  1. You should try Opus Wine Bar but its not in Bangkapi. It's between Sathorn and Silom in a Soi called Pan Road. Great wine selection and the place is just lovely

I live around there not much there .... There is Tong kla which have mediterranean food that are a bit adapted to thai food. They have nice beer and some internationnal food like pasta. It s worth a try if you never been there. Now the indication how to go there :D ... It s near the intersection between sri nakarin and the road to muu baan nakeela:

This link should help better than anything :)

  2. Just want some thoughts from TV laptop users. I want to buy a laptop for around 40,000 Baht and was looking at either a Sony Vaio or a Macbook. Which do you think is the better buy (or even other brands)???

    Thanks in advance...

Never buy a Mac. They are costly and not worth the price.. apart from just a clean design.

With windows... it is convenient, cheap and free in most cases.

you should NOT be locked with the same vendor for both hardware and the OS.

You arent locked to an OS if you buy a mac. You can still install linux or windows on the mac. By the way most ppl i know dont find windows convenient :/

  3. Or you can go to www.OpenOffice.org

and get the completely equivalent open source software download

for free, with regular free online automatic updates

    to replace MicroSoft Office Suite

A long time ago I switched to Thunderbird email from Outlook,

    Firefox web browser from Explorer

also free downloads...do a search and download at your leisure

    Going beyond that,

I just installed Ubuntu operating system,

replacing a perfectly good XP Windows Pro Media

so that I never have to worry about the ever present virus menace.

And I never have to worry about Norton, MacAfee, etc to keep MicroSoft safe.

Anyone ever wonder why MicroSoft needs outside products to be secure?

That also is completely free open source

There is a free lunch in this world after all.

There is now a very real alternative to the entire MicroSoft world.

and how do I run Adobe software I need for business with Ubuntu...?

You use Wine for example for photoshop CS2 -> http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?...on&iId=2631

  4. Can anybody explain to me what a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is?

Does a VPN allow you to access websites which are otherwise inaccessible?

Can I run multiple Operating Systems in a VPN?

Is my PC accessible to other persons when I run my programs in a VPN?

A vpn is a Virtual private network : Quoting wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN)

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network in which some of the links between nodes are carried by open connections or virtual circuits in some larger networks (such as the Internet), as opposed to running across a single private network. The Link Layer protocols of the virtual network are said to be tunneled through the transport network. One common application is to secure communications through the public Internet, but a VPN does not need to have explicit security features such as authentication or content encryption. For example, VPNs can also be used to separate the traffic of different user communities over an underlying network with strong security features, or to provide access to a network via customized or private routing mechanisms.

This allows you to access remote network / computer's ressource that might not be available to you securely and reliably (depends on the link between you and the vpn server).

You can't really run multiple Operating system with a VPN but you can access multiple Operating system computer (see above). You dont run programs in a vpn, you are confusing Virtual Machine and VPN which are two different things.

  5. I have both a PC and a Mac, I would like to try out Windows 7 on the large iMac 24 inch screen , just to see what it looks like, using a separate partition on the Mac , may be with Boot Camp, I am wondering should should some thing get infected on the Windows partition , would the infection be in any way passed onto the Mac partition ..? any comments or suggestions would be most welcome , but Please no Mac Vs PC debate :)

Google first link might give you some ideas :

  6. 086 340 3049 Apple iStudio near Major Cinema, Phahon Yothin Rd. Give them a call they seem to be more helpful than some Apple shops. They find parts ect., for my old G4. they will need serial No. When they give quote write it down as quote and price can vary a little.

Their is also at Pantip Plaza on Mezanine Floor (rear to the right) a little stall (one man) that repairs Macs, and sells second hand Macs.

Thanks for the links it s a bit far from my home sadly :/ I ll try my luck at fortune.

  7. If you must....go Vaio.

The main reason is that if you need to fix it or upgrade, you might be able to do the Vaio yourself...whereas the Mac will need to be taken or sent in for service. Macs are for people who like 'design' etc...blah blah....In truth anyone who wants superior functionality and performance can get it in spades with a regular non-MAC computer. It just won't be as pretty to look at.

And just so you know - Vaio is not that great either. If you are going to drop 40k you should get a custom made barn burner that will allow you to kick a$$ every day and then easily and without headache (or too much extra money), unscrew the case and pull out the old hardware when newer drives, video/audio cards, etc... come online. But if all that is to crazy for you just buy the Vaio ... and realize that in 2 years it will be a boat anchor. Good luck

Fix a notebook yourself isnt that easy at it sound to be honest :/ Also in my experience as there is less apple model you are going to get more support on internet with pictures on how to open your macbook and how to add memory change hard disk and so on. Where as with a vaio model number, you arent going to find anything in a few months-years as there is a many many models that comes out all the time.

Personnaly i d go with the macbook pro, you might get good bargain right now as the price have dropped and model have changed the shop here need to get the stock out. The aluminium feel is really really good compare to the plastic commonly used by dell/acer/sony but this is just a personal taste.

