  1. The best one has to be the traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing on Suthep Road, right next to Suan Dok Hospital. Even with the lights on red, pedestrians half way across (some hobbling with nurses helping them), the traffic still speeds by.

The only one traffic seems to stop for is at Thapae Gate next to Black Canyon, the rest drivers just ignore. I was crossing at the one on Huay Kaew Road outside the 7-11 in front of CMU and a car almost took my nose off. It was so close that I managed to give it a good slap on its way past and the driver actually stopped further down the road. Instead of walking back to me to see what happened, he skipped off quickly to get some noodles.

I await the usual posts from CMTVers saying how good the driving is in our fair city...

  2. :D Thought this thread was about favourite late night venues, not about certain posters delusions that every female Thai university student only fancy guys their grandfather's age.............. :P

Dunno about others, but I frequent late night joints for copious drinking, having a laugh with friends and watching the furniture fly when the Benmore reaches boiling point :D Whilst occasionally shit happens and we end up taking someone home, my experiences remind me bedding someone at 4 a.m. when you're as drunk as a skunk, is usually uncool, unwise and a waste of time :D:D:D Just go out to party :D well, OK and maybe collect the odd phone number :P

The direction this thread is taking maybe suggests some people do only go out to pester university students believing a 60 something Farang is second only to adonis in the fancability stakes :D ; the reason why many venues don't like such punters and some posters are reluctant to share the best places. :)

Hot tip: if you speak Thai and really want to try your luck with students try some of the bars in and around Santitham plaza, JDMarket/Lotus Kamtieng and Muen Dam Pra Kot earlier in the evening.

P.S. Another good late night restaurant is the seafood place past Park Hotel on Changklan. Then of course there's always the classic Koi Chiang Mai (Spelling?) on Sri Poom.

    Exactly!

Thanks for the other suggestions of late night places Paagai.

  3. What's the name of that club that used to be where Simon Chiang Mai was located? It seemed friendly enough, if a little dark and loud.

Its called "Differ", haven't been for a while but AFAIK its still there, and open til 6

Another one in the same area is Zanta (Iyara Hotel) on Chottana opposite Radjapat also open til early morning and packed with students. Used to be good in its former life as Rodeo.

See, Femi fan I'm not selfish after all, I can tell you all the best places :D And don't worry, you won't see me there........ :D

I go to Zanta and Differ so just as a warning for others so they're not disappointed, they're very Thai with no English speaking staff and they don't sell beer and whisky by the glass is about half the price of the bottle as they're completely set up for groups to buy a bottle and mixers.

What's the current closing time at these two places? Still 6.00 a.m.? Last Saturday Zanta still had a million motosai outside at 3.00 a.m.

I was at Differ last night and it closed at about 4am. Thanks for telling me it had moved :) I used to love going when it was behind Rodeo. It has managed to keep the same vibe which is great.

  4. Sorry to have to be the one to spoil your perceptions, Stevie, but all young Thai university girls prefer older mature foreigners to younger, cheaper, desperate for true love foreigners. As you grow older you will realize this so don't despair and don't take this as a personal attack.

Again, I have to point out that the cover charges and no foreigner's policies are not directed at older mature men and in no way are older foreigners desperate and leching. Terms like wise, secure and worldly would be better used to describe them. Traits that young and pretty Thai women find endearing and attractive. Money helps but it is a true sense of respect that brings them around.

Before I expose this as complete BS, could you state what age you consider to be 'mature' getgoin?

Regardless if you intend to expose something, the truth is the truth. Maturity is relative. Obviously since you are offended that Thai university girls prefer mature men you may have not reached that plateau.

And we are having stimulating discourse, no bashing intended.

I'm not offended at all getgoin as I am in the group you are arguing for. However, saying that "all young Thai university girls prefer older mature foreigners" is a long way from the truth. Take the university girls who, during their time at university here, choose to study abroad or take part in the Work & Travel program. If what you said was correct, then all these girls would hook up with older, more mature foreign guys in the US, the UK or wherever they go. Sorry, but it's just not the truth. In fact, almost none of these girls do what you claim. Almost all of them who end up dating while abroad go for someone their own age.

