  1. Re: Chou Dou <deleted>

I checked with my wife, that seems a Cantonese pronounciation. Chou means "stinky". Dou <deleted> means "bean curd". The first picture looks like it too.

If it's in Mandarin, Chou may mean "deep-fried". The second picture looks it.

The third picture looks fermented bean curd. You take one little cube in your mouth you will be salted to death.

CM makes good bean curd. In fact, inside the talaat (fresh market) next to Rimping has good bean curd for B15 a big block. We buy it all the time to drop them into soups, fry with ground pork and shrimp - similar to what in the States called shrimp with lobster sauce. One time, I thought about making it myself since we can't find any decent bean curd in Bangkok; it always has this smoke taste in it!

"Oil Fried Devils" (bpa tong ko) , sarapao tawt, sankayaa and soya bean milk from 6am along Soi Udompon at the Don Lamy Yi market .

  2. You got a stomach bug.

From somewhere,it could of been a momentary lack of hygiene on your part.

But you decide to blame,Thai standards.

    Very Farang,of you.

What about the 100+ chinese who were airlifted to bkk hospital with food poisoning the other day and are blaming the tour company, were they acting like "farang" as well?

    Silly....

Do you have a link for this story? Really hard for me to imagine 100+ people being airlifted to Bangkok.

  3. I managed to take a walk today that I have not been physically up to for a month. Also got to stop for my favorite breakfast at Sunnui's.

The wife located a case of 1.45 mml bottles of Pepsi Max.

Got to admit I did get a little frustrated trying to find a web page for Nok Air. Just means I will have to stop into their office when we go to see GI Joe. That makes a guaranteed good day for later this week.

Yes I stopped in to AIS and talked about my air stick disconnecting when ever it felt like it (I can reconnect right away) but it is a nuscience. I was told that they are working on the equipment and it will all be sorted out in May. I choose to believe it.

All in all a good day.

  4. Monkala Clinic in the Old City... Best Chinese medical treatment I've ever experienced. Tender, caring, gentle and most of all knowledgable. Man and wife doctors, and both always get rave reviews. I've been treated by the woman half a dozen times over the years, and she's always solved my problems.

I second Mungkala and personally prefer the woman practitioner.

  5. I like the old outlet on SriDonchai Rd. Prefer the non airconditioned area cos if you dawdle the food cools a little too quickly in airconditioning. And the elderly auntie, wife of the founder, wanders around making sure you don't order too much!!

And I concur Lawrence, great Teochew grub.

  6. Thaipauly With such a closed up mind, I represent all 1.3 billion of them and thank you for deciding not meeting them any further and changing their minds to engage the west further. Fear of understanding is regrettable, intolerance is best left to die alone. I encourage the rest not to make snap judgements based on one visit / area and interaction with one group. It would be sad not to interact with the world because of one bad call irregardless of the nationality or race.

Peace bro. Your karma will roll over his dogma.

  7. Actually somtam is orginal fusion food, taking ingredients from Central America and adding pretty much anything you want..... can be made from almost any veg, cucumber is good,, palm heart is real good.

I like fruit somtam. The other stuff is nasty, especially the somtam Lao.

Somtam Lao is my favorite. Love it. All a matter of personal taste preference is all.

Hard to imagine. Never seen a farang who could eat it. Smells like rotten fish. Tastes worse.

    How about Casu Marzu?

"Derived from Pecorino, casu marzu goes beyond typical fermentation to a stage most would consider decomposition, brought about by the digestive action of the larvae of the cheese fly Piophila casei. These larvae are deliberately introduced to the cheese, promoting an advanced level of fermentation and breaking down of the cheese's fats. The texture of the cheese becomes very soft, with some liquid (called lagrima, from Latin for "tear") seeping out. The larvae themselves appear as translucent white worms, about 8 millimetres (0.3 in) long.[1] When disturbed, the larvae can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in). Some people clear the larvae from the cheese before consuming while others do not."

  8. Oishi doesn't cut it AFAIC. Fuji is much better, but priced accordingly. Haven't found a "great" place - isn't there a Japanese expat community in CM?

There is a HUGE Japanese expat community in Chiang Mai, but they tend to stay within their own circles. Most (but not all) are families of Middle Management Japanese workers at the factories outside of town, and when the women go out during the day, it's usually as a group in the factory-provided van.

Much of the Japanese expat community goes to Sakura behind the Amora Hotel as it is really cheap, but no atmosphere at all and only a few sushi/sashimi dishes. However, there are a number of sushi places that are good for the money and if you are willing to pay for better portions and quality, I'm sure that they can provide.

I don't know if it's still open (haven't been there in a while myself) but the very best Japanese food we (my Japanese wife and I) found was in 'Akamon' inside Hillside Plaza 4. We used to eat there several times a month, and never saw any westerners OR Thais in there, only Japanese. It was never crowded, had delicious foods, and the sushi was served the way we get it in Japan. But you pay for all this. It's not cheap. But it's worth every penny to have 'real' Japanese foods served Japanese style.

INMHO if Akamon was to your left, on the ground floor, its gone away.

  9. seems like a lot of air traffic yesterday, military helicopters and planes in the San Sai area and when I drove thru Area 41 there were lots of helicopters getting ready to take off, more than I've ever seen before. Thought might just be an exercise but now that I read this news perhaps related.

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – A large-scale military training exercise began Monday in northern Thailand involving 13,000 personnel from the United States and six Asian countries — Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the host nation.

Adm. Samuel Locklear, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, said at an opening ceremony held in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai that the annual exercise is a demonstration of the commitment of the participating countries to pursuing peace and stability in the region.......

  12. This may be slightly off topic for whicjh I apologise.

Recently labourer's working on unionized building sites in Australia were starting at THB 3,750,000 per annum (AUD125,000) or so the press reported. A Phd in Science with 3 year post-doc would struggle to pass AUD 100,000.
