Brexit does seem characterised by incompetence doesn't it?

thank you for sharing this absolute must read article, ...   " But, given the almost complete inability of the British media to report the issues in any depth, one wonders whether more intense coverage would make any difference, other than spread the veneer of ignorance somewhat thinner"

Would have been?  It's a matter of history that they were allowed to go on their way after burning entire neighborhoods.

there were opportunist looters and white supremacists such as the  Boogaloo Bois inciting violence to start a race war

3 self-proclaimed members of the far-right 'boogaloo' movement were arrested on domestic terrorism charges for trying to spark violence during protests (businessinsider.fr)

How many photos of the BLM'ers did the FBI plaster all over the interweb asking for the public's help to identify them?  And how many did they track down to their home towns 2000 miles away in the first week?

Violence to achieve any political end is violence, and is unacceptable whether the victims of that violence are innocent shop owners or elected officials.

Ya think some in the capitol riots would have had second thoughts if the authorities had come down harder and pursued the BLM protestors further than a few hundred meters?  If they had seen BLM rioters hunted down 2000 miles away?

So you really believe BLM demonstrators would have been allowed to return home, had they commited similar violent acts storming the Capitol - like it was the case here?

It just goes to show how stupid/ignorant/gullible most of these people really are, and also gutless whiners, when it comes down to it. Not to mention the double standard that they have: BLM should not even be allowed to protest, but when “their president” calls on them to storm the Capitol and basically stage a coup, they answer that call in droves because that’s all fine and dandy and not at all questionable or illegal. And they have the gall to call themselves patriots!
Years and years of lies, hate and indoctrination by (far) right wing media have done a lot of damage, and four years of Trump incessantly spreading lies, conspiracy theories and divisiveness even more so. Biden has his work cut out for him, but I have no idea how the USA can recover from this, when dozens of millions of people are totally convinced that Democrats eat babies, the Donald is their messiah and savior and the election was stolen from him, even though there isn’t a single shred of evidence to support that claim.

and It's not exclusive to the U.S,

"The QAnon movement is spreading around the world, turning an outlandish conspiracy theory revolving around President Trump into one of the nation’s most dangerous exports. Another way that the pandemic has contributed to the international spread of QAnon is by isolating people and leaving them with little to do but go online.  Social media has been the biggest vector for QAnon’s international growth."

Ryan says she does not "feel like she did anything wrong" and being at the Capitol riots felt "noble" and is something she's proud of.

Comments from officers protecting the Capitole show what a bunch of suckers the protesters were!

"Some of them felt like we would be fast friends because so many of them have been vocal," Hodges said. "They say things like, 'Yeah, we've been supporting you through all this Black Lives Matter stuff, you should have our back' and they felt entitled."

He added, "They felt like they would just walk up there and tell us that they're here to take back Congress and we would agree with them and we'd walk in hand in hand and just take over the nation. But obviously that's not the case and it will never be the case."

If you look at ancient history, even during the Roman empire, a similar situation arise, and the outcome was 10 years of civil war and the rise of a brutal dictator after 10 years of fighting

is that really what the Democrats want? At least Biden is smart enough to want peace and put everything behind and move on. He might be a boring stiff, but he is a very reasonable person ????

  12. Trump is a liar,  but over 74M people trust him.

Trump is a cheating loser but  over 74M people have put their faith in the predictions he made months before the elections that he statistically could not lose, therefore, Trump won.

Trump relies on conspiracists, white supremacists, neo-nazis all thugs he has empowered and  over 74M people, preys,  don't mind sitting next to them.

The evolution of words describing the fans of Mr. trump and his movement has interested me for a long time.

A number of these words are very widely used in speech and media and have already appeared in dictionaries but I think their future is in flux.

In other words, which of the many of them will become more dominant leaving the others to obscurity?

There are also scads of more slang type words that serve similar functions that have also been widely used in the press. Such as "trumpy" as an adjective, for example to describe another politician, policy, or even style of dress, etc.

From my POV, it's normal and natural for language to evolve in this way. While I often use the phrase trump fans or the trump movement to serve these functions, one word would be much better.  Mr. trump, horrible as he has proven to be, is still without a doubt an extremely consequential president and the movement he has represented has become a major force in both American and world politics. Another example of this kind of thing is Peron of Argentina. To this day politicians there are still described as Peronist.

The major risk to Trump is if they confiscate his passport .  Over 70 countries do not have an extradition agreement with USA .  If the Biden administration doesn't want to deal with a prolonged prosecution they can just look the other way as Trump hops on a private jet to a welcoming haven . He will have to grease the wheels with millions in donations to those in charge but that is what the Bank of Cyprus can facilitate discreetly .

My vote would be UAE and Dubai specifically as he has a golf course there surrounded by the lavish lifestyle he is used to . He will have to change his dishonest ways because in Dubai you go to jail if you default on payments . Personally I would like to see  him spend the rest of his life in jail but that naively assumes the world is fair .

+ Trump's name,  once a brand is tarnished by his failures to get re-elected and to reverse, by his machination, the results of the elections..

"“As he’s walking out of the palace gates he’s torching the kingdom, but in doing so he’s permanently damaging his own brand,” said Sally Hogshead, a branding specialist. “There’s a shame factor with being associated with the Trump brand for a larger percentage of the population than before.”

Whatever. Keep your head burried and ignore historical precident. Why are you SO focused on the speed issue.

As thru history the speed of communication has increased. The effect, most certainly, has not. 1 hour or one month, historically the result is the same.

I'm not focused on the speed issue, I'm focused  on the easy access to a large audience and to the POTUS social media allow, available to the first averaje Joe, which is all to the benefit of little extremist groups  which otherwise would never have such a large resonance for being just one tweet away.

Reason why the GOP finds itself hostage of these mobs and reluctant to antagonize them.

If it's Revolution to you, then consider we in France have an episode every saturday.

  16. 31 minutes ago, mikebike said:

The point is you DO NOT need to "instantly" reach your audience.

You must be perplexed at how the French and American revolutions were planned if the above is your understanding of communication.

The point is that social media make it possible to an unknown average  joe - with little efforts -  and no cash,  to trigger and coordinate a violent riot mobilizing enough people (4000 activists) - this is to compare to how a looting mob operates, and it has little to do with a Revolution.

how easy was it 100, 200, 300 years ago, for a lambda to instantly reach an audience of Millions of people and organize a protest march gathering people from all the US? ... Ask Ali Alexander