Obivously Thai university girls will find it difficult to find foreign guys their own age because they're, wait for it, studying at university in their own countires! For the guys I know lucky enough to be studying in Chiang Mai (at university or an international school), almost all of them are dating Thai girls their own age.

I didn't take your post as bashing, I just think that your truth is a long way from what happens at the Thai universities I've taught at.

  6. Aside from all the unconstructive posts, the list so far is:

Chiangmai bar next to Discovery, Inside Park, Spicy or the open-air van, V-club, Mandalay/The Dark, Bossy, Vit club, two gay Karaoke places and MaejoMan's secret clubs he frequents that only let 'members' in (not pricks).

What are Inside Park and Vit Club like? Indoor/outdoor? Music?

    Any more places???

  7. Not talking about the actual definition of tourist or expat here. Just for fun: if you have experienced (or are able to do) the following 10 things you are a real expat. If not you're still in the tourist category:

    1) You can order a dish in Thai other than the most common dishes (:pad thai, sweet n sour, fried rice, etc)

    2) You know why Thai people where yellow shirts on Monday and Light blue on Friday

    3) You've tried the bugs, snake, frogs (or something alike) more than once

    4) You have at least 5 CD's of Thai karaoke music

    5) You wear Thai gold

    6) More than once you were the only farang at a party

    7) You eat more barbequed food here than anywhere you've ever been

    8) More than one chilli pepper in your dish does not make you run to the toilet anymore

    9) You've been here during the good old times: 3 big bottles of chang = 100 baht

    10) There was a time you've not wore shoes for more than 2 months and went everywhere on slippers

again it is not too serious, just for fun. just motivate your answer: agree of disagree?

#4 - How about being paid to be in one? My friends & relatives in England had a right laugh at it.

  8. If you got girls already to lube up, a great place to cap them off is at Bossy which is down on that Japanese karaoke street near CM lan . maybe someone else can give better directions.

I wouldnt go there to pick up new ones though, as most will stick to their tables.

What the hel* kind of language is that? I thought I was hip and knew street slang, but I'm stumped with this one.

    Please enlighten!

Another question, where is a good place for a mid-thirties, expat farang to go to meet single girls (not bar girls)?

Warm Up, Monkey Club (depends what your 'spec' is)

    Very nicely put.

I didn't realise Bossy was open after-hours. I remember the place on the other side of the street though - Jam - that used to be a laugh with all the fallout from the karaoke joints in CM Land.

  10. How many times has fabrique been shut down for selling uppers in their cocktails now?

Eh???? Thought Fabrique had only been open a few months? At least with that name, though maybe was something else before? Are you thinking of somehwere else?

    At least once.

It opened last year (as Fabrique). Not sure if it was a different club before that.

  11. do thais have to pay too?

i don't think fabrique is all that anyway. most of the time i went there the music sucked and it's just people sitting around tables getting drunk. i suppose if you are a guy in your early 20s it is a good place to meet pretty thai chicks.

edit: they do have a great outdoors area

    No they don't.

Agreed, the music could be better (same for almost every club in CM), but at least it's a step in 'the right direction' for clubs in CM.

As you said, the outdoors area is great.

  12. So where is this Fabrique place, and what is the compelling reason to get in, ProdigalSon?

If a bar/disco/etc. has a discriminatory policy or don't like farang, I have no problem going up the street to the hundreds of other places in this fair city that welcome me.

Personally I have never encountered this treatment here.

It's in the President Hotel, just off the north-east corner of the moat. Reason to get in? It's probably the best after-hours club in CM. Unfortunately there aren't hundreds of other places you can go to at about 2am if you want to carry on partying.

  13. Just a heads up, so be ready to do one of the following:

    1) pay up

    2) speak enough Thai to talk your way around it

    3) take a copy of your work permit (sounds like a pain in the arse, but remember Thais have to carry their ID cards)

    4) leave in disgust

    And then?

