Ever notice how often your tables and computer equipment collect a layer of dust and soot at home?

We really could use fewer schoolmarms around here. Yes, I know that's a futile wish.

So why would it not be possible for the virus to be on those raw meats, and why wouldn't it stay active for at least the same time as on a hard surface?

Finally! The "I only get my virus from hard surfaces" brigade has appeared to shame us all.  Personally, I like mine cooked. ????

Many members would have lost their favorite bar and/or restaurant, or a bar or restaurant they frequented often.

You wish, as finally after 63 pages somebody would collapse the floor in a fetal position and just cry little eyes out. But as nobody had any fave bar or restaurant, you changed the definition to "frequented often." We had only one poster who frequented places nearby, but there are several, so seems he won't be hurt either.

    Sorry.

Apologies  if my post sounded like a wind up,it was genuine, just trying to get a fix on true prices,
though i accept right now nothing is normal.

You'll need to go there or send someone to ask around to get a halfway intelligent answer. Here you'll just get the usual hot air from our Glutters, Doomsters, and ace Economists, renters all, whenever the word "condo" pushes their button.

  4. Oh, maybe you got there just after the new mask policy. Or maybe the Thai man opened up a little bag showing a million baht for deposit. Enough with the usual victimism.

Fact is, nowadays in Thailand you need at least to carry a mask with you to wear as required. Effective, not effective, doesn't matter. Fortunately posters here don't need masks to protect themselves against all the hot air generated about the masks. For that we got the ignore button or the option of just reading the first post in the thread.

I went to stock up yesterday (Mar 26) on a few items at Makro around 8pm.  There was no panic.  Plenty of meat and eggs available but instant noodles were gone.
Orange juice price was 25% higher than before.
No more or fewer people than normal.
One thing I found interesting is that all the non-food/soap items had been roped off and a sign saying the government told them they can't sell that stuff.  Stuff like freezers, blenders, pots and pans, etc.

Day before yesterday, afternoon, no panic as well. But I'd say more people than usual were shopping at that time, maybe 30% more. Everything available but eggs. I found that surprising but not after finding them also out at a couple other stores.

    Agreed.

I would suggest that some of the more hysterical thaivisa citizens be given a two week quarrantine.

The hysteria, paranoia and sheer misery of some of the more prolific posters is as insidious as the virus itself.

Right. Permanent quarantine. But not gonna happen as bashing Thais and trolling Thailand create so many page views among the lower orders. Even the news writers are in on the game and mistranslate or slant things accordingly.

Will be less after thing get more back to normal. So many old farts are now really stuck to their keyboards ranting and calling out all the "fools." Also, fewer gov't announcements then to stir 'em up, so the focus will return to bashing TAT.

But we'll always have a lot cr@p to wade through.

My saw the poor fools waiting under the tent in the parking lot at the "Pattaya Immigrations" which is not in Pattaya.  I use an agent who handles EVERYTHING and have use her for 3 years....Non-O , 90 reporting everything.   I don't want to sound cruel but if you can't afford to use a good agent, maybe you should go home.

I don't want to sound cruel but if you can't figure out where Pattaya is, you're probably too stupid not to use an agent or else go home.

thts all folks, bags are packed, last stick of furniture sold this morning and i'm never comin back

im taking myself to a secluded island in the pacific, got rid of the phone and somone is coming to pickup my laptop this evening.

i'm goiin off the grid, cast away style.

minimal contact with people until the day i die,. the world is done, civilization will grind to a halt as you knw it.

Though you've now joined the ranks of our perpetual leavers who talk big but won't leave, your goal is still to go off the grid, cast away [sic] style. What's to stop you from going ahead and just doing that now? Esp. since your last stick of furniture was sold, you got rid of the phone, and the laptop was picked up already? What with everything closed, it's somewhat like being on a secluded island with nothing to do. Maybe get yourself a volleyball to talk to. "Wilson" might make a great conversationalist.

    Besides,

  9. Mine closed, too. Shame--I hope the staff members are being given vacation pay or something.

Time to beef up the home gym if you haven't. Suspension trainer, resistance bands, pull up bar, maybe a couple of dumbbells. Some sort of cardio machine would be nice if you have the space & budget. All available from Lazada or Aliexpress. (China! Let's knee jerk.) Aliexpress has the big sale starting on the 27th.

    Seriously deluded!

