer had the receipt, my name did not show in their records, and I had also lost the phone (number) that I used when I made the purchase so they couldn't look that up in the database either. To make a long story short I supplied them with the serial number of the unit and a couple days later it was fixed.

It would have been very easy for them to give poor service, but they didn't.

  14. Thanks for the heads-up on this place. Is it open during the daytime do you know? Thanks! :)

Yes, they are open in the daytime. I think they open at 2PM.

Let us know what you think...

    ----------

I'll try the Volterra pizza, been there a few times before. Only thing I don't like is the neighborhood. Last time there, violence almost erupted right outside as a result of skirmish almost gone out of control by local gangs of young boys.

  15. Thanks for posting this update kicking,

    Just to clarify:

Did you have many previous 60 day visa stamps in your passport? With all the hoo-haa about what potential questioning the thai authorities may quiz you with, I take it this wasn't happening?

    Thanks !

My passport was brand new with only a transferred Non Imm O visa in it. I'm not sure it would have mattered.

  16. In short, Cambodia is not an ideal place to get a visa. In retrospect I should have gone to Lao. Alternatively, it is possible to fly in the AM and immediately drop off the passport to an agent and then pick it up at 6PM and then fly out the same day on the last Bangkok Air flight which departs at 8 PM.

Hopefully, this is useful info to somebody.

It is useful and interesting. I don't know why Lao would be better, from Bangkok. There are also options bantered about the "agent" taking the passports from PoiPet(you get there by bus/van) to Phnom Penh and you simply wait there in a Casino hotel. There was a time not long ago Phnom Penh didn't issue tourist visas at all for some reason. The agent/agency part is the most important in my opinion. There is a "way" some people still avoid leaving the comfort of their condo or suite at the Marriott in Bangkok. It cost money of course. The most recent figure bantered about is 15,000.baht for a valid 60day tourist visa.

The only reason Lao would be better is because they issue a double entry Tourist Visa, so you get 2 x 60 days plus extensions. I didn't want to sit around at a casino hotel for two days with nothing to do so that's why I opted for Phnom Penh. Not much to do here either unless it's your first time, but at least there are some restaurants and of course, the internet.

Lopburi3 is right, getting a visa without actually leaving the country is very dangerous and would most likely result in dire consequences.
