  1. Just a comment for information: It is now possible to scan smartcards (creditcards), magnetic strip cards remotely just by standing close to someone with a card in their pocket.

There are products on the market to protect against this (jammers) that is essentially a small wallet with jamming protection. Some even have an alarm when it is being scanned.

The card scimming device that the Spaniard used is apparently stone age tech already.

  2. This is a good thing.

Get a work permit and work visa. Pay your bloody taxes. Then you'll have no problem.

This visa run thing has gone on long enough. One of the good things that will come out of this is we will have less 'teachers' now. We really don't need all this riff raff 'teachers' whose only qualification is speaking the language and being white. High time this country hired real English teachers.

Would that real English teacher be from Preston, Lancaster perhaps?

  3. As I understand, all visas in every passport is accompanied by a stamp with extension of stay, at least all the visas I have got over the years. The extension of stay is granted normally until the visa expires. Everyone staying in Thailand on whatever visa must report every 90 days to immigration without exception.

There is no visa to expire after you enter the country only a permit to stay. Most peoples visa would of expired (90 days) long before their extended permit to stay.

Any stay longer than 90 days requires you to report to immigration.

Yes Ubonjoe you are correct, after checking my passport again, there is actually no visa in there, just the extension of stay permit and then what I thought was the visa is actually only a re-entry permit (it helps to read the stuff under all the stamps sometimes:)). And when extending the stay when you are already in the country there will be no visa either, just the extension of stay permit.

Sorry if I caused confusion about the visa.

You appear to have an extension of say based upon teaching from immigration not a visa. You mention doing 90 day reports (they renew nothing) which you would not be doing if you had a visa.

Your extension of stay ends when your job ends meaning you must leave the country or apply for a 7 day extension when you cancel your extension. The school should give you.a letter stating the date your ends and you need to on that date or shortly before.

You or your school also need to cancel your workpemit.

OP, I have read the rest of the posts in the thread, sorry to hear about your predicament. Just to emphasize what Joe said above reference the letter from the school and cancelling the work permit.

You need to speak with the school and explain your situation about having to leave (or get the 7 day extension) to find out what date they will give to stop your employment. This is necessary before you find yourself in an overstay situation which will only add to your misfortune.

You don't want to find that they have already stopped your contract. That said, they should be responsible for giving you adequate notice before ending your employment. Check your contract.

For OP situation I feel with you, Chrisinth advice is what I would follow, depending on your relation with your employer, they should give you like 3 months notice, In present situation they must allow your employment to continue (with or without pay) for another 3 months or so to give you time to sort your stuff.

  5. Officially no foreigner is a resident unless they have a "residence permit" that one can obtain after staying legally in Thailand on consecutive visas for 3 years (or was it 2 years? getting old).

The residence permit cost somewhere around 200,000 Baht and a large amount of paper work. After paying there is no guarantee that one will actually get it, so money is lost.

So if that is what they mean by resident, just staying here does not mean one is a resident oficially.

Am I missing something? Where are the taxi mofia there? There is the AOT taxi desk by the luggage carousel, which is the only licensed and insured private cars and then there is the metered taxi cue outside where one pays a standard airport fee plus the meter charge, I have never heard of them turning down destinations.

I *THINK* they are referring to the touts who hang out around the exit of customs offering taxis to people? They seem to clean them up once and year and then they slowly come back.

But I always end up using the taxi que and have never had a problem.

If you look a little closer you will see a guy behind the ticket counter at the meter taxi stand who is the real boss and decides what taxi get what fare.

Years back I had my morning coffee at a friends place in Patong. Along comes a guy who spend the night at the beach and asked for help finding his hotel. No idea about the name. The key had no indication of the name either. He only remembered it was close to a 7-11. ... so we grabbed him a motorbike taxi and asked to visit all 7-11 in Patong... Never saw him again, assuming he found his place.

Maybe he is still looking?? Lol

    Maybe it's the same guy:)))

  8. Funny how Thai Politics and justice works...

If the Prime minister had been another person who was loved, respected and supported by all people and political factions and did the same thing as PM YL did, the case had not even gone to court I believe.

But I suppose this is valid for any country in various degrees?