  8. Apple EULA says you can't install MacOs on nothing else than a mac. Though you can buy MacOS Separately from any apple store. Some people are saying that the fact you can buy it separately kills the restriction apple is fixing. And there is actually a lawsuit on that matters where psystar is attacking apple. I also think that reimar was a bit too defensive on that matters closing the thread where there is another thread where people are exchanging invitation on demonoid. There is probably legal torrents on demonoid but i think the ration must be very low. I can therefore understand the moderation on the apple thread, but I dont understand why it s ok to ask for invitation to pirate movies / software or talk about a contrefeit iphone on another thread ?

  9. I bought my second i-pod recently, second hand from a friend. My first i-pod died within a year of purchase due to a bad hard drive. This new one is an 80gig classic and was sold with 11Gig of terrible music on it. After using it for a while I decided to get rid of almost all the music. Being away from home at the time I decided to try to do it with my Linux based ASUS netbook. It linked up ok and I started deleting bit by bit until I only had a few decent CDs remaining on it. I 'ejected' and disconnected only to discover that there was no longer any music showing on the i-pod but that there was now only 69Gig of space remaining. When I checked the Linux music manager it showed no music present. I again reconnected the i-pod and the music was there and available to play. This was strange but I figured that once home I would restore the i-pod using my Windows PC and i-tunes.

This has proved impossible so far. Once connected I downloaded the latest i-tunes as requested. It then told me I needed to do a restore, which I attempted. After a few minutes I got the message:

'The i-pod could not be restored: An unknown error occurred (1436).'

I checked the Apple site and followed their 5 step instructions to restore, again without success. I am now at a loss what to do other than drop into my local Apple store in Tuk.com in Pattaya. But I fear they may want to send it to Bangkok which would take time.

This is my second foray into the world of Apple and the second disappointment at the temperamental nature of their supposed superior devices. :o

Has anyone any ideas or advice? I will begin to search through the Apple web site.

    Hi,

Maybe this thread can help you :

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=310863

Good luck. If it s still under garantee i d recommend going to apple store though.

  10. Ok I've attached the output of ps as a text file as it goes over a couple of screens. Appreciate your feedback.

Looks like you have a lot of /usr/local/bin/sim process. I dont know what that is but it seems weird tohave that many ?? Could you try a vmstat 1 ? You will get something like that :

  11. I'm having problems with my virtual private server. It keeps locking up, creating havoc with my work website. Apache keeps restarting as well. Using the 'top' utility, the load average is quite high (spiking to > 4) during periods of lock up. But CPU and memory useage are very low, no processes are obviously consuming much CPU or RAM.

Support are unable to fix it or explain what the problem is. They've rebooted the VPS, recompiled Apache, and I upgraded my plan to 1 gig of SLM RAM. It hasn't helped. I tried turning off Apache and MySQL services (thereby shutting down my website) and the VPS *still* overloads. I'm stumped.

How can you have a high load average when your CPU and RAM are largely idle?

    Hi,

Just a side question where did you order a VPS ? Is it in thailand ? How expensive was it ? It seems to me that there is a configuration issue or the machine where the VPS is hosted is overloaded.

    Thanks.

  13. Reimar, i think you were rude to insult someone to be an "apple/mac freak" just because he disagrees with you.

Excuse me, since when it means to be a freak about something to be rude?

I'm a freak of something and I think it's ok to tell that I'm a freak of that! And why not?

And now I insult you because I disagree with you on that terms?

The freak word have for me a pejorative sense. When you cut the discussion with someone saying they are apple/mac freak, so there is no point to argue (justify what you are saying) it made me think even more that you werent glorifying him :o

It s weird because it s a thread about safari 4 beta released for every non beta OS that you have copy/pasted from it s orignal place :

    http://keznews.com/5389_Apple_Safari_4_bet...t_for_Windows_7

Where in it s original website, ppl says that they have tried on windows 7 and it s working and that it s normal that it s not officially available from apple for a beta OS

So I dont even know if you have tried safari yourself but if you look at your post number 17 in the thread, you start attacking apple just because the forum user made an analogy to snow leopard being in closed beta and therefor safari 4 isnt available for download for snow leopard.

I mean come on ... The title of the thread is misleading, it looks like you copy / paste this news just to bash on apple. Also you should put your source when you copy/paste a foreign news.

  14. I'm not a gamer in any way!! I use the computer for working with various software. So, there isn't any way for an challenge for me!!

Anyway, there isn't a point for any challenge! I think that I've made clear that I didn't argue about the quality of the software and the hardware either! But I argue about 2 things mainly:

Easy to take out a quality of the product and then to blame the price ... That sounds like a very fair comparison.

1.: Price compare to PC and
2.: avaibility of software which is much less for the Apple/Mac than for the PC!

List software application that are unavailable not by the application name, but by what they are supposed to do (Wordprocessor for example and not Microsoft office). Bring facts not big affirmation to support your comparison.

A 3. point is the down and upward compatibility of the Apple/Mac!

There is no application compatibility issue on mac, an application made 10.2 works on 10.5 which is a very nice work when you know that mac 10.5 supports two hardware architecture.

Try compare application installation and application uninstallation.

Reimar, i think you were rude to insult someone to be an "apple/mac freak" just because he disagrees with you.

