Schawb has International accounts and US accounts.  Different animals...different rules....different minimum account opening requirements...etc.

Trying to open a US Schwab account online may require you to have a U.S. IP address (easy enough with a VPN) otherwise the account opening page will be redirected to Schwab's nearest office for new applications based on your IP address.

But if trying to open a US Schwab account you will need to have a US address for the application.  Schwab does do hard pull credit agency report on each new application.

I'm not sure how it would work online but there is a matter of verifying one's signature.

I always copy every page in passport. Save them randomly asking you go out and copy various pages.  Even then they ask for copies of pages they already have in hand. Just cant find.

Just a few days ago I came close to  finally getting an answer to a question  that I've asked of many.     Where does Thailand officialdom store the mountains of copies it produces on a daily basis.  My talk was with a bank manager who likely had an idea about it but my question fell victim to distraction.

In the coming week I have to renew my one-year permit to stay on retirement (non-imm O) basis. Anyone been there in the past few days and can say what the current requirements are at Phuket Immigration? (Experience tells me they have a habit of adding or subtracting elements without announcing it. At one time, I recall, they wanted a doctor's cert stating you were not bonkers, alcoholic or riddled with syphilis)

    Last year it was:

    • Passport + signed copy of every page,
    • Proof of B800k baht in Thai bank,
    • Bank book,
    • Photo of self outside home,
    • Map of where home is,
    • Cert of address (already in passport).

Anything else? Would very much appreciate any response that saves me having to go back more than once.

You didn't mention Elephantitus which was asked on health form I was given.

Copy of EVERY page?    I'd hope not.    With the extra pages mine's a book with between 40 - 50 pages.

Bank book?    here copies for sure and update the passbook.

Be sure to make a deposit or withdrawal to show recent  activity.

Why did Thai immigration hold a meeting for embassy representatives in the first place? What's the reason?

Why did they ask the British embassy to verify more thoroughly the income that is covered by the embassy letters?

    Joe,

Do you have any idea why, if all this is true,  the Thai immigration only involved the BE in this affair?

Why didn't they involve all embassies that offer a similar income verification letter?

I'm not too sure but I heard Singapore is $700K in their bank to be an expat.

I really like Singapore but the housing costs are off putting for me.    Transportation costs are easy to get around.

Your post caused me to look up what it takes to retire there.

"Each scheme has its own requirements, and you’ll either have to work or invest in Singapore to qualify. For the former, you have to be employed and actively working in the city-state before you apply, and before you turn 50 years old. Otherwise, foreigners are required to invest at least $2.5 million Singapore dollars (about $1.8 million at current rates) in the local economy by opening a new business or by expanding an existing business.?

And one has to wonder why they insist that foreigners who want to live here, have an income that is two to four times that of the Thai lower class, which is the vast majority of the population. This administration is particularly surly towards ex-pats. Well done Little P. You are chasing good men away.

I'd say the person who posted this  is easily one of the reasons Thailand wants to insure foreigners are self supporting.   Mooching or sucking off the Thai medical system is pretty low class  in my book.

"Gov. hospitals are CHEAP....chest x ray ,Ekg , Meds, 28 blood tests, See student DOC cost ...1500B..........another time hospital stay 13 days Lung infection  13,000B.....Not 200,000--300,000B.....I Live on 15000B, have new CBF 500 honda, condo, new swiming pool, get Drunk, 35 yr olds all night for 500B and Bank the rest.........Life is Wonderful...."

Before you know it he'll want to further his education by enrolling in a Thai school.    (actually that might be a good idea for him.)    ????

This storage place was the best option I found in Pattaya.      The owner is a  Kansas Jayhawk fan and is  very engaging.

I only find storing things a dead end option.      I've done it twice and ended up regretting  not simply giving all my things away rather than paying to store them.

    Words to the wise.

Find out how long the landlord will take to refund you the deposit. Some like to take their time about it, hoping you can't stay long enough to collect it.

Some members of this forum claim they're landlords.     I'll bet they'd state  they're completely above board in promptly refunding  due deposits.

Putting it into storage. Sounds costly what kind of stuff don't you need to take that you need to keep?

Selling if off not a  option?

I realize you mean giving your things to your wife's relatives to keep until you possibly return to Thailand.   (Maybe you get back later and maybe not.)

Thailand has a dearth of storage options as you know them in the USA.      Besides,  paying to store things is incredibly dear  even under the best of circumstances.

Most people might make these sort these comment when they turn 50 y/o They say "I don't care if I'm dead when I'm 70 y/o bla, bla, bla.". They nearly all change their minds when they reach 69 y/o.  If you lack that quality to strive to achieve self preservation. That's called insanity.  That is one of the most common terms used by investigators when people take their own lives.  I'm 76, life is a bit slower now but it's also great.  I'm getting ready for my telegram from the Queen or maybe the King of England.  Only 24 years to go.  My mum used to say "Aim for the stars and be thankful if you hit the treetops"

Your Mom was a reasonably  aware lady.  Good for you..

So you are going to give limited mobility a miss!!

What a crazy comment, maybe you will like me have no choice regarding that.

If you are going to give limited mobility a miss, stay inside your home, never ever dare to go on the roads here, as doing so you could very easily lose your mobility, due to no fault of yours, but others.

It nearly borders on delusional or insanity.

It's called an Extension of Stay.   When an extension of stay is approved immigration puts a stamp in your passport like below which uses the "Extension of Stay Permitted Up To" wording.  They put that date on the ............. line.

    image.png.7ce28ba798ccd3e1f7e1e140137609e2.png

And without pulling out my old/expired passport which showed when I entered Thailand around 10 years ago on my Retirement O-A Visa maybe the stamp they used at the airport used Permission to Remain wording.

But current stamp wording used is Extension of Stay Permitted Up To.....

I was just quoting and joking about the difference in wording on the verification letter and what many on this forum are quick to jump on.     ????

Who specifically "urged" that for Americans? Is an urge like a law or regulation? What weight does an urge have? I've got an urge to eat some ice cream...off to Swensen's I go.

I believe later today I may have an "urge" to use a toilet.

I’m going to the US Consulate next week to get my Income Affidavit.  Of course the US never certifies anything(it is just an Affirmation Under Oath). I will ask if the US Consulate has plans to terminate this sevice?  In my case the 800K deposit is a no-go and direct depositing my pension into any Foreign Banks is also a no-go.  Maybe my time in LOS is coming to end soon?

Some people may be forced to simply pull up stakes and have a fire sale.

Not missed. They weren't all that cheap at the end 80 baht all small beers when you could get a pint in air con English pubs with real toilets for 100 baht up till 7 or 8pm

Would you be more happy back in the air con English pubs?

    I thought so..

Thing is i've always paid 8 baht a unit where i've stayed (1 bed studio/hotel rooms)

But usually my electric is about 1000-1200 a month for 12-14 hours use, including very old AC units

Now i'm paying nearly 2000 for 6-8 hours use. The brand is TCL which i've never seen before and looks nearly new, also has a very noisy built-in fan which is constant and there is no option to turn this off.

Call an aircon service company to help you.

They won't charge more than 500 THB.
