  1. NEW YORK (AP) — That the death of Tyre Nichols — young, Black, just trying to get home — came at the hands of Memphis police officers was a familiar refrain in the nation’s seemingly endless lamentation of racism and police brutality aimed at Black people. This time around, though, it was five Black officers who were fired and charged with second-degree murder in the horrifying Jan. 7 beating that was caught on video and led to Nichols’ death in a hospital bed three days later. But the fact that Black officers killed a Black man didn’t remove racism from the situation. https://apnews.com/article/law-enforcement-us-news-tyre-nichols-memphis-racism-c36c88bdca39d801eee9bd247fcc0c71
  2. Tesla founder Elon Musk has been cleared of wrongdoing for a tweet in which he said he had "funding secured" to take the electric carmaker private. Mr Musk faced a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of Tesla shareholders who argued he misled them with his posts in August 2018. The proposed $72bn (£60bn) buyout never materialised. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64520157
  3. When Marjorie Taylor Greene was elected to America’s House of Representatives in 2020, she became one of the most visible of a wave of extremists to enter the Republican party whose often bizarre utterings stretched the bounds of what had previously been the norm of US politics. The Georgian congresswoman, who has suggested Jewish space lasers are responsible for wildfires, speculated whether 9/11 was a hoax and supported the QAnon conspiracy theory, was part of a new wave of Trumpian Republicans and was mocked, ridiculed and reviled in equal measure – including by some in her own party. But in 2023, Greene is now firmly on her way to becoming one of the senior figures in the Republican party. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/28/marjorie-taylor-greene-kevin-mccarthy-republicans-house-committee

  7. A grand jury is hearing evidence in New York over former U.S. president Donald Trump's role in hush-money payments to adult film performer Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. A grand jury could lay the groundwork for possible criminal charges against Trump by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. This would be a stunning development — no former president has been indicted for criminal conduct. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/ny-grand-jury-trump-1.6731596

  13. Lawyers for Hunter Biden sent letters Wednesday requesting investigations into allies of former President Donald Trump who they say trafficked in stolen information from his laptop — a dramatic shift in strategy for the president’s son after years of GOP attacks. Among the letters, which were obtained by NBC News, was one sent Wednesday to the Justice Department's National Security Division asking for an investigation into "individuals for whom there is considerable reason to believe violated various federal laws in accessing, copying, manipulating, and/or disseminating Mr. Biden’s personal computer data," including Rudy Giuliani, who was Trump's lawyer at the time. Hunter Biden lawyers wrote a similar letter to the Delaware attorney general's office, requesting a probe into the same people for allegedly violating "various Delaware laws" in accessing Biden's information from what Trump has called "the laptop from hell." https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/joe-biden/hunter-biden-asks-criminal-probe-trump-allies-laptop-rcna68703

  22. Control of the House remains on a knife’s edge. Here’s how it could break There are 10 seats still in doubt. And both parties have a shot “Election Week” is coming to a close with control of the House still up for grabs. As of Saturday night, 21 congressional races remain unresolved. Of those, 10 are truly undecided, with neither party a significant favorite to win once all the votes are tallied. Democrats have been narrowing the gap in many of those races over the past 24 hours. The Associated Press called seven new congressional races on Friday and three on Saturday — all for Democrats. (more) https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/12/house-midterm-elections-00066615
