Just don't give them any money or whisky

or beer. Just offer water and smile.

The reason for the visit is to establish that you actually live there as man and wife and that it is not a bogus marriage of convenience. They usually require a neighbour or the village head to attend and confirm you do live there. The witness will need their blue house book and ID as will your wife.

is it 500 now? Always used to be 300 for 1 and 500 for 2 - which they tried to push if you wanted for car and bike although Pattaya DLT (at Regents) has always accepted one original and one copy in the past.

Certificate of Residency is free but even my usually honest provincial office charges 500 baht and no receipt

Why are pensioners with low pensions in particular penalized by the new tax system for foreigners!? Does the Thai government actually believe that this will result in more tax revenue at the end of the day? There will be an exodus of expats with the result that in certain places the property market will collapse and the purchasing power of those remaining will be reduced by the amount of tax they pay! This, in turn, affects small businesses that have been hit by the poor economy, which can then pay less taxes or have to go out of business! The fact that this whole story is being treated by the government like a secret mission (little information until Zero in the media) suggests that those responsible are not convinced of their case! In any case, I say no to the state raid on my pension and say byebye Thailand!

    What is your opinion?

My wife actually has a job and earns a decent income.

I will just attach myself to her tax return so it looks like she is supporting me. May even get a bigger refund!

I will be using ATM and my non Thai credit cards to survive here.

    If I decide to stay......

So do you earn untaxed income from abroad or online and bring it onshore to Thailand? because if you don't then there is no tax nonsense you have to worry about. The amendment to the existing tax law is designed to collect money from people who previously didn't have to pay tax on their untaxed income abroad as long as they didn't bring it onshore in the same tax year as it was earned. Unfortunately, we may have to start supplying more information but if your earnings are taxed in your home country and that country has a double taxation agreement with Thailand then it will not be taxed again. If your earnings in your home country are only small and do not reach the threshold for taxation they still will not be taxed in Thailand because your earnings were assessed for tax purposes and none was due therefore your earnings are not untaxed but taxed assessed and zero payment required.

The Central Bank of Thailand limits the amounts sent offshore by bank transfer to  around the equivalent of GBP 10, 000 per day the actual ThB amount being dependent on the retail bank's buying rate at point of transfer.

A year ago my Thai wife txd the maximum amount daily several times using her bank's online App ( now dropped by the bank in favour of a Mobile app useless to old eyes!) We just filled in the online form. No personal contact with the bank.

So that is around 44000 baht which is what the OP wanted to send so maybe he's just over the limit and simply needs to send in two tranches

Maybe the "proof you’re free to marry certificate" is the Khor Ror (คร) 2 Marriage Registration paper that's available from the local District Office. Perhaps something lost in translation. Usually printed off while you wait, 20 baht at our local office.

That would make sense. I've never heard of the 'free to marry certificate request'

  7. My catarrh is caused by mild asthma. I used to have to use an inhaler when I lived in the UK but the hot humid weather is good for me but I still get some catarrh in the mornings. The Netti pot is good advice

  8. I used to take meds for minor high BP but after I retired and moved to Thailand my BP started to get low like the OP so I stopped my meds and monitored my BP every day for 2 weeks and it is now normal. I didn't start any healthy exercise or drink less but I have a much less stressful life here and I eat a lot more vegetables. It's now been 18 months meds free and my BP is still normal.

Esteemed members -i will need two medications renewed shortly   Do I need an RX from a doctor ?

The two medications are  losartan  and Hydrochloroth Iazide

    thank you

Barbiturates and opiate-based drugs are the only ones in reality that need an official prescription. Just take your meds in any pharmacy and they will sell you the generic version over the counter.

So, visiting her country of birth and using that countries health service? I know that's a no-no for the UK's NHS. (Have to wait 3 years for returning residents.)

Returning UK citizens do not have to wait 3 years. You simply have to prove you have returned and are resident in the UK to get full access to the NHS.

This is a few years ago, but I was flying domestically out of BKK (not sure of the airport or the domestic carrier (the one that smiles or the one that knocks on wood) but while getting my boarding pass printed at the counter, I gave them my pink Thai ID... They wanted my passport... I resisted... they really wanted my passport... Finally they relented and gave me the boarding pass.

Sometimes, when entering security, the ID checker will need to check with a higher up before passing me through.... I don't know maybe I just have one of those faces!

Your pink ID card has your name transliterated into Thai so the flight needs to be booked with your Thai-translated name. If you use your Thai driving licence then your name is in English and that can be used to book your flight.

Agreed; I bought one already for $12 usd. This return flight is in 25 days. I'm probably overthinking it, but if they ask me how long I'm going to stay, do I say 25 days per that ticket, or 58 days per my condo booking receipt?

First of all, immigration never asks about return or onward tickets only the airlines. It is an official rule which is why airlines ask as they have to fly you back home if denied entry. It's not a policy decision of the airline but just depends on how sharp your check-in agent is. The rules for travelling are supplied by IATA and appear on the screen as you check-in. I recently travelled to Perth WA and on the return flight to Bangkok my wife and son were denied boarding as they didn't have a return/onward flight (I had a re-entry permit). They had travelled on their UK passports but both are Thai citizens so on producing their Thai passports the problem went away, but my point is they WERE asked so all the ppl who say I haven't been asked in 20 years are not helping anybody. BTW you are overthinking it so don't offer up your $12 ticket unless the check-in agent asks and at immigration just hand in your passport and boarding card for the flight you arrived on then he/she will stamp you in for 30 days. Enjoy.

Maybe because the police file the case in the waste paper bin?

The victim’s grandmother said she filed a complaint at Waeng Noi Police Station in Khon Kaen and Bangkok Yai Police Station in Bangkok. However, the officers have not provided any update on the case. Suay reported that the police have not even questioned the victim in the investigation.

This is likely to give the perpetrator time to raise the necessary funds  I bet he has been questioned unofficially.