  15. Just an advice make new photo ... From my last year experience, it doesnt work if they find out it s the same. So I wouldnt risk it if i were you, just make photo with a digital camera and print them at there. Not very ecological to print stupid picture / xeros document every year :o

Also I went there on monday at 13h45-14h and couldnt access the room , the lady at the front desk handing ticket said it was full. It seems it s full everyday since noon, so try to be there early (I m talking about the bkk office.)

    Good luck

  16. Just wondering what you constantly need to download at 80-90 k/s on a torrent. Maybe you have reached a true limit and have downloaded too much for that month.

I don't recall any part of my contract with True that stipluates how much I'm allowed to download.

    Cheers

It s true there is no such thing in the contract but you cant prove they are doing it or not ... And you cant hardly complain calling them "hi i m dlding illegally a movie from torrent and i m only getting 10k/s ...". Maybe try to do your download over night when you are sleeping and watch during day what you ve been dlding.

  17. Mac OS 10.5.2 = Vista made in Apple?

I’ve heard many different complaints about Mac OS 10.5.2 since it was released, from my own Skype/podcasting problems to issues with just about everything else, including: printing, third-party wireless routers, software freezing and problems with Time Machine.

The Apple discussion boards are littered with stories about all kinds of crawlers in 10.5.2, and while hardly an epidemic, they’re not exactly isolated incidents either.

Chuck Freedman from the PowerPage Podcast shares his problems with 10.5.2 on his MacBook Pro – he thinks it’s the buggiest software update in years. So much so, that he coined a new term for 10.5.2 – “Apple Vista.” The picture below isn’t a screen grab of the latest maze game, it’s Chuck’s MBP screen after a spectacular 10.5.2 crash.

Read more about Chuck’s tale of woe and check out six more gallery images after the jump.

Late in 2007 Apple began releasing its new operating system, Mac OS 10.5 (a.k.a. Leopard). With new hardware announcements in early January 2008 Apple began shipping this new OS with all new computers they sold, and wow, what an OS. There were tons of new features to knock your socks off. From then on, all Macs purchased came with Leopard pre-installed – life was supposed to be good.

During the early days of 10.5 Apple found a few bugs and tweeks and released an update to Leopard called 10.5.1, and again, all was well. I continued to operate my MacBook Pro running this new OS with near flawless behavior. I could go days (sometimes weeks) without rebooting my machine. I could run a dozen applications simultaneously and all was good.

In February Apple began shipping their Time Capsule backup appliance which allowed me to have a wireless network and shared network attached storage – something I’d been waiting for. Time Capsule allowed Apple’s new Time Machine software to automatically back up my data to a shared network drive and restore it easily. A great concept, but it still needs some bugs worked out (that’s a topic for another article.)

In order to get my machine to see, utilize and understand the Time Capsule, I had to upgrade my Mac to 10.5.2. Without hesitation, I did. From that day forward I’ve been running the worst operating system I’ve run on a Mac in years. My machine now runs slower and if I run more than a few applications at a time, it barely operates. It takes nearly six minutes to wake from sleep, and when it does finally wake, the mouse bounces around uncontrollably and requires a hard shut down to fix.

Again, time on my side, Apple released a keyboard firmware update to fix some issues. I applied the update, but didn’t see any fixes. Shortly thereafter Apple released EFI firmware update 1.5 - well things can’t be any worse (so I thought), so I applied it. Boy was I wrong. See the screen shots. Only days later Apple released EFI Firmware 1.5.1 which fixed more, but at this point my machine was dead. I’ve sent it in to Apple repair to get it fixed, and I’m waiting for its return.

If I wanted to run on a buggy crappy operating system, I’d pickup a PC running Microsoft Vista. I don’t expect this from my Mac. Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger) ran great whereas Apple Vista just appears to be immature and needed more time to cook.

Also, I know that Apple wants to push sales of Leopard but I don’t like being forced to upgrade because of some new piece of hardware is released. Rather than force 10.5.2 down my throat because I spent more money on a Time Capsule, why not just give me a driver or application to install. The OS should be hardware independent.

In the meantime, my Apple Vista machine is in for repair, and I’m writing this on my trusty Tiger machine.

    Source

No such issue on 10.5.2 for me :/ weird ...

  18. Ouch...more than the price is the speed, though...they don't have anything over 2MB?? :D

Thai have but I don't know the price now. May you call to Khun Chomponut 0865996008, she is Head of Calling Center and responsible for SME as well and ask her. You can mention my name and she'll try to help you.

    Cheers.

I think you should have put that in PM ... Personnaly i wouldnt like you post my name + phone number of my office direct line in a forum where lot of ppl are usually complaining about my work (TRUE) :o

  19. Is it just me or TOT started sucking again for a about a week now?

I live in Pattaya and was getting steady 500-1000kbps in the afternoon and evening but now it's down to 20-40...

I called TOT and they haven't given me the usual bullshit of brocken cables or fixing servers, they basically say that everything is fine...Is it just me or is this problem widespread?

Enjoy 2 months of vacation ... thai kids seem to be in vacation therefore internet will be messy for this period.
