After a venture in futility last night trying to contact the IRS I gave up. I just now after being transferred 4 times and a 1 hour wait on hold got to talk to a real person. The person was a young man who was polite and helpful. After the secret handshake he was able to access the details. He confirmed that the system leaves a lot to be desired as the system is BROKEN DICK. He said he was putting a trace on the check and then a new (debit card) would be mailed to me at my address in Thailand. This process could take another 6 weeks. The phone number he said to call the IRS on for the stimulus check is +12679411000 He told me not to use the 1800 number. He also gave me his ID number. The IRS has to mail this debit card to my Thai address and can not mail it to a US address. There is a chance that the IRS may transfer the funds over to SSA as they have my banking detail for DD this is to start July 24. That being said next year on the 2020 forums they will be a place to put your banking details for DD.

Sorry to hear of all your troubles. When I call on Monday, is there any particular number or numbers I should press to get a live person? Curious, did he confirm the first stimulus payment sent was a check or was it a debit card? Thanks again for your help and time.

Late last week I sent an email to the Manila SSA FBU Office in which I said/asked that I've seen a few social medial posts that the SSA has suspended/is not mailing SSA Form 7162's for 2020 due to the pandemic but I can’t find anything official on any SSA website such as the Manila SSA FBU site.

In response to that email below is the quote of the Manila SSA Office response I got today/2 July.  Note, it simply says the 7162's have not been mailed yet....does not say this year's mailings/completion has been suspended.

Above response is basically the SSA's standard response/policy regarding non-receipt of 7161/7162 which is they (SSA) wants a person to wait until after the first and second 7161/7162 mailings done in May/Jun and Sep/Oct of each year.  They don't want that process bypassed/shortcutted--they really want you to receive and complete the bar-coded mailing sent from Wilkes Barre.

However, if you do not receive your 7161/7162 from one of those mailings then contact SSA on or after 1 Nov.  They will then email you a 7161/7162 form for completion and return via scan/email or snail mail to the Manila FBU....Manila may also recommend that you also snail mail a copy to Wilkes Barre....but the copy going to Manila will keep your benefit flowing. The 7162 that they will email you was identified earlier in the thread and I've attached it again.

Quote of Manila SSA FBU webpage as of 2 July 2020 regarding 7161/7162 completion

    https://ph.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/social-security/feq/

And here's the SSA Form 7162 again that the Manila SSA FBU will send a person for completion if they didn't get a 7162 from the 1st or 2nd annual mailings.   Or at least it's the form version they sent my wife last year when her 7162 never found our Bangkok mailbox (but my 7162 did)...and it's the same form version the Manila SSA Office provided the VFW District 5 person in May 2020 when he asked the Manila FBU about the 2020 mailing.

Thanks for the update. Do you have a pdf for the 7161 form as I have a child and my computer will not allow me to access the SSA website. Thanks for your help and time!

Very few if any. I am still waiting. 54 days. I well wait tell the evening of July 6 our time then give them a call at +12679411000.

It looks as if just you and I did not receive our checks. We must have shared the same bag/container that was put on the stagecoach across the Pacific Ocean.

Have to wait until July 3 which is 9 weeks before they will put a trace and then it takes 6 weeks to trace before they send another check. After that, have to hope it does not get lost again. They will not change to a bank account. Terrible!

I just got mine last week. For some bizarre reason it was first sent to Taiwan by mistake. The international mail system is a mess everywhere. The usual system of relying on commercial flights is completely broken down so give it some time.

Thanks for the encouragement. Curious, what was the date on your check? Thanks

Mine was to be mailed on May 1st and still waiting while many others have reported already getting theirs.

My check I was told by the IRS was mailed May 1. 44 days and the only two things I have received is JACK & S-H-Y-T.????

I am in the exact same boat. Not happy. Hate to have to go thru the time and aggravation of trying to get a replacement.

It seems that mail arriving is all over the place, so I will wait 1 more week and then no choice but to begin the process.

    Hope you get yours.

I got my check in the mail today! ????

I no longer have a US bank account.

I file taxes every year using my address in Bangkok and filing both a 1040 and a 2555 (no taxes owed or refunded).

I have not filed my taxes for 2019 yet, as there is no mail service to the US at this time, so the most recent filing was for 2018.

The check was sent to my Bangkok address and it is a real check, not a debit card.

What was the date that your checked was supposed to be sent? April 24th or May 1st

    Thanks

Just saw this topic again in the sidebar.  I received my check on May 15, then 3-4 days later the Trump letter.  Around the beginning of May I had checked the Social security website and it stated my check was mailed April 24.  So took about 3 weeks.  Will have to wait to deposit after Thai post opens up to international mail I guess.  Bank will not accept until then, was told.  Last U.S. check I deposited here took about 6 weeks to clear... funds to be available.  Wish I knew how to get the Bank of America Check scanning app on my phone without a U.S. phone number, but seems impossible.

What was the date on your Trump letter? Thanks

Still no new info on the get my payment site. Same "Payment Status Not Available" message.

Still the same false info on the IRS site. As far as I know nobody has gotten one unless they filed a tax return or used the non filer site.

    image.png.91adf5db686cfa232a353e636e14714d.png

Still the same advice on the non filers site that a person in my case should not use it. I am worried it would throw a wrench in the works if I tried it now.

    It still states this.

    image.png.425159559c6097341f4a14fead11a85e.png

I am sure I would have problems since I am married to a Thai and would not be submitting info for her.

Has anybody gotten a payment recently?

As I stated in an earlier post, I got the Trump letter but not my payment.

