  1. If you want to get a visual of what BKK was like, say, 50 years or so ago, go visit Vientiane in Laos and that might give you a pretty good idea.

but please hurry-up.the city is catching up rapidely with the rest of the (modern )world.

Sitting on the bank of the mighty(dry) Mekong river at night sipping Lao(33) beer and munching barbecued anything and everything and retreating to some laid-back beerjoints later in the night.

BUT ladies of the night are available, just dont let you catch with one intimate, could land you in the dungeon for a while.

Poeple are friendly and nice like Thais were before the 80s.

Thailand has cetrainly changed and the poeples as well Because of our Western culture/livestyle and strange attitudes and laissez fair.

I would not mind to live there with my small pension, which can reach far,a lot of Francaise poeple have moved there, french is the second language in Laos, btw.

  2. I have some Andonis Digitata, the Baobab/Finger tree in the garden, one is 10 years old and quite a view, now had lost (perrenialy)all his leaves, but start budding again.

This tree is a miracle plant and millions in Africa make some sort of living from that tree,in Aussie ther is even a bar cut in such a tree, which can grow for 2-5 thousend years, maybe exaggereted?

Has anybody seen or planted such a tree in Thailand.

The "Baobab" is pictured in the movie Australia and I bet a lot of Aussies get homesick seeing such a majestic tree.

PLS. do not confuse with the "Bottle Trees" planted in the botanical garden in Chiang Mai and Singapore.

  3. He is not advertising, just letting us know he has some good lamb and will be showing the footie! This is an expat site, and we need to know these sorts of things.

I am missing The Trink page =The Night Owl.

Was he banned because he sometimes pointed us to some good food, drink and girlie bars?

I lived in Mallorca Spain for 8 years, there was and is a Mallorca Daily Bulletin, aka bullshittin.

BP and the Nation nwspapers could do with some witty commentator cum collumnist to brighten up our day,I and sure most of expats are sick and tired of been sick and tired of the political disturbances.

Yes, Roast Lamb is also GOOOOd at the Busstop in soi 4 Nana(this is a guests remark,me)!

Comes with all the dressings and dont forget to laviously add the mintsauce, elbow licking good.

forgot the point,a barowner with a small FM radio station,an american had the Ricky the Lash collum inthe Daily.. Fridays, a real good Foo Man Choo quoter and very witty, anybody remember that man?

  5. my wife says its called a yang tree and they flower she calls a pin.

    correct,

the fallen flowers are collected by poeples, the inside of the flower is like a soft brush when dried, then added to food.

Quite expensive that stuff when bought in the markets.

The wood when cut/sawed is only good for construction work, very like balsa.

Has anybody any idea where balsa grows in Thailand/

I had some trees in the old lease, but cut and wasted,no use exept for modelling airplanes etc.

  6. What a difference twenty-four hours makes. This time yesterday the total number of red shirts in BKK at each of the six meeting points was reported as being woefully low (well less than 10,000 ).

Now with intelligence reporting that there has been a massive increase in numbers over the last twenty-four hours the government - or sources close to it - are reporting that a state of emergency may be declared sometime tomorrow on top of the ISA.

It's still a peaceful demonstration. Up to now there have been absolutely NO reports of violence.

What are the government scared of? Numbers.

why are Farang among the protesters, are they symphatiser or followers,

would'nd be surprised whats at stakes.

Risky isn't,just imagine one of the rednecks got kidnapped!

  7. I never hear or see a comment, positive or negative, from any other Asean country.

The policy of Not interferring in other ,s internal affairs leads to a confrontation as we experience it now in Thailand.

In Singapore all the protesters (if there is ever any large-scale streetprotest) would have landed in Changi Prison and detained untill 2525.also in Malaysia under the ISO act.

You only can stop all that protests if you share the wealth.

In Germany it took 150 yearsand a lot of negotiating with the unions until some of the wealth finally trickled down to the Volk.

If Thailand had recognised Unions then there would be official negotiation, not Ragtag streetvendors, idlers, hippies, would be rambos, roaming the streets and demanding to dissolve the House.

"99 % of the reds think dissolving the House is setting the groundfloor of a house undere water" maybe, I am a bit sarcastic but not too far off target.

Poor mislled volk, are forcefed with some real "Red " idealogy and dont know better.

  8. 80,000

No expert here but it looks far more than that.

