  1. Does anyone know of a Thai language school in or very close to Surat Thani.

I do have the option of a private tutor but would rather be involved in a class situation, better for me to learn and more sociable.

    Any recommendations much appreciated.

  2. Subject related but not quite on topic...

What is a good water proofing for these red bricks ?

We are using the small red 2 inch bricks, just for a couple of feature walls. Very small but next to sinks so will need to be waterproofed..

Anyone know whatroduct works best ??

  3. Here we go..

I recently posted a topic about idiots high jacking subjects and starting a pissing contest, looks like it's happen again :)

Fellas, it was a straight forward question that doesn't really need to be fought over who knows best..

But you guys crack on, I'm off to lay some more turf...

  4. Is it illegal to ride a bike that has no plate, even if all import and excise taxes have been paid ?

I have searched and read all previous posts about excise tax etc but can't find a definite answer, or a reliable process to obtaining a valid green book.. Maybe I haven't found the right posts :)

The bike I'm looking at was allegedly imported whole as opposed to built from imported parts, if this makes any difference ?

    Thanks

  5. The toilet block is already built, so we will start around that and all other slopes, leaving the area behind where the main building will be until completion.

I will also try to re level so the water runs into my pond which has supporting/retaining walls with drainage.

Shame it wasn't levelled this way originally :)

Thanks for all the input though.. I will definitely get photos up on completion of the whole project..

  6. Sorry that you can't see the pics, well sorry that I can't upload them :)

We are going to try getting some turf down, along the top of the slopes and down them.

As I said, the slopes are only 1.5m high and I don't see any risk of the whole lot going as it is on flat land.

We will try putting some bricks along the edge as well, saw this is someone else's post that planted grass in between the bricks..

Pretty sure once the building is in place (not closer than 2m to the edge) plus some plants and other stuff to slow the water down the problem should be solved :)

Just hope we can get the turf rooted before any heavy rains come !

  7. I need some advice from anyone who has not only a solution but also a solution that looks good.

We filled and levelled this land over 7 months ago and are now looking to build.

Our problem is during heavy rain we get water run off that starts mini avalanches down the slopes, which soon turn into land slides.. The slope height is only 1.5m so was thinking to terrace it rather than build any sort of retaining wall ? This is land for a restaurant so don't want anything too unsightly :)

Any advice would be appreciated, plus the usual p**s taking will be fine from the regulars...

Right, trying to attach a photo.. Can't attach !!!

    Anyway, the normal style

And levelling that you always see on plots next to the main roads :)

  8. Hi,

Quick question about best type of paint to use on toilet doors...

We have built a new toilet block for our coffee shop and will fit those cheap plastic type doors, ideal for wet areas but don't come in ideal colors.. So I would like to know what type of paint will work best on them ?

    Thanks..

  10. 90 posts innit smile.png

Maybe people will start taking me seriously now..

BTW I met my wife in a bar but she was just visiting friends that worked there, I believe her....

Is the buffalo any better these days or still a bit under the weather?

Buffalo is doing well... All the money Aunty made from flogging us Amway <deleted> has helped out a lot..

  11. I have not been a member on here for as long as some but have read quite a few posts and it seems like there are lots of sad and lonely folk that have nothing better to do than create arguments out of nothing..

Even when an OP is just asking a simple question eg where can I buy a hammock, 10 replies later and we will have a pissing contest between 2 schmucks about something totally off topic and normally involving "how long have you lived here A hole"

The funny thing is, I keep reading just to see who backs out 1st..

Wonder which reply to this will spark the 1st battle... Come on, let's set a record :)

  12. I love most things about LOS..

Like most people, there are certain things that frustrate me but overall I'm happy to live here..

However, why can't they ban Amway ??

Or just ban relatives of the wife from being involved with it... We had over an hours sales pitch for a water filter that we already told them we did not want or need !! 30,000 baht for something to treat our rain water which we drink :)

Anyone else have trouble kicking annoying relatives out the house ? My dog loves it though as I tend to take him on longer walks when this happens..

  13. Ok, so most of the main stream shops offer the same selection of power tools. Probably not the same quality as we might expect in Europe or the US but out of the choices available, ie Hitatchi, Bosch, Makita etc which would you buy if you needed to...

I'm just buying a few that I need for a project, if they last me a couple years and I get a couple more small projects out of them I will be happy :) But would be interested in your opinions and experiences...

  14. First of all ... sad that this incident has taken 6 lives.

BUT, how can the police confirm that the driver was asleep?

With everyone involved in the accident unable to supply evidence how can they reach this conclusion?

    Drunk ... maybe

    Drugs ... maybe

    Asleep ... maybe

A post mortem will determine the first two ... but to confirm 100% that the driver was asleep ... maybe it's ben lost in the translation.

If the driver was awake, there would probably be brake marks of some kind on the road or wherever before it hit the tree.

Having fallen asleep myself behind the wheel here in Thailand, i know there weren't any brake marks before i hit the electric pole.

Sorry with AB (Antilock Brakes) there are no brakes markes because the wheels do not lock up.

Correct. It is called ABS, though. Most modern cars have this today.

Nobody among us knows exactly what happened. So why are some people so judge-mental towards Thai people? They are Buddhist and as such, many of them are living by the what-will-be-will-be principle. There is a meaning with everything. In life - and in death. Its not the end to them. So why should their behavior ever suddenly change? It has nothing to do with corruption.

Another thing is that - in general - young people - whether it be in my country, in Thailand - well, probably anywhere in the World - believe they are immortal and as such, they are "allowed" to drive as if the rules of speed (and speed sometimes combined with drinking) don't apply to them. We loose many young people in my country, in England, US, everywhere.. on that account every week! Despite our good driving moral! And despite our good driving courses! So why should we judge Thai people for this reason when it is the same SHIT home in our own backyard?!?!

This is sad, regardless. Calling their death a bonus is low, it's stupid and it is cold.

I don't think in the U.K there are quite as many deaths on the roads as here in Thailand. There was that major pile up on the M5 last year and it was national news. This sort of thing occurs in thailand quite frequently and gets a mention in the local papers once, then it's forgotten !!! It's not the same here....

  15. The sale is on...

It's a bit slow and you end up back in the waiting room after 10 mins.

Just bagged 2 return flights BKK to Perth for 21K, I'm happy with that :)

Mind you I didn't have any intention of going, just a sucker for a bargain...

What is there to do in Perth ??? Or should I start another thread clap2.gif
