  1. Am I the only one finding the idea that airlines will not put a minor travelling alone (which I don't think they should) next to a (single) male offensive? Are we all now just deemed predators or what? How many males are actually dangerous for a child, it can't be more than 1 in 10.000 at most. Can you imagine the outcry if something similar had been said about a woman.

I tend to agree, that's why I said "man or woman". I'm not particularly concerned about a predator, the risk exists but it is very low, there is no need to be paranoid about it (the plane could also crash, right?). I'm more concerned that the kid would sit with someone not nice. We all had our share of annoying fellow passengers... the fat one, the one who snores on your shoulder, the one who speaks too much, the one who smells bad... It's already hard to manage this kind of situation sometimes when you are an adult, so for a kid on his own I imagine it would be a pretty bad experience. On the other hand, a kid on his own may not the best company either. Mine is rather well behaved, or I hope so, but kids are kids, they can be sick, they can get restless, etc. Bottom line is that we have to rely on the hostesses judgment so that everyone has a pleasant flight.

Why do you think a minor should not travel on his own?

  2. I live north of Cha-am so I have mine serviced and repaired in Tha Yang (first traffic light some 15-20 km north of Cha-am, on the way to Phetchaburi). If you go there turn left at the traffic lights and look for the shop on the left side of the road.

  3. Thanks for your replies. I'm just a bit worried because the little guy usually hates to be alone, whatever he does.

Do you know who the child sits next to, typically? I'm guessing they sit the kids together if there are several of them, but what if he is the only one? I wouldn't want him next to a random passenger, man or woman. I will phone Thai Airways to inquire about that, but other people's experience is always good to hear.

  4. I'm thinking of sending my 7 yo to his second homecountry for a one month holiday, flying as an unaccompanied minor on Thai Airways (so it is a direct flight and the hostess can speak Thai with him). He's been there several times before and he loves it, but it would be the first time he would go alone, as he usually travels with some friends of mine or his grand-parents.

Anyone ever sent a child as a UM on Thai Airways? I would love to hear about your experience, feedback, any issue, etc. Thanks a lot!

  5. ^ Call the Dept. of Immigration.

I'm sure they'll be fully up to speed with such matters and give you a clear and concise knowledgeable answer.... rolleyes.gif

Think it will be down to someone in the area taking a ride up there to talk to the officers at the border.

First part of your answer .. Just talked to prachuap office>>the only number ön immi site ,

They say its not open yet !! Clearly Not the place to get competent answer !!

That leaves us waiting for the second part ..

The answer was competent enough, unlike everything that was announced here, as the border checkpoint is not opened yet, even for Thai nationals. Source: a Thai friend of mine who was there today and got turned away.

  6. My "negativity" is that all of a sudden, you said my phrase implied the seller didn't know, and it becomes obvious that you don't know the meaning of it.

Yes indeed, my mistake, it's because I inderstood it as "คุณไม่ทราบว่า", like in English "would you know" whereas it is obviously "I don't know", or rather "I'm wondering". Right?

What about แค่อยากรู้ or อยากรู้อย่างเดีว ? Would it sound goofy as well? In other words is it the redundancy that makes it sound goofy?

  7. No it does not. You obviously do not understand the phrase ไม่ทราบว่า at all.

So, would you care to explain? Why the negative form if you don't imply a possible negative answer?

แค่อยากรู้อย่างเดียว will sound very goofy and no Thai would have said it.

Well, just Google it and you will be surprised.

  8. Mole, it implies that the woman may not know the price. A bit weird if she is the owner...

For "out of interest" I would say แค่อยากรู้อย่างเดีว (I just want to know only).

  9. So you're not interested in places to pick women up... means no gogo, no girlie bars, no disco... but then you want to see a ping pong show, I don't get it. Ping pong shows are the most boring and least sexy shows ever, it's like going to the circus and see a bored and drugged tiger performing stupid tricks. You should rather go to one of those places where you can pick women up (yeah I know you're not into "that") but at least you can listen to music, dance, drink, meet some friendly people, chat, play pool or whatever. Much better fun, believe me.

  10. English is not my mother tongue and I used the wrong term, I thought insecure meant "not safe" but seeing your reactions I checked and found out the meaning. So I didn't mean insecure in their head, I was talking about people who don't feel safe and have guard dogs to protect themselves or their house. I was also thinking of people where I am from who walk around with pitbulls, rottweilers or dobermans just to look tough and scary. Anyway, sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't change the fact that some dogs are intimidating and when you don't know anything about the owner it's not preposterous to see the dog as a potential danger.

  11. I know it doesn't help answer your question but i sympathise with you sincerely as i had exactly the same problem in Phuket whenever i walked my Doberman on the beach or around the village, territorial soi dogs and uneducated people who just jump to conclusions.....the people NOT the dogs!! lol

You can call me uneducated but too many people have big dogs because they feel insecure and they need some kind of protection, so yes if I see someone with a doberman or a "60 kg intimidating beast" (OP's words), and I don't know anything about that person's background and the way he has raised his dog, my reaction is to beware, especially with my kids around.

  12. I'll give it a quick try, hopefully it will be easier for someone else to fill in the blanks and correct mistakes.
