Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that some accountants of Effective Planners were arrested at the TPI offices? They were sent for due-diligence at the TPI offices while their WP's stated the address of their own office.
Now that you mention it, that vaguely rings a bell. No doubt the powers-that-be at TPI didn't want anybody looking at the books too closely. Quick call to immigrations, problem solved!
Same modus operandi in this case as well - me thinks.

One don't even necessarily win in this situation with a work permit. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a work permit specify the place where one can conduct work?
Example: I want to open OvenMan GemTraders with its office somewhere in Bangkok. I go through all the rigamarole of registering the company, paid-in capital, x number of Thai employees, blah, blah, blah. I apply for, and am granted, a work permit for myself. The work permit specifies my place of business as being my office in Bangkok. I attend some new gem show in Nakhon Nowhere, conduct some trade and am unfortunately busted in an immigrations sweep for working at a location other than that which is specified on my work permit.
Think this is a ludicrous made-up scenario? Think again. This actually happened a few years back to some foreign journalists who were attending a press conference (I believe). They weren't working at the place of business stated on their work permits (newspaper/magazine office). I believe this was settled quietly and in a friendly manner but it's a good example of the government using a difficult-to-follow, probably out-of-date, law to show everybody who is boss.
The point I am trying to make is that I feel the anachronistic laws remain as such for two reasons: 1) the powers-that-be simply cannot be bothered to update them to reflect the current business environment (i.e. good ol' governmental inertia); 2) the powers-that-be like the laws just as they are. The laws as written are handy for the inevitable crackdown that will be ordered from time to time.

"Those who are badly impoverished, they will be given free houses...
Will that include English teachers?
No, they can use the vacated slums.

Meanwhile the Royal Thai Navy plans to increase its patrols around oil and gas wells in the Gulf of Thailand.
And today's Bangkok Post reports that the Royal Thai Navy shall charge PTT around Baht 30 million to protect their oil rigs from terrorists. Whats next - my local police station charging 1,000 Baht per month to protect my house against burglars?

Thaksin promises end to slums in three years
THE Old Grey Donkey, Eeyore, stood by himself in a thistly corner of the forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and he thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, "Why?" and sometimes he thought, "Wherefore?" and sometimes he thought, "Inasmuch as which?"--and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about.
With apologies to Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends in the hundred acre woods...

I just bought 6 cans of Singha that I plan to bring back to Scandinavia planning to give them away but might even sell them for a PROFIT (not that THAT matters - even if I give them away I am "doing work").
I am probably in deep trouble now....
Cheers!
You sure are if you're buying Singha instead of Chang....

I wish I could remember who and where, but I do remember reading an article about some Thai minister that loves getting on the condom/safe sex eduaction band wagon. He was a bit nutty over it, I think he cops a lot of blame over it all but... he headed the last big education awareness program, and from what I have heard it went pretty well. But time let's people forget and slip back to conservative taboo.
It must have worked at some level though. I had one group of students presenting their debate; Sex education will encourage kids to try it. The great thing was 1 student (not quite clear on the point she was making) pulled out a condom and proceeded to show the class just what you do with it. It had everyone in stitches. I don't work in Bangkok but out in the proverbial sticks. A lot of the students believe that sex before marriage will make the woman valueless, yet at least they know the value of safe sex.
I am not sure, but I think you may be referring to the efforts of Meechai Viravaidya. I heard that he has now retired and is running a chain of restaurants called Cabbages and Condoms.

as in PASSPORK??...spelling mistakes or variations in print details...sells fake student cards on Khao San Road that sell for 250 baht (6.10 dollars). How many years do you need to carry a fake student card, until you can buy a fake degree?

The top Thai envoy in Singapore said the 'Thailand Team' was also considering another option--turning the Thai Embassy to Singapore to become a grand business building complex, but not so high as the first option.
On the other hand, they could just move the whole embassy to Orchard Towers....

Does this mean that subscription rates shall be reduced now?
UBC claimed in the past that their rates were higher than cable operators in neighbouring countries, because UBC was forced to pay more for broadcast rights by networks whose commercials were blocked in Thailand.

Bali is predominatly Hindu
You are right there - but it won't remain a Hindu island for long. All Indonesian govt policies formal and informal are designed to have more and more muslims resettling to Bali. Wait another 10 years and muslims shall have an overwhelming majority in Bali.
Population manipulation is just one of the strategies being implemented by radical muslims to stake claims to parts of Asian countries.
E. Timor was heading in the same direction before it's timely freedom struggle and independence.
At the time of partition, Kashmir was a Hindu majority state and its ruler opted to join the union of secular India. In just 50 odd years, it has become a majority muslim province with a carefully targetted terror campaign.

For my part I enjoyed watching the luggage go around the carusel.
All exactly the same piece of luggage (model or type and size), just different colors. Not sure of the odds of that happening, but I'd guess the moving luggage was staged for the cameras.
kenk3z
A friend arrived at Don Muang yesterday and couldn't find his bag. Is there any chance it could be going around on the belt at Suvarnabhumi?
Belt ... belt. There's no bloody belts there yet
Should find it at the world's biggest lost luggage counter then!
-
The Thai television channels just all had live coverage of the event, so I guess it's official: Suvarnabhumi Airport is now open!
I'm flying back into Bangkok on Saturday so I look forward to landing at the new airport
Won't be a problem, but customs may charge you import tax on your parachute.

Why oh why is this airport called 'Suvarnabhumi' in English. In the Thai pronounciation, the final 'i' is not sounded and there certainly is not a 'bh' in there either! My wife pronounced it in Thai as 'Suvarnapoom', which is how I would also pronounce it (having been told by her that the final มิ is not pronounced).
So we are going to have loads of western tourists telling taxi drivers to go to Suvarnabhumi, which will probably confuse the ###### out of them.
It's about time someone challenged the accuracy of the authorised transliteration system...
Suvarnabhumi is not a Thai word - it is a Sanskrit / Pali term for Golden Land. Several Sanskrit / Pali words and terms are used in the Thai language and when spoken end up sounding very different from their original tone/s. For the name of the new airport, the transliteration was done at a very high level. There shall be no change.

###### comes to mind - mind you humans are only species that practices mogonamy.
Humans are not the only species that practice monogamy.
squid mate for life
Hey Bronco where'd you get this one from? I was watching a tv prog. last week that in recent research of squid mating habits it showed the female's eggs were fertilised by up to 5 males within a 5 minute period. Sneaker squid would rush in to fertilise when the regular boyfriend wasn't looking. Sound familiar? She would then end up with 200 little squid, sometimes with 4 or 5 different fathers.
That explains the 8 arms!

...Suvarnabhumi Airport's eastern runway, 4.0 metres long...
Wow !--to land on the airport's western runway, 3.7 metres long...cool!... my driveway is longer than the airport runway...
Yeah, but can't land an A 340-600 on your driveway - so there!

Travellers can take Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima buses which leave every 10 minutes and take three hours.
Taking a flight to Korat takes nearly 3 hours as well considering the waiting procedure at both ends. I would rather take the flexible road option than fly a low cost airline with possiblity of infinite delays.

Nothing - just hot air...