Strange. I thought all the weirdos had left town.

    And then what???

If you choose 1,2 or 3 then you go into the club.

If you choose 4 then you go somewhere else.

What 'weirdos' are you talking about BB?

  14. That's the spirit bdenner get behind the team. :)

Come on man where's that famed Aussie grit. If English fans had taken that attitude over much of the past 20 years we'd have packed up long ago.

All the signs are that it will be a great, competitive series.

Any chance of an extra 10% discount if we show a British passport (for a beer to cry in)?

  15. Well, it's here again the greatest cricket tournament in the world, The Ashes.

Forget, colourful clown outfits, one dayers or American style 20/20 slugfests, this is REAL cricket, where tickles down to fine leg and driving through the covers will show what REAL cricket is all about.....and REAL cricketing colours will be worn (White). I'm really looking forward to sharing some banter with my many Aussie pals, who are already trembling at the thought of not having McGrath to tie up one end whilst Warne creates havoc from the other....it's going to be GREAT...it always is, regardless of who wins.

So, where are people going to watch it?

Who is showing all 5 tests?

Is anyone giving a special on beers for The Ashes series...they do in UK and Oz?

Just enjoyed the first day's coverage from Sky on WETV. Great stuff.

Are WETV now broadcasting SKY Sports? When I had WETV it was only the South African Super Sports they showed. Would good be good to know if it is SKY, as there are a few sports Super Sports do not broadcast.

    Iain

You're right Iain - it's still the same SA Super Sports channel, but they're using the SKY coverage from England (with Beefy, Bumble, Nasser, et al)

  17. Like you I used to drink Singha when I first came to LOS as a tourist but there are much better beers around these days. Chang is one I have always disliked so I cant comment but the one which I think is by far the best is Leo, it`s maybe more popular in Isaan but it is a great beer give it a try.

    Totally agree.

Very few of my friends in Chiang Mai drink Chang. Most foreigners I see drinking it are tourists, not expats. It may be due to Chang's marketing in the UK. Heineken seems to be the most popular where I am.

    1 - Agree

2 - Agree, but not sad enough to actually let it influence my clothing choices in the morning. Any foreigner who follows this colour code should be deported.

3 - Disagree - none of my Thai friends have even tried any of those listed.

    4 - Disagree (similar reason to #3)

5 - Agree/Disagree - only wear Thai gold if you're extremely baan nork.

6 - Disagree - I went to more parties where I was the only foreigner in the first year I was here.

    7 - Agree

    8 - Disagree - My stomach's always been weak!!!

9 - You can still get it at that price in some places.

10 - Totally disagree. I used to wear flip-flops when I was first here, but now I'm the total opposite. You're just asking for trouble if you go to Warm Up in flip-flops.

  20. And didn't cry like a little girl like Fed usually does.

Actually Roddick broke Federer twice and Fed only broke Roddick once.

Tennis has become a one-dimmensional, boring, repetitious replay. Serve big and trot along the baseline. It's all any of them do anymore.

You're right. In the end it just came down to a couple of loose shots in his final service game. I actually had some money on Federer to win, but come the final I was really hoping Roddick would do it. I bet he's still gutted.

It's funny how about a decade ago, people were complaining that Wimbledon was just about the big serve-volleyers (Sampras, Ivanisevic, etc). Rallies would just last one serve, or maybe with a return and one volley. Since they've reduced the ball pressure, there aren't any serve-volleyers left. I know Federer served 50-odd aces in that final, but there were some immense rallies (20+ strokes).

  21. Hard not to be smug when you're the greatest ever (by results). He was humble long enough (in particular when he was literally was the greatest when no one could do anything against him... until Nadal came along).

    :)

    And Murray

    Well Done Roger.

Rodick you bloody cry baby - accept defeat by a better player.

I thought Roddick took it pretty well. At least he didn't make any excuses which is what Federer usually does.
