when did you do that?i only had a tourist visa and i got a license, i got a letter of residency from the condo i stayed in, doctor slip and take to immigration and they get you a 90 thai driver's license letter and that was that.. i had to take to the testing place and jump through some hoops.
-
"I had to have a certificate of residency and a doctors certificate - easy to get."
And residence letter is not available if you only have a Tourist Visa or 30 day visa free entry.have they changed the rules on this recently?
-
It would be bizarre not to give it to the other kinds of non immigrant visa holders too at least.
I have an an "O" visa, yes they accept "OA","B", etc, as long as it's a non imm.
Tourist visa's are a no go.
being arbitrary without clear qualification whilst avoiding the immediate question, it seems there is no new rule here.
as i said, i've been in 3 times in three years on 3 VE stamps and without issue. my last one was 27th march this year. eye-catcher said he got his first on a tourist visa 2 months ago. you need a non-imm to go from the 1 year temporary to the the 5 year license, otherwise they will only reissue another 1 year temporary.
the rest of your advice is sound, as i said, i've done it 3 times now.

I always assumed Thailand was like the UK, EU, USA, AUS etc etc; tourists can rent vehicles if they have a valid license from their own country. It's only when they stay beyond a time of tourism that they require a license as if they were residents, 1 to 6 month cut off normally.
Otherwise how can all the car rental companies such as Hertz and Budget etc be operating here? I doubt they would be here if not legally sound.
forget about the license for a second, I'll tell you the story as to why i got mine.
insurance.
a few years ago my personal risk exposure due to the amount of riding i was doing without proper insurance started to play heavily on my mind. travel insurance wouldn't cover a bike accident, there was no insurance from the bike rental places, it wasn't clear what my health insurance would cover (i guess SFA). so i purchased my own bike then put 1st class insurance on the bike which required the primary driver have a Thai license.
i came off the bike back in january, and well, now i'm glad this is what i did. everything was black&white, the 1st class insurance paid up, the compulsory government insurance paid up, hospital bills and repairs to the bike paid for, with little hesitance.

have they changed the rules on that? Before they'd still give the 1 year temporary, even on an exempt stamp, but not the 5 year. This is assuming you have a non immigrant or business visa. You won't get one without that.

I'm still very interested to know about this.
I got both my temporary car and bike license 3 years ago and have renewed it twice since, all 3 times I had VE stamps.
I'm very interested to know if they have now limited this to only non-imm visas.

I'm also curious to the experience of members who (of which the recent changes could affect) come through with no issue.

Yet one I know in hua hin just got told, last time, next time get a visa.. By immigration at swampy.
So unless your there to tell the immigration offer the correct meaning and understanding, I think he has grounds for concern.
I still struggling to understand this.
i know of a few also, they are pulled up and told "Get a Visa"
why would immigration pull them aside and say "get a visa" if they are tourists, even routinely long term ones... unless they obviously aren't, the finer details as to possibly why continually get spared.
except the one pinpointed previously today in this thread, in which the finer detail was extremely concise:
"A Colleague who is married with a family and house car and all the fruit.
Has not been let in to the country. On a 30 tourist visa."
3 reasons that would indicate he's not a tourist, 3 "other" reasons he's a non-immigrant visitor.
what needs to happen here, if someone reports that immigration have either advised "Get a visa" or denied entry, some detail of their personal circumstance needs to be included, not just "he's O&G 28/28, must be the number of entries".
I'm watching this thread closely, it concerns me, but i'm not going to pull the trigger on 500 gorillas (i'd rather buy a f800gs) if people are getting advised or refused by the immigration officials simply because they have "i'm on the wrong visa" tattooed on their forehead.
-
I posted this in another topic, but no response. people do get profiled coming through immigration and I suspect the stories of those being singled out have got "I'm not a tourist" tattooed on their forehead.
"at this point there seems to be more people passing through the airports regularly and still getting 30 tourist visa exempt stamps than those being pulled aside and being told to get a proper visa.
i'm curious to know how the ones being pulled up are presenting themselves as. ie. what are you wearing (singlet, collared shirt, flip-flops, covered shoes etc)? cleanly shaven? tattoos? are you filling out your departure card? where are you listing on your arrival card as staying (hotel or house/condo), and purpose of visit (holiday, visiting friends family)?"
-
Many would do that in Australia if the had a meeting in Sydney and lived in Melbourne. Same time round about. It is why airlines make money.
Are you joking? What business man that have one meeting today and one tomorrow, would leave the country and come back in a few hours?So...if you have back to back business meetings in Thailand, what visa can you apply for?
But that's in the same country. So I can't see what that has to do with the visa question here
I know people who do that regularly in SE Asia, they have APEC cards so aren't actually entering on visa exempts.

why press the issue after being told there wasn't one?Hey Guy,
Just passed immigration at the airport, i asked 2 officer about about my situation they both said i'm fine to come and go as i have been, but promoted the second officer on the fact i was stopped, pulled to one side and they took a photo copy of my passport and told me i needed the correct visa. He didn't have a answer for me and pointed to the overstay rules and informed they were the new rules and walked away.
anyway applying for a non O multi tomorrow so hopefully have no more problems.

