  1. Below is an unaltered extract from Mayo Clinic's website:

Blood pressure measurements fall into four general categories:

    • Normal blood pressure. Your blood pressure is normal if it's below 120/80 mm Hg. However, some doctors recommend 115/75 mm Hg as a better goal. Once blood pressure rises above 115/75 mm Hg, the risk of cardiovascular disease begins to increase.
    • Prehypertension. Prehypertension is a systolic pressure ranging from 120 to 139 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure ranging from 80 to 89 mm Hg. Prehypertension tends to get worse over time.
    • Stage 1 hypertension. Stage 1 hypertension is a systolic pressure ranging from 140 to 159 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure ranging from 90 to 99 mm Hg.
    • Stage 2 hypertension. More severe hypertension, stage 2 hypertension is a systolic pressure of 160 mm Hg or higher or a diastolic pressure of 100 mm Hg or higher.

Both numbers in a blood pressure reading are important. But after age 60, the systolic reading is even more significant. Isolated systolic hypertension — when diastolic pressure is normal but systolic pressure is high — is a common type of high blood pressure among people older than 60.

  2. I've sold the 1st condo that I purchased and bought a 2nd and only transferred money into Thailand for the 1st.

But in doing so I still needed proof of international transfer, from my bank, to satisfy the Land Office Department.

To obtain this proof I needed to show them (the bank) a copy of the original money transfer document, and a copy of the Land's Office document which show that I have sold and transferred the original condo. They (the Bank) also required a copy of the receipt showing the taxes paid.

Once I produced these documents, and B100, a letter from the Bank was forth coming in a matter of minutes. Armed with this letter the purchase transfer of this 2nd condo presented no problems at the Land Office.

  3. Been living in Thailand for near on 11 years. I've visited the Aust Embassy as and when required. Never had a real problem with their service, but do agree their prices are really over the top.

However the one thing that always gets under my skin is that they seem to be always showing TV from another country. I have reported this to the staff and all I've ever received was 'sorry'.

Obviously the EMBASSY IS NOT PROUD OF OUR OWN (Government) NETWORK.

    I call this situation UNAUSTRALIAN

  4. My condo is on the SW Corner of the building. During my 1st summer here it was very hot, so I had double glazed (slightly tinted) windows with new alum frames installed.

I also purchased new block-out curtains. I close and open them, one at a time, as the sun moves around the building.

I also have a thermometer which shows indoor and outdoor temps.

I can guarantee that now I get upwards of 5 degrees cooler inside (without using an ac).

It was expensive, but worth the cost, in my opinion

  5. I regret to advise of the passing of David Sampson (formally of West’s Restaurant off Huay Kaew and more recent of Compass Restaurant on Charoenprathet Road) on Thursday the 23rd July 2014.

He died in hospital in Melbourne, Australia, of respiratory failure caused by a tumour in his throat. His passing was peaceful. May he RIP

We wish ‘Kon’, his business partner in both above ventures, all the very best in the continuation of Compass.

  6. illinge, I moved here 10 years ago, & I'm also about 10 years younger than you. But on arrival 'life began again' for me.

You, being 80 & thinking of relocating to Thailand, all I can say is 'go for it'.

When it comes to the stage when you may need assistance / looking after then there are a number of alternatives here in Thailand, with a higher standard of service & at a lower cost, than you can obtain in Aust

  7. illinge, G'day Mate Like others have said it would be almost impossible for anyone (over the age of 65) to obtain hospital / medical insurance here in Thailand.

You mentioned that you have insurance back home, is that private or medicare?

If its private you will need to talk to your provider (to see if you would be covered here in Thailand, but I think most likely you would have to return home to be covered).

If it's medicare you will only be covered in Aust, with the proviso that you retain your Aust Residency (ie if you take up residency in Thailand then you will loose your Aust Residency - residency is not the same as nationality).

  8. Over the years I have bought 2 Mazda sedans, from the dealer on Mahidol Road. For me their pre and after delivery service has been excellent, far better than what I got back in my old country. English speaking - like anywhere in the LOS can be a bit testing

  9. The Pool on the roof of Hillside 4 is reserved for those living on the top (15th) floor. However ALL owners (irrespective of level) pay for the upkeep of this pool.

So why would anyone want to buy there with such conditions / restrictions ?

  10. I have a fridge that is surplus to our requirements. My partner suggests we send it to Issan,

as it would be very much appreciated by 'The Family'.

Is / are there freighters that go from Chiang Mai to Burri Ram? The would have to be

door to door (Tambon to Tambon).

    Appreciate any advice

  11. I have just bought a condo, from a falang that lives overseas. The electricity account is in her name, as is the meter deposit. With my passport and the chanote I visited the local PEA to change all into my name, & was advised that I need a yellow house book.

More recently I visited the Amphur Office & was told that I need

    * A letter from Immigration (as proof of my residential address )

    * A copy of my passport

    * A copy of the Chanote

*A copy of the Blue House Book,

    * Two witnesses

and that I will need an interview.

  12. 8 year ago I bought a condo solely in my name, here in Thailand. The money for this purchase was transferred via the international banking network, and therefore my bank was able to produce a letter to this effect.

I have now sold this condo and am in the process of purchasing another. In discussions with my lawyer was advised that I would again need to prove the source of the finance.

Fortunately, or so I thought, I was able to located the letter, from the bank, that I used some 8 years ago. I showed this to my lawyer, who rang the Land Office. Was advised as this letter was specific (i.e. it identified the unit being purchased) it couldn’t be used again. My lawyer was dumfounded (& by the way so was I). He was also, at this time, unable to offer any real solution.

So, fellow members, I’m asking your advice. What are my options????

  13. Next week I will be flying into Suvarnabhumi & need advice on how to get to BKK Hosp @ Huay Khuang.

Website maps are of little use, but from what I can gather I should take-

    Airport Link to Makkasan

    MRT to Huai Khwang

    then Taxi to the Hosp.

Is this the best way? Could someone pls confirm/advise.

    Many tks