It's been a pleasant couple weeks without the daily TAT: TVF drivel. It's back in full-throated glory. Lots more old farts stuck at their keyboards now I guess. ????

Well, how do you think Thailand and the Thai Baht are going to do over the next year or so, with a decimated tourist industry and far lower factory orders?

Wouldn't matter, as the 800K is on deposit. Or if spent, spent in Thailand, and Thai prices might well fall so that some great bargains might be had. But come down to it, you have absolutely no idea what's going to happen to prices or the baht. If you could predict currency movements, you'd be far too rich to be bothering to post here as a keyboard warrior.

And where do you think they might turn to generate much needed revenue without annoying the citizens too much?

Loosen the foreign quota in condo buildings as they did in the financial crisis of 1997?

Sorry, I know you want to stir up paranoia and, inevitably, get to the seizure of farang property and bank accounts. Good luck with that nonsense. The Just In Case fallacy is one of the standard tools.

Today I’m feeling very grateful to Thai Immigration (knock on wood) for making me withdraw $28K from the stock market and deposit in Bangkok Bank savings for the Retirement Extension. I would only have $18k otherwise as investments down 37%. Now don’t mess that up Thailand! I might have to buy a round for the IOs. I take back most of the nasty thoughts I’ve had.

Be nice if we had a lot more such gratitude expressed from the huge brigade whinging about how, if only, they'd be making so much more in what must be share portfolios, as if that was guaranteed. ???? I don't think we'll be hearing too much of that for a while.

You would only have lost money if you had chosen now, during what is clearly a catastrophic low, to sell your shares. This is not going to be the first time in history that the markets don't recover.

Sorry, TVF Economics doesn't allow that logic to apply to condo owning. And we must be consistent.

Now I think markets in general do recover given enough time. However, most of our posters just buy-and-hold, whereas they should already have been selling during the past few years as the market advanced. So there could be a wait, maybe longer than some of our old retirees have, before prices recover. But I leave it our experts to make predictions.

  13. Gluing soles of shoes back on is SOP in Thailand. Expect it; know where your shoe repair stalls are located.

You can of course buy shoe glue and DIY. Lazada has various brands:

    https://www.lazada.co.th/catalog/?q=shoe+glue&_keyori=ss&from=input&spm=a2o4m.home.search.go.1125719cMWUQdn

That will work for a while, but a shoe repairman will do a much better and more lasting job.

I had a pair of expensive Merrel mountain boots that seemed fine and both soles came off suddenly on my first day in Bangkok.

And? So did I, and still do. Same thing happened, though it took a bit longer. Shop glued 'em back on and sewed. Been good ever since, useful armor against Thai streets & sidewalks.

    Great.

    It is called Lookie Looz.

They are not "buyers" until they buy it.

Good luck and please let us know if that happens.

Sigh. Another condo owner uneducated in TVF Economics 101. There is no looking before buying here as in other countries. There's only looking before looking.

Now in theory there could be buying before looking as our mongers are wont to do late at night, but no condo buying or buying in shopping malls has ever been observed by our ace Economists, renters all. The highly reliable lights on night metric has confirmed that only a few condos have ever been purchased over the last 25 years, and those from some farangs desperate to sell and heading for the exit. The rest are just sitting there vacant and unsold in crumbling buildings.

Conclusion: the potential "buyers" merely stopped in to enjoy the free aircon.

You do realise, don't you, that the name Swampy really comes from Cobra Swamp, the translation of the original name of the airport's location?

You do realize, don't you, that I'm talking not about the original name of the airport's location but about the name of the airport? Its current name, and in only in relation to KhaoYai's stated policy (BS, actually) of strictly using Thai names for Thai places, even as he demands his wife use English pronunciation for the Thai name of a Thai company. (Can't make this stuff up.) Now KhaoYai can't even pronounce "Koh Chang," let alone "Suvarnabhumi." So in fact he calls it either "Swampy" (Brit English for ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ, however derived) or "airport," maybe "big airport" in a pinch. ????

Well said , it seems likely ( with some input from Yinn) that allegedly this headline is slightly misleading.

Maybe we should set up a ‘reality check’ thread on headlines.

I have a suspicion that would not go down too well.

if allegedly this headline has been changed so much - it’s disgraceful.

Reality check thread would be great, love that. Pinned right at the top of the news forum. No, that ain't gonna happen!

Disgraceful . . . and in my view immoral, stoking paranoia and racial hatred in farangs reading the forum. Not atypical.