there is an additional 20,000 annual fee on the 20 year card, but not on the 5 year easy access.C'mon, what is 20,000 baht a year nowadays?
Peanuts
Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand
just that it brings the yearly cost to 120,000 baht when a retirement visa costs around 2000 baht. the 20 year is the worst option of all, more expensive than the 5 year card
I think the batteries in your calculator are running a bit low, 5yr card for THB500,000, V 20yr card for THB2,000,000 equates to exactly the same....(5yr X 4 = 20yr, 500,000 X 4 = 2,000,000)

um, but we're not Thai, we're not rural Thai, we shouldn't come expecting to be getting the same benefits as the poorest of the Thais... especially if we come beating the "I've got money" drum then expect to be only compared to the poorest in the country.
actually if you come beating the "I've got money" drum, you should be compared to the richest of Thais.
So a non Thai national should be regarded in the same category as as the richest Thai's?
Really, teachers, retirees backpackers and all!
You haven't thought this through, I can tell.
You haven't read it through, I can tell.
Hey, I'm just trying to challenge your point of discussion!
You state you should be treated in the same way as the richest Thai, your position is not defensible and along with so many of your breatheren these days who can't debate or support their spouting with fact or reasoned argument, you push back on the readings skills of your challenger, You're too funny, really.
what the F are you on about?
you've totally missed my point and gone off on a tangent.

1 mil a year isn't "money", that's only 2700 a day.
Local Thai's who exist happily on 300 Baht a day would disagree, they will say that 2,700 a day is serious money, maybe you're in the wrong country.
true, but we're not talking about "local" Thais...
But this is Thailand, rural Thai's comprise a vast majority of the population, better than 80%. Why, if foreigners want to come to Thailand to live should they expect more than that?

For some reason when I read the op my mind played it back with a Russian voice.
Anyway mr op - don't jet the door hot u on the way out. U have made a enough reasons for u to leave.
Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect ThailandMan, stop the Russian/non Russian war. Thailand does not care about the Tourism industry anymore. It represents less than 1% of the GDP, We are no wanted anymore, Russians or not.
Thai economy receives around 7% of its GDP from international tourism revenue, a figure which is nonetheless a substantial 550 billion Baht (nearly USD 16 billion).
at 1 mil a year, that means the equivalent of 550, 000 of the OP.

will you accept that the article is missing the odd punctuation mark, the quotation marks and that missing comma which would indicate that Chalerm said it, and was not summation by the News Bureau?quotes are quotes, they come in quotation marks. If not, you can't quote them verbatim.comprehension?Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app
OK Mr Pedantic, for the sake of argument will you accept that Chalerm is reported to have said things, but they are not shown in quotation marks in this particular article. I have used quotation marks to make it easy for the hard of thinking to understand. Obviously I have failed.
My argument still stands that the usual suspects on here are working themselves up into a frenzy over a deliberate inflammatory summary made up by the News Bureau, not Chalerm, not that it will stop them venting their collective angst, it seems.

No.
so let me get this straight.
you will accept, missing/misleading punctuation to support your argument.
but not anyone else's?

quotes are quotes, they come in quotation marks. If not, you can't quote them verbatim.comprehension? You really having trouble with your reading, aren't you? Or did you deliberately leave out the "could" as in
"his fears that violence could break out if the premier was found guilty of her charges"
likewise you left out the qualifier "until the new government takes office" as in
PM Yingluck and her cabinet must remain in power until the new government takes office.
...............as per the Constitution.
See, both those phrases in their original form read as quite reasonable things to say, not the sinister little soundbites you changed them into.
You're so transparent rubl, who are trying to kid?

How much is the fine for not having a driving licence?

um, well, last time i went to renew my license on my VE stamp (march 2014), i didn't get a residence cert from immigration... they opened a new office and changed the process from a "lodge morning, pick up midday 500 baht", to a "lodge today, pick up in 5-8 working days" so f**k that, i went to my countrys honorary consul and signed a stat-dec to say i was a resident, in-out with a bit of chit chat in 15 minutes. the year previously (february 2013), i got 2 residence-certs from immigration (lodge morning, pick up afternoon 500 baht)- i applied for 3: 1 to renew my licence, 1 to purchase a motorbike, 1 to open a bank account... they wouldn't give me the third for the bank account because i didn't have a non-imm visa (I was being cheeky knowing it would be declined), the others weren't an issue on a VE stamp.
thats right, license and green book on a tourist visa exempt stamp! all legal, no bullshit, approved by immigration and the department of land transport.
this is in no-ones dreams, don't mock it, it's fact. if the process has changed it is important and relevant information for those who don't have a non-imm visa, so please don't spare the details if you have new information. likewise, don't spread false or distorted information that could lead ignorant people into breaking the law.
