A Wonder-ful World
Lisbon, Portugal (Agencies)
It's not just a Great Wall - China's marvel has been proclaimed as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Angkor Wat of Cambodia did not make the cut.
Along with the Great Wall of China the new 7 Wonders are:
- India's Taj Mahal
- Rome's Colosseum
- the ancient site of Petra in Jordan
- Peru's Machu Picchu
- Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer
- Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid
The pyramids of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, were assured of retaining their status in addition to the new seven after indignant Egyptian officials said it was a disgrace they had to compete.
All seven new wonders, including the latter thhree architectural marvels from Latin America, were chosen in a global poll released early on Sunday, Thailand time.
About 100 million votes were cast by the Internet and cellphone text messages, said New7Wonders, the nonprofit organisation that conducted the poll.
The seven beat out 14 other nominated landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Easter Island in the Pacific, the Statue of Liberty, the Acropolis and Russia's Kremlin and Australia's Sydney Opera House.
The Statue of Liberty and Australia's Sydney Opera House were near the bottom of the list from the start.
Also among the losing candidates were Cambodia's Angkor, Spain's Alhambra, Turkey's Hagia Sophia, Japan's Kiyomizu Temple, Russia's Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle, Britain's Stonehenge and Mali's Timbuktu.
The campaign to name new wonders was launched in 1999 by the Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. Almost 200 nominations came in, and the list was narrowed to the 21 most-voted by the start of 2006. Organisers admit there was no foolproof way to prevent people from voting more than once for their favorite.

Many house holds in Chiang Rai are using hilltribe and Burmeese maids paying as low as 2000 baht a month.
-
My feelings are that very few expats or tourists are willing to pay the high price for magazines and Chiang Rai doesn't have a lot of either, but giving it a try - and giving it some time so people know that they are available - are the only ways to know for sure.
#I have to agree with Ulysses. The number of expats in Chiang rai isn't big enough to sustain this operation.
Many foreigners that are working and living here would be reluctant to fork out 300 baht for a magazine.
Heck, people here don't even want the free magazine that is available.

Flew China airlines BKK-DUBLIN via amsterdam 3 years ago with 44 kgs and they did'nt bat an eyelid.
When I arrived in Dublin my luggage was missing. Two days later a taxi arrived at my home 150 miles away, and two guys came in carrying my case.
They said an extra person had to come in the taxi because the case was too heavy.
Wimps.

Well thank you Limbo. Yes JoelBarlowe was very amusing, and accurate enough about the place - but hardly very informative. You've given me more than I need for an introduction. Unfortunately I can't get there now for the exhibition or otherwize until I get back to Thailand next month.
so slooy
see www.chiangraiporvince.com/guide museum section
nothing like blowing your own trumpet then, eh!

Ireland has now increased this levy to 22c per plastic bag.
Hard to see this levy ever working in Thailand, it would put every somtam lady and roadside shop out of business.
Can you imagine taking your plastic bag out of your pocket and asking the somtan lady to put your food in this please??????????

Not quite the same.
If you turn up for the court, you'll get your bail money back.
But you will still be sentenced, and if jailed, you can't buy your way out.
Here, if you're sentenced for a reasonably minor crime, in some places you have a choice to pay a fine plus the cost of what it would be to keep you in jail or to serve the time without remission.
The rich go free and the poor stay in jail.
That's life.

Another slight problem is the misappropriation of funds made available for this and many other problems.

Try the exercise at the bottom of this page.
more difficult than it looks.
-
Unfortunitly some people here would not be in agreement with you.

PeaceBlondie.
I think you deserve a nice Irish saying for your kind words.
May your troubles be less
And your blessings be more.
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door.

There is a traditional thing in Mae Fah Luang Garden (the one in Chiang Rai, close to Country Homes) 18th of July.
What I understand it is free entre. Beautiful place and it will be a lot of people there.
Check the Photo exhibition with photos taken by farangs.
Is this the place almost opposite the entrnce 'gateway' thattakes you in a furlong or so to country homes? What is it - at normal times? Would someone tell me why it might be worth a visit? (I don't know CR well but will be moving there).
A furlong? <deleted> is a furlong, wasn't it some thing horses used to run. Actually vague memories of my Imperial measures system education recall it was so many chains. Or was it bushels?
Furlong
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1 furlong = International units
201.168 m 0.201 km
201.168×103 mm 2.012×1012 Å
1.345×10−9 AU 21.263×10−15 ly
US customary / Imperial units
7920 in 660 ft
220 yd 0.125 mi
A furlong is a measure of distance within imperial units and U.S. customary units, and is equal to 660 feet or one-eighth of a mile. In metric units, this is 201.168 metres.
Distances for thoroughbred horse races in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States are still given in miles and furlongs (example), but the unit is otherwise no longer in common use. It is heavily used within the rail industry (especially maintenance and repair services) in the UK, due to the legacy measurements and distance markers from when the tracks were first laid down.

If I were in a life or death situation and
had to make it to a hospital in Thailand again...
I'd go to Russia.
Perhaps you could find a TukTuk to take you there before your demise. In a life and death situation anyone with any first aid knowledge is a god sent.
as long as he's not a bible trumper.
now say after me" our father who art in...........................................................................
now you can be saved

cigs are cheaper at the thai borders than in duty free so can stock up before a flight and the minister can go FH with a bong.
