  1. As a further note to CrowBoy's above post, I want to say that by no means is the assignment of us as moderators (who live in Chiang Mai) any reflection on any person, group or faction in Chiang Rai. CrowBoy and myself are personal friends of george, Buckwheat and assorted other ThaiVisa.com luminaries. They asked us to help out, as they are somewhat stretched. I am not sure if you in CR are aware of this- it was announced at the CM TV BBQ that thaivisa.com is the largest expat forum in the world, right now. A lot of people, a lot of posts and a lot of threads.....we all want to make it a bigger and better success than it already is. And we welcome all posters, all insights and all points of view.

At some point soon, when it looks like the weather looks reasonably clear (no massive downpours) I would like to ride up on my motorcycle and visit CR a little more in depth than I have in the past. I'll probably stay at least 2 or 3 days, see the sites, and do some riding about on the local mountain roads. It would be great to meet some of you then..... :o

I still fail to see why the powers that be, did not appoint at least one moderator from Chiang Rai. Are we all so unworthy?

Whilst I agree this moderation could be done from any corner of Thailand, one would think that the moderator would have at least a basic knowledge of the area.

Now, you will both tell me you have .

In spite of this I will be courtious and if and when you decide to visit our nice city, I'll make you a nice cup of coffee/tea and show you the day spots and night spots and the shady characters of Chiang Rai.( sorry no booze as the whole town is on the wagon)

    Tayto(friendly)

  2. Hi,

Am a newbie and i wonder if any of you that live in the Amphur muang notice anything about renovations of the province sports stadium and the new bus station at Sansai?

According to Chiang Rai websites (news section) renovations of the province sports stadium with budjet of 60 millions baht to build a new soccer field ,running lanes, shooting sport ground (not sure its indoor or outdoor) and a new building for indoor sports. To finish at end of october 2007 (next month) and will continue with constructions up to year 2008 with a budjet about 100 millions baht. All together from year 2007-2008 the approximately budjet of 200 millions baht. In the future the city will also build a new swimming pool of 50 meters. For the new bus station will be build at Sansai. They already started the work at 22th of june 2007 so maybe some of you must have seen it?Constructions would be finish around april year 2009. Amphur muang cant be expanding anymore i think its a good thing. The traffic inside the town would be less then now with less air pollution and noises. The new bus station is 6 kms away from town.

Yes, these projects were announced some time ago and though the "stadium" sports centre has progressed well, there hasn't been much progress on the new bus station.

The idea is to move all the provincial, Bangkok buses to Sansai because of the congestion of traffic in the city. This move will be very inconvenient as it is quite a way out of the city.

Also in the plan is the ''bypass''

  3. I suppose being a missionary these days is a career like any other. They want a job with perks and a decent salary like anyone else.

The days of the Doctor Livingstone type appear to be gone, dedicated people working in isolated places for decades with scarcely a roof over their heads...

What bugs me is their "holier than thou" attitude, and how little money from genuine donors filters down to the people it's intended for. A lot of the tsunami money was side tracked into other projects and the culprits got quite indignant when this was pointed it out.

There was a post on Thai360 the other day about two highly qualified English doctors, husband and wife, who just packed up and moved to Mai Sot on the Burmese border to treat refugees. In their spare time :o , they conduct research into some of the strange diseases they come across.

Here's the link... don't panic CrowBoy it's to the original story, not Thai360.

Now that's my sort of "missionary".

Great article about really caring people.

I think the day of volunteering and caring for the deprived is over, everything seems to have a price tag.

I also know first hand of a considerable amount of money, send by my local town to the tsunami victims, that was squandered by local officials on lunches and travelling expenses to Bangkok.

God, Buddha or Allah be with them, not.

I'm not nearly so cynical. I still find many a fine person voluntarily caring for the deprived. I guess it's just the circle of people one walks amongst.

I remember reading a survey asking various groups what percentage of the population took drugs. Those that took drugs felt a much larger percentage of the total population also took drugs as opposed to the perspectives of those who didn't take drugs. The same principle may be at work here.

So, are you trying to say we are all taking drugs???????????????????????????? or that we are all missionaries????????????????

    50 PEOPLE STUNG

Swarm of angry bees attacks pupils on soccer pitch

Chiang Rai _ A large swarm of angry bees attacked students and staff of a primary school in Chiang Rai's Wiang Chai district yesterday. At least 50 people, mostly small children, were stung.

The swarm attacked during a lunch break while many students of Ban Wiang Doem school were playing on the school's football field.

School director Natthapong Athawongsa said 13 kindergarten pupils, aged 5-6 years, were in serious condition and had been taken to hospital. One of them, five-year-old Theerawat Khuikhia, was put on a respirator at Somdej Phra Yanasangworn Hospital, he said.

