A school superintendent has resigned after an eight-year-old found his gun unattended in a bathroom. The firearm was discovered in Rising Star Elementary School in Texas - and many parents were furious because they were not informed about the incident when it happened. The boy told his teacher about the gun, prompting the teacher to send him and another student to "go and be sure that's what he found". https://news.sky.com/story/school-boss-resigns-after-eight-year-old-boy-finds-his-gun-unattended-in-a-bathroom-12816926

According to latest UN human rights office (OHCHR) data, at least 8,000 non-combatants have been confirmed killed – with nearly 13,300 injured - since the Russian invasion on 24 February last year. The true number is likely to be substantially higher, OHCHR staff have repeated on many occasions. In a statement deploring the human cost of the conflict, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that every day that violations of international human rights and humanitarian law continue, “it becomes harder and harder to find a way forward through mounting suffering and destruction, towards peace”. https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/02/1133737

A leaked internal strategy document from Vladimir Putin’s executive office and obtained by Yahoo News lays out a detailed plan on how Russia plans to take full control over neighboring Belarus in the next decade under the pretext of a merger between the two countries. The document outlines in granular detail a creeping annexation by political, economic and military means of an independent but illiberal European nation by Russia, which is an active state of war in its bid to conquer Ukraine through overwhelming force. “Russia’s goals with regards to Belarus are the same as with Ukraine,” Michael Carpenter, the U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, told Yahoo News. https://news.yahoo.com/russia-belarus-strategy-document-230035184.html

Critics are accusing the British publisher of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s books of censorship after it removed colorful language from works such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Matilda” to make them more acceptable to modern readers. A review of new editions of Dahl’s books now available in bookstores shows that some passages relating to weight, mental health, gender and race were altered. The changes made by Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Random House, first were reported by Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/critics-reject-roald-dahl-books-censorship-97322799

image source Sean Penn said the US has to accept “a level of shame” for not helping Ukraine with weapons supplies quicker at the premiere of his documentary about president Voldoymyr Zelenskiy and the war. Speaking after the screening in Berlin on Friday night, the Hollywood A-lister said he believed the war in Ukraine was one that the west cannot ultimately afford to see Kyiv lose, an argument that underpins the new film, Superpower. “If you imagine what it is if Russia wins, we are all <deleted>. Just dead <deleted>,” Penn said, “we are already as Americans, I can say, we are having to take on board a level of shame for not having scaled up sooner with the weapons. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/feb/18/sean-penn-says-us-has-to-accept-level-of-shame-for-not-arming-ukraine-faster

The US has recently begun seeing “disturbing” trendlines in China’s support for Russia’s military and there are signs that Beijing wants to “creep up to the line” of providing lethal military aid to Russia without getting caught, US officials familiar with the intelligence told CNN. The officials would not describe in detail what intelligence the US has seen suggesting a recent shift in China’s posture, but said US officials have been concerned enough that they have shared the intelligence with allies and partners at the Munich Security Conference over the last several days. Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised the issue when he met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on Saturday on the sidelines of the conference, officials said. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/02/18/politics/us-warns-allies-china-russia/index.html

Controversial influencer Andrew Tate has threatened legal action against at least one of the women making rape and human trafficking claims against him. Lawyers for the woman in the US say a "cease-and-desist" letter was sent by a US law firm in December, on behalf of Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan. The letter threatened to sue the woman and her parents for $300m (£249m) if she did not retract her statements. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64683923

image source A French court on Friday found three members of a far-right group guilty of conspiring to prepare an act of terrorism against President Emmanuel Macron in 2018. The Paris criminal court handed the three men sentences ranging from three to four years in jail, with one to two years suspended each, saying it found a causal link between preparations they were involved in and the violent project to kill the French president. Prosecutors have said members of the group planned to attack the president with a knife during a World War One memorial ceremony in eastern France in November 2018. They were also suspected of plotting attacks against mosques and migrants.

European powers on Friday vowed to intensify support for Ukraine as it battles to repel Russia, with France's president underlining at a major security conference that the time was not ripe for talks with Moscow. Days ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia sending its forces into Ukraine, Moscow chalked up a small gain in its grinding offensive. The head of Russian mercenary group Wagner claimed the capture of a village near Bakhmut -- the eastern city that is the scene of the longest and bloodiest battle of Moscow's offensive. https://sg.news.yahoo.com/european-allies-vow-more-support-195905369.html