Given that they were spread in several locations, it definitely wouldn't look anything like 80,000.

to sum up the protesters,in another country they would be branded terrorists. No one can tell me they are the Poor northern/northeastern farmers, they are sharecroppers and will do whatever for their paymaster.

The motorcycle taxi and metered taxi gangs are at work.

Beware "oh reads" of the wrath of the silent mayority, they could be in for a surprise.

  9. They will have to serve, if living in Thailand. But they can do military training at school and not be drafted. They will be part of the reserve army though. I don't know if serving in anotehr army will exempt them, some countries have that exemption in case of dual nationality, so they don't need to serve twice.

Under Thai law they don't have to make a decision on which natioanlity they would like to retain, they can have dual nationality. It might be different under their other nationality.

As Thai citizens they can own land, also as minors. If you want to build a house on the land and make a lease, get advise from a lawyer. The parents are the guardians over the property of the children, but will need prior court apporval for certain things. Also when there is a conlfict of interest court aproval is needed.

I had asked the missus to find out if the kids can own land:

The answer;she said from the Amphoe clerk was, they have dual citizenship and can only own land if they revoke the other(foreign citizenship)

I believe you, and thanks, think there might be something fishy on the wifes side of info?

She bought land in different places and names of the family, maybe its already hooked?

How can I find that out, that the land(s) in question are free of dept?(I hold now the Chanut of all the properties and locked them away), as the land plots were previously mortgaged (without me knowing it)and it cost me a arm and a leg to get it back.

I would like the kids have some property and security,as I am not soo young anymore.

Since we are on the family site:is it possible that the kids have seperate bank-accounts in their name?

My wife and I are their guardians,I like to have money for them deposited, which they only can access, say after 18 years of age.

  10. There has been hundreds of these threads and it always turns into a bitching contest of how much richer people ar nd how the <deleted> could some poor peasant live on a mere 200,000 bht, just spend what you think is right and dont worry what the Jones's next door are doing.

    wow 125,000 for rent

    that is ridiculous

Bah forget about renting a place....when the apartments I bought in Samui 125 years ago are finished I will be living like the millionaire I was born to be. :)

    Sorry,125 years ago,

are you Methusalem bdw, surerly a typo?

    125 thou a month rent + electr,+ water+dogfood catfood,car expenses = food /drinks about 350 .000 Thou a month,

I life with all the beer i can drink and pigknockles and bratwurst from Makro and and cheese from first food for about 50.000 B.

The family is Thai, they need another 10.000.thou,+ 20 Thou living allowance for the missus

that leaves me some money for saving for my hometicket sometimes

  11. it would be interesting to hear how are other parents are faring with one partner Foreigner and the other Thai.

Have two children in the early teenage bracket.

They attend to a private school here in the small provincial town.

Is there any law that the boy has to service in the armed forces when he is 18 ,here in Thailand "And / or"in the foreign country , can he choose?

When has he and his sister ,have to make up their mind what citizenship to retain, good questions eh, .

I like to give either of them a plot of land, intend to build small house on each lease, the house can be in my name??

One post in the past suggested to build a house on rollers to move somewhere, has anybody done that.

A houseboat would be a option.

Where can i buy a complete prefab house(not that one advertised in the BP for 500 Thou.looks like a doghouse to me

  12. Red shirts to move through Bangkok Monday AM

BANGKOK: -- Key anti-government red-shirt leader and Puea Thai politician, Jatuporn Promphan, has told a press conference back stage of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) rally on Rajdamnoen Avenue that the red-shirts will take their protest on the road Monday morning.

Mr. Jatuporn said the red-shirt movement had demonstrated its ability to mobilize a large number of people, demonstrating there was a large level of dissatisfaction with the current government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Though red-shirt leader Veera Musikapong earlier today (March 14) gave the government 24-hours to dissolve parliament and call fresh elections, Mr. Jatuporn said protesters would lay siege to the 11th infantry regiment in Bangkhen district where Mr. Abhisit has set up a “war room” to monitor the protest rally prior to the deadline expiring.

“We will be out the front of Mr. Abhisit’s hiding place by midday unless he agrees to dissolve the parliament and hold elections. We will start moving from here (the Rajdamnoen Avenue rallying area) starting at 9am and by midday will have the [military] base surrounded”, he said.

