1. I had a Ford Ranger 4 x 2 in 2002. It had a powerful 2.5L engine which was quite noisy due to the very low gearing. But gear change was quite good. The heat generated by U.J coupling just behind the gear shift ensured that you could never get cold. I imagine the sample you experienced had a hard life and was not representative of the model, perhaps having been used by an impatient and sporting Thai driver.

Driving 4 x 4 models in 4WD I have heard should be limited to speeds not exeeding 80 Kp/h at distances of not more than 100KM. You should use 4WD frequently to prevent the facility siezing up. Best 4x4 vehicle for those who use it for non goods work is definitely the Toyota Vigo Hi-Lux 3.0L D4D which is quite, outstandingly comfortable and can cruise all day at 120 Kp/h. Very good on fuel too.

  2. Unlike English Law where there is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty, in France, the accused is presumed Guilty until proven innocent.

This is a shocking situation where the Parents of Thai Children are prepared to expose them to such perversion for sake of money. No degree of poverty can justify this and those who setup these crimes should be subject to the full force of the law.

  3. I do hope you avoid allowing the text of your query to fall into British Official hands as this in part, constitutes a criminal offence. You must not attempt to bring into the UK any person for the purpose of getting them a UK Passport. Before marrying you must make application in Thailand to the British Embassy for a Marriage Visa. Furthermore, unless the intended Spouse house an academic record and good spoken English and this will be proven in an interview, its likely that such an application will be denied in the first instance. There is a much better chance of success for a repeat application when made 12 Months later where proof of a long term relationship will be a factor.

Thereafter there are more processes to go through and it often takes about 3 years before a Passport can be issued. As much as anything, the delays are to protect unenlightend UK Citizens from themselves.

  4. I visited 3BB's website http://www.3bb.co.th to pay my monthly fee by debit card. Microsoft Security immediately warned that the website was unsafe but thinking it must be a mistake I proceded. Within seconds of reaching the site Kaspersky Anti Virus detected three instances of "Trojan Program Exploit js.pdfka.cqi".

The 3BB Helpline is closed until the Morning but I advise members to contact 3BB to establish what they are doing to counter this breach of security

  5.
I usually go with Acer with me being based in Thailand and I know they probably aren't the best build wise, however, they have served me reasonably well. I am looking for a new notebook and fancy changing to a Lenovo. I have seen a couple of the guys at work with the 'Think pads' and they look really solid. I need a notebook for work (offshore environment) which may get knocked around a little bit. I don't play games but I watch the odd movie. For the main part I will be using it for my work using the basic office programs, adobe professional and surfing the net. I am not sure about the prices as I haven't really been out to have good look around yet. I am a Lenovo novice but I have heard some good reports about them so thought they may be worth a try.

Any advice appreciated.

Just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad SL510 in the UK where they are a bargain price. It's beautifully built to a very high standand and the LED screen is the best I've ever seen. The only thing to consider is the after sales service and I don't know how good it will be in Thailand. Acer, while not of the same quality unless you pay real money for a Timeline X has the advantage of a good service network plus all the third party repairers seem to known them well. There also the Acer Advantage Warranty for up to three years available for about 3000 baht extra if that's still the price.

The Toshiba Satellites are also very good value for money with lots of options and very smart too.
6. Anyone seen Solid State Hard discs on sale in Bangkok yet, prices?

I didn't notice any on Hardware Houses sales site?

Prices starting low 400USD for 160GB drives in US?

I would not advise waiting for them to pop on the shelves. If you go into a proper Intel Dealer though, he should be able to obtain one from Intel's Thailand Distributor INGRAM MICRO. If you can't find one ask Ingram for direction. If you intend to fit this into a Desktop Platform buy Intel's "Speed Demon" SSD with the fixing kit icluding 2.5" to 3.5" rails.

