Media organizations demand Jan. 6 videos McCarthy shared with Fox News' Tucker Carlson A group of media organizations, including CBS News, is demanding access to a tranche of surveillance and police videos from the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol that U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy provided to Fox News host Tucker Carlson. In a letter to congressional leadership Friday, the media companies argue the footage McCarthy allowed Carlson and Fox News to access should be made available to other media groups. The letter was sent on behalf of CBS News, CNN, Politico, ProPublica ABC, Axios, Advance, Scripps, the Los Angeles Times, and Gannett. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/media-organizations-demand-jan-6-videos-mccarthy-shared-fox-news-tucker-carlson/

DeSantis leads Trump in California matchup

Longtime Trump backers flock to DeSantis event The group of Ron DeSantis’ top donors and supporters gathering in Palm Beach, Fla., this weekend includes some longtime backers of former President Donald Trump. The Florida governor’s three-day retreat at the Four Seasons hotel — just four miles down the road from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate — kicked off Friday evening with a cocktail reception and dinner for the approximately 150 attendees. The event, billed as a celebration of the “Florida blueprint,” precedes a likely DeSantis presidential bid that would pit him against Trump. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/02/25/trump-desantis-event-00084447 -
California’s large Republican electorate prefers Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to former President Donald Trump, according to a new poll that captures shifting conservative preferences ahead of a contested presidential primary. The Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll released Friday suggests many conservatives are ready to move on from the former president and affirms that DeSantis would be the Republican most likely to draw voters from Trump. The tally also contains grim news for Vice President Kamala Harris as voters in the Democrat’s home state remain tepid on her presidential prospects. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/02/24/desantis-leads-trump-california-matchup-00084356

Sydney has come alive for the 45th annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade — a history-making event that will see an Australian prime minister march with Australia’s LGBTI community for the first time. More than 75,000 people are lining the streets for the largest celebration of the event in history. The PM Anthony Albanese revealed to reporters earlier what he’ll be wearing for the parade. https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/fashion/sydney-mardi-gras-parade-underway-albanese-becomes-first-pm-to-march/news-story/721fa51f451837cb114547a95b89c6b2

Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday called the lawsuit challenging the FDA's approval of abortion pills an "attack on the very foundation of our public health system." The big picture: The vice president's comments come ahead of a ruling —expected as soon as today — that could end access nationwide to mifepristone, a drug used for medication abortions and miscarriage care, potentially making this the most important abortion ruling since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Mifepristone is taken alongside misoprostol to end a pregnancy during the first 10 weeks gestation. https://www.axios.com/2023/02/24/kamala-harris-abortion-pills-public-health

Special counsel seeks to compel Mike Pence to testify about January 6 The special counsel investigating Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election issued a motion to compel testimony from Mike Pence in recent days – after the Trump legal team sought to block his appearance on executive privilege grounds, sources familiar with the matter said. The compulsion motion against Pence marks a pre-emptive move by the special counsel to rebut the executive privilege arguments before Pence had even made an appearance before the federal grand jury in Washington DC pursuant to a subpoena issued last month, the sources said. While Pence has suggested he would contest the subpoena, the Guardian has previously reported that is understood to involve him at least appearing before the grand jury and asserting the so-called speech or debate protection for congressional officials to specific questions. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/feb/23/mike-pence-january-6-motion-compel-testimony

UN secretary general António Guterres has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as an “affront to our collective conscience” as the 193-member General assembly meets ahead of a vote that the US said would “go down in history.” Speaking on Wednesday during a special session of the general assembly, Guterres called the anniversary of Moscow’s attack “a grim milestone for the people of Ukraine and for the international community.” As fighting raged in Ukraine, the general assembly debated a motion backed by Kyiv and its allies calling for a “just and lasting peace.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/23/un-chief-condemns-russian-invasion-ukraine-united-nations-assembly-vote-peace-motion

A law firm that represented former Donald Trump strategist Steve Bannon during his fight against a subpoena from the House January 6 committee and other cases is suing Bannon for nearly $500,000 in unpaid legal bills. The lawsuit states that Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP worked for Bannon from November 2020 through November 2022 and represented him on several high-profile cases, including investigations into Bannon’s crowdfunding border-wall effort and the subpoena from the House select committee investigating the US Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. “This action simply seeks payment of an outstanding bill for legal services rendered in the amount of $480,487.87 in addition to scheduling a hearing on the reasonable attorneys’ fees DHC is contractually entitled to as the prevailing party in this litigation,” the law firm wrote. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/02/22/politics/steve-bannon-lawyers-sue/index.html