The comments by Mr. Jatuporn follow speculation the Government will today declare a state of emergency in Bangkok, on top of enacting the Internal Security Act (ISA) last week.

The declaration of a state of emergency will enable the military to take total charge of security in the capital, whereas the ISA only permits the military to assist the police if required.

Earlier today Royal Thai Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said an additional 20 companies of troops had been sent to protect the 11th Infantry Regiment in Bangkhen district against any invasion by red-shirts.

The 11th infantry regiment is located close to 2006 coup maker and former national army chief Sonthi Boonyaratgalin’s residence.

Bangkok Red-shirt rally - Live updates Sunday:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Bangkok-Red-...da-t347258.html

Its not tTroops and Police and SWAT Teams, the Red Scourge must be made afraid of.

A simpleVigilantes troop with appropriale weapons, like Syringes to draw the last drop, and Whips, and Billyclubs would teach em a lesson.

I am NOT inciting Hatred, simply support to take Thailand back from the Draculas.

Beware of the silent Mayority, the Missus says" Many who Cheered sang, drank on their way to BKK are not coming back home the way they were leaving".

A Great mental Disorder will befall many.

  13. Montenegro Welcomes Thaksin; To Offer Citizenship

Montenegro has announced that it welcomes Thaksin Shinawatra and is ready to offer the former Thai prime minsiter citizenship.

Thaksin earlier revealed that he is now in Montenegro, but will be returning to Dubai soon in the next few days.

    Tongue in Cheek;

The Government of Montenegro has offered Mr T-Rex to rename the Country from Montenegro(Black Mountain in Latin parlay) ,into Monte Rosso,= Red Mountain

  14. Animatic, I usually like your posts and reasoning, but this time you are giving the media too much credit.

Please note the preface; 'I suspect.'

Also the media gets it's feed from some source,

ideally 3 sources corroborating each other,

and then adds an editorial slant.

"I read the paper ever day and believe every word it says."

    NOT!

And old saw, because some actually do that.

Would I be surprised if there was attempts on Abhisits life?

Not in the least, and even less surprised if Suthep was targeted.

    Sad state of affairs.

Wow 3 sources! With all that corroboration we must then conclude that Thaksin us a magician. Earlier the Nation reported that Thaksin was in Cambodia (the PM's secretary gota a call from Dubai) , somewhere in Europe, then in Germany, finally in Montenegro.

Let's face it! There was no news it was all speculation and rumor as here "I suspect".

That shuts down the moneyline to Mister Toxin.

  15. I wonder if that's the US intelligence again?

    "Intelligence organs" ???

To liven up the sad topic,

    wouldn't be surprised,we in Bangkok have even a WATERGATE Hotel in Pratunam,check the patrons list.Maybe Tricky Dick is staying there ;

2000:36=15x 5 (hahahaha...)FYI, "ha" is the Thai number five, also laughing LOL

6 is in german sechs , pronounced sex)

  16. I admire everyone's imagination and clairvoyance of future events. :)

Meanwhile, political protests can and do happen in any part of the world without the need for martial law and rumors of coups. For example, today in Italy.

And hey, guess what, even color coding a protest isn't exclusively Thai. :D

    Back to drama-queening guys.

Some of our dear mambers posted the quip,

"why Foreigners are soo concerned what happen in Thailand with the political situation.

Well The world ,particulary UK,USA Fance etc DID appease Hitler, didnt pull the break-handle.

Some say,in order to prevent the apple from becoming a fruit ,you have to nip the bud.

I ,and others may agree, the reds must form their own political party, and have leaders from their own stock, dump the old lying polititian's change the color to somehow a friendlier color and have a partyplatform which nowadays NONE has,Farmers are promised this and that and free lunch, which isn't.

    Now the word is out,

You might be singing and dancing and wining and dining on the way to the Red_Walk, and go home bloodied and on crutches if at all.

