I agree completely, I was just trying to find the source of all the media reports on the net, and I fail to find it, maybe someone can shed some light into it? for example if a Myanmar lawyer say something, you would expect to find a clip somewhere with an interview or something else that can verify that report.

Never rely on media reports that have the word "reportedly" in it.

It is very probable that the Myanmar guys was tortured but in all the press it is "reportedly" so, while the RTP says they did not torture without using the word "reportedly".

The Myanmar guys "reportedly" withdrew their confessions while the RTP says they have not withdrawn their confessions without using the word "reportedly".

The Myanmar Embassy lawyers "reportedly" said the suspects in the case had bruises on their bodies from torture, while in the meantime we have not heard a word from any Myanmar lawyer except from what is reportedly reported in the press.

Again it isn't the "evidence" that needs to be in question but the processes..

the words allegedly and reportedly are used in the media as by-words to avoid prosecution but still get across the general i=da - they therefore don't mean anything is "proven" or not.

In the case of a criminal investigation in most countries the accused has a presumption of innocence ands to make definitive statements about the accused or the case can only prejudice the proceedings (see this case in particular) however most of the wester press is following normal procedure by us=ing words such as reportedly and allegedly.

They serve a purose and enable a broadening of the discussion.

  3. There is a simple solution to this dilemma, Do not try or be duped into Bribing a Police officer. Better to just play along with the whole ticket thing, take the ticket, go to the police station and do the pay ticket routine at the station. It will cause you to loose time and money, but better that than the risk of getting arrested for bribing a Police officer.

  4. There is of course a very urgent and important need to find, arrest and punish the murderers.

However this will not solve the root problem as TAT seems to think.

The root problem is this question: "Is it safe for tourists to visit Thailand?. Especially if you are young, female, attractive and used to ware clothes that would not in any way be offending or inviting in the West, but here in Thailand is an open invitation to rape and murder?"

On this question the answer must be categorically "NO".

  5. DNA from Semen could clear up where the semen came from.

Is it Asian semen or Western semen?

    http://www.iape.org/emanual/biological_evidence.htm

The link provided specifically says race cannot be determined (in red lettering). However I think that is not correct and may be old information. I clearly remember a discovery program I watched where they traced the migration of humans out of Africa towards Asia and Australia only by using DNA from thousands of samples.

Also since the female victim did have a a hair sample in her hand, the hair from an Asian and Caucasian is very different. Of course there is no evidence the Hair is from the perpetrator but should be enough to nudge the investigation towards a certain direction (or maybe it already has?).

  6. From the news this morning on Thai TV it seems the Military is acting on the complaints by Thai customers that was scammed. Thai customers has been filing complaints for years with the local police but nothing happened of course. They interviewed some restaurant owner who showed their menu with the uber prices in front of the camera, then the report switched to the complainants who said they where shown a totally different menu when they ordered the food, and that menu which they ordered from had reasonable prices.

Of course it is OK to scam "falang" but when the scam affects Thai people it seems it is time to take serious action.

  7. Price for a "som tam" is between 30 and 50 Baht for food stalls anywhere around Pattaya and somwhere in the vicinitiy. If you go anywhere close to a restaurant n those regions it is very much more. But how complicated can it be? Get mortar, a boink boink vessel and start bock bock away, talk about primitive coocking lol any idiot can mortar away a spicy salad. let us start talking about the cuisine of southern France for example, are there any "bock bock" and spicy salad there?

  8. "Some of these dishes such as the Thai papaya salad or “Som Tam” and grilled squid were priced at around 300 baht and 500 baht respectively, which were more than twice the prices of what most restaurants in Thailand would offer."

I am not sure what restaurants they refer to, But at my favorite restaurants both in Pattaya, Bangsray, Chonburi and upcountry the price for "som Tam" is about 30 Baht and grilled Squid I never ordered as I do not understand why anyone would eat that stuff?

  9. I will never forget one of my first visits to Thailand years ago in Bangkok me and my friends was looking for this famous Seafood restaurant (cant remember the name now) somewhere in Bangkok and we had the name and address. We entered the meter taxi of the street and told him to go there.

So now we are on the way and the driver tells us the place just recently burnt down to the ground......Very sad but nobody died. Now he knew this other place he can drive us to.....

And then we got scammed at that place with kg/uncooked thing scam, and after that few days after of course we found out that the place we didn't go to was still running, in fact a guest at the same hotel was there the same evening! And of course we realized Mr. Taxi Driver got a percentage of the deal dunno how much but sure somebody can fill me in as the scam most certainly is ongoing.

Talk about feeling stupid! But its also a part of the charm of Thailand as long as it does not go overboard as with the restaurants in Hua Hin.

  10. suppose this has been said already here....I would never enter a restaurant where the prices are not clearly shown or stated otherwise. Secondly many restaurants have both English/Foreign menus and Thai menus, If they give me a Foreign language menu when I sit, I will always ask for the Thai menu alongside, if they then refuse I leave a look for another restaurant, I suppose this is an old trick by the restaurants but its still around where I live in part (note the Foreign Language menu is always about 50% more expensive). Another thing they do is to quote the price in Kg/uncooked, especially with seafood. Now uncooked and cooked weight has a big difference in these restaurants:)))

and so on....The Thai Scams just go on and on.

70,000 overstayers in one year. That puts things into perspective somewhat! Good riddance to the beach bum pot head scum bags that give the law abiding visa legal folk a bad name!

Ohh!? the posts have numbers? didn't see that before....

  12. Just a comment for information: It is now possible to scan smartcards (creditcards), magnetic strip cards remotely just by standing close to someone with a card in their pocket.

There are products on the market to protect against this (jammers) that is essentially a small wallet with jamming protection. Some even have an alarm when it is being scanned.

The card scimming device that the Spaniard used is apparently stone age tech already.
