  1. i believe a similar topic made the rounds here a couple of years ago but i can't find it using any site searches. anyway, it is a tiny whitish outer shell similar to a pistachio that houses a very small worm like creature. very slow moving, if at all. find them on my bathroom wall sometimes, other times i see them hanging from the porch roof and birds like to eat them.

    anyone know what this is? one of the few times that google is of no help.

  2. Foods That Were Not Served at the First Thanksgiving

    * Turkey - Turkey was often eaten by both the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims but is not specifically mentioned in Winslows’ letter. The account mentions “wild fowl” only and could have referred to duck or geese instead of wild turkey.

    * Popcorn - There was no popcorn, corn was prevalent but was not popped.

    * Cranberry Sauce - Fifty years after 1621 there is mention of a cranberry sauce for use with meat in English recipes. Prior to this time sugar, a necessary ingredient in cranberry sauce was an incredibly expensive import. Both the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag would add whole cranberries as an ingredient to add tartness, however cranberry sauce itself would not appear until the 1670’s.

    * Potatoes - White potatoes were virtually unknown in England at the time of the Thanksgiving feast, they were only raised by specialized botanists at the time and were not a part of the English diet. Sweet potatoes were, in the early 1600’s, imported into England from Spain and were used only by the ultra wealthy for their purported aphrodisiac properties.

    * Pumpkin Pie - There were no readily available ingredients for the crust of a pumpkin pie at the time. Pumpkin and squash were included in the feast but served as vegetables only. After 1621, pumpkin dessert recipes included pumpkin pieces sliced similar to apples only.

    * Apples - Apples were not present in 1621 in Plymouth.

    Foods Included in the Original Thanksgiving Feast

    In addition to the wild fowl, pumpkin and squash mentioned above, the following foods were certainly abundant and most likely were included in the “harvest” celebration:

    * Fish

    * Lobsters

    * Eel

    * Mussels

    * Oysters

    * Corn

    * Parsnips

    * Collards

    * Turnips

    * Spinach

    * Onions

    * Dried Beans

    * Dried Blueberries

    * Grapes

    * Nuts

    1621 Thanksgiving Meal Details

    * The celebration lasted for three days, not one, and consisted of intermittent feasting and entertainment (games and shooting of muskets).

    * It was most likely held in October, not November.

    * There is no evidence that the Indians (Wampanoag) were explicitly invited.

    * It was not called “Thanksgiving”. It was a “harvest festival”.

    * It did not become an annual event.

    “by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.” - Edward Winslow – December, 11, 1621

  3. i bought a used iphone 2g from the states and unlocked it here myself. no 3g in thailand for the foreseeable future but the iphone 2g has everything necessary to stay up to date and communicate. mine is unlocked so i use my current DTAC sim card which had all of my previous numbers, i also use the DTAC data plan which costs about 200 baht per month. i would have chosen unlimited however i have wifi at work so i really don't have any use for unlimited data plans.

  4. anyone here know anyone? power went out at the house yesterday and apparently a power surge tripped the fuse inside my wii. did some googling and found that the wii has a pretty sensitive fuse inside to prevent damage. the official recommended steps are to unplug everything attached to the wii, wait 2-10 minutes for the fuse to reset and then, voila, power returns.

    unfortunately i did everything and didn't get the voila, power returns part. this would also be a good time to get it modded for asian games since it's an american box.

    anybody?

  5. tesco has always had at least 3 different types on display, immediately behind the diaper aisle. range in price from about 1,000 to 3,000 baht. the best one they have is quite nice for 3,000 baht, it has an adjustable height, built in to rock back and forth and has a mosquito net cover.

    maybe those aren't what you are looking for but they always have three on display, or have had for the last several years.

  6. this was for a "normal" non imm b and certainly not for teaching.

    i was in communication with the agent by phone and email prior to leaving for penang and he was quite clear that all i needed was the intro letter, company docs and rules and regs and he would take care of the rest in the absence of the WP3. the company would have provided the WP3 for me had they enough time, however they were of the impression that it wasn't required for their purposes and I had to show them several instances where it was required to convince them otherwise, by that time my visa run was imminent and I wasn't about to pay 2,000 baht or thereabouts for a simple two week VOA. actually my other option of attempting to obtain it without the WP3 by using kota baru (which has numerous reports of leniency in these matters) was less appealing than a 2,000 baht two week VOA so I called up my agent in penang and we got it done with no hassle, and no WP3.

  7. The way I understand this post is that people with a 1 month extension of their turist visa from immigration in Thailand, can't get a new 60 days turist visa in Penang on top of that.

    I am not surprised. Penang is bad news for people with turist visas.

    yes well we've known for a long time that penang is bad news for tourist visa types, what is somewhat nice and new and refreshing however is the granting of a non imm b without first applying for the work permit, and granting a non imm o based only on the income verification letter.

    perhaps the trip was fortuitously timed to coincide with the consular officers' return from a night at the dan nok entertainment complex near the sadao border, only time will tell...

  8. veteran of too many trips to penang, used same "rasta" agent as always and was able to get my non imm B without having applied for the WP3. the guy that rode down with me was able to get his non imm O based only on an income verification letter from embassy, no bank book.

    so that's the good news, bad news for any remaining repetitive tourist visa people in penang though as the same agent is telling one and all in advance, do not come to penang if you received a 1 month extension in samui.

  9. i only found this thread by googling "isp upload compression"

    i am on samui and pay tot for a 4mb down speed and have been getting results from 28-200kb/s. yes, that is kb/s.

    i have been using dslreports for speed tests to various servers over the last week and just received this "WARNING:isp upload compression" today.

    haven't been able to find any conclusive results or information regarding this warning message. plenty of others around the world are getting the same thing recently.

  10. having lived worked and operated all types of vehicles around samui and its "roads", i have never in any of my years seen as many car bike and pedestrian accidents as i have on the ring road through mae nam. i distinctly remember once seeing 3 completely separate accidents as i made my way from bophut to bang por. partly due to the massive amounts of traffic i'm sure, but also due to an always growing number of pot holes, lack of lighting etc.

    i don't know if there is an official "ghost road", i've always thought of it as soi bond kai, from bang rak 7-11 to the 7-11 on the lake road. hate driving any type of vehicle down that road, way too narrow and way too busy.

  11. i've had a non imm b in the past, as well as a work permit however each ended after leaving my last employer. currently on the last month of a 3 month tourist visa, i have accepted a new position with a new employer and need to make another visa run. this would be easy enough as i have all of the necessary paperwork in hand, however, the 3 month non imm b i received in the past was only a single entry.

    is it possible to get a multiple entry 3 month non imm b? is kota baru better for this than penang? what about singapore?

    reason i need a multiple entry 3 month is that while i am already employed full time, i will be working for my employer very briefly in singapore just two weeks after my current tourist visa expires. this means that if i go to malaysia right now and get a single entry non imm b, i'm screwed the moment i come back from singapore.

    the other option seems to be to just do a border bounce and come back with a two week tourist visa and then apply for my non imm b in singapore?

    any thoughts or suggestions?