The fear is out,the silent mayority is armed to their teeth, ready to take THEIR beloved Thailand back from the red-thugs,

Long live the Kingdom of Thailand.(not the red animal farm)

  17. My wife and her family were the ONLY people in her village who refused to take the 500B on offer to vote for Thaksin when he was still in politics. Everyone thought they were mad not to take the money and go and vote. Please lets not forget that the majority of so called red shirt supporters are only trying to protect their free cash handouts. If someone new comes along in a paisley shirt and offer them more money they will all be wearing paisley.

makes me wonder;why Redbull drink owner is one of the richest man inThailand

Maybe T is the owner of redBshit, pun intendet

  18. Your post is spot on GARY! The yellow shirt bullies like JD would have you believe that the red shirts coming to protest in Bangkok represent a national securtity risk, while they play down the takeover over the governemnt buildings and the siege of the airport by the yellow shirts as a binine act :) If it wasn't so sad it would be funny! The government, military and police stood by while the yellow shirt hooligans layed siege to nthe airport and ransacked the government buildings, and now you see just the opposite reaction by the governemnt, when red shirt thais from the countryside try and come to Bangkok to have a peaceful protest the governemnt orders a massive military presence and roadblocks trying to prevent the protesters from entering the city :D It would seem that the present government has much fear of the voice of the people from the countryside :D

Thaksin apologists are starting to whine now, probably because they know that so far this weekend has been a damp squib. Hilarious though that they do not include Thaksin as a member of the elite or the rich. Came to Bangkok to have a peaceful protest? I thought one of their leaders wanted to turn Bangkok into a sea of flame. Just like the reds tried last Songkran when they hijacked an oil tanker and attacked locals with baseball bats.

Yes next is 'Storming the 11th Infantry Barracks' what brilliant strategy!

Seems Abhisit camping out securly there will distract the Reds from going after

actually functioning government buildings, so work goes on anyway.

    The bottom line is;

Thaksin has no support from any real authority figures in ALL of Thailand,

and so he is left to spend his money and TRY to cause trouble,

but they won't allow it to get out of hand.

he USED to be in that general authority group,

but he SCREWED UP BIG TIME... and continues to.

And his puppet party is isolated and can only try street action because as a viable opposition party

they are neutered. As long as the legitimate greivences of some of the red followers are harnessed to

the revenge and face recovery fantasies of Thaksin, they can NOT get justice no matter how legitimate

some of their wants may be..

Time to rethink their methods of getting things done.

Thaksin apologists or red Shirt rebranding PT weenies have a Sisyphusian mountain to climb in this one,

and they have not the moral and legitimate fortitude to keep pushing indefinitely.

As this is a International Forum, let me say this: "make Taksin Staatsfeind numero uno" put a bounty on his head and you will see if 5 million baht would sway even his best and fiercest supporter.

I read in the Bangkok Pest (typo) that 2 motorcycles have been showing support of the red bloodhounds on their travel to Bangkok.

Stop them from travelling back home and put the worst in jail.

The motorcycles in fact were Choppers and Carabue fans, seems all misfits are supporter of the DEVIL in RED,why the Leader never himself wears a red shirt etc, because he is a coward par excellence, hiding behind the misleaded poor and desolates.

The elites and aristocrates are not the real probelm in Thailand.

Take all the hures and bargirls away from their liars and you see how many tourists will flock to Thaialnd.

See one church/temple etc and palast and you see them all.

As to the Taksins wealth, how many banks/SET etc have aided and abetted Him to shift his ill gotten wealth abroad??

Sure he left for Hongkong with 20 siutcases full of USD not monopoly thai baht, how many traveel to Mae sai and burma to moneylaunder thei money in the casino owned by Chavalit, same goes in Cambodia, thats why they opened the border so swiftly to go about th norman business and NOBADY check's you going out with any amount of money.

  19. This is like his 3rd 'last chance' already. It's like a final Eagles tour. With the estimated 400 Billion ++ Thaksin has hidden abroad, there is enough funding for many many more demonstrations and thuggery.

I am not sorry to make THIS statement,

HOW many Taksins are out there, how much money, cash or otherwise is abroad which belngs to the Thai gevernment and populace??

I must say,Switzerland,Liechtenstein,Andorra,BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS,Samoa Bahamas are Tax heavens(whoever coined that phrase is maybe a crook himself),those countrys should be punished for the aiding and abetting of Thiefery any hidden loot of the Taksins ilk.

  20. I admire everyone's imagination and clairvoyance of future events. :)

Meanwhile, political protests can and do happen in any part of the world without the need for martial law and rumors of coups. For example, today in Italy.

do you call Thailand and the red roosters civilized, packing rotten fish and shit in bags to be thrown to other poeples faces, how about e-coli bacteria, how about dignity, the red menace is about as civilized as a monkey in the zoo, fence bangkok in, all the reds are there and dont let them aout again.