Mr Natthapong said the swarm of bees moved in and settled on a tree in the school grounds on Tuesday evening.

The bees responded angrily when a group of Prathom 4 pupils threw stones at them, he said. All pupils were evacuated while staff tried to chase the bees away with fire.

The director also asked the local disaster mitigation office to help get rid of the bees by spraying them.

  5. Yayto is right. Why do we have to have a non local to moderate us? They dont know our community.

I vote Taxi Joe to be our new Moderator.

Dont know Taxi Joe but Taxim needs a job, and some where to live by all accounts so he could start straight away :o

I would seriously doubt if our new Chiang Mai moderator ever heard of taxi joe.

Who really cares who is the moderater anyway. I am sure the OP was merely raising a point of curiosity in the first place. And at any rate it is a thankless task anyway so lets have some interesting CR topics in the future.

    No.I wasn't.

Well you should........ just dont see why it is such a big deal................. Hey Gordon Brown has just taken over as PM in the UK, he lives in london and knows frig all about the rest of the country.... And dont get me started on Goerge Bush (he has trouble finding the bathroom in the morning and he is running America) :D

    :D

So now you're comparing our new Chiang Mai moderators to Gordon Brown and George Bush.

Doesn't say much for the future of Chiang Rai forum.

  8. No worries, guys. CB and I do live in CM, but we both are very familiar with CR.

We look forward to being with you, both as posters and moderators.

Likewise, any problems, complaints or concerns, either PM me, or email at:

    [email protected]

    Hello, who are you?

I have never even heard of your name before today, so it would be nice to know who our moderator is.

  9. I wouldnt mind having a hit when I move up in about November, and am wondering if its worth bringing my raquet or not.

    cheers.

Don't know of any squash courts in the city, plenty of badminton or tennis though.

I do know that the Anantara Golden Triangle Resort in Chiang saen has one but if open to non residents, I'm not sure.

  10. So pick the bones out of that tayto. :o

Who would you have suggested? Name one regular poster who would be have been acceptable to the majority of the other regular posters.

We stuffed it up here mate and there was a very real danger that the CR sub forum would have been closed. At one stage I never saw a single post in nearly four days.

As I said earlier, we don't need to agree with each other but we need to be polite and supply a regular source of information to visitors and expats alike.

Actually I would have no hesitation in nominating you

or chownah, svenivan, mumbojumbo, wileycoyote, brahmburger or any regular Chiang rai poster but alas I wasn't asked.

This forum is still very much alive and though days can go by without activity, we would still be well ahead of other regions.

Anyway I look forward to having nice polite words with you and extend the hand of friendship and co-operation to all in Thai Visa's Chiang Rai forum.

    Tayto (polite)

  11. I know there is a danger this post will be deleted and censored but here goes.

Why is Chiang Rai being moderated by 2 mods from Chiang Mai? I most definitly am not looking for the position but, with the utmost respect to Crowboy and another who I don't know, is there nobody from Chiang Rai worthy of the honour.

A bit like Pattaya forum being moderated by someone living in Bangkok??????????

  12. I'm prepared to start with a clean slate and do every thing I can to make the CR forum a success. Some of us here are going to disagree on expat matters but I'll do what I can to keep it civilised.

Excepting if a certain Chiang Mai book shop owner comes down here stirring the pot, then boy is he gonna cop it. Kindly old gentleman or not. :o

    Here,here.

Thank you for permission to continue our conversation???????

Come on give me a break - it's my first day

    Welcome to Chiang Rai.

I think there is a general agreement amongst the posters that most of the many, many missionaries in Chiang Rai are not worthy to receive any donations from the o.p.

There are some suggestions of other organizations that are worthy and I totally agree with them.

Is it general agreement out of factual information that these people are abusing their position?

Yes, first and second hand knowledge.

if you want various examples, I will gladly post them

If that is the case then they should be reported to Immigration.

    CB

I would not report anything to immigration or to the police here nor do I think anyone else would

  16. I agree 100 %.

These people cannot simply donate their money or time to education or to the improvement of infrastructure in these pooer villages and leave.

They want to set up nice homes near to the city, drive nice cars and gather up a group of girls from the villages and put them into dormitories, where they are at the mercy of these scumbags.

Volunteering is a big business in Thailand, volunteer teachers pay big bucks just to come to teach in Thailand and only a small fraction of donations seems to reach the really needy people.

  17. Also be careful of bible thumping christian so called do gooders.

These scum are like a plague in Chiang Rai and their so called caring and compassion comes at a price to the weaker and more vunerable members of society.
