  1. Hi,

Now this topic has been covered several times but I might have a couple new questions !!

I work in France on a 2 month rotation and spend the rest of my time in LOS.

What is the best option for smart phones with regard to airtime packages/roaming etc ??

I'm not interested in debating the best phones, this will be the 1st time I have had anything other than a basic Nokia, but more interested in your thoughts/experiences on the best way to stay connected.

I'm in U.K at the moment and will check the viability of a contract here later today but pretty sure roaming charges will be too excessive. Other option is to get a pay as u go SIM in France for when I'm working and another for LOS ?? Or......

Please help with any suggestions ?? All I want to do is stay in touch with my wife while I'm away and be able to contact the rest of the world when I'm at home smile.png

    Many thanks in advance....

P.S no complicated computer jargon, you are dealing with a not so 'smart' guy

  2. There is a large stationary/art supply place near Ko Rang hill..

Not sure what it is called but if coming from Central Festival, past the football stadium, left at the lights and up the hill (Mae Luen rd), before the lights at the top there is a small soi on the left. It is in there on the right. Cheaper than B2S..

  3. What would you do, just for fun, with 10k and a '05 Honda Wave 125S...

Thinking about tidying mine up a little bit and maybe getting a Hp or 2 extra out of it ??

    Suggestions smile.gif

Also, what is the best oil to use and what tyres are the safest on this kind of bike ??

    Thanks wai.gif

  4. Thanks for that..

Think we are gonna continue south to Mai Saireng and miss out the 1263 :)

    Happy days :)

Parts of it are very rough with lots of potholes. We were in the truck when I ran into a couple BMWs and a KTM from Singapore on that road a few days ago and later on top of Doi Inthanon. They made it fine but complained about the condition. The last 20k up to the Inthanon road are very steep so it would be 1st gear on a Phantom. If you took it slow I guess you could find your way through the potholes. It is pretty and very remote so if you don’t mind the bad roads you could give it a try. Personally I would not do it on a Phantom but that doesn’t mean it is not doable.

I have a few pictures of the trip on my blog but no shots of the bad road. There are a couple of bike shots.

  5. We would be happy with 4 hrs riding a day. Not sure how many KM that would be up there as I guess it depends on road and traffic conditions !!

Not looking to party.. Just me and the wife wanting some scenic spots and nice food.

Thanks for the GT Rider suggestion, having a dig around now :)

    Cheers

How many kilometers a day do you enjoy traveling?

Looking to party in Pai or find a quiet mountain town?

Dig around on Ride Asia and GT Rider forums trip reports to find out what you seek.

  6. I love these forums...

Not only fun to read but pretty useful too :)

So, all you bikers of the north, please could you give us some experienced suggestions.

Would like to do a 2 day 2 night bike trip, visiting Pai and Mae Hong Son plus anywhere in between..

Do you have any route suggestions and accommodation recommendations ??

Will be starting the trip on 15th Dec.. Want to be back in CNX on the Saturday to avoid the traffic out on the roads...

    Many thanks,

  7. Thanks for that indepth reply... Much appreciated, along with the other suggestions.

We are going to try this one for a couple nights and have found a few serviced apartments that are 500 baht a night too, so will try couple of them as well..

Will report here on them all so other people can benefit jap.gif

I have stayed 2 or 3 times at the Baan Nam Sai Guest House. The place is very clean with hot shower and free wi-fi. The 3 lady staff are friendly and speak pretty good English. The room is about 300 sq feet with a large cupboard and dressing table. It has a big fridge and even a small storage room where you can hang dry your clothes or use it as storage room for your luggage. A/C is good and cable TV though I had never watched it.

The surrounding is good with no undesirables like drunks and prostitutes or sexpats taking them into their rooms. The front gate closes at 8 pm (you can slide open) and you need a door key to get into the U-shape building. It's a short walking distance to 7-11, the Irish Pub, and an area with many bars (no bargirls) where many young and old Caucasians hang out for a few drinks and dance.

I personally prefer this place to 3 or 4 star hotel when I go there alone. It's B500 per night. An Australian gentleman I met that stays 2 or 3 times a year on a monthly basis. He told me it's B10,000 a month. He loves the place.

    Here's the address and number:

Don't think they have a website. You can book through Agoda (that's how I ended up when my daughter booked for me the first time) but the price is the same. When you call let it ring longer since the 3 ladies there are most likely cleaning up the place upstairs.

