  1. About "I Don't Give A Hoot' book I was just pointing out that Trink did not write it. If he ever writes his own book maybe it will have a different slant on things.

Bernard Trink's problem was that after he was fired from the Post he started a Night Owl web site. This was in the days before web sites made money from adverts so it was a pay for view site. I remember it was so complicated to sign on to that I give up

After a couple of years out of the limelight all the newbies did not know who he was.

  2. "Seems like so much of the humor and charm from those days has dwindled away."

The baton has been passed to the internet. Sure, Crutch stil writes his weekly column, but is in semi retirement now. Trink does the occasional book review, but he's very old and doddery. Very few young writers care for newspapers these days as they know the print media's days are numbered. There's far more exposure on the net, especially to one's peers. And boy, is there a lot of amazing stuff out there. The humour and charm you are missing. It's just moved on from the old era (which I miss, too).

I expect to see Trink tomorrow night. I'll be sure to mention it to him that you think he is "very old and doddery".

Not sure if you are joking or what, but if no joke, tell him his book (I don't give a hoot...) was the first Thailand related book I read, and enjoyed it very much.

Not at home now to confirm, but Trinks book "But I Dont Give A Hoot " was written by a Jennifer ???????

According to the preface in the book Trink only give grudging consent. It also states why he has not written a book on his life himself

  3. Mike---get ahead of the crowd---go look at Ban Chang

Ban Chang---Village of Elephants, condos for that price on the water (no not across the road on the water) 30-40- minutes from Pattaya 90 minutes from BKK. Don't look at some of the over priced real estate adds---go there and look....lovely village ...walk along the empty beaches, eat with the locals there at night----you would think you were 1,000 KLms from BKK.

PM me if you want I know the area well---can tell you where to look, --your be over 1 mill but under 2mill for 2 rooms.

    Thai language police alert

Ban Chang does not mean Village of Elephants.

Leave you to find out what it really means

  4. Regarding Thailand are you an expat? Thailand offshore is 99% Thai manned

    Have you any oilfield experience?

Have you any relevent oilfield qualifications?

Looking for toolpusher, oim, chief mechanic, chief electric position?

Sorry but anyone who has to look on a forum for advice on how to secure an oilfield job has not a chance, unless there best mate is a rig manager.

  5. in Bangkok I bought a "condo" for my son. 600,000 baht, 10 minutes On Nut BTS. Building is full all the time. Renters pay around 3000 month.

Its not what farangs would class as a condo more like a hotel room.

If it is doable in Bangkok it must be doable in Pattaya

    Okay....

    But sorry let me calculate...

    12x 3000 = 36000 in a year

    then divide 36000 :600,000 =0,06

0,06 x 100 = 6 % your returns however still need deduct maintenance fees repairs paint jobs...install internet and maybe you unit will be only occupied 11 months a year..

so i guess if you would rent it out for 3000 BHT a month you would be making 4-5 % annual returns ...

Yes that possible also in Pattaya but that not what i looking for...

    As a investor i should get arround 9 % and net 8 %...

It is 1000 baht a month more than a fixed deposit in the bank.

9% return is 4500 baht a month rent.

You say Minpins room will be empty 1 month of the year

Yours will be empty 12 months a year

    Who is making money now?

  6. 300-500k condos (thai-style) and the rent out for 2000-3000bath a month yes it will work..

Where in Pattaya can buy units in the 300-500 price range? is it even freehold ?

Mostly I been looking at units in the 1-2 million BHT price range with monthly rental to expect 11000-14000 BHT.

However i doubt if they will be rented out the whole year ...Serious doubt it and if for example you cant rent out 3-4 months a year then it becomes a bad investment

Imagine, a clever property developer like you needs to ask advice from a forum.

  7. I am having a similar problem to the OP

I am using google street view in bangkok to read the name of a shop on Silom. The problem is there is a bus stopped right outside the shop blocking the view.

The strangest thing is that yesterday and today it is in the same position.

    Will try again tomorrow

  8. Same sort of thing happened at Lakewood on Bangna Trat Road many years ago when taken over by another Thaksin crony. Transfer fees were also bumped up to B200,000 which made the memberships worthless as a marketable asset - just a liability to pay membership fees. A group of lawyers led a protest against it and achieved some small concessions but not much. Except for Krungthep Kreetha members don't own the land and that makes membership unavailable to foreigners anyway. You just own a temporary right to use the club on certain terms and conditions that can be changed or cancelled without notice.

Talked to a couple of Thai friends and they say this course is in very poor condition now. This is backed up with a thaigolf web site course reviews.

Typical second owner who think they can make money. When they can't they reduce the maintenance.

  9. A couple of years ago, there was a full page article in one of the English language newspapers about a Thai gentleman who is making and selling all the Italian supercar kits here in Thailand. The prices were in my view very reasonable. What surprised me was he was doing a couple of cars a month at that time.

What put me off enquiring was the last sentence in the article. "All buyers are responsible for tax due,and registering the car"

  10. I presently use Colmans powdered mustard in tins, powder form. Mixing a batch at a time. I have noticed it goes off after a couple of days, in a sealed jar kept in the refrigerator. Unlike the shop bought jars which last months. Can anyone give me a preservitive that I can add to the mix.

  11. Beer! I'm guessing I'm NOT their target customer as I thought the beer Very expensive! NO large bottles,

NO local draught beer and a SMALL beer was 60/70 baht.

Are you seriously sniffing at 60 baht for a beer in a pub?!!! :)

It's not a case of sniffing, but questioning the statistics.

A small local beer in TRL that costs 25% of minimum daily wage in a regional city in a third world country - Yes, let's sniff a little!

that's about £1.10 sterling, a pint of local beer in the UK (London - Wetherspoons) one of the world's more expensive cities

is as low as £1.45, around 80 baht, about 3.5% of the UK daily minimum wage.

    David

I have just returned from the UK yesterday

Drank 1 draft pint Stella in a Weatherspoons 2.58 pounds, 5% alcohol content

Cheapest draft lager on offer was 1.99 pounds, 3.2% alcohol content.