Have a look at this link :-

    IntelĀ® Solid State Drives, Features

You can also ask Intel direct:-

  7. now that the dollar has taken a beating throughout the globe, have the hotels repriced there rates accordingly???

same as all the tourist things to see and do e.g. restaurants, bars, hire cars etc etc

my thoughts are if they dont ajust to the dollar drop, less and less tourists again

    ANY THOUGHTS??

Th Hotel Industry is not effected by exchange rates fluctuations in the same way as commodities. An imported laptop computer's price will logically decrease as the Baht's strength increases simply because a lower denomination of Baht will be required to effectively buy the foreign currency.

However in the case of a Thai Hotel (unless it's owners fix their rates against foreign currency) the rate charged at the door will usually be demand driven because Thailand is largely self sufficient in food, materials and labour. The Thai Baht is one of the World's most resilient currencies when viewed against political stability. Perhaps this is in some part a reflection of Thailand's chaotic past. Politics and Economic peformance enjoy little correlation.

  8. The word "indefinite" should not be taken too literally. The UK Goverment as a public policy are mindful of those who go for UK settlement and then leave for long periods of time. When my Wife returns to UK after a few weeks away she is usually asked by the Immigration Officer as to say how long the away period has been.

This implies that your Wife may need to make a fresh application. Members of this forum may not be qualified to provide a definitive answer and you should seek direction from the UK Embassy or Visa Legal Specialist.

  9. Billion - A very troublesome entry level Router which ISPs supply because it's cheap. When you look at the Billion range you will see other models costing up to 8000 Baht. There's got to be a reason hasn't there?

Use a well tried Netgear or Linksys model. Up Market ones have circuitry to make the best of the line speed. If you buy a model which has removable antennas you can also increase the wireless range. Most Routers or Wireless Access Points come with quite weak 3 dbi gain antennas. For about 1000 Baht you can upgrade to a 7 DBI antenna which will really drive well through walls and way down the Garden.

Good luck with TOT - they are deplorable and nowhere as good 3bb who have really improved in recent Months.

  10. Absolutely - I take it you mean a Wireless Internet gateway which is a Modem/Router/Ethernet 4 Port Switch/NATS Firewall and Wireless Access Point. Some Users have models which leave out the Modem have a seperate modem.

All you need to do is enter the Router's setup program by first connecting a length of ethernet cable to one of the ethernet ports at at the other end to the Computer's ehternet LAN Port. Then call up the Browser e.g Internet Explorer or Firefox. In the HTTP line of the browser type in the I.P address of the Router; it will be something like 192.168.1.1 ( If that's not the one then just call up a Command Prompt from within Windows and manually type the following ipconfig /all you will see the correct IP address in the list). This should bring up the Router Setup Screen. Type in the Router's Login and password (you will find this in the Router's manual and sometime on the underside of the Router). Once in, look for Wireless Settings and there you should be able to turn off the facility. Note that if you are using a laptop, turning off its wireless facility will not affect the settings of the Router.

  11. The Home Office normally stuff the application the application for Naturalisation away for 18 Months just in case the relationship changes, then take it out and if everything is the same, proceed with the application which can take another 18 Months, including taking the oath of alligence. After that an application for a UK Passport can be made and this can be done quite quickly - within weeks normally provided the application is made within the UK. The right to remain in the United Kingdom is a seperate issue and can achieved wihin a few Months, if not weeks, following the production of a Marriage Certificate. Normally the UK Home Office will need the Applicants Passport to endorse with the Right to Remain.

This cumbersome process is largely to protect those Farangs who need protection from themselves and all too often Thai ladder climbers.

Following UK Naturalisation the Briton has up to 2 years protection of his assets and within this period can ask the Home Office to return the Spouse to Her own Country.

  12. Why is this contiuing to be played out as a Hollywood Movie?

There will obviously be serious bloodshed if the Army or anyone else moves in, yet the answer to removing these People is absurdly simple and has been used many time in history.

Surround them with barbed wire to prevent escape and re-grouping then cut off all water, food and power. Within a few days and probably sooner in the heat of Bangkok the Red Shirts will be begging for unconditional surrender. Of course offer to extract the Mothers and Children.

