  2. Deputy police chief says Sondhi case probe making progress

BANGKOK, Aug 8 (TNA) - The ongoing police investigation into the attempted killing of media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul earlier this year has made considerable progress as investigators are working actively again, said Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Thani Somboonsap on Saturday.

Gen Thani, who briefed Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on the case for more than one hour earlier in the day, told journalists that he doesn’t yet know whether more arrest warrants will be sought in the attempted murder of Mr. Sondhi, a core leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) on April 17.

The court earlier issued a warrant for Sgt-Maj Panya Srihaera a non-commissioned officer from the Army’s Special Warfare Command in Lop Buri and Pol Cpl Worawut Mungsanthi, assigned to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) for involvement in the failed killing attempt.

Both men, however, are still at large.

Cpl Worawut earlier sent a letter to Gen Thani denying any involvement in the killing attempt.

Pol Gen Thani said he was optimistic that the case could be wrapped up before he retires from his post, scheduled from this October 1 due to compulsory retirement age of 60.

He declined to say whether the annual reshuffle list of 152 police generals, proposed by National Police Chief Pol Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwan, who also retires at end of September, and approved earlier by Police Commission, would have any effect on the investigation.

The police investigation team probing the Sondhi incident earlier complained of difficulties in conducting the case as information had been leaked by unnamed police officers.

  3. Ousted premier Thaksin will set up satellite TV stations

BANGKOK, July 27 (TNA) - Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra celebrated his 60th birthday on Sunday with what he earlier branded “a big surprise," announcing that he planned to set up a satellite television business with at least three channels dedicated to the Thai people.

The announcement, via video link at about 9pm Sunday evening, was aired at a birthday dinner party at the Mangkorn Luang (Royal Dragon) Restaurant in Bangkok and two other sites holding parties to celebrate his birthday -- Wat Uthaitaram in suburban Bangkok and in At Samat district of Roi-Et.

A number of Puea Thai Party members of parliament and members of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) joined the event at the restaurant.

Dressed in a red shirt, Thaksin said he planned to establish satellite television networks with 100 channels, with at least three channels to serve the Thai people.

One channel was expected to be used to promote Thailand’s ‘One Tambom One Product’ (OTOP) output, another to broadcast ‘reality shows’ about Thai poverty and how the wealthy will help them, and the third channel will concentrate on providing education programmes for Thai students.

Thaksin's TVs to have test run in November: Noppadon

Noppadon Pattama, a legal advisor for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, said some channels of Thaksin's 100 TVs will be on air on a test run basis in November.

Noppadon said the staff of the TVs were speeding up meetings on technical issues and content of the stations.

The satellite station will use the same satellite with the People's Channel so that those who have satellite dish and receiver for People's Channel can also tune into Thaksin's TVs, Noppadon said.

  5. I only question what are "wild and unproven" claims. I don't make an "accusation" unless the claim comes first. Claims are made every hour on Thaivisa, it's only the extremely doubtful ones, such as your PhD claim being offered up for the second time, that I pause to question. Again, in an effort to maintain some modicum of credibility for the forum.

you claim that you are not a paid poster.

i find that dubious and accuse you of being in the payroll of PAD and the burden of proof is now on you.

reason is, why would someone rack up such a high post count, spend their lives hounding, harrassing and abusing a man (and his wife and children) with no apparent return on investment ?

are you trying to lobby Thai Visa members by swamping them with anti thaksin propaganda? this is against the rules.

    yep.... PhD possessor, indeed. :)

I'll leave it for now to the forum to decide as to the validity of your claims to be Dr. mc2

We can return to it later in other threads, like what happened in February, until the point is reached where you realize no one is buying it and decide to cut your losses with a feeble attempt to dismiss it as just a humorous effort on your part.

  6. Whats so dubious about Ferwet claiming he is Thai ?

you prance around this forum like you are some type of policeman.

I apologize if my hope for integrity and honesty amongst posters on the forum disturbs you.

You were fully caught out in your PhD falsehood back in February... even to the point where you freely admitted yourself that it was fabricated. However, that only occurred, if you recall, after multiple examples were provided by multiple posters that raised serious doubts about it and offered multiple reasons why it was likely a sham, such as the extremely limited number of universities offering that academic discipline.

