  1. I quite enjoy putting although I normally only play for fun, so there's little pressure on me. The only time I really got the shakes was when a had a put to shoot my lowest score - I could barely swing I was shaking so much!

Most of the courses I play in Chiang Mai are very short and so the greens are often made extra-challenging (for the gamblers as I was told by a local green keeper). For those of you who are familiar with the second hole at Hang Dong, I bet, as I have, you've had to chip back on to the green after your first putt once or twice!

  2. I hardly ever use my driver as I'm way too inconsistent with it. From the tee I usually go with my 4 hybrid which I can carry up to 250 with a smooth hit, and from there it can then do anything from plugging to rolling another thirty yards depending on the state of the fairway and my trajectory.

I agree with the OP as to striving for long and straight, but given the choice I would go for straight (hence me hardly ever taking driver from the tee) over long.

If you look at the world's top twenty, only two of them (McIllroy & Scott) are in the top twenty for length of the tee. Where most of the top players make up their scores is in the putts gained per round and the up & down stats.

On most of the PGA courses players can pretty much put it anywhere from the tee and still post a good score (hence the last Ryder Cup set up). Look at the recent US Open and being long off the tee wasn't as important as keeping it in play.

    Small remark..:

The PGA driving stats doesn't take into account the club used. In addition, driving is not always measured on a hole where players hit driver. This means there's a discrepancy between who is a "big hitter" and the PGA stats. For instance, Henrik Stenson is ranked 58th in Driving Distance, but he rarely uses a driver. Because he's so big off the tee he can play a shorter club and gain accuracy, that is why he's ranked 6th in Driving Accuracy. I think he was 1st in Total Driving until US Open.

There's a massive advantage being big off the tee. This has been debated over and over again, the advantage distance/accuracy was the reason they decided to restrict the grooves (simply because players didn't give a flying fig as to where the ball ended up as long as they gained distance. Easier to make birdie with 130 yards to go from the long stuff, than from 200 from the short stuff.

That's an interesting point - thanks for that (!) ForeThat. I wasn't aware they didn't consider the club used on the measured holes.

  4. Google 'Thailand integrated tariff database' and the first website in the list of results should be the official list of customs tariffs. This website gives a complete breakdown of the import duties due on goods that are stopped at customs when coming into the country.

As the previous poster said, avoid using the major couriers and stick with the regular postal service of the country you're shipping from.

  5. Yeah that is right 100baht for a Wednesday is the right price to pay for a movie treat !

Great mall, great cinemas.....I suggest everyone head there and forget about Major Cineplex at Airport Plaza.

Great mall, great cinemas but are the movies any good? By good at the very least I mean anything other than the mind numbing crap at Major Cineplex!

Same same (but not different) I'm afraid!

  6. In a nutshell, they're making improvements to the footpath and landscaping.

There's also an issue with sellers that have had to move back across the street and have been causing problems with other sellers by taking up more floor space than they're legally entitled too.

  7. I concur with WTK, too. Midnight is 12am and noon is 12pm.

At the time of typing, it is 8.47pm (20:47), May 9th. In just over three hours it will be 11.59 pm (23:59), May 9th. One minute after that we will be at midnight (00:00), the calendar will show May 10th and so it will be 12 am as it is the start of a new day. How can 12 pm be midnight when it is not even the same day?

I'm guessing the OP is just trolling (which makes my post a complete waste of time!).

  8. Glad to see they've finally got around to banning anchoring.

All these people complaining of the yips while putting - just sort yourselves out. Jeeze, I get the yips standing on the first tee at any golf course where there are a dozen other golfers watching me tee off - what help do I get?

I suffer from a bad back too and by far the worst thing is swinging with short wedge, not putting as there's so little range of motion - just try to keep your back as straight as possible and bend from the waist.

Now if Tiger used an anchored putting stroke, we'd have a whole new argument...

  9. Could anyone elaborate on the directions to this place? Thanks.

As you're heading into Mae Rim from Chiang Mai, go straight on at the first set of lights (just past Green Valley Golf Course) and carry on into the town until you reach another set of lights. Take a left at these lights and go up the road for about two hundred meters. Mae Rim Plaza will be on your right (there's a sign for it, but only in Thai I think).

The restaurant is towards the back of the plaza, on the middle left (if that makes any sense!).

I think it opens at 11 at closes at 8.30.

  10. Just had lunch there and it was delicious. I had two plates of the pork sausage, one with French fries and the other with mashed potato. Both were served with a small salad and were very well presented.

The lunchtime menu starts at 79 baht and has chicken/pork/ham steaks and sausages which include the aforementioned accompaniments. There's also a more expensive evening menu with fish, spareribs, Angus steaks, that range in price from 230 to 500 baht.

The chef told me that you can bring your own wine and there's no corkage charge (but if you want to drink from wine glasses, then you'll have to bring your own!).

The only 'negative' is that there's no aircon.

I will definitely be going back.

  11. Hi all

I'm looking for recommendations for a kitchen. So far I've been to Homepro, Living Mall, SB, Modern Form and Homikitch and was wondering if any TVers have had experiences with these or any other kitchen fitters in Chiang Mai.

I'm looking for something in the 'mid-range' which for me is around 150k give or take a little.

I'd be happy to hear of any good recommendations or places to avoid.

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Having read the link given in post #139 I can see no reason (aside from financial) why he should not have been disqualified. The officials, in my opinion, have just made themselves look daft arriving at this decision as they simply have not followed their own rules and seem to have made up circumstances to be able to bend them.

As for the previous comments claiming tennis players would never overrule the officials to their own detriment, well it happens all the time - especially on key points.

  13. I was at Stardome on Saturday evening hitting a few balls and there was a small promotion stand where you could try, for free, to chip balls into a basket to win tickets to this weeks Asian Tour event at Alpine. I assume they will be doing it all week, so if you were planning on going to watch the golf, go and try to win yourself some free tickets at Stardome.

  14. Customs charge a fixed percentage (I think 18% for clubs) of the value marked on the package. If there's no value marked, then they will estimate it themselves. All of the customs rates are listed on the Thai customs website.

I remember ordering a full set of Mizuno irons on eBay and paid about 1,500 baht in duties. It's a good idea to contact the seller and ask them to mark a 'special' price on the package (although some may not be prepared to do this).

As the previous poster said, order as many as you can to save on postage.
