  1. .........One need only look at the current abortion fiasco to understand what happens when political or personal views interfere with decisions that should be focused on health.

Which particular "current abortion fiasco" are you talking about, GK?

Abortions in registered clinics have been legal in Thailand under Section 305 of the Thai Criminal Code for over four years and none of the many abortions carried out in those clinics have been challenged legally or ethically. The only problem is that far too few Thais are aware of the current legal position so many still risk using illegal and dangerous back street "clinics" unnecessarily. Again, it all boils down to education rather than legislation.

I think he means the 2,000 fetuses found at a temple.

  2. This is an absolute scandal. And just when the government trumpeted out loud that they are fiercely determined to fight corruption, they are not even able to file a case on time, that's 20 years after it happened! 20 years! Incompetence or worse?

The temple wanted the ownership of the land to be transferred, but Sanoh, then overseeing the Land Department refused the transfer and instead grabbed it for himself by first ordering a transfer to a foundation, which sold it to Alpine Real Estate and Alpine Golf.

He, his wife and his brother then bought 450,000 shares worth 45 million THB of these two Alpine companies and sold it to SC Asset Co. for 500 million, a company which belongs to ... you guessed it, Thaksin. Net profit for Sanoh: 455 million THB

What amazes me most is the total lack of shame these people display. :bah:

Not only that, they could have filed under a different law which has no statute of limitations. Much more than meets the eye in this case. Politicians change their colours & allegiances so much there are no doubt some in the current government who benefited.

  3. The old generation will continue to rule with their antiquated ways for a while. Just look at the movie censorship, it is positively Victorian & Barbara castle would be proud. In my early years in this country I watched the occasional beauty contest on TV & was astonished to see beautiful women made to wear their hair all in the same style, the one which many middle aged & elderly women have, done up in a bun on the top. When the camera panned over the judges one could see why.

Once women achieve better rights then the GLTs might stand a chance but even today women have far fewer rights than men.

  4. "The charge was based on Section 148 of the Criminal Procedure Code, not the law governing criminal procedures against political office holders, which has no statutory limitation." Luck had nothing to do with it. Incompetence on the part of the prosecuting team had everything to do with it unless it was all done for show. Remember SC Asset Co. owned by a well known ex premier. They bought the land from Mr Snoh's company for 500 million.

"The Land Department was then urged to revoke ownership title deeds issued to the golf course owners and home-buyers, but the latter refused to give in.

The department's order for revocation was suspended by Yongyuth Vichaidit, then acting interior permanent secretary and now leader of the opposition Puea Thai Party."

This issue surfaced quite a while ago yet even the current government did not see fit to act on it in the proper manner or time frame although it was a prefect opportunity to go after some of the dreaded opposition. Perhaps some in their coalition purchased properties there when it was developed.

  5. Perhaps this is another loss of face thing which can only be resolved with a gun. I wonder how many of these happen on a yearly basis. Lose a fight or be humiliated in front of others & the only way to regain manhood is to cowardly shoot the perpetrator thus destroying not only one life but many other lives in the process. Immature & a serious lack of imagination at play here.

  6. Except it only came on again after "The Event" which I was planning to watch.

It's repeated at 12.00 today (Thai time).

    Universal schedule

Thanks, I will keep it in my bookmarks. I did not see your post in time but I have just finished watching it after I downloaded it this morning.

  7. You cannot trust some of the speed tests. A group in Phuket verified this by checking the ping to San Fransisco & found it was travelling faster than the speed of light! So some ISPs are hijacking the test & routing it to Bangkok in order to show, wrongly, that you are getting a high download speed.

  8. I want to sign up for KPP cable. Anyone knows where is their office?

On the same side as Royal Phuket City Hotel but a couple of hundred yards further on. I reckon their programming is better than Phuket Cable. You can get it in more than one room, an extra fee for installment but monthly fee the same as a single connection.

  9. Where is Surf n Turf mate?

On the same side & just before the turn off into Boat Lagoon. They open at midday but when I went at about 12.15 they were still setting up so maybe best to go at 1 or later.

  10. After reading the Burger article in the Gazzete i found Skippers RPYC and Wine Connection at chalong to be the best

    research ongoing

Don't forhet to include Surf n Turf in your research as I have found this to be the best so far.

  11. Why all the ballyhoo about chips, fries, pommes frittes? This thread is about burgers not what comes with them although a comment stating good, bad or indifferent about what comes with the burger is welcome as it may swing some whether or not to try a particular place.

I have to agree with you 100%. I just eat burgers, the meat being good and the bun being good is important! I could care less about a fried potato or whatever you choose to call it. Yet another thread that has been derailed...

You may enjoy the burger from Surf n Turf then. It is big & tasty enough to be enjoyed on its own. 230 grams of beef cooked on a BBQ grill & they use proper lettuce, not the limp variety. Tried it for the 1st time yesterday & now consider this the best burger out of the ones I have tried on Phuket.

  12. someone nearby the accident is saying on the gazette comments that it was the truck that pulled into oncoming traffic to avoid another accident. That would explain the fleeing. The 2 girls were on their way to work at a hotel according to the witness in the gazette comments.

To me this seems more likely as the pickup hit the sign on the opposite side of the road.

  13. Why all the ballyhoo about chips, fries, pommes frittes? This thread is about burgers not what comes with them although a comment stating good, bad or indifferent about what comes with the burger is welcome as it may swing some whether or not to try a particular place.

  14. Whoever is controlling the roads are not doing a very good job on maintenance. Bypass road all the way through to Central, with the section from Tesco to Central likely the heaviest traffic road in Phuket, is getting pretty bad with some mean pot holes appearing in amongst all the other surface cracks. Road connecting the two Chao Fas running from near Promphan to the school is disgraceful. I have no idea of the average lifespan of a "well constructed" road although it must depend on the daily vehicle numbers especially the heavy ones.

There does not appear to be any new roads under construction or planned. The one from the Honda showroom through to Kathu could be a great shortcut except for when there is a bottleneck by the university. Traffic flow through Phuket Town will see gridlock before long as all the roads are too narrow. The only bright spot was the road widening near Poonpol Plaza which took years to do. I realise land issues compound this problem such as the ludicrous situation with the mini tank farm on Wichit Road.

Have you been through Karon/Kata recently? Yes, they are working on the roads but it is taking a very long time and typically they work on the Beach Road and Patak Road at the same time!

The worst place I know for potholes at the moment is the road in front of Simon Cabaret which gets worse every time I drive past.

Add to that the ugly construction work going on everywhere right now and the whole of the southern and central part of the island looks a total mess; just in time to welcome the high season tourists!

It won't get any better for a while if the rain continues either.

I don't normally traverse the roads you mentioned but reminds me of days gone by when every year in Patong they would redo the footpaths. Piles of paving stones everywhere right at the start of the high season.

  15. fish and chips.gif

    <deleted>?

The chips part in fish n chips are also known as french fries. It can just as well be called burger & chips rather than burger & fries.

  16. Years ago warfarin was easy to buy but not so now. You could try the pharmacy at Supercheap, failing that go to Mission Hospital, see the doctor, as the drugs are likely cheaper there.

  17. Still reckon the bacon cheeseburger at Nikitas for 200 Bt is pretty dam.n tasty (though they are a bit stingy with the french fries).

I hear they do good fish n chips as well.