Now in August, you wish to trot it out once again as fact? Did you think people would forget?

If you have difficulty in seeing the doubt that Ferwet is Thai, then I would encourage you to expand your experience with Thailand.

Back then I technically couldn't claim the title because my Thesis was not complete. Obviously things have changed between then and now, something which you seem to find so difficult to comprehend.

for someone who calls himself "forums number 2 top poster" you sure carry on and show a lack of maturity.

hijacking topics, making wild and unproven accusations about other members, defamation, borderline abusing the fair use laws regarding copyright (20000 cut and pastes? enoughs enough), and possibly involved in some type of lobby attempt against Thaksin.

oh, if you think Ferwet is not Thai because his english is excellent, i think that is unfair.

You didn't say that back in February. When you were caught out in your lie, you explained it away by saying it was all just a big joke and that you were only kidding, even though the context in which you claimed to having it initially were serious. Can you tell us where you obtained this PhD (or "phD" as you referred to it back then)? Can you share with us your thesis title or do we really need to dance through this charade all over again? It made you look so bad back then, I'm surprised you seem eager to repeat it.

If you consider a desire to have some basic level of honesty and integrity as "immature"... then I can see why you think Thaksin is something of a hero to you.

As an example, I look at the entire persona of Ferwert, not simply just his English proficiency, to assess whether he's being honest when he purports to be Thai.

  8. Merely stating an easily provable fact.... but that's something I realize you don't seem to care much about. :D

But by all means, please continue... because the farcical impersonations are humorous... it's become a case of "can you top this" for all these false claims from assorted fakers.

My own uncle "Pataranawat" is one of the 9 judge of the Supreme Court

    Another contestant joins the competition...

    I'll take this opportunity then.

Well that certainly validates your claim that your uncle is a Supreme Court justice. :)

Still, it's more than mc2 has shown the forum to support his own entry in the "Can You Top This" contest.

  9. It's called being honest.... :)

My moniker is factual, easily provable, and indisputable... whereas your assorted claims... are.. well, just that... unproven, disputed claims.

One can only imagine what sort of criteria puts you at # 1 at something.

well i wasnt referring to your lame title (like i said anyone can cut and paste 20000 posts), i was referring to the false and wild accusations you make about other members.

the burden of proof is on you, since you are the one making the accusation.

The "lame" title was one you chose yourself.

Posters making dubious claims can expect to have them contested.

It's up to them whether or not they decide to provide some means to validate those claims or not. A number of posters have made various claims of one sort or another that they subsequently validated and thus those claims were no longer disputed.

Your decision not to validate any of your assorted claims is duly noted.

  10. Another "quality" post from the fake Doctor... who used to call himself Member # 1.... which was yet just another of his false claims...

Stop making wild assumptions about other members that you can not back up.

Your claim to be Member # 1 was not false?

In just what manner are you Member # 1?

the criteria I have used is none of your business.

i think your just jealous because u call yourself forums number 2 poster and dont want to appear outdone.

  14. Tiger chief arrested and sent back for questioning

KUALA LUMPUR: Self-appointed chief of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Selvarasa Pathmanathan has been arrested in a South-East Asian country on Wednesday and flown back to the island nation for questioning, said Sri Lankan authorities.

However, there were conflicting reports as to which country he was arrested in, with Thailand and Malaysia saying they had no knowledge of the capture.

The rebels said in a statement that Pathmanathan, also known as KP, was arrested near a hotel here.

The pro-rebel website said Pathmanathan had gone to the hotel to meet relatives of the group’s slain political leader Balasingham Nadesan.

He left the room to answer a phone call, but did not return, it said.

When asked to comment, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he could not confirm that Pathmanathan was arrested here.

“I cannot confirm this. I don’t have the facts with me. I will find out about the matter first,” he told reporters after launching the Majlis Jalinan Rakyat at the people’s housing project at Batu Muda, Jalan Ipoh, here yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said he knew nothing about the arrest and declined to comment further.

The Associated Press reported that Pathmanathan, 54, was once the top arms negotiator and financial controller of the Tigers, headed by Velupillai Prabakaran until he was killed on May 18.