  13. There is a well known problem with Nvidia Video chips even in the relative cool of the UK and this applies to all brands including HP, Sony etc. Specialist Engineers can even repair the chip itself. HP do a complete motherboard change.

Shame really but while Buyers seek the cheapest solutions - and these cheaper chips from a struggling Nvidia lighten the price by quite a few Dollars - they get what they pay for. If you want the longest life from a Notebook then buy a complete Intel Solution graphics and all.

  14. Absolutely terrible.

TAT demands urgent meeting with Finance Ministry.

Pattaya Hospitals inundated by a surge in heart and stroke victims.

3 Farangs leap to their deaths from a second floor balcony above one of the most frequented bars.

European Airlines report a rush of cancellations for flights to Thailand.

Shares in Boon Rawd Brewery are suspended on the Thai Stock Exchange after record one day fall.

Chang brings forward plans to introduce an alcohol free beer.

Then it was April 1st (April Fools Day)

  15. It looks like the DAAD Red Shirts targeted the Goverment on the same basis of the short lived 1992 regime of the Army backed General Suchinda Kraprayoon who was an unelected Prime Minister. There was much bloodshed and loss of life. Perhaps the Red Shirts got their military confrontation and blood tipping idea from this.

The attempted Assassination theory from the Government side is also interesting. Thaksin Shinawatra waived stories around as his popularitiy wained with accusations that a "dark person" was trying to kill him. With Thaksin, a master of spin this appeared to be less of substance and more of sympathy seeking something he continues to do whenever the occasion arises.

One can never really be sure of anything given the sheer volume of rumour.

  16. Drugs for Children in Schools, Sugar Shortages, the Meking Drying up and half the Country suffering water shortages, Global Warming and all They worry about is this self serving criminal politician and his angy thugs.

No small wonder Thailand remains in the fast lane.

The Media here could do a lot more to help if it focussed less on personalities and more on serious issues.

  17. ADSL Internet runs on your existing telephone line. The Telephone Company does not need to call. At the Exchange they just partition your line, part for voice and the rest of the space, currently unused is converted to a digital channel for Internet traffic. Once this is done and tested it's up to you to buy an ADSL Modem or Wireless Router + a Splitter device to reduce line noise. Then connect the the phone and modem into the Splitter and the Spitter at the other end to the telephone wall socket. The Telephone Comany should tell you how to connect the ADSL Modem for use over the Internet.

It's largely DIY these days so if you are still uncertain buy a good computer magazine on the subject. Calling out an Engineer these days is an uneccessy expense.

  18. This is a common problem on all Desktop and Laptop Computers when the battery fails during a Windows session. This often results in corrupted, lost index or crosslinked files.

The solution is to use your Windows CD to start the system from (make sure the boot priority is set to the CD or DVD drive) and as the PC starts to boot look for a message "Boot from CD" and press any key quickly. Let the Windows setup proceed until it stops with alternative option of "Repair" or "Enter to continue". Choose "Repair". This will take you to a black screen with white text - it's the Windows Repair Consol" which will seem reminiscent to older users of the old DOS screen.

You will be asked which installation to choose. Select "1" and press enter.

    A C:> prompt will appear.

Type the command CHKDSK /P and press enter. The process can take some ime as it examines all the files on your hard drive and will involve correcting files errors as they are detected.

Once it's finished, type the command "EXIT" and press ENTER to restart the Laptop. Make sure to eject the Windows CD before it boots.

  19. Even a Boeing 707 200C can carry 35 tonnes payload but with a considerable fuel penalty. Was it really a North Korean plane?

Ukraine has a massive arms industry but the case is shrouded in mystery and in a day or so the reported story may change quite a lot. Why would an aircraft from the Ukraine fly so far South as to need to land in Bangkok when so many of Thailand's Neigbours would be in the same range limit? Only Indonesia and Malaysia would present a problem.
