  1. I renewed my license today and was pleasantly surprised. Previously they wouldn't issue a 5 year license with an elite visa, was specifically told when renewing 2 years ago it had to be a non-imm visa only (oddly enough told it had to be a long term visa to get a 5 year license???)

I was expecting another 2 year temporary. Anyways I don't have to go back for 5 years now :)

  2. As an Australian, does anyone know if a stat-dec from the Australian honorary consul is accepted in lieu of a residence certificate?

I have used one before, but maybe 4 years ago and at the time he wasn't sure how much longer it would be accepted as proof of residency for a drivers license.

  3. Hello!

I used PE Visa about 6 or 7 times already in and out this year. The first time direct to Chiang Mai airport the officer appeared like he had never seen PE visa before. Chiang Mai does not have Thailand Elite staff for greeting. He asked another agent guy something and I got 90 days. Another time when I flew BKK the IO asked me How long you stay? I got 30 days entry. Maybe he did not want to change his stamp? Thailand Elite said it was a mistake and I should check the stamp before leaving but I work outside Thailand and never stay long anyway.

I've had similar experiences. The visa remains a bit outside of passport controls status quo and I continually get met with confusion. I recon the thaielite meet and greet people are there just as much to assist immigration as they are to assist you.

At CNX, I recommend to only go through the Thai only queue (even though it's the furthest from the escalator and the baggage carousel), it has the thaielite placard on the counter and the IOs at that counter seems to be more aware. A few days ago I went through the Thai only queue, and besides the initial confusion because I'm not Thai, the IO was very helpful and was all done correctly. Unlike 6 weeks back, I went through a standard foreigner queue closer to the baggage carousel and the IO wouldn't recognise the visa and began interrogating me about why I had so many stamps and what I was doing in Thailand and that I needed a proper visa blah blah blah. I had to ask to speak to his supervisor, after a few words my passport was stamped.

  4. Do they keep your residence certificate? Im going in tomorrow for a first time license and got the certificate but will need it to buy a bike soon so would be quite annoying to get a new one.

And thanks everyone for all the information here, I would have gone in without the medical exam :-)

sorry to say, they need the original and they keep it. you're going to need to get another cert to purchase a bike.
  5. btw my tourist visas, I got them with no problems... I just show I have 500'000 bahts invested or on a bank account , and I got my tourist visa double or triple entries in no time. one after one.

7 years tourist, no questions asked.

(and people carry my luggage for 20 bahts and my visas is processed first Because I offer 50 bahts to I/O). I can not wait for my next visa run.

you seem guys (elite member? , what a dumb name btw! ) to be stuck with too much money in hand . some of your comments are ridiculous and infantile . maybe it s time to grow up than being brainwashed by Thai people and their ridiculous cards which is just lot of money for little nothing.

Thai government have a good laugh at you.

Who in the airport takes care of your luggage for 20thb lol

This is a troll post... :)

The guy made the username for the sole purpose of trolling thaielite threads.

I think he's actually employed by thaielite, he does such a good job of selling the card for them.

  6. What could make a person commit such an act, perhaps it could be a person whose family members

or friends are in leg irons. Placed there by an (unelected Military Judicial system with no appeals available

and not open to the public.

Left to spend 28 years and 30 years in a prison cell for freedom of conscience. No one pays attention, everyone looks the other way.

How about if it was one of your family or friends?

I know many Thai's are not too happy about that and chose to not participate in the "Bike Farce" while innocents are rotting away

in a prison cell for so-called "Violations of Thainess"

"How about if it was one of your family or friends?"

I can't see myself wanting to blow up a whole bunch of innocent people because of that.

    But you would?

Never said it was Justified, Stated that motivation to commit more terrorism is coming as more people turn their heads and ignore the human rights abuses the military is constantly inflicting on the population with their endless "propaganda machine" Keep suppressing peoples right to vote, right to Free speech or to associate in gatherings of no more than 5 people, Keep charging people in military courts with no appeals to the verdict, Keep it up Thailand and I am sure there will be more of this to come. Respect to the innocent victims who died and the ones who have died the last few years in prison for text messages, You tube videos and Facebook posts.

sounds like you're justifying it to me.

  8. Like those legitimately on ED visas who are now being scrutinised because of others operating within the grey area of immigration law, there is always going to be concern for some that the digital nomads might attract difficulties in the future for those in staying in the black and white area of immigration law.

Others got here the long hard way, so have some obvious animosity towards the more entrepreneurial types.

The thing I like about the expats in this country, they all have a great story on how they got here.

You're talking rubbish. Read my post above as I don't want to type it all out again, however, the gist of it is this. ED visa scrutiny is not down to online workers and online work has never ever in anything I've ever read been attributed to people working online.

er, um... Read my post again! I was defending you.

Up to you to be an auto-<deleted>.

  9. "On the negative side, coal releases more greenhouse gases. There is no fuel that is perfect," he explained."

No but the option that release the most greenhouse gases should not be the fuel of choice.

As he explains that gas is being rapidly depleted, what do you suggest? Heavy fuel oil gives about the same CO2 output as anthracite, with much more other toxins because the lighter elements have been refined off. Diesel is far more expensive.

Got to start looking at green technologies and investing in them.

Going to take a long time and may be expensive but the alternative of further heating the planet is not sustainable.

Not just Thailand that needs to do this. Has to be worldwide and has to be a genuine commitment made towards changing how we obtain and use power.