For what it's worth, I filed a 2018 return even though I did not have to. I also get ss.

I did fill out the non filers form to give my bank details since I was not able to get into the get my payment site because of address issues and to make sure they had my dependents.

  9. UPDATE!!

First let me say that I live in Thailand, I receive social security, but I DID file a 2018 tax return to Austin, TX.

Secondly let me say that the get my payment tool said that a check was scheduled to be mailed to me on May 1st.

TODAY, I received the Donald Trump letter DATED May 1st that confirmed I was to be sent my payment by check/DEBIT CARD

The Trump letter was supposed to be mailed 14 days AFTER payment was sent to you.

So now I am totally confused. Did the payment go out the middle of April and I did not get?

Did the payment go out on May 1st, but this letter beat out my payment?

Did they make a late switch to send out my payment by debit card? If so, those cards just started to be mailed out on May 15th.

No way to figure out the IRS and what they do. I have no choice but to wait a few more weeks and see what happens before I try to call them and get this straightened out.

Sheryl - My check was mailed on 1-May and I have not received it yet.  I am waiting for June 1 then will call the numbers denoted in the forum.

Has there been a single report of someone whose check was mailed to Thailand receiving it?

Mine was supposedly mailed on 1 May.

The exact same for me and nothing yet. I will post when I get the check.

  11. The new stimulus proposal also has a clause that states a person must have lived in the US for 6 months from January 1st to June 30th to be eligible and did not leave the US for over 30 days. Have no clue how they would check or know that.

Sorry, I don't have the article that was in. So, I am assuming that if you have a Thai address, you're out of luck.

However, I'm sure the Senate will have their own ideas and regulations if it ever comes to pass.

Like SilverBlue, the GetMyPayment portal finally worked for me today.  The IRS stated that they sent a check out May 1st.  I am not sure to where.  I think this was activated by a tax return and not my social security.  Maybe I will get it this month.

Exactly the same for me just now. Good luck and hope we get it soon.

By the way, did the portal give you the amount of your check? Mine did not.

  13. Well, the portal finally accepted my Thai address.

I entered only the following as a sample all in caps  16/38 MOO 4

They said a CHECK was scheduled to be mailed to me on May 1st.

I sure as hell hope it does not take forever or get lost. I also hope they sent my full amount. I don't know why they didn't give the amount as I read that a lot of people had the amount given in their status.

I will let you know when I receive the check.

Just the house number and Soi number that are the beginning of my address. For example 123/456 Soi 12/5. Left off the village name and etc.

    Thanks Ubonjoe for your reply.

Sorry, just one more question, did you use dashes when you put in your social security number like 111-11-1111 or just entered the numbers straight 111111111.

Thanks again for your help and time!

I have seen nothing that says they will start the first week of this month. I am not sure they have done anything to send them yet.

Tuesday would be the first day this month they could be received here and then it will be Thursday after that due to the banks being closed for holidays.

Still no info about mine on the "Get My Payment" site.

Did your Thai address work to access the get my payment site or are you using your US address?

Also, many people in the US that get SS have reported they have received their direct deposit starting Wednesday both to their US bank and the Direct Express card. Many replies on several YouTube channels that give out daily info.

Having checked on several expat forums, the tool will not work with a foreign address, period.  The only shot seems to be calling the IRS once their call centers are functioning again.  The IRS systems run on state of the art 1970s technology, so the chances of this useless Get my Payment tool getting upgraded and working for all are slim to none.

Up until they did the maintenance on their site, my Thai address worked fine for a couple of weeks.

Now, it does not work and I tried entering many different ways.

If anyone receives their stimulus check by mail here in Thailand, please let us know.

As somebody asked earlier, has anybody still been receiving mail from the US lately?

  17. 1 hour ago, ubonjoe said:

    Nothing yet.

Been thinking about how they will handle those that don't file returns and are using International Direct Deposits (IDD) for their SSA payments. Same for VA payments. I wonder how they will be done.

I suspect they are still are sorting out how they are going to handle those that did not file returns.

Yeah I am also waiting in the same situation (SS, no tax file, BKK bank DD). I think Wed the 29th (plus maybe 1 day for BBK to process) would start the "worry clock" I think.

The IRS has always said that you would receive your stimulus payment the same way you get your SS payments each month.

Didn't anybody access the get my payment portal to see if or when the payment would be sent and how it was sent?

Many people have said the portal now shows SS and SSI payments are being made on April 29 and 30 as well as May 1 by direct deposit or mailed checks.

Putting in the same information formatted the same way as before, it's now for the first time telling me the information inputted doesn't match their records. Try three times and you're locked out for 24 hours.

    Not user friendly, IRS.

That is exactly what has happened to me.

I always had access to get my payment entering my Thai address, but since they did maintenance, I can't access my account.

Very, very frustrating!! 3 days in a row now.

If you are receiving monthly SS payments via Bangkok Bank, and have not received the stimulus, have no dependents, didn't file taxes for the last two years ...

Is there any point in trying to use the IRS "Get My Payment" non-filers facility to try and get an update on payment status ?

I assume that is probably as pointless as trying to contact the Manila SS office.

    thanks, ~o:37;

Social Security recipients have not been processed yet.

They will begin to be processed starting Thursday and you will soon be able to get your info from the website.

Did your Thai address work?  I have entered mine like you said, and its still saying my information does not match.

Yes it did and still does. As I said earlier, I entered my address exactly as it appeared in a letter I received from the IRS last year as what you put on your return is not necessarily what the IRS has because of space restrictions.

Once again, no commas, no tambon or amphur and no city. Just your street address only and Thai zip code.

    Hope this helps.