Since then, Pathmanathan has been on the run and was believed to be operating from a South-East Asian country, shuttling to several European countries under different identities while trying to revive the armed movement.

In another development, Sri Lanka’s Island newspaper quoted anonymous sources as saying that Pathmanathan had been captured in Thailand.

Thai government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn denied he had been arrested there but said there were “reports that he has been travelling in and out of Thailand.”

A Thai military intelligence official said Pathamanathan had been hiding in northern Thailand under a false identity in recent months.

  15. Court refuses to suspend Steyr payment

The Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court yesterday denied the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration an injunction to suspend the sixth payment in the fire trucks and boats purchase deal. Citing a lack of evidence against irregularities in the opening of a letter of credit in the 6.7 billion baht scheme, the court refused to order the suspension of the sixth and the remaining payments to Austria-based supplier Steyr Co.

In its closing statement the court said its refusal was based on the BMA's opening of the LC with Krung Thai Bank which was required to strictly follow laws governing international trade. Krung Thai Bank, which issued the LC to Steyr, was obliged to follow conditions specified in the LC and make the payments when the conditions were met.

The court said the suspension of payments could hurt the bank's credibility and the BMA should reconsider its decision.

  18. Police nab 40 Taiwanese

PHUKET : Police have arrested 40 Taiwanese for using internet-based telephone services to allegedly swindle people in a series of raids across the island. The Central Investigation Bureau mounted separate raids yesterday on six houses in three districts, CIB deputy chief Panya Mamen said.

He said the suspects detained were 30 Taiwanese men and 10 women who alleged set up a fake call centre to con people out of their money. Over 1 billion baht is thought to have been pocketed by the gang, police said.

Police seized 46 Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and 24 VoIP Gateway systems, 30 mobile phones, and five laptops during the raid. Police Major-General Panya said the gang would phone its victims using the VoIP system. The alleged fraudsters claimed they had been assigned to collect debts owed to banks and credit card companies. Then, unwitting victims were allegedly tricked into transferring the money into bank accounts opened by the gang.

  19. FIRETRUCK SCANDAL

No payment suspension as injunction refused

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration yesterday failed to secure an injunction for its plan to suspend further payments to the Austrian supplier at the centre of a fire-truck scandal.

The Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court said the BMA had not presented adequate evidence to warrant an injunction.

"There is no solid proof that there is something wrong with the issuance of the letter of credit [L/C]," the court said. "As of now, there is also no final ruling to convict the supplier [the beneficiary in the L/C] of corrupt practice."

The court added that a suspension of the L/C, if granted, could seriously damage the issuing bank and its clients.

Had the court issued the injunction, the L/C issued by Krung Thai Bank at the request of the BMA would have been suspended.

Under the L/C for the Bt6.68-billion deal, the BMA has already paid Bt4 billion to Austria's Steyr Daimler Puch, the maker of |the fire trucks in the controversial deal.

The BMA must also pay four more instalments to the company, with the next Bt780 million due on Monday.

The BMA has been seeking a way to annul the purchase contract after the National Anti-Corruption Commission's (NACC) suggestion that it is mired in corruption.

Under the deal, the fire trucks are being sold to the authority at a highly inflated rate, it said.

After hearing the court's decision yesterday, Nikom Boonpitak of the BMA Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Division said he would consult BMA executives about the next move.

"We will decide later whether to appeal the court's decision," he said.

The Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court is scheduled to start looking into the BMA request that Steyr Daimler Puch should return Bt3.9 billion plus interest of 7.5 per cent a year on February 22 next year.

  20. Thai PM: Tamil Tiger leader held, but not in Thailand

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's prime minister said on Friday he had information the new head of the Tamil Tigers, the separatist group defeated by the Sri Lankan military after a 25-year war, had been arrested -- but not in Thailand.

A Sri Lankan military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, said late on Thursday that Selvarajah Pathmanathan, wanted on two Interpol warrants, had been arrested in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

"I can confirm that this person was not arrested in Thailand. According to information, he was arrested in another country," Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told Reuters.

A Thai government spokesman could give no further details on where the arrest had taken place.

Pathmanathan took the reins of the remnants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after their military defeat in May.
