  1. ... Then west isn't bankrupt, It's just priced itself out of the market.

The UK benefits from the influence of its location on American shirt tails.

I actually take offence to tripe like that; have you been drinking?

You've clearly gone native, loaded, but I don't get all this blowing of smoke up Asian's bottom? Diss your own all you like, they'll never consider you one of theirs and would sooner have you leave your cash and eff off back home despite what you think they think of you. On China, I'll consider them rich the day they feed and clothe ALL their people and stop treating them as sheep. Their meteoric rise is simply a product of the West & co buying up all their cheap tat (churned out by lemmings for peanuts) and the warning is all about face.

You completely missed my point. I don't want to be Chinese. To accuse me of that is just a display of ignorance. I pointed out, with Thai government statistics, that the Ford investment of $500 million is around 2% of the total Chinese investment of $24 billion in Thailand in 2011. They are far more important to Thailand than the USA, UK and Australia together. You may not like it, but you need to get use to it.

However, If you're talking about exploitation, can you tell me why the majority of US citizens cannot afford basic medial treatments. The Thais can afford them. The Chinese can. However, Americans can't. America can afford to send its uneducated youth across the world to kill and die in the name of 'democracy' though.

Gentlemen or should I say Brothers

    East.....West..... just semantics

  2. Thing is, it all comes down to 'no desire', which is their doctrine. Agree this guy is a tourist (ie, not a lifer), though many are clearly weak and retain the desire of any man. With that, what is the point?

To control and manipulate the masses.

Methinks Buddhism teaches you to control yourself. Nothing about others.

And a man wearing robes does not a monk make.

  3. Bondi. Shrimp on the barbie. Sausage-sizzle. A few more snags. A Coke - or three. Strains of "Waltzing Matilda" and "Advance Australia Fair". A slog with a cricket bat. Aeroguard. Hazy-lazy. Another slap of sun-tan lotion. Feed the flies. Aaahh!

Anyone think of some more things to do for Australia day that you can't 'cause you're here in Chiang Mai.

Maybe some Aussies could arrange a similar get-together right here in Chiang Mai for next year

Cheers - and Happy Australia Day all you Vegemite chompers from the Land Down-Under !

  4. Ate Roast Salt Beef sandwiches 30 years ago in Woodgreen, North London. Have spent 30 years looking in vain!

Salt beef is boiled not roasted ;) you didn't need to wait 30 years, just a short trip to Stamford Hill would have done the job

Not so easy from Down Under

  5. paid 40 million to the boys family? Well if it's true, I can only say there's one born every minute, but not always with 40 M Bht.

    One born every minute indeed!

I am Amazed this thread has got so far without someone pointing out that same-sex marriage is not recognised in Thailand. (And quite rightly in my view, but that's another aspect which will doubtless get me 'struck off' for a week. Again. Ah well).

This love-struck Aussie MAY have gone through all the tricks with the doting family, threads round the wrists and other paraphernalia and people I mustn't mention, but he hasn't been to the Amphur office to legally ratify the marriage, has he?

'Cos if he tried, he'd be laughed out of the place by local officials needing breathing apparatus to cope with their mirth.

A farang gay man who IS a friend of mine is planning to wed his (mature) Thai partner properly, with a legal status marriage, in a place that recognises these things. Malaysia, I think. And without all this ballyhoo and bally silly splash of cash.

    Not Malaysia

LGBT rights are not recognized in Malaysia. The nation retains its colonial era penal code criminalizing sodomy. Social attitudes towards the LGBT community are also shaped by Islam, the official religion in Malaysia.

  6. Thanks for the info Suradit!

Actually, I am still in the US but I intend on coming over to Chiang Mai in couple of weeks on a 'retirement trial' basis hence, the question.

Now that you have mentioned insurance, what exactly would you recommend for a single newbie retiree like me to get? What's insurance is possible and/or recommended? Website?

PS: I take exactly what you take! Thanks god I don't take any other drugs though.

    Rgds,

    Zan.

I have a member card at Fascino's and their prices are less expensive than at Pharma Choice on most medications.

I get Lipitor 20 mg strip of 10 tablets @ Baht 613 from Fascino's in Pattaya.

As for insurance, if you don't already have insurance, I doubt you can expect to start insurance now that would immediately cover a pre-existing condition.

How old are you? If under 65, there are many choices. There are perhaps 75 or more insurance companies in Thailand that you can purchase various levels of coverage from. Some are very basic, others aimed at the ex-pat and are much more expensive. If you are 65 then you are out of luck.

As for the Lipitor, Dr. Morgan's clinic has the (real) generic for much less than the Pfeizer brand. I think 10 X 20 mg. tablets are around 400 Baht. I used to take 20 mg. but she lowered the dose to 10 mg. 10 X 10 mg. cost 200 Baht.

What happens when you are over 65?

  7. I am very sad to hear of the great distress the flood have caused so many people in Chiangmai. But it was great to see the spirit is strong. I saw this small convoy sailing down the Changklan River on Thursday while trapped in a hotel. Meanwhile I bolted to the hills. Am thinking of returning to thr Night Bizzare on Thurday the 6th any advice appreciated.

I find this site very useful to locate and communicate directions, a skill light years beyond me.

    Tracked down Chanchao's blog.

  9. I don't know the restaurant, but lots of good Chiang Mai sausage around - who said this place was 'the best'?

Sorry if my post sounded challenging. I rephrase. "the lady innkeeper thought this guy was the best - in her opinion". She went on at great lengths to explain the significance of the name "Menrai". The best I could make out it was along the Ping River approaching the Holiday Inn.

I recall reading a reference to this on a blog by ChanChao some years ago.

  10. Hope I got it right.

When I was last in Chiangmai I was told this establishment sold the best sai ua. However we had some difficulty with the location. Could a member give me some explicit directions as I'm map challenged (among other various disabilities)

    Many Thanks

  11. Le Meridien has an excellent gym. I wonder if it's only for hotel guests?

To my mind "excellent" means a wide variety of free weights and appropriate benches, weight machines, and cardio equipment (stationary bikes, treadmills, elliptical/crosstrainers, etc.) all well maintained and sufficient in number so a customer can go to the gym at any time and go through the workout of their choice without waiting for equipment. Does Le Meridien meet this standard? If so, do you have any price information?

Perhaps it may not meet all your criteria. It has, from memory, 3 each of the stationary bikes, treadmills, elliptical/crosstrainers. Probably 6 nautilius type machines and a 12 ft weight rack. Its open 24 x 7 but attendants are only available 1/2 that time. Maintenance and cleanliness are very good. There is a 25 metre lap pool. One thing though the temperature in the gym is a little on the high side.

  12. Learn to treat food and drink with contempt. The problem with diets is they tend to be a justification to eat. Eat little and enjoy the taste what little you eat , exercise a lot, as much as your physician will let you and a bit more. Take your medication faithfully if you have been prescribed. And accept that this is for the rest of your life. There more to life than food so its not too onerous a regime. Give up smoking. Meditation and a Buddhist way of life is a pretty good regimen to follow.