Oh, you will be in a location within walking distance to all kinds of eatery and shops. I think this place is also good for the other lady in another thread with 2 small children. I had wanted to post in there the other day but I was tied up then.

  8. So many to chose from !!!!!

Can anyone with personal experience recommend a nice guest house in the 600 baht a night range.

Location is not so important as we will have transport, but good local food close by would be a bonus..

Also, how is the weather at the moment ?? We will be arriving on 14th so would like to know what to pack..

    Thanks Chiang Maians jap.gif

  9. Hi,

Please could I have some experienced advise on what bike to hire for a road trip up North.

I usually ride a Honda Wave around the race track that is Phuket and have only ever ridden up to 250cc trail bikes in U.K, not to say that I wouldn't be comfortable on something larger just giving you my riding history :)

We will be flying up from Phuket to CNX on 14th Dec and staying for a week. Looking to travel out of CNX for at least 3-4 days as far as Pai and Chiang Rai. Where to hire a safe bike and which model would be good for 2 people, max 4-5 hrs riding a day but probably 2-3 hrs.

All suggestions gratefully accepted and digested..

    Many thanks in advance

  10. prob me, i hit a farang's bike on the bypass few months ago when he wasnt in the shoulder and i was trying to pass someone by the left lane because he was going 40 in the right lane as they always do

Tanuki. Drive faster or further left and if you see an obstacle then stop and wait for cars to pass you if you're a slow driver. If you'Re trying to do a uturn on the right side of the road, wait untill you are next to the uturn lane before switching from the shoulder to the middle lanes instead of pissing off everyone driving at 30kph in the fast lane.

If you follow those simple rules, you wont ever be too close to a moving car.

Did you deliberately hit the motorcycle because he wasn't riding to your standards and he pissed you off, or because of your poor driving skills? I hope you stopped and explained your rules to him as he was on your road..

    Well said AussieBrian...

Since when and in which country should motorbikes drive in the shoulder ??

That doesn't give us much room to dodge dangerous drivers plus more chance to get a puncture from all the rubbish !!

I think the fact that we pay road tax entitles us to drive on the 'road'...

Just in case, I carry a 2ft metal bar which is a good deterrent for pushy drivers :)

So Mr Thailand, share the roads and play nice, otherwise you might get bumped yourself..

  11. I'm not trying to blag a WP but if I help her with the coffee shop, I think I would need a work permit ?? A friend of mine was arrested in Phuket for clearing a few tables in his place, obviously they were watching to catch him out :)

Yup, tutoring without a permit would be illegal but how could I get a work permit to tutor without setting up a company ??

So my real question was, can I set up a company and get WP that covers managing a coffee shop plus tutoring !!

  12. Hi,

Not sure if this will get moved straight to the section where only SunBelt can reply ??

My wife and I are starting a small coffee shop / restaurant but I would also like to do some private tutoring at home.

We do not live in one of the major towns and don't suffer from the normal harassment from authorities.

    Should I..

    1) open 2 companies

    2) open 1 company for the tutoring and let her run the coffee shop under the table

    3) not bother about any company and see how we go

    Thanks

  13. I am trying to get internet installed at our house..

We live just outside Surat Thani, past the turning for Donsak on the way to Nakon Si Thammarat.

3BB only have lines installed as far as the school, about 400 yards from our place but they have no intention of going further !!!

TOT don't have anything to offer apart from Satellite installation which is expensive and a slow connection speed.

Being a computer phobe I need some help.. Are there any other options, any way to find out about other service providers coverage in the area ??

    Help....Help...Help

    :)

  14. Hi,

I have some friends coming out to visit and they will be spending 2 days in Bangkok before flying to Phuket.

My knowledge of the capital is lacking as I seem to spend all my time in MFA or U.K embassy, perils off getting married I suppose :)

All you BKK residents, what are the best 5 things to do/see while they are in the city ???

Now I know you can come up with a few off the beaten track ideas + plus a couple main stream wouldn't go amiss...

Many thanks on behalf of 2 misfits,

    Carlos

  15. Does anyone know how much I should pay per day to hire a mini bus ?

I need maybe 2 for a trip across to Khanom.

Any contact for save, reliable rentals would be appreciated.

    PM me any contacts.

    Thanks
