  1. Good idea:

On another subject, we have two large fishing lakes. I would like to donate some of the fish to charity organizations that are not religon related if you know any let me know.

Not sure because a lot of these charities are infested with these religious freaks but hopefully someone will come up with one.

    well done :o

If anyone did manage to open a bank account recently, pls advice which bank did u try to open and with internet banking account also.

    Cheers

Strictly speaking they are correct and they are following the law but they don't always apply these rules.

Keep trying and you will meet a friendly bank or take someone with you that already has an account and can introduce you. Happy banking.

  3. Looks like Joel was right about the shops in Tachilek.

    http://www.chiangmai-mail.com/current/news.Tachilek vendors close up shops

Sorry the link no longer works.

    n5-236.jpg

Business as usual last Thursday at the border crossing between Mae Sai and Tachilek.

Many traders on the border town of Tachilek in Myanmar have closed up shop amid fears that soldiers from the Myanmar army have begun to arrest owners who deal in illegal DVD and CD sales.

Many of the vendors in Tachilek are members of the Red Wa tribe and have been allowed under an agreement with the Myanmar government to sell their wares provided they do not carry or store weapons.

This past week reports surfaced that several vendors had been arrested by soldiers from the Myanmar government which prompted the closing of many shops, notorious for plying illegal goods, mostly from China.

Reports (that could not be verified by the Chiangmai Mail) state that members of the Red Wa army have been purchasing weaponry and stocking up on food provisions in preparation for future skirmishes with the Myanmar military.

The government of Myanmar had ordered the ethnic Red Wa members to volunteer as soldiers but this call has fallen on deaf ears. (CMM Reporters)

I suppose the Wiang Inn is a few metres closer but as regards comfort, I wouldn't know since I have been living in my home here for over 6 years and the wife still hasn't kicked me out.

I think the Wiang Inn would be the better place, but the Diamond Park Inn is good value for money at around 850 baht.

  5. You really have to give credit where it is due. The Myanmar border checkpoints

are certainly looking more promising. It's a flat 500 baht fee, no corruption money,

they take your photo with a webcam and they don't ask for onward tickets. And I

have to say, the one time I went to Mae-sot the Burmese immigration guys were

really nice. Cambodia is unpleasant, Laos is expensive, if you don't mind travelling

a little farther, it can be a much more enjoyable experience. :o

    Tak Checkpoint

    Ranong Checkpoint

It's actually $10 so about 150 baht coruption money.

  6. I think you'll find there is no point signing up, as the original post was to see how much interest would be generated up there. NOT a sign up thread.. If you guys from CR really want to make it happen PM george or buckwheat and have a chin wag.

    :o

Not point in chin wagging if theres no interest and so far it doesn't look like we could fill a telephone booth.

  7. We are looking for some places to take our two year old twin girls. They are getting tired of the local "waterfall", what would be great is if anybody knows of an adventure playground type place. Failing that anything entertaining would be a great help.

    thanks in advance

I suppose the most popular day out in Chiang Rai is Big C.

    after that

    Swimming at Rimkok resort ( members 30 swims@ 1500)

    or 80 baht a time.

    The local stadium ,

Santanee housing and Chiang Rai sportsclub also popular for swimming.

    http://www.chiangmai-chiangrai.com/2_golf_chiangrai.html

Play and practise golf at The Old Airport. Here you have a very good Driving Ranch and also a 9-hole golfcourse. You can find one of the best teachers in golf here, Barry Finch. And when you are hungry there is a hamburger restaurant.

    Cycling.

Tennis and sport also available at the sports stadium and at the sports area on the area( name?)

I know not all are suitable for young kids but it's a start and maybe others will have additional ideas.

  8. I haven't compared rental places, but I use the one north of the night bazaar on the right side. It's just past Siam Commercial bank (coming from downtown) halfway between night bazaar and the main police station (sorry, I can't recall road names).

It's next to an ice cream shop that's never open and is across from the courthouse.

Anyhow, they sure have a bevy of beautiful ladies working there - good enough reason to be a good customer, eh?

the English-language CD selection right near the counter has black plastic covers (no labels) and their quality is very poor, and they're a few baht cheaper.

However, the CD's and DVD's against the back wall, and in the far corner, are decent quality.

Thanks brahmburgers I'll check it out.

B.T.W Wiley Coyote which market are you talking about.

  9. Some members of Chiang Rai forum have expressed an interest in trying to get Thai Visa to hold a party here sometime in the future.

I don't know if they are interested in having a party here but if we come up with the numbers we should have a fair chance

Some members are doing Khaow Pansa and will remain sober for some time but we could organize it after that.

    So far we have

    brahmburgers 3

    svenivan 2

    Ulysses.G 2

    wileycoyote 2

    tayto 3

and many, many people from Chiang Mai.

anyone else interested pleaseeeeeeeeee add your name

  10. If you are going To MaeSai get your dollars in Chiang mai or Chiang Rai.

The banks and money exchanges in Mae Sai are part of a scam going on there, they do not give out dollars.

If by any chance you forget, there are a few gold shop who will give you dollars but at a bad rate.

Remember to give Burma, only dollars as they are pocketting bit time from this scam.

  11. Airport, airlines blame outsourced companies

Suvarnabhumi airport is stepping up surveillance of luggage on conveyor belts _ not to look for explosive material, but to prevent bags from being opened and valuables stolen by staff, airport director Serirat Prasutanond said yesterday.

Mr Serirat said security cameras are an effective tool for monitoring irregularities at the airport, but the airport needs more people to patrol areas where cameras are not installed.

He made the comments after reporting on thefts from luggage of inbound passengers at the airport.

The airport is only required to oversee baggage on its conveyor belts, while airlines are responsible for carrying bags to and from the terminal, he said. Airlines outsource the duty to other firms.

Besides staff of the various firms, other thieves could be people who pretend to be luggage transporters, Mr Serirat said. They board vehicles transporting luggage and rummage through the bags, he said.

    Bangkok Post

So much for security at Suvarnabhumi airport.

  12. Not sure it was the biggest party ever.... one in patters was fking huge. :D

The CM Party is officially the biggest TV party - 122 Members and guests. I think Pattaya tipped just over 100.

    CB

    Actually,

The official count at Pattaya was 62.

Chiang Mai was 2 people short of DOUBLING the previously biggest party with 122 attendees.

Chiang Mai has set the standard and currently holds the title!

Ok I accept the challenge - we will beat that number in Patters this Dec. :o

Maybe when all us Chiang Rai'ers wake up, we will beat u all.

  13. Ok. For the Chiang Rai party we have 4 from Chiang Rai and 122 gate crashers from Chiang Mai.

Just joking but surely more people from Chiang Rai would like a party with free food and beer.

I know some people are doing Khao Pansa at the moment but we could organize something after that.