    Will it happen?

I doubt it, long term thinking does not seem to be something countries think about when it comes to energy.

Cost in terms of finance they understand, cost in that they are destroying the only planet we have is not an issue.

Such as ? which techologies which would provide the amounts of MW needed to power a country such as Thailand

Solar power to cook lentils doesnt quite cut it i am afraid

Not yet and if it is ever to get there, there needs to be investment and development.

The current choices are damaging the planet.

We need to start taking the alternative, less polluting solutions seriously.

Short term, yes the polluting choices are the ones we have become dependent upon.

However to choose coal, the option that produces the most greenhouse gases, is just stupid.

Over to you then i have asked 3 times that you suggest some viable alternatives and you you keep coming up with is soap box rhetoric

Currently thailand consumes at peak demand over 20,000 MW (stand to be corrected) and over 70% of the fuel comes from natural gas, when this runs out how do you make up a short fall of so many MW using greenie power ?

Even building nukes its a difficult shortage to fill even building say 2000MW units give a typical PWR takes between 8 to 12 years to construct and commission

You don't bother reading much of others posts do you?

I said I know that green energy is not yet ready, repeatedly.

I also said we are still dependent on polluting power sources and have to use them.

The choice being made here though to build a coal plant is stupid as it is the most dangerous option in that it produces the most greenhouse gases.

It's cheap but the cost in financial savings is at the expense of the planet.

    It's the worst possible solution.

unfortunately (because I wish sustainables could do it) it's apples and oranges. base-load supply on demand vs power on availability sustainables.

Curious to know if sustainables could fill the gap, or they need more base load supply. If the second is the case, a bunch of wind turbines and solar panels aren't going to do it atm.

  11. I've only been there once and that was early. But Tripadvisor contains some hair-raising allegations:

    “Dangerous and violent.”

    x.gifReviewed 27 July 2015

Me and 2 friends were at Zoeys 2 weeks ago. I assumed that the bar over the road was connected to the main bar, however I was wrong. The main bouncer clicked his fingers and within seconds I got dragged down an alley by 5-6 bouncers and beaten repeatedly, getting knocked unconscious 4-5 times. I had bottles of Chang smashed over my head and even a gun pointed at my head.

“Disgraceful bouncers, don't ever visit ”

    x.gifReviewed 4 July 2015

My friend and I went here to drink a few beers for our first night in Chiang Mai. The night was going well and the place seemed good until one bald headed bouncer decided to slam my friends head into a table because he believed he had got his drink somewhere else. He never even allowed my friend to explain that he had purchased a beer from inside the bar. I've never seen such a disgraceful act by the bouncers in a nightclub before in my life. Don't visit this bar, it's run by complete scumbags who is thinks they're above the law and it is the worst nightclub/bar I've ever been to in my life. The bouncer was clearly one of those guys who is way to worried about the size of his own dick instead of doing his own job. There is so many other places in Chiang Mai to see instead!

    “Dangerous Place”

    x.gifReviewed 4 July 2015

We went for a birthday paty and we were really choked by what we see.

Most of the staff are there just to fight, and when they don't have anything to do they just assault a random costumer.

We witness 3 really bad beat up by the so called staff.

They drag the costumer in a small alley and kick him when he was allready insonscious for 20 minutes.

The manager was smilling and lafing during this.

There are many bars in the Zoe area. I wonder which ones these reported incidents occurred in.

The topic is Zoe in Yellow.

The tripadvisor reviews are for Zoe in Yellow.

Maybe you can sense that there is a link there.

Perhaps tourists become confused when the entire complex of bars is referred to as Zoe Yellow... Which is how many perceive the place...

curiously, is it just Zoe in Yellow that is closed or the whole complex?

    I haven't been there for a while.

In the sparrow's fart time you want the current government too - what does that even mean??? Are you saying that your favorite Uncle should not start reforming the police because he won't be in power for long? Haven't you read the news - he has graciously "offered" to stay in power until a new government is "elected" but that this might take a while. Please let us know why he then shouldn't start this most urgently needed reform?

I see why you didn't post a link when

Just because you guys turn into total nitpicks in your hatred towards the bogeyman in Dubai does not alter the fact that the PTP won the last X elections with a wide margin. Oh, wait...one could actually say they got the majority of the votes!

basic English skills are beyond their grasp.

BTW, the last government coalition consisted of 6 parties with 299 out of 500 seats in parliament.

An outright majority of the seats, 265, went to the PTP party.

So what is the point these guys are trying to make, anyway???

  13. "the region implement a new political cooperation treaty to have "balance of national sovereignty and collective responsibility".

For that ASEAN will need to address Thailand having TWO sovereign entities - one for Thai people and one for the military.

be careful. Who is the sovereign head of state?
  14. So long as the Thai government insists that Thailand be the Hub of Everything ASEAN, there will be no true ASEAN Community.

Given the Junta's lack of accountability, transparency, freedom of expression, indiscriminatory laws and edits, focus on THAI culture and Prayut's 12 Values, the Thai government presents insurrmountable barriers to free trade between Thailand and its ASEAN counterparts.

The good news is that Thailand's failed governance and economy will provide opportunity for the other ASEAN countries to expand their own economies. That in turn will begin a geopolitical shift in the region towards democratic institutions that will isolate Thailand's future in ASEAN.

yep, Thailand's failings is going to lead the other ASEAN countries (Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, laosetc.) towards democracy.

    Or probably not.
